Adonai ro’i, lo echsar.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
Bin’ot deshe yarbitseini,
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures,
Al mei m’nuchot y’nahaleini,
He leadeth me beside the still waters,
Naf’shi y’shovev,
He restoreth my soul,
Yan’cheini v’ma’aglei tsedek,
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness,
L’ma’an sh’mo.
For His name’s sake.
Gam ki eilech
Yea, though I walk
B’gei tsalmavet,
Through the valley of the shadow of death,
Lo ira ra,
I will fear no evil,
Ki Atah imadi.
For Thou art with me.
Shiv’t’cha umishan’techa
Thy rod and Thy staff
Hemah y’nachamuni.
They comfort me.
Ave Maria Ave Maria gratia plena Dominus tecum.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you,
Benedicta tu in mulieribus
Blessed are you among women
Et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus
And blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Sancta Maria, mater Dei,
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Ora pro nobis peccatoribus
Pray for us sinners,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.
Now, and at the hour of our death.
Sancta Maria, ora pro nobis. Amen.
Holy Mary, pray for us. Amen.
Abendlied Bleib’ bei uns, denn es will Abend werden,
Bide with us, for evening shadows darken,
Und der Tag hat sich geneiget.
And the day will soon be over.

Kuskil peab alguskokkukõla olema,
Somewhere the original harmony must exist,
kuskil suures looduses, varjul.
hidden somewhere in the vast wilds.
On tema vägevas laotuses,
In Earth’s mighty firmament,
täheringide kauguses,
in the far reaches of swirling galaxies,
on tema päikese sära sees,
in sunshine,
lillekeses, metsakohinas,
in a little flower, in the song of a forest,
emakõne südamemuusikas
in the music of a mother’s voice,
või silmavees –
or in teardrops –
kuskil peab surematus olema,
somewhere, immortality endures,
kuskil alguskokkukõla leitama:
and the original harmony will be found.
kust oleks muidu inimese rinda
How else could it have formed
saanud ta –
in human hearts –
Muusika? music?
Tu sa ngre en la mia
( Pa blo Ne ru da, 190 4-1973)
Aquí está el pan, el vino, la mesa, la morada:
Here are the bread and the wine, the table and the house:
el menester del hombre, la mujer y la vida:
a of a man, of a woman, of life.
a este sitio corría la paz vertiginosa,
To this place, peace rushed in, spinning round and round.:
por esta luz ardió la común quemadura.
To make this light, a shared fire burned.
Honor a tus dos manos que vuelan preparando
Hail to your two hands that fly baking
los blancos resultados del canto y la cocina,
the white creations of kitchen and song.
salve! la integridad de tus pies corredores,
Hail! the virtue of your busy feet;
viva! la bailarina que baila con la escoba.
Long live the ballerina who dances with her broom!
Aquellos bruscos ríos con aguas y amenazas,
Those rough rivers of water, with their currents and threats,
aquel atormentado pabellón de la espuma,
Those tormented pavilions of foam,
aquellos incendarios panales y arrecifes
those hives and reefs aflame:
son hoy este reposo de tu sangre en la mía,
oday they are this respite of your blood in mine,
este cauce estrellado y azul como la noche,
this path, star-strewn and blue as the night,
esta simplicidad sin fin de la ternura
this endless simplicity of tenderness
(Tran slation by S . Kirchne r )
S h e Wa lks in Beauty
( L ord B yron , 1788-1824)
A B o y a n d a Gi r l
(O ct av io P az , 19 14- 19 9 8 )
She walks in beauty, like the night
Stretched out on the grass
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
a boy and a girl
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Savoring their oranges
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
giving their kisses like waves exchanging foam
Thus mellowed to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies
Stretched out on the beach a boy and a girl
One shade the more, one ray the less
Savoring their limes
Had half impaired the nameless grace
giving their kisses like clouds exchanging foam
Which waves in every raven tress Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Stretched out underground
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
a boy and a girl
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place
Saying nothing, never kissing giving silence for silence
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow
(En glish Tra ns lat io n b y M u r ie l R u ke ys e r, 19 13 - 19 8 0 )
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent The smiles that win, the tints that glow But tell of days in goodness spent A mind at peace with all below A heart whose love is innocent!
A b sch i eds lied Ich fahr dahin, wenn es muß sein,
I’m going away, if that’s how it must be,
Ich scheid mich von der Liebsten mein,
I’m leaving my beloved,
Zuletzt laß ich ihrs Herze mein,
But in the end, I left her my heart,
Dieweil ich leb, so soll es sein.
As I live, so shall it be.
Ich fahr dahin, ich fahr dahin!
I’m going away, I’m going away!
Ich bitt dich, liebste Fraue mein,
I beg you, my dear lady,
Wann ich dich mein und anders kein,
If I love you and no other,
Wann ich dir gib mein Lieb allein,
If I give my love to you alone,
Gedenk, daß ich dein eigen bin.
Remember that I’m yours.
Ich fahr dahin, ich fahr dahin!
I’m going away, I’m going away!
Nun halt die Treu als stet als ich!
So be faithful to me, as I am constant [to you]!
So wie du willt, so findst du mich.
As you wish, so you will find me [to be].
Halt dich in Hut, das bitt ich dich!
Remain safe at home, this I pray you!
Gesegn dich Gott! Ich fahr dahin!
God bless you! I’m going away
Ich fahr dahin, ich fahr dahin!
I’m going away, I’m going away!
T ha t W hich Remains What we have once enjoyed we could never lose. A sunset, a mountain bathed in moonlight, the ocean and calm and in storm – we see these, love their beauty, hold the vision to our hearts. All the we love deeply becomes a part of us. Our beloved ones are no more lost to us when they die then if they were still laughing and loving and working and playing at our side. Truly, life is overlord of Death and Love could never lose its own. (Fro m T h e Op en D o o r b y H el en Ke lle r)
