OPENING WEEKEND Dvorak’s New World Symphony

Dvorak’s New World Symphony will take you on a grand journey through lush and powerful melodies inspired by African and Native American roots and spirituals. Inbal Segev joins your Bozeman Symphony to perform Anna Clyne’s cello concerto, DANCE. DANCE was celebrated among NPR Music’s “Favorite Songs of 2020,” and has more than five million listens on Spotify. The melodies of this program will sweep you away for what will be a rousing start to our season.

Witness Music Director Norman Huynh’s unique interpretation of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat major “Eroica.” Conveying both turmoil and triumph, this piece is known as a crucial turning point for both Beethoven and symphonic music as a whole, as it marks the beginning of the Romantic Period. Prize-winning pianist Rodolfo Leone returns to Bozeman to perform Ravel’s “lighthearted and brilliant” Piano Concerto in G major.

Sandy Stimson, our beloved principal oboe will take center stage to perform Westlake’s Spirit of the Wild. This rarely performed work utilizes the oboe to depict the diverse majesty of Australia’s wilderness. Rounding out the program is a classic masterpiece, Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Our talented Assistant Conductor, Ryan Tani, will guide the audience on an extraordinary musical journey that will introduce a colorful cast of musical characters.

Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid depicts the Wild West and American music in its truest form! This orchestral suite weaves together the ballet’s most popular tunes, incorporating both folk song and jazz to portray the life of a notorious bandit. Latvian violinist, Kristine Balanas, performs Tchaikovsky’s flashy Violin Concerto. Guest Conductor Caleb Young, known as one of today’s most exciting emerging American artists will be taking the podium.

BRAHMS: Symphony No. 1
Music Director Norman Huynh offers his interpretation of Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1. With its premiere in 1876, this symphony respected the traditions of classical giants while ushering in new possibilities for symphonic music. Then, be the first to witness the final Bozeman Symphony commission for our Composer-in-Residence, Scott Lee. Through The Last Best Place and The Fire Beneath, Scott has developed a charming rapport with our musicians and audience. This final commission will be a full-scale symphonic work that will push the limits of his compositional voice and further establish him as one of North America’s exciting young composers.

“O Fortuna,” the opening movement of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, is perhaps best known for its use in popular culture as a dramatic and intense soundtrack for movies, TV shows, commercials, and sporting events. Music Director Norman Huynh and the Bozeman Symphonic Choir will showcase the full range of this breathtaking work. From the explosive opening to the intimate and haunting “In Trutina,” every note will resonate with intensity and emotion. This is a bucket-list piece of music to hear live for anyone with ears.
