The Editors’ Say… Ne Te Illegitimum Carborundum! As you probably noticed, the PARANORMAL WATCH has a growing internet fan base, and is rapidly evolving into a serious paranormal magazine (as opposed to a 6 page newsletter, which is what it was in its first incarnation) and is receiving hits from all over the world from people interested in reading about paranormal stories and issues, as well as BPA member clubs and groups for updates on Tam Kinnear-Swift, Editor of how the BPA is doing. the Paranormal Watch The PARANORMAL WATCH as you may have noticed, is slowly Welcome to the September edistepping aside from how the BPA tion of the PARANORMAL is doing, what we are doing and WATCH. how were progressing, as the new Firstly, apologies for missing the website is up and running (which last few editions of The Magayou can view at www.ukbpa.org) and has all the zine, but it was left in very capadetails about this, so it is our inble hands in the form of Brian tention to make it a paranormal Lambert, and our Guest editor, only magazine as of the beginning Steve Gill, to whom I extend my sincerest thanks for the great job of next year. they did while I was away. Ghost Sightings Cause Traffic Jams In N. Ireland The numerous ghoulish encounters with a mysterious 'white lady' has prompted many to believe they had met a supernatural being. Over the past six weeks there have been dozens of sightings of the apparition near the ruins of a remote farmhouse in near Coalisland in Co Tyrone.
Rya Bell, the son of the local landlord Raymond, claims he has seen the ghost more than 20 times. 'I was freaked out the first time I saw her, but now I'm getting used to it,' he said. 'It looks like an old small woman with a shining white cape.

But when drivers swerved to avoid her, she disappeared. These sightings were about a mile away from the latest sightings.' Mr Coates, who set up his paranormal organisation in 1991, believes the ghost might be a woman who has died in a car crash in the area.
Convinced that the sightings are true - rather than the result of one too many pints of Guinness - convoys of ghost hunters have flocked to the dip in the road where she was seen. Up to 60 cars have been spotted parked on the side of the road at midnight, causing traffic jams in the usually desolate area.
Others, however, are more sceptical and believe the apparition is a hoax.
The Lane in Coalisland Where The Mysterious White Lady Has Been seen
Villagers who have spotted the ghost say it looks like an old woman with a sad expression. However, none have so far been able to describe the features of her face in any detail. The spot where the ghost was spotted could perhaps best be described as a 'ghost's paradise'. The damp crumbling walls on the ruined house where the ghost was spotted still bear the scorch marks from a fire.
Desmond Donnelly, a Sinn FĂŠin councillor, said: 'At one point, there was a line of up to 60 cars on the road with people trying to spot it.

The investigation proper started at around 0045 GMT with all everyone starting upstairs in one group. The first room investigated was the upstairs toilet, a temperature drop was noted upon getting onto the staircase, no more than 2 or 3 degrees, but enough to be noticeable, even through a thick jumper. although the toilet has had various reports of disturbances, it was difficult to ascertain whether anything was happening due to the size of the room, the size being approximately, 5 ft x 3 ft.
Moving upward onto the top floor, we moved into the kitchen, where we tried some calling out and took photos. the EMF readings were peculiar, but not entirely unexplainable due to the fact it was a kitchen and is heavily wired in certain places. From there, we moved to bedroom 3, the very back room, where earlier i had set up a trigger object, and had set the laptop with the webcam running to record any movement,
should it happen. The first trigger object set up was a lighter without a flint (due to the fire link) to see if any reaction could be caused by it. 45 minutes after setting the experiment up, we checked for any movement, and the lighter had moved fractionally, but enough to be spotted straight away. we left the camera running, and set the experiment up using the lighter again, using a different sheet of paper, and setting it at a different angle. when we checked back on room 3, in the second half of the investigation, (as will be described later) for the second experiment, we found it hadn't moved at all.
From room 3, we moved directly downstairs, to the cellar, where most of the happenings had been reported. Moving down the stairs, immediately, an odd smell was noticeable, as well as a noticeable drop in temperature, but as we were headed toward the cooler room, it was almost certainly due to that as further areas in the cellar AFTER that, were uncommonly warm.

Featured Investigation — Gothic Ghost Hunters At Unnamed Pub, Bradford Cont. Continued From Over Becky noted a sounds like a stone being thrown, and asked quietly if anyone was there to do it again, and as soon as she moved away from the door, heard two taps on the door. She noted the atmosphere, was comfortable and not oppressive in any way. We took some photos, as well as a video and called out, to see if anyone present wished to make themselves known. one member of the group reported feeling as if the atmosphere was playful, almost taunting as if, to quote her words, "as if he was saying, i know you know I'm here, but its up to YOU to prove it" moving through the cooler room, into the corridor, a notable temperature rise was evident, we took some photos of the stairs, directly below the bar area, where a lot of activity has been reported, and a quick EMF sweep discovered an unusual reading of about 5-7 mG on the original stone steps (which were put in and have been in situ without disturbance since being originally built) thus eliminating the possibility of electrical wires beneath giving the reading. nothing was recorded on camera, unfortunately, and no feelings were indicated by any of the team who were investigating. Moving into the boiler room, the room where the
box is usually kept, we noticed another temperature rise, but again, due to the boiler being located in there, it again was almost certainly due to this fact. We again, called out, and took some more photos, this time catching a few light anomalies, around the area of the box. conditions were difficult due to the cellar being illuminated by neon lights, which made photography difficult on my camera, however results on Emily's camera were notably different. after taking a break, we split into two teams to investigate separately, Sam and Becky, going off to the cellar with the video camera, and Myself, Emily, Olly and Kate, investigating the bar area, male and female toilets, and downstairs area, before moving to the third floor and back into bedroom 3. Whilst in the cellar, Becky initially didn't feel anything from the immediate barrel area, corridor and 'coal room'. However, she was still feeling a playful, inviting feeling from the other 'area' which her and Sam proceeded into. One room being a freezer area the other the barrel receiving room. The barrel receiving room felt empty and uneventful. The freezer area felt playful and they sat there and spoke out several times in a playful manner. Upon asking if anyone was there who wanted to 'play' a noise immediately
likening a small piece of gravel or something similar was thrown. However this could have been coincidence. Upon leaving this area after asking to make a louder noise etc Sam proceeded immediately up through the barrel room and up the stairs whilst Becky closed the door to this room. Immediately there were two bangs identical to the ones experienced previously. This is why initially Becky wanted to go alone as I had the feeling this was aimed at my interest only etc. Hence She decided to take another look on her own on Thursdays daytime investigation. (see investigation day 2 report) Upstairs, on the first floor, We were getting a lot of light anomalies, in the fireplace area of the rear lounge, and in the front quarter of the bar area. None of these were noticed at the time, but upon reviewing the evidence in close detail the next day, a few light anomalies were noticed, and almost all came from the same two areas, which were between the fireplace and the shutter to the restaurant (immediately opposite the bar area, where all a lot of activity has been reported) and in the front, bar side of the pub (where the lady has been seen crossing, and sitting in the chair)
“One member of the group reported feeling as if the atmosphere was playful, almost taunting as if, to quote her words, "as if he was saying, i know you know I'm here, but its up to YOU to prove it”

“i returned to the male toilets to investigate, (nobody else was willing to at this point) and immediately on entering the toilets, got Goosebumps (something i might add is very uncommon for me on investigation, being a sceptic, as i tend to only believe what my instruments are saying) ”
Continued From Over Of course, it is not possible at this stage without further examination to conclude that all if any are paranormal, but there are at least 6 or 7 photos, that in my experience, i believe to be light anomalies as opposed to dust (which i believe to account for about 3 of the other photos due to the large amount of light anomalies captured in said 3 photos at once) After investigating the bar area, we then moved to the toilets, investigating the male toilets first, starting with a cold spot i had noticed earlier in the night, whilst doing the baseline checks throughout the building. Emily and Kate seemed a little on edge in the male toilets, but we investigated the cold spot and took a few photos, not really coming to any
The Female toilets, were about 6-8 degrees warmer than the men's, and Emily and Kate, were the first to depart, after only a few moments, having felt an air of intimidation, Olly also picked up on this, a few seconds later and was also quickly out of the door. I remained and took a few photos, wondering whether it was a good thing or a bad that i had missed this feeling, but soon also quickly departed, just in case i was missing something, as i tend not to pick up on vibrations and feelings in a room/building at all. As we left, after spending a total of about no more than 2 minutes in the female toilets, we noticed the male toilets flush themselves again. Emily and Olly, being 2 of the staff of the pub, noted that, it is not usual for the urinals to flush themselves that close together, and usually there is a gap of about 510 minutes between flushes, this struck me as odd, so i returned to the male toilets to investigate, (nobody else was willing to at this point) and immediately on entering the toilets, got Goosebumps (something
i might add is very uncommon for me on investigation, being a sceptic, as i tend to only believe what my instruments are saying) took a few photos, which didn't really turn up anything specific or noteworthy. On leaving the toilets, we then proceeded back to bedroom 3, to check on the second trigger object experiment we had set up, after the first had moved slightly (see earlier account) and after discovering that it had not moved, proceeded to investigate the immediate area, and started calling out again. The EMF meter was going off in different places, which was slightly different to earlier, but was slightly biased towards the back of the room, nearest the window. For some unexplained reason, the window pane, started giving of an EMF signal of about 6 mG for a period of about 10-15 seconds, as i moved the Gauss meter, around to see if there was an electric wire in any of the adjacent walls, the signal dropped off and as i replaced the Gauss meter on the same spot on the window as before, the signal dropped back to the baseline reading of about 2.5 mG Continued Over

Featured Investigation — Gothic Ghost Hunters At Unnamed Pub, Bradford Cont. Continued From Over as recorded earlier in the night on the preliminary checks. It was at this time Emily started calling out and talking specifically to the little girl that is believed to have caught her nightdress alight and burned to death in that room, and she asked "did your nighty catch fire as you brushed your hair" at which point i decided it might be a good idea to set up a trigger object using a hairbrush. This we did, using the same method as earlier, i.e. setting the hairbrush on a sheet of plain A4 paper and drawing around it, leaving the camera running and locking off the room. We then proceeded downstairs, to wrap up the investigation, and discuss what we had each felt and thought had happened throughout the evening for about 20 minutes. Returning to the room later, we found the hairbrush had in fact moved, as the lighter had in the earlier trigger object experiment. Unfortunately, we didn't actually catch either of the movements on camera, as i had unfortunately left the camera on pause, rather than start the camera "rolling" and therefore missed all the movement described above. Investigation Day 2 We started looking through the photos from the evening
investigation, and found on closer inspection, that a few of the photos, had light anomalies in, ranging from single light anomalies, to 7+ in one photo. Its of my opinion that the photos with more than 2 or 3 light anomalies in, are most likely caused by dust particles reflecting the flash from the digital cameras we were using, but as is always the case with light anomalies, it is very hard to prove anything conclusively, without further investigation of said photos. Whilst i was looking through the photos, Becky was looking through the videos we had captured on the laptop, and after comparing the video with some of the earlier photos taken of the chair in which the lady is reported to sit, it is clear that at some point, the curtain behind the chair, was moved, and swept backwards onto the windowsill. The video showed only the curtain after it had been swept back, but the earlier photos (taken for reference as to how the chair was left, as it was a leather chair and anyone sitting in it would have left a mark in the leather) clearly showed the curtain hanging normally, as Emily had told us she had left it when she closed the curtains, about 30 mins prior to the photo being taken. After Becky and Sam's experience in the cellar the
night before, when we separated to investigate separately, she was feeling positive and happy enough (she described the feeling as "playful” the night before) to go down there on her own with a camera, and a digital camera, and do some calling out.
As she was walking down the stairs into the cellar though, it became clear to her that the feeling was very much different, and the playfulness of the night before, had been replaced with a malevolent, oppressive feeling. upon walking through the door, she immediately felt uneasy, and had a flash through her mind of this person overbearing a woman, and instant feeling of the dread this woman must have felt. She wanted to leave, but much to her own credit, decided to stay and try to investigate further, and position the camera on the dishwasher so it could capture almost all of the cooler room.
“As she was walking down the stairs into the cellar though, it became clear to her that the feeling was very much different, and the playfulness of the night before, had been replaced with a malevolent, oppressive feeling. ”
Her almost immediate feeling was that it was a mans presence in the cellar, although not aware at that time that the staff of the pub had also picked up that it was a mans presence in the cellar, described him as "a nasty, evil man, who didn't like women. Continued Over

“After relating the story to me, and a few other members of staff who were working (Emily and Kate) who also confirmed they had had the same type of feelings in their arms whilst they had been down there”
After calming herself, and steadying herself a bit, she called out, confronting whatever it was that was down there, noting also that she had a "pins and needles" type tingling in both her arms and also the air seemed thicker than it had been the previous evening.
Moving over to barrel room door, she asked if this was where
Almost as soon as she had walked through the door, the camera started playing up and went blank, after turning it off and back on again, she had an awful feeling that something was going to happen pretty shortly, and deciding it probably wasn’t likely to be a good thing, decided it was time to leave. I noticed, she was slightly shaken and also bemused, as she had been expecting a playful presence as opposed to the nasty one she encountered. After relating the story to me, and a few other members of staff who were working (Emily and Kate) who also confirmed they had had the same type of feelings in their arms whilst they had been down there, i decided to do a trigger object experiment using the brushes from the box in the boiler room, in hope it would provoke
some sort of reaction, as the previous time the box was moved, the incidents increased until it was replaced back to its original position. This was something Emily wasn't too keen on at first, but could see the value of the experiment in trying to pin it down as a link to the spirit. The experiment, took the same form as before, an A4 piece of paper, with two brushes, one a regular sized shoe brush, and the other a small toothbrush sized brush, both drawn around in pencil, one set straight, the other at an angle of about 45 degrees. The camera, was set approximately a foot from the piece of paper, on the ledge directly to the side of the door to the corridor (where the blocked up window was found at an earlier date by the bar staff) and i left it running, whilst i went upstairs to finish off looking through the rest of the previous nights photos. About an hour later i went to check, and noting that the air temperature was about the same as it was when i left, and that also neither of the brushes had moved, decided to go back up and leave it a bit longer. Britain's Most Famous Hauntings — Terror At Berkeley Square “The house in Berkeley Square contains at least one room in which the atmosphere is supernaturally charged, fatal to mind and body. 50 Berkeley Square, The Scene Of One Of Britain’s Most Famous Hauntings
50 Berkeley Square was the most famous of London's hauntings in Victorian times. Often families would take a detour to look at the house, during “The Victorians tours of the Love of the houses of hemacabre and all roes such as things William Pitt, supernatural Earl Grey and lead to an Clive of India. increase in At the time, stories around Prime Minister, this time, but George Canning were they real lived two doors or were they away from merely a No.50 until his figment of the death in 1927. Victorian inquisitive mind? ” The Victorians Love of the macabre and all things supernatural lead to an increase in stories around this time, but were they real or were they merely a figment of the Victorian inquisitive mind?
A gentleman, a disbeliever in ghosts, dared to sleep in it, and was found a corpse in the middle of the floor, after frantically ringing for help in vain. Rumour suggests other cases of the same kind, all ending in death" Mayfair Magazine, 10 May 1879. In 1840, there were reports of "supernatural" noises coming from the house, which was often empty and deserted for long periods. Jessie Middleton in her Grey Ghost Book wrote that a little Scots girl in a kilt haunted the house. The child was supposed to have been tortured to death in the top-most room of the house. Another of Jessie's stories suggests a girl called Adeline jumped from the top floor window to escape from her lecherous Uncle and since has haunted that room. Charles G Harper, also investigated No 50 in his book "Haunted Houses":
"There is quite a literature accumulated around No.50 and even in the staid pages of Notes and Queries the questions of "haunted or not haunted?" and if so, "By what or whom?" have been debated. It seems something or other, very terrible indeed haunts or did haunt a particular room. Whatever it is, has been sufficiently awful to have caused death, in convulsions, of at least two fool hardy persons who have dared to sleep in that chamber. The story is told of one who was not to be deterred by the fate of an earlier victim. He was sceptical and practical as well. Before retiring to bed he gave some parting instructions to those who occupied the rest of the house. "If I ring once," said he, "take no notice, for I might be only nervous, without due course; but if I ring twice come to me." They bade him good night. When the clock struck twelve they heard a faint ring, followed by a tremendous shout. On opening the door they found the unfortunate man in a fit. He died without ever being able to reveal what it was. Continued Over

Britain's Most Famous Hauntings — Terror At Berkeley Square — Cont. one of a handprint on a large photographic AHere’s shuddery pendant to this plate, the subject placing in their palm, an ‘Om’ story is that which tells symbol which directly relates to the vibrational how, of sound. a dance influence being given next door, a lady leaned against the wall dividing the Haunted House from its neighbour, and distinctly felt an inexplicably dreadful shock."
The Mayfair magazine wrote about the house many times, in its May 1879 issue it published "The very party walls of the house, when touched are found saturated with electric horror. It is uninhabited save by an elderly man and woman who act as caretakers, but even they have no access to that room. This is kept locked, the key being in the hands of a mysterious and seemingly nameless person who comes to the house every six months, locks up the elderly couple in the basement, and then unlocks the room, and occupies himself in it for hours." Elliot O' Donnell further intrigued the nation in his book "Phantoms of the Night", writing in a hand that wouldn't seem out of place in a Barbara Cartland novel, Elliot describes an incident that happened at Berkeley Square. Two sailors were scared out of their wits when a "shapeless and horrible something" appeared. One of the sailors leapt to his death; the other arrested for his murder, claiming that a ghost had pushed his friend out of the window.
Jack Hallam offers a more sober account of Berkeley Square in his book "Ghosts of London" and offers a likely cause to the sightings in the form of a recluse called Mr Myers. The first reports of the ghost happened about 1840 when Miss Curzon, who died in 1859 aged 90, owned the house. Miss Curzon must have contacted Jessie Middleton, who then wrote about the "girl in the kilt". It wasn't until after Curzon's death that 50 Berkeley Square achieved notoriety when the building was leased to a Mr Myers, whose eccentric conduct caused him to be referred as "an odd cross between Scrooge of Christmas Carol and Miss Havisham of Great Expectations" In 1873, the local council sued Myers for not paying taxed or rates. He didn't appear in court, but the judge summed up "the house in question is known as a 'haunted house' and has occasioned a good deal of speculation amongst the neighbours." A writer in 1880 said that Myers had leased the house for his impending marriage and began to furnish the house, when his wife-tobe left him. "This disappointment is said to have broken his heart and turned his brain. He became morose and solitary, and would never allow a
woman to come near him" said the writer. Myers, to escape society lived in the famous top room of the house and would often walk around the house at night to see what should have been the scene of his happiness bathed in candlelight. His midnight wanderings could have laid the foundations for ghost story. Hallam also writes that in 1907, ghost author Charles Harper revealed "The secret of the house, according to Mr Stuart Wortley, was that it belonged to Mr Du Pre, of Wilton Park, who shut his lunatic brother in one of attics. The captive was so violent he could only be fed through a hole. His groans and cries could be distinctly heard in the neighbouring houses." So could it be the nocturnal wanders of a jilted recluse or the insane cries of violent lunatic spurned the stories of a lurking murderous ghost? Or may be the house was damned, haunted by angry ghosts, hell bent on revenge on the living. Today, world famous antique booksellers, the Maggs Brothers, occupy the property. Over a hundred years after the first incidents, the tourists still ask if the house is haunted but after 30 years of occupation, the business has seen no evidence of a ghost. Tam Kinnear-Swift

Rendlesham Forest — The UK’s Roswell Rendlesham forest is well known for the UFO sightings of the 1980’s and is thought to be the UK’s Roswell. I will try to condense the information, but first I will discuss the twin airbases of Woodbridge and Bentwaters and the experiments done at Orfordness, as Military history of the area is interesting

Rendlesham Forest — The UK’s Roswell Cont. Continued From Over There was no knowledge of aircraft and suggested what was seen was probably the re-entry of the Russian Cosmos 749 Rocket which was seen south the day before. The next day, broken branches and burn marks were found at the landing site along with 3 triangular impressions in the ground, the police were re-called at 10.30am and reported that the imprints could have been made by animals. During the early hours of 28th December 1980 the service men returned to the area with Lt Col. Charles I Halt to check for radiation, but the radiation readings are heavily disputed. Halt recorded the events (copies of the tape and transcript are on the net) at the Eastern edge of the forest. Flashing lights were seen on the east side near the farm house, star like lights seen in the north and the south, The ones from the North looked half moon shaped, dancing around with coloured lights and then turned into a full circle. The brightest looked like it was beaming a stream of light and this was seem in the security area of the base, the sighting took place from 2.44am and at 4.00am the object was still over Woodbridge base. Holt heard farm animals making a noise and the sound of a woman screaming, but it is disputed that the farm had animals at that time.
Charles L Holt’s memo was available in the states in 1983 dated 13th January 1981. The MOD maintained the only document on file was Halt’s memo but it was later confirmed that a covering letter from the RAF commander of Woodbridge had been sent with Halt’s memo. The MOD insists there was no defence significance/ threat in the alleged sightings and suggested they never investigated the sightings even thou it is thought they did investigate 2 weeks after the sightings. There were reports of strange people interviewing the witnesses and in some cases threatening and some witnesses were moved to other bases. The common explanation for the sightings of 1980 is the lighthouse at Orfordness but I have personally been to Rendlesham several times and would dispute the lighthouse theory as the lighthouse can not be seen through the tree at the East gate and if you stand at the farmers field you can only just see the light house and the light of the lighthouse is one colour and all different colour lights were seen in December of 1980.
During the 1980 UFO incident a witness saw a upturned mushroom shape with a greenish-white glow, heading towards the twin bases, his dog became ill and later died. Two different witnesses described electrical interference and high military activity. The Forestry Commission confirmed that some tops of trees were damaged and had to be felled and the wildlife had been disThe Letter To Central TV From Nick turbed. Strange Images Caught On CCTV In York “I put the cameras on in the office upstairs to have a look,” she said. “I saw what I thought was a man going up the stairs.”
The Light horseman, York, As it Stands Today Ghostly goings-on caught on CCTV at a York pub have stumped the city’s paranormal experts – and now television viewers in Japan will have a chance to look at the footage. Last September, The Press reported how landlady Janine Robinson had spotted a series of mysterious orbs moving through the hallway of the Light horseman, in Fulford Road, while watching the monitor of the pub and hotel’s digital surveillance system. The footage, shown exclusively on The Press website, attracted tens of thousands of viewers, among them executives at Japanese television channel TV Asahi. Producer Niki Matsukawa said a researcher had spotted the footage on our website while looking for material for a show called The Fountain Of Aura. “It’s a kind of paranormal show, looking at ghosts, psy-
chics and other mysterious phenomena,” she said. Ms Matsukawa said she did not think the show – which will air early next month – would necessarily come to any firm conclusions about the orbs. Janine said a film crew had been at the pub earlier this month. “We negotiated with them coming up, and then a cameraman and a Japanese lady came and did the filming,” she said. “They said it was quite a serious show they’re making, not a joke show, it’s some kind of documentary.” Strange sounds coming from the downstairs hallway early one Saturday morning last summer alerted the publican to the goings-on.
But since then neither she nor her husband, Steve, have seen any more of the ghostly shapes. “We’ve been so busy though, we can’t just sit and look at the CCTV,” she said. “I’ve had the odd look now and again, but I’ve not seen any“I put the thing.” cameras on in Surveillance expert Anthony Dickens, who installed the cameras, was unable to explain the apparitions at the time.

The Enfield Poltergeist They were even more afraid when they realised that the piece of oak furniture was about to block their bedroom door - their only means of escape.
One Of The Most Famous Paranormal Photos In The World Came in The Late 70’s During The Enfield Poltergeist Case
Nothing on that balmy August evening seemed even slightly out of the ordinary. Peggy Hodgson was busily tidying up her terrace house in Enfield, North London, after her four boisterous children had once again left it looking like a pigsty. Mrs Hodgson’s daughters were upstairs getting ready for bed. As usual, 11-year old Janet was play fighting with her elder sister, Margaret. Then, as the pair rolled around and giggled on the bed, something most peculiar happened: a chest of drawers began sliding slowly across the floor towards them. The two sisters watched aghast as the chest shuffled across the room as if dragged by a pair of powerful but invisible hands.
Luckily for the children, their mother burst into the room to complain about the noise.
She grabbed the chest and shoved it back against the wall. But the invisible force continued. Peggy watched in terror as the chest once again began sliding across the room. This time, the piece of furniture moved far quicker and Peggy could do nothing to stop it. She tried again to shove the chest back against the wall but failed. And this time she could feel an inhumanly strong force in the room. Objects would miraculously appear and disappear before the eyes of terrified onlookers. Confused and terrified at what she was witnessing, Peggy gathered up her children and fled the bedroom in panic. And thus began one of the strangest cases of alleged haunting ever recorded in Britain.
Over the following months the so-called “Enfield Poltergeist” turned the lives of the Hodgson family upside down. Toys, plates, cutlery, books and pictures would all inexplicably fly across the room. Such encounters may sound utterly absurd. But what makes the Enfield case so remarkable is that the events were exhaustively investigated by respected academic researchers and more pertinently were witnessed by more than 30 independent witnesses, including police officers.
“It was later to take an even more terrifying turn, when a cast iron fireplace would be torn from the wall, fires would ignite and extinguish themselves spontaneously, and Janet would be thrown out of bed, and made to levitate. One of these incidents were witnessed Although the haunt- by two passers by, who stopped ing happened 30 in amazement to years ago, Janet and watch” Margaret have not spoken publicly about it since childhood. They are still wary about discussing the incident in depth, as their lives have moved on. But in a documentary to be shown tomorrow they will break their silence for the first time - and what they reveal sheds new light on one of the most remarkable paranormal incidents ever to take place in Britain. “I felt used by a force that nobody understands,” says Janet. “I really don’t like to think about it too much.” Continued Over

The Enfield Poltergeist Cont. Continued From Over I’m not sure the poltergeist was truly ‘evil’. It was almost as if it wanted to be part of our family. It didn’t want to hurt us. It had died there and wanted to be at rest. The only way it could communicate was through me and my sister.” Hard-bitten sceptics, of course, scoff at such suggestions and claim that poltergeist stories are simply the result of hoaxing and trickery. They point out that pre-teen girls are hardly reliable witnesses - and, crucially, Janet and her sister have admitted to playing tricks on some of those who were sent to investigate their haunting. This has made it easy for rationalists to dismiss the whole tale as hokum. And yet a close examination of the story reveals the truth is rather more complex, intriguing and perplexing. Above all, those who witnessed the events at Enfield were left in no doubt that they were involved in a genuine case of haunting, and while their testimony may seem far-fetched, it is equally improbable to suggest that so many adult witnesses could have been hoaxed. Key among the independent witnesses were the police officers, who were called to the Hodgsons’ home, soon after the poltergeist first
made its presence felt in August 1977. They took statements and noted the family’s sincere terror, but in the absence of any hard evidence were sceptical about what might have taken place. It was only as the officers were preparing to leave that they were forced to take the case more seriously: quite suddenly, a sitting room chair levitated off the carpet before their eyes and started moving slowly across the room.
A Strange And Certainly Sobering Photograph Documenting Some Of The Activity From The Case
“It came off the floor nearly half an inch,” recalls WPC Carolyn Heeps, one of the Metropolitan Police officers sent to investigate the haunting. “I saw it slide off to the right about four feet before it came to rest. I checked to see if it could have slid along the floor by itself. “I even placed a marble on the floor to see whether it would roll in the same direction as the chair. It didn’t. “I checked for wires under the cushions and chairs and I could not see any. I couldn’t find any explanation at all.” But, of course, no actual crime had been committed, so the police were unable to assist further. Desperate for an explanation about what could be taking place in their home, the family turned to the Society for Psychical Research,
a respected scientific body that examines cases of alleged haunting from an academic perspective. It sent two investigators, Guy Lyon Playfair and Maurice Grosse, to examine the evidence. And to avert any claims of trickery, the society drafted in an independent barrister, Mary Rose Barrington, to double-check all of their work. This would ensure that there could be no credible claims that the pair were being anything other than meticulous, honest and impartial in their investigations. Sure enough, over the following 14 months they spent on the case, the two researchers catalogued a range of inexplicable phenomena. Boxes flew across rooms, ornaments floated in mid-air, books mysteriously appeared and disappeared. Strange knocking sounds were heard inside walls. Continued Over

The Enfield Poltergeist Cont. Continued From Over Soon afterwards Janet was even seen floating in midair - and this time there were two independent witnesses. A lollipop lady and a passing baker both glanced up at the house and through a top-floor window saw Janet apparently hovering above her bed. As Janet herself recalls it: “The lady saw me spinning around and banging against the window. I thought I might actually break the window and go through it. “A lot of children fantasise about flying, but it wasn’t like that. When you’re levitated with force and you don’t know where you’re going to land it’s very frightening. I still don’t know how it happened.”
who explained that “I had a haemorrhage and then I fell asleep and I died in a chair in the corner downstairs.”
Unfortunately for the girls, the recorder was running and caught their plotting on tape.
What could this mean? Astonishingly, subsequent research showed that long before the Hodgsons had moved in to the house, an old man called Bill Wilkins had indeed lived there. And he had died of a brain haemorrhage while sitting in a living room chair.
“They weren’t very good at playing tricks,” recalls Guy. “We always caught them out. What do you expect children to do? “I would have been more worried if they hadn’t played around from time to time. It means they were behaving like normal kids.”
“A lot of children fantasise about flying, but it wasn’t like that. When you’re levitated with force and you don’t know where you’re going to land it’s very frightening. I still don’t know how it happened”

The Enfield Poltergeist Cont. But, crucially, Janet estimates that only about one or two per cent of the many hundreds of separate paranormal phenomena that took place in the house were faked by her and Margaret and these were minor things like balancing a chair on top of a door and pretending that the poltergeist had done it. Besides, in many cases, it would have been physically impossible for the two young girls to have faked the evidence. How does a 12year old girl rip out a fireplace, or make a chair levitate in front of police officers? The barrister, Mary Rose Barrington, who reviewed the case on behalf of the Society for Psychical Research, is in no doubt that the investigators did a thorough and honest job.
passers-by - all seem convinced by what they saw. Nevertheless, some experts remain unconvinced. Professor Chris French, a psychologist at London University, is in no doubt that the girls were mischievous and enterprising: “Children can be very ingenious. I don’t buy the idea that kids can’t outwit intelligent investigators. “There are undoubtedly some things in the case that defy rational explanation, but that does not mean that they are real phenomena. “When you also consider the fact that people, no matter how sincere, are notoriously unreliable witnesses then you have to take this case with a very big pinch of salt.”
Perhaps so. But incredible though the events of Enfield were, they are Maurice Gross Some Years After far from Enfield unique.

It seems unlikely. But perhaps the last word should go to Janet herself. The Knights Of Hickling Broad They make their way out of the building and follow the road to Stalham Broad. Here they are rushed by a Saracen, rising in his turn from the waters, wielding a mighty scimitar.

Few ghosts have the good manners to keep to a set date for their happenings, but at Stalham Broad, Norfolk, it is said that two ghostly crusaders fight a deadly battle with a Saracen foe every August 2.

Is An Evil Spirit Lurking In Lewisham? A quiet terraced house in Lewisham is an unlikely setting for a haunting, but its residents swear an evil presence lurks in the bathroom. Lea Spencer and Eliza Wager say they have noticed things go bump in the night ever since they moved into the property in Roxley Road, one year ago. Footsteps in the corridor, knocking on the wall, and floating white blobs known as orbs have left the couple spooked but curious. So curious they set up a paranormal research group called London Ghost Hunters to investigate haunted properties across the capital. Mr Spencer, 39, says most of the activity happens in
the living room and he once saw a little boy with a cat. Ms Wager also explained : “When I moved in here I refused to go to the bathroom. I felt like I was suffocating and I pictured there was a child being hung.” She added, “I’ve been getting whispers, banging, walking along the corridors, toilet flushing. “They don’t bother me but I have got one evil one. The only one I’m concerned about is the baby. The other night we took photos around him and there were orbs all around him. He won’t go in the bathroom” A Local Group investigated The house and although several strange anomalies turned up, like a few specks of light
in the corner of the photo were apparently being evidence of a ghostly presence., nothing approaching evil was reported. Indeed, a Ouija board experiment was conducted and the name of a boy called “John” turned up. Could this have been the mysterious child Mr Spencer had seen with the cat? Junior Paranormal Watch — Story Corner
Shadows in The Mirror There was once a woman who lived by herself in a quaint house in the country. Her husband had passed away about 5 years back and she was planning on moving soon. One day, while packing up some of her husbands things, she noticed that the temperature dropped really low. She walked down the hall to check the thermostat, but when she got there it showed no difference in temperature. She thought about it but figured that it must be broken. She decided that she would call someone the next day to fix it. When she passed the mirror on the wall on her way back she thought she saw a movement of shadows in the reflection. Then the temperature suddenly returned to normal and when she looked back at the mirror nothing was there. She shrugged and went back to packing. A couple of days later the temperature dropped again. Again the woman went to the thermostat and again it showed no change. She remembered that she
had forgotten to call someone to repair it. She promised herself that she would call after her show on T.V. that she had been watching. When she passed the mirror she again saw the movement of shadows. She stopped. In the reflection she saw a shadow, nothing but a shadow. Slightly translucent but visible. The shape was indescribable. It changed shape, like water flowing, about the size of a tall person. It stepped out from the wall behind the woman, but when she turned around to face it there was nothing there. Now she was scared. She began to tremble. Slowly she turned back to the mirror. The figure was still there, and closer. She screamed out "HEEEEELLPPP!!!" but no one came. Closer and closer IT came...
A few weeks later a friend of the woman's stopped by to say Hi. She knocked and knocked but there was no answer. The next day a police officer came out to investigate, but he found nothing but a few empty boxes and the TV on. It was put down as an unsolved case. The house was soon cleaned out and put out on the market for sale. For many years the house was empty, what with all of the stories going around about it. But one day a small
family consisting of a mother, father and daughter moved from the city into the house. All was well until one day the temperature dropped in the house. The daughter went to her parents and asked them what happened. They said they didn't know and they went to the thermostat to see. It showed no change in temperature. They decided to call someone. The daughter went back to playing with her dolls in her room. Had she looked up into her mirror she would have seen a shadow peeking from behind the reflection of her bed. But just then her parents came in to tell her that someone was coming the next day to fix the thermostat and that she'll have to deal with it for a while, but when they finished saying this the temperature went back to normal. The parents said never mind.
“Had she looked up into her mirror she would have seen a shadow peeking from behind the reflection of her bed.”
A few weeks later the temperature dropped again. The girl was brushing her hair at the time, in front of her mirror. She saw the shadow behind the reflection as it started to creep towards her. She screamed. Her parents came in asking what happened. She told them but they didn't believe her. She tried to make them believe her but it was of no use. They took her to a psychologist to get her help. Continued Over

Junior Paranormal Watch — Story Corner Continued From over When she came home she believed it was all a figment of her imagination. She probably would have kept believing that except that about a year later the temperature dropped once again. The girl was by herself because her parents had gone to the theatre and left her alone, since she was 13 years old. She was experimenting with make-up at the time, in front of her mothers mirror. She stared in terror as the THING crept out from behind the bed. She trembled but didn't call out, she knew no one would come. And now, as done before, the THING came closer and closer, closer and closer... When the girls parents came home they had no one to come home to. The Police report said another unsolved case... The house still stands to this day.
The Little White dog There was an old woman who had no family still living. Her only friend was a little white dog who went everywhere with her - with one exception. The dog loved the fireplace in winter, and after the old woman went to bed he would sometimes go and lie in front of the warm coals. Usually though, the dog slept at the very edge of the bed on a throw rug. The woman wouldn't allow the dog on the bed with her,
but if she became frightened or had a nightmare, she would put her hand down to the little white dog and he would lick it reassuringly. One night the woman was reading her newspaper just before going to sleep. She shivered and pulled the comforter up around her as she read that a mental patient had wandered off from a nearby hospital. No one knew if the patient was dangerous of not; he was a suspect in the murders of several women who had lived alone. The woman turned out the lights and tried to sleep, but she was frightened, and tossed and turned fitfully. Finally, she reached down to where the little white dog slept. Sure enough, a warm, wet tongue began to lick her hand. The woman felt reassured and safe, and left her hand dangling off the bed as she turned and settled in comfortably. She opened her eyes for a moment and looked through the open door into the living room. There in front of the fireplace, sat her little white dog, gazing at the coals and wagging his tail. Down beside the bed, something was still licking her hand.
Something Was Wrong One morning, John Sullivan found himself walking along a street downtown. He could not explain what he was do-
ing there, or how he got there, or where he had been earlier. He didn't even know what time it was. He saw a woman walking toward him and stopped her. "I'm afraid I forgot my watch," he said, and smiled. "Can you please tell me the time?" When she saw him, she screamed and ran. The he noticed that other people were afraid of him. When they saw him coming, they flattened themselves against a building, or ran across the street to stay out of his way. "There must be something wrong with me," John thought. "I'd better go home." He hailed a taxi, but the driver took one look at him and sped away. "This is crazy!" he said to himself. John did not understand what was going on, and it scared him. "Maybe someone at home can come and pick me up." he thought. He found a telephone and called home, expecting his wife to answer. Instead, a strange voice answered. "Is Mrs. Sullivan there?" he asked. "I'm sorry, she isn't," the voice said. "Her husband died a few days ago in a horrible car crash, she's at his funeral."

When Asked If He Believes in the Paranormal, Mr. Downes Replied : “Do I believe that the Devil comes from the pits of Hell to wander around the gardens of North Devon? Of course not. But if you’re asking if there are things that can’t be explained by modern science, then yes. But human knowledge is expanding all the time. I believe that things that are currently put down to the paranormal will one day be explained by science.” He said the Devil's Footprint myth emerged at a time when many South Devon parishioners were angry at the clergy for changing the standard prayer book. When the tracks appeared, they blamed vicars for letting the devil in to their communities. "It was a piece of local politics which had nothing whatsoever to do with the paranormal," Mr Downes said.

Strange Night At Mount Cook, NZ Mt Cook village residents are stumped but not spooked by recent supernatural experiences in the national park's oldest mountain hut. Mountain guides, visitor centre employees, a helicopter pilot and a cafe manager have all reported paranormal experiences in and around the old hut high up on the Hooker Glacier. The Hooker hut was built nearly 100 years ago, is a three-hour walk from the visitor centre and sits about “We'd only 1100 metres above Mt been in bed for Cook village. about 15 minutes when I Department of Conserheard footsteps vation (DOC) mountain on the deck guide Jane Morris and outside, It visitor centre assistant sounded like Monica Yeoman experisomeone was enced the surreal when unloading a they spent the night of pack. their lives in the hut last Friday. "The noise was constant until I heard the sound of an ice axe hitting the corrugated iron. It certainly wasn't an animal as the disturbance sounded organised.
Ms Morris said she understands their account of paranormal activity could be cause for ridicule. However, she believes there has been a lack of investigation into the countless reports of spooky happenings in the hut. Both of them explained the spooky happenings in and around the hut and the lack of investigation surrounding events.
The pair left the village after work and arrived at the hut around dusk on March 20. It wasn't until they had finished dinner and hopped into their
sleeping bags that things started to rattle in the night. "We'd only been in bed for about 15 minutes when I heard footsteps on the deck outside," Ms Morris said.
"The noises were quite purposeful," Ms Morris said. Both of them admitted to being "freaked out" initially but agreed the experience was intriguing once they got use to the noises. They left the hut the following morning to continue the day hike and returned in the afternoon to retrieve some gear. Ms Morris said she felt a presence on her return to the hut although it wasn't menacing. Both women said they are keen to return to the hut to discount any scepticism.

"It sounded like someone was unloading a pack. "The noise was constant until I heard the sound of an ice axe hitting the corrugated iron. "It certainly wasn't an animal as the disturbance sounded organised." Ms Yeoman had woken by that stage and both went outside to look around only to discover nothing. After returning to bed, it was only a matter of five minutes before both women heard what they described as the sound of pots clanging. It was a sleepless night for both of them after that as the relentless sound of clanging and shuffling continued.
For more than 50 years, there have been numerous reports of paranormal activities at Hooker hut. Peter Graham outlined his experience with the ghost of Hooker hut in Mick Bowie's book The Hermitage Years. Graham was the proprietor of the Glacier Hotel at the Franz Josef Glazier for many years and his infamous tale was often told in the light of an open fire late in the evening. The original hut was built in 1910 and rebuilt in 1948. On its original site, it was visible from the Hermitage and was considered quite a landmark. However, in 1963 it was moved back intact some 40 metres on to new foundations, away from ominous cracks in the crumbling moraine wall and out of sight from the Hermitage. Tam Kinnear-Swift

Money DOES Grow On Trees In Hawaii Kuulei Mata said she brought home fresh coconuts from a local market and cracked some of them open. She was disappointed to find that one, and then another, had water but no meat. The Coconut With The $5 Bill Inside it t is a mystery to a family in Pearl City, Hawaii, and they swear it really happened. A woman said she found a $5 bill inside a coconut.
The coconuts were so bad she was going to return them and ask for her money back. Then she cracked open another one and reached inside. "I went in with my fingers and out came this money. I didn't realize it was $5," Kuulei Mata said.
"I called my husband and said, 'Look! Look!'" Ron Mata had been watching TV. He said sure enough, his wife produced $5 from the coconut, which had been in a refrigerator. "So I grabbed it. It was a wet, damp and cold $5 bill she got. I said, 'No! No way,'" Ron Mata said. The couple has no idea how the money found its way into the hard shell fruit. The Matas understand sceptics saying, "It's too good to be true. It's like, believe it or not, you know?"
Aldwych Station — Alive With Spirits Aldwych station was open in 1907. The line was originally part of the Piccadilly line. With being so close to many West End theatres, it gained the unofficial title of the Theatre Line. Aldwych station itself was built on the site of an old London theatre - the Royal Strand. During the Second World War the line was closed and the tunnels used as an air raid shelter and to store various national treasures from the British Museum, including the Elgin Marbles. This station was closed in 1994 because the cost of refurbishing the lifts at the station could not be justified. It is still currently used
for parties, opening nights and for film sets. Numerous people have claimed to have seen the ghost who haunts Aldwych station on the tracks at night, mainly by staff who clean the tunnels and stations. The ghost is believed to be an actress who believes she has not enjoyed her last curtain call. Aldwych used to be on the site of the old Royal Strand Theatre.

Phantom Aircraft Over Derwent Valley at a nearby cafe and alerted the police in Chesterfield. The duty officer checked with local airports and reported back to the puzzled family that 'there was no record of any aircraft in the vicinity at that time.'
A newspaper cutting from around the time of Tony’s sighting A Sheffield woman called Doreen Ashall described will never forget the 'ghost plane' which turned an ordinary day out into a magical mystery tour. Doreen had been on a day-trip to Derbyshire with her husband Gordon, their daughter and son-in-law. The family were travelling in the Ashall's four wheeled drive and had reached a crossroads at Grindleford when they saw what Doreen described as 'a huge old plane' flying low in the sky, and apparently heading straight towards them. Gordon, who was driving, almost went into a ditch and Doreen said she was tempted to duck her head as the plane swooped silently above the startled foursome before disappearing from sight. The couple were so certain the plane would have collided with one of the nearby rocky fells if it had continued in its flight path that they stopped
The Ashall's were left with an experience that was both striking and real to them but for which there was no obvious explanation. Doreen said: 'It was definitely real and I saw everything and no one can tell me did not see it. I'm sure I saw what I saw.' Equally sure was a Chesterfield man called Tony Ingle, who was so puzzled by what he saw in the sky over the Peak District that he contacted a local newspaper. Tony was enjoying a holiday break at a caravan park at Hope when he decided to take his golden retriever Ben for a walk one sunny April afternoon in 1995. As they strolled along leafy Aston Lane, Tony suddenly put a foot backwards in time...and was astounded to see what appeared to be a wartime aircraft flying between forty and sixty feet in the air above him. 'It was very eerie...I could see the propellers going round but there was no sound,' Tony said. 'It was getting lower and lower and I thought "crikey, this thing's going to crash..." It was bizarre...I could see it was banking as if trying to turn, and then it seemed to go down just over a hedge. I
ran up the lane to see if I could see anything. I expected a plane to be in the field but there was nothing...just lambs and sheep. Everything was silent, you could hear a pin drop...the best way I can describe it was as if someone had died; it was terrible, a very eerie sensation.' Tony has been back to Aston Lane many times but Ben refuses to go anywhere near the field where the plane appeared to crash. 'He just cowers and won't budge and the only time I tried to pull him along he just slipped his collar,' he said. Before his experience, Tony did not believe in ghosts but now he is not so sure. 'I have racked my brains for a logical explanation but I can't find one. I can't explain it; I saw that plane all right, and it disappeared before my eyes.' Coincidentally Tony's sighting came just a short while after plaques commemorating two wartime tragedies, which claimed the lives of a dozen Allied airmen, were unveiled in the hills of the Peak. The air crashes, just two of fifty separate accidents which have claimed the lives of more than two hundred pilots and crew since the Second World War, have added to the sinister reputation of the mountains among fliers.

Phantom Aircraft Over Derwent Valley Cont. Continued From Over These tragedies of half a century ago have become woven into local folklore and have more recently provided the backdrop to a string of reports describing 'ghost An Avro Lancaster Mk1, Of The planes' which Type That Would Have Been Used have baffled both By The Damn Busters the emergency services who have responded to calls of crashing planes and local historians who have struggled to explain them. “the woman said she distinctly saw four engines with propellers whirling round. She watched it fly past and disappear into the trees before turning to her husband but at first she did not dare to say anything in case he had not seen it. Her fear evaporated when she saw the look of shock etched upon his face and before she could utter a word he turned to her and said 'Did you see that?''
For experiences of Tony Ingle and the Ashall family are certainly not unique. Over the last ten years the high moors between Sheffield and Manchester have become the scene of dozens of sightings of phantom planes. They are generally described as large, propdriven machines of Second World War vintage, make no noise and vanish before the eyes of startled witnesses, often leaving them with the impression that the plane has 'crashed.' A number of witnesses have said that the plane they saw was so low they instinctively felt the urge to 'duck' their heads as it passed overhead. No sign of a crash has ever been found when searches have been carried out by the police and mountain rescue teams. Derwent Valley's historian Vic
Hallam said it was during this same period that rumours first began to circulate describing ghost fliers in this part of the Derwent Valley. Before that time there were stories about phantom organ music and bells ringing in the steeple of drowned church at Derwent, which can on rare occasions be glimpsed above the water when the reservoirs are low. Vic runs a small museum dedicated to the Dambusters Squadron which is housed in a tower in the Derwent Dam itself. Many hundreds of visitors have visited the displays of memorabilia and a number of them have volunteered their own sightings of ghostly wartime aircraft around the reservoirs. 'It's a real puzzle, but the ordinary people who see these things are genuine, they are not cranks.' Vic told me. The one story which impressed him the most was that of a woman who had been sat in a car with her husband enjoying a cup of tea from a flask on the Ladybower viaduct, near the site of the lost village. It was a fine, sunny afternoon and as she glanced sideways through the window she saw a plane fly past the car 'as quiet as a mouse.'
It was a large, dark coloured bomber of the Lancaster type and the woman said she distinctly saw four engines with propellers whirling round. She watched it fly past and disappear into the trees before turning to her husband but at first she did not dare to say anything in case he had not seen it. Her fear evaporated when she saw the look of shock etched upon his face and before she could utter a word he turned to her and said 'Did you see that?'' She came and asked about it in 1998 wanting to know if the Lancaster which sometimes visits had come over,' Vic explained. 'But I had to tell her there was no question about there being a four-engined bomber in the area at that time. They were also clear that the aircraft they saw was an old wartime Lancaster, which is nothing like the Hercules transports we sometimes get over the valley. The pair of them were literally staggered and the lack of sound is unaccountable because if it was a real Lancaster you would have been able to hear the familiar growling sound of the engines for miles.'

inexplicable happenings in the Derwent valley increases. On the surface, some of these sightings appear to be virtual replays of actual tragic events which have taken place up to fifty years ago in these hills. Peak Park Ranger Brian Jones, who is based at the Fairholmes Visitors Centre near Ladybower, says the rescue services receive several reports of supposed 'crashed planes' from the Derbyshire moors every year, to the extent that this kind of sighting has become almost a regular event. The sincerity and shock displayed by callers sometimes leads even the emergency services into believing real aircraft must have come down.

The Alien With The Scandinavian Accent Cont. Continued From Over A letter from RAF Wattisham to the MoD and Norfolk police described it as "one of our more unusual UFO reports". Three years later two air traffic controllers at London's Heathrow Airport reported seeing a black, inverted boomerang-shaped UFO from their control tower. It was stationary then moved steadily in the morning sun, the files say. A week earlier on a coastal road in Louth, Lincolnshire, several people had reported similar sightings of a large, triangular-shaped object with three lights. Many witnesses reportedly stopped their cars and got out for a better look before it turned on its axis and zoomed off "at 500mph towards north west". Other accounts of strange lights and unexplained objects had plausible explanations. In November 1990, the crews of six RAF Tornado jets reported being overtaken by a "giant UFO" while flying over Germany. They thought it was a test flight for the then top-secret US Stealth fighter, but it turned out to be the burning debris from a Soviet rocket body used to launch a satellite into orbit.
On 31 March 1993 various reports of moving lights over south-west England and south Wales were later traced to the re-entry of a Russian Cosmos rocket body. The files suggest it had burned up, disintegrating over the North Atlantic. In 1992, a bright cigarshaped object seen flying silently over central London at night triggered a "spate" of sightings, notably in Ilford and Romford. “Many witnesses reportedly stopped their cars and got out for a better look before it turned on its axis and zoomed off "at 500mph towards north west".
It was later identified "almost certainly" as an illuminated airship advertising the Ford Mondeo car.
I don't think there's any solid evidence that we have been visited by intelligent life but I don't think you can rule that out.
"There are many good examples of puzzling things, for example seen on radar by the military, that need investigating." The files, which can be downloaded from the National Archives website, are being released as part of a three-year project. These latest documents are the first containing information written by defence intelligence staff to be made public. Dr Clarke said they were among tens of thousands of secret files contaminated with asbestos and were in danger of being destroyed. They were eventually saved after a campaign by historians to rescue them from the old War Office building in Whitehall. Tam Kinnear-Swift
UFO expert Dr David Clarke said: "The vast majority of reports are ordinary things seen in extraordinary situations. "So many things can be interpreted as unusual, you've got to eliminate all that noise and see what's left.
