CALENDAR OF EVENTS JANUARY Apalachicola Oyster Cook-Off – This fun-filled event features lots of oysters, live music, kids’ activities and local beer. 30A Songwriters Festival – An action packed weekend of original music from some of the country’s best singer/songwriters in intimate settings across South Walton, typically held over Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend.

FEBRUARY Sandestin Gumbo Festival – Held in the lively Village of Baytowne Wharf and featuring the hottest local chefs competing to win the coveted best gumbo of the year award. Mardi Gras Dog Parade – This may be the most fun Mardi Gras celebration of all! The ever popular Krewe of Arfeous parade takes place in Sandestin and stars four-legged friends on decorated wagons and golf carts.

MARCH International Ocean Film Tour – Adventure. Action. Ocean Life. Volume 5 of this fascinating film tour will bring ocean themed excitement to the Watersound Origins community.

Seaside Half Marathon and 5K – Sponsored by Vera Bradley, this popular race often sells out in advance. It features weekend long events such as the delectable Taste of the Race. St. George Island Chili Cook-Off – Some like it hot at this spicy festival! JULY Rags to Riches Regatta – Spend the day at Grayton Beach watching beautiful rainbowcolored sailboats engage in friendly competition as they race from Grayton to Seagrove Beach, held in honor of Independence Day. 4th of July Celebrations – From Sandestin to 30A, there is no shortage of ways to pay tribute to the U.S.A. OCTOBER South Walton Fashion Week – A seven-day series of captivating fashion events highlighting both national and local designers and boutiques. Rosemary Beach Uncorked – A unique fall festival celebrating Rosemary Beach’s eclectic selection of dining establishments, featuring specially-prepared cuisine paired with fine wines. Trick or Treating – Seaside, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach and Sandestin are the destinations of choice for Halloween celebrations. Costumed town merchants hand out goodies among dazzling decorations.

30A Half Marathon and 5k – A new race event with a scenic out-and-back course that showcases the beauty of 30A. Craft Beer Festivals – Three beer festivals highlight local, domestic and international craft beers with live music and an incredible assortment of bites from some of South Walton’s best restaurants.

MountainFilm festival features outdoorinspired short documentaries and films, projected against the backdrop of WaterColor’s lake-side amphitheater. Florida Seafood Festival – Apalachicola’s famous festival featuring arts and crafts, live music, blue crab races, a parade and oyster eating contests!

Noche de Los Muertos – Alys Beach’s annual “Night of the Dead” revival is an adults-only Halloween celebration featuring unexpected costumes, world-class DJs and grown-up fun at the beautiful Caliza Pool.

30A 10K and Fun Run – An annual fundraising race event for local charities, the 30A 10K is held on Thanksgiving morning in Rosemary Beach and features a fast and flat out-and-back route designed for running enthusiasts.

Flutterby Arts Festival – A children’s art festival held in celebration of the annual migration of the Monarch butterfly. Salt Air 30A Michaelanne Lauderdale’s journey to becoming a 30A local begins much like most of the people who call South Walton home. Having vacationed in Seagrove since childhood, she brought her now husband Matt for a Gulf Coast getaway. A California native, Matt became enchanted with the area as well. After experiencing the loss of both of their fathers to cancer, the couple decided to make the leap and move to the beach where their hearts longed to be. The pair worked at different area companies before realizing a need in the community for a luxury bicycle shop where customers could interact with the staff and choose rentals based on personal styles and preferences versus only having the choice of standard rental bikes. The Lauderdales opened Salt Air 30A in 2014 at The Hub on East 30A along with a side business, Motorboatin’ 30A, a guided pontoon rental in Lake Powell, a nearby coastal dune lake. “The customer experience is so important to us,” says Michaelanne. “I love meeting the people who come to the shop and hearing their stories as well as sharing ours. The open and friendly nature of the 30A community sets it apart from other places we’ve lived and makes it such a welcoming environment to create a business.” Through their work at Salt Air 30A, Matt and Michealanne quickly realized the need for their operation to expand beyond rentals to include retail and repair. Frankie’s Bike Shop debuted in February of this year also located at The Hub. Named after their young daughter, Frankie’s offers bicycle sales from select brands including Electra and Felt, the latest in biking accessories and bicycle

repairs. In addition, the Lauderdales launched Heron Bike Company to manufacture a line of high quality, stylish beach cruisers perfect for rental fleets. Heron brand bikes are also available for purchase at Frankie’s.

Grayton Beer Company Turning a hobby into a career may be the easiest way to find fulfillment in your work, and Grayton Beer Company founder Jamey Price is a prime example. When Jamey and wife, Candace, decided that South Walton would be the place to raise their family, they set out to create a business that would enhance the local economy while also appealing to tourists, the area’s main staple. “We came up with a number of ideas but my passion for beer won in the end,” explains Jamey. “By creating a production brewery for the locals in the coastal region, it would give us a platform to introduce our beer to tourists, and in turn have ingrained brand recognition throughout our distribution footprint.” Grayton Beer Company began brewing in 2014 with four classic American craft beers, a Blonde, a Pale Ale, an Amber and a Whitbier on tap. The brewery has grown significantly each year eclipsing 15,000 barrels of beer produced in 2017, with projections to go over 20,000 barrels in 2018. They now have a six-state distribution footprint that includes Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee and over 50 full-time employees. Continued on next page

MADE ON 30A Jamey strives to incorporate the influence of home into the brews the company creates. “We recently introduced our 30A Rosé. The 30A Rosé Gose is inspired by the abundant salt from the water in our backyard and the colors of our vibrant sunsets. Along with our Staff Pale Ale, Fish Whistle IPA and 30A Beach Blonde Ale, our 30A Rosé is available in cans. We will continue to build on our barrelaged program and release seasonal beers.” Located just north of Highway 98 between Rosemary Beach and Grayton Beach, tours and tastings can be scheduled at the brewery which also features The Taproom with a 25-tap draft wall pouring year-round styles along with special brews you can’t find anywhere else. Live music and special events are regularly scheduled, and you’ll often find the space packed with locals catching up over a cold one. New for the company in 2018 is the debut of Grayton Beer Company Brewpub in Grayton Beach. Beginning in April, the fully operational brewery, restaurant and bar will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.

boutiques across South Walton in Seaside, Seacrest and Grand Boulevard at Sandestin along with a recently relaunched online shop. “We have customers from all over the country,” adds Tori. “Sometimes they order their suits and outfits before they come here to vacation, and then we get to meet them in person while they’re here. Of course, you don’t need to live or vacation on 30A to be an Ophelia girl so our intention with the online shop is to offer our lifestyle to women everywhere.”

Tori strives to create a complete experience for her shoppers that takes the stress out of buying a swimsuit, something that many women often experience. In the design of her newest store at Grand Boulevard, Tori took great care to make the space to feel clean, refreshing and allow the merchandise to take center stage. She incorporates local designers into her product lines when she can and loves to highlight new designers that are on the cusp of making it big.

Ophelia Swimwear Originally from Louisiana, Tori Von Hoene lived in South Walton five years before opening Ophelia Swimwear in 2010 with the dream of capturing the 30A lifestyle for women that both lived in the area and those on vacation. She carefully curated a distinctive offering of designer swimwear, clothing and accessories that reflected the spirit and beauty of the coastal towns in Northwest Florida. “Our style is elevated and a bit eclectic—it’s a collection of things you can’t find just anywhere,” says Tori. “Our shoppers tell us all the time that when they wear our pieces, the suits and outfits are special and recognizably from our shop. The Ophelia girl has that classically cool feel and so do the women of 30A.” After initially opening with one location, Ophelia now has three separate

INSPIRATION CELEBRATING OUR SPECTACULAR LOCAL ECO-SYSTEMS

E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center Established in 2009 by Walton County resident and nationally renowned conservationist M.C. Davis, the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center is part of the Nokuse Plantation, a 50,000-acre parcel of conservation land. The Center is named after, and dedicated to, distinguished scientist Dr. Edward O. Wilson, who has dedicated his life to educating the public about the importance of conserving the world’s biodiversity. The center employs exhibits, programs and activities designed to nurture a love for all living things, or “biophilia.” LEARN

ENGAGE

During the school year, the Biophilia Center educates an average of 100 students a day in fourth and seventh grades. Students visit the center free of charge for two- and four-day programs that are filled with over twenty different environmental science lessons. The curriculum offered coincides with Florida’s education standards while promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. Students are provided opportunities for inquiry, investigation and innovation by gaining a better understanding and knowledge of their natural surroundings.

The Center hosts Where the Wild Things Run, a 5K Trail Run and 1 Mile Fun Run through the woods in October. Additional events include summer public hours, members-only events and camp-ins throughout the year. In Summer 2018, the Center will debut Camp Longleaf, a week-long summer camp program designed for rising fourth to eighth graders. Northwest Florida’s most valuable asset is without question its natural environment with breathtaking beaches, hundreds of miles of protected forests and intricate waterways attracting visitors from near and far. With a goal of promoting preservation and conservation, two outstanding research centers offer interactive, hands on experiences that offer insight into the delicate and unique eco-systems found along the coast. In Franklin County, the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve includes the Reserve Nature Center with opportunities to learn about stewardship of the Apalachicola River and Bay. Walton County’s E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center on the Nokuse Plantation in Freeport educates with interpretive exhibits as well as an extensive trail system. Each center provides public and school-based education programs with similar missions of promoting preservation of Florida’s natural resources.

Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve Nature Center Open since 2011, The Reserve Nature Center features a variety of educational, interactive and live exhibits. Multiple aquariums display local fauna from the river, estuary, bay and Gulf. A theater room features showings of a short documentary highlighting the Apalachicola River and Bay eco-system while boardwalks that surround the system showcase marsh and flatwood habitats and end with a platform overlooking St. George Sound. Adjacent Millender Park provides public access to picnic pavilions and a bayshore beach. LEARN

ENGAGE

Educational programs focus on K-12 students and teachers in Franklin County and are designed to support the long tradition of the community’s stewardship of Apalachicola Bay. Each year, Franklin County students participate in hands-on ecology programs that are aligned with specific grade standards. A variety of workshops that are open to the public include Bay-Friendly Landscaping, Seagrass Snorkel Class, Oysters 101, a weekly Sea Turtle Talk during sea turtle nesting season and a monthly ‘Reserve Wednesday’ talk with topics relating to the area’s interconnected coastal communities.

Each fall, the center hosts National Estuaries Day where attendees are invited to tour the Nature Center, interact with ANERR staff and volunteers and play educational games while learning about estuarine ecology. Additional annual events include Archaeology Day in spring, and a Birding the Bay celebration in April with guided birding tours in the coastal and upland habitats of the reserve.
