No high-rise condominiums or amusement parks line the coast, just classic beach homes and laid-back seafood dives. Aptly named “The Forgotten Coast,” you’ll find a diverse selection of small waterside towns including St. George Island, Apalachicola, Carrabelle, Port St. Joe, Cape San Blas and many more. BACKYARD

BR E WHAHA THE HUMBLE BEGINNINGS OF OYSTER CITY BREWING COMPANY Shelley Shepard, a top sales executive with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Beach Properties of Florida, likes a good beer. So when she got the opportunity to be a part of opening a brewery, she went for it, having had no idea that it would spark a passion beginning simply with brewing beer in her backyard.

so how hard could it be!” laughs Shelley. Shelley and Rex began studying all things beer, and purchased a 10-gallon homebrew system for their backyard. Shelley would rise before the sun to work on brews, and once she had her first drinkable beer, she was hooked! She loved playing around with recipes and yeasts and creating new varieties. Meanwhile Rex and the other partners secured a location to build the commercial brewing facility, just across the street from the Owl Café. Oyster City Brewing Company was born in May 2014 with its debut beer, Mill Pond Dirty Blonde.

A part owner of the beloved Owl Café and Tap Room in Apalachicola, Shepard’s husband, Rex Humphries, and his partners, Susan and Cassie Gary, discovered a need for a homegrown brewery when customers continually requested a local draft—and all they had to offer was a craft beer from Pensacola, “Like most things over three hours away. Since that initial year where the in the Apalachicola Alongside friend and alcohol operation was run solely by the community, the salesman Bo Walker, the partners, Oyster City has grown entrepreneurs set out to create into a fully-operational, staffed brewery has been a a craft brewery with varieties that brewery with 12 varieties on village-wide effort would reflect the unique culture of draft including Hooter Brown Ale, supported by the this charming fishing town. “Bo had First Light of Day Summer Ale, residents and infused an experienced brewer friend that Apalach IPA, Mangrove Pale Ale was willing to consult for us and and Mill Pond Dirty Blonde. These with elements SGI.BeachPropertiesFLA.com | 850.927.6000 write some start-up recipes. So, five flavors are in distribution from that reflect the we had an idea and a consultant, Pensacola to Ocala in restaurants, area’s identity.” but none of us had ever brewed bars and growler stores as draft an ounce of beer...but the partners beer only. knew how to make great food, “In the beginning of the adventure,

I was the primary test-batch brewer, brewing over 60 ten gallon batches of beer before we ever brewed on our commercial system. Once the commercial system was up and running, I’d still do test batches to try and tweak new recipes,” explains Shelley. “Now I just help with some of the new recipe development, specialty beers and miscellaneous fun things, in addition to my day job selling real estate, of course.” Like most things in the closeknit Apalachicola community, the brewery has been a village-wide effort supported by the residents and infused with elements that reflect the area’s identity. A boat

transom made by Bo’s stepfather houses the tap line while Susan uses some of the spent grain to make homemade bread for the Owl Café.. The tap handles are oyster culling irons made by an area oysterman, primarily used to break apart clumps of oysters and measure for legal sizes. “We use locally-harvested tupelo honey and for some specialty brews, we’ll put callouts on social media for local ingredients like lemongrass, kumquats and prickly pears. Folks love bringing bags of backyard fruit to participate!” adds Shelley. Well-received by both beer critics and connoisseurs, Oyster City’s Hooter Brown Ale has won the People’s Choice award at Brewfest Tallahassee for the past three years and a Gold medal at the Destin Beer Festival. Hooter Brown Ale was even referenced in a recent Southern Living article as the beer of choice when visiting South Walton and 30A. Accolades just inspire the team to work harder. “We all taste, compare and critique our beers at home and on the road, and our brew master continuously works to make it better and better,” says Shelley. “At the end of the day, it’s hard to beat enjoying an ice-cold beer and looking at that glass knowing, ‘I made this.’ It’s an incredible sense of accomplishment.”

BEHIND THE LABEL Oyster City currently brews 12 varieties, with five in distribution. Each brew has a fun story behind its recipe and name. A few highlights: Mill Pond Dirty Blonde Ale: Intended to be a blonde named after Apalachicola’s commercial boat marina, Mill Pond, the final recipe came out a bit darker than a true blonde so they called her ‘Dirty.’ She’s a lighter beer with a little more body than a typical blonde. Red Snapper IPA: Brewed only during the Federal Red Snapper fishing season, this IPA gets its lovely red color from juicing 100 pounds of fresh BEETS on brew morning and adding it to the boil kettle at flameout. Yes, beets, the root vegetable. Midnight in the Oasis: A cumulative blend of Hooter Brown Ale aged in whiskey barrels for two years. Coveted by whiskey lovers with a whopping 10% ABV! This strong brew gets its named from the infamous dive bar, the Riverfront Oasis, where the brewery now stands.

Venture to Dog Island, a six-mile barrier island just off the coast of Carrabelle accessible only by boat or plane, for shelling, hiking, crabbing and a picnic.

Begin the day with coffee and a breakfast sandwich at Carrabelle Junction followed by an oldfashioned Southern-style dinner at Hog Wild Bar-B-Q.

Follow the four-mile High Bluff Hiking Trail through the coastal scrub habitat to reach amazing vistas of the Gulf and forest in Tate’s Hell State Forest.
