So it's done and dusted!
FIND YOUR WAY ‘ROUND
Our first annual remix competition is over and we have our winners. What a ride it's been. Six months have past since we announced the competition with a whopping R 55 K in prizes up for grabs and it's really been amazing to see how many talented producers there are in our midst. Check out page 21 to view the winners. You may or may not know by now that we've also launched a sister magazine called Muse Magazine - A LIVE music magazine for those partial to “real instruments” as musicians call it, heh heh. But if you still dig your music electronic based and are part of the dance generation then you're holding the right mag right here, right now! We're kinda partial to both. Dance music rocks, but then rock music rocks too so we'll be wearing our different party hats at different times of the month. And does it really matter? We just love music... and in particularly South African music so forgive us if we indulge ourselves in trying to cover everything SA music related. And the some... So if you're a house-head, a psy-hippy, a hip-hopster, a weird electronica kid or a funked up soul brother... you're in good company, 'cos BPM's gonna give you some of that juice. Of course if you're a rock n roller, metal head, indie lover, emo kid and generally get your kicks outta bands, then look out for Muse magazine. It's everywhere!!!

The Quantized One

J QT is probably one of the sickest compilers, producers and DJ brands in the country. Yet he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves funny that, makes you wonder why his musical genius has been neglected for so long. I went on a mission to chat to the genius behind “the Quantized one”… So how is life at Sheer Music? Life is cool here. I can’t complain it’s just that it’s that time of the year where things get very hectic because we have to prepare for Xmas so it’s very busy. So tell us a bit about the Quantized Mix series? The Quantized series started in 2006 and the concept of the album was to cater for the elite market with the soulful deep sounds. I wanted this to be a different project from the ones that I release for my DJs here at Sheer. Music changes with
rest of the world like Mahoota, Rocco, Arthur Mafokate, DJ Gregory, Blackcoffee, T-Man, Groove Amada and more, so look out for Mix 4 in 2009. Where do you see DJ QT in the next five years? Honestly speaking I see myself owning my own Sheer Music called Quantized Records. Who would you like to play alongside anywhere in the world? It’s difficult to answer this one because I have played alongside almost all the S.A DJs, if not all, and overseas I don’t really have a DJ that I would really die for, and like I said, music changes with times so whoever is hot at the time, it will be great sharing a stage with and teach him my ones and twos of the Quantized one, LOL!! So how many SAMA’s do you plan to take home this year? I don’t think I would take any because my music is a mixture of international and local music so the SAMAS are about South African Music so people like us are being over looked. For e.g. don’t you think that Tembisa Funk had a chance to battle for Song of the Year last year? So you see what I’m talking about?
Music Producer By Dave Mac

J Mphulo lives, breathes ... loves music. You can hear it in everything he talks about. Producing tracks since ’97, with a string of hits under his belt and having co-written various styles from house to kwaito, he runs his own successful label, Monate Fela Records and has chosen Sheer Music for the release of his new album, Caramel Fudge. I caught up with him late one Friday afternoon for a quick-fire Q&A. He was in a good mood ... So your new album is a fully fledged Sheer album release...How’s life at Sheer? Yeah it’s cool. We’ll see how it works out. Each label has its own set of problems so I will see how things go with this release ... So tell us a bit about the Caramel Fudge album ... Well the first single The Man has had high rotation and now the next single Take Me Home Tonight is playlisted everywhere and the albums only been out a week (at time of interview, Ed) so it’s all happening. You excited ... relieved that it’s now out? Aah man I’m so busy with so many releases and DJs/producers on my own label that I don’t really stop to think about it that much. You know it’s just a part of the whole
process ... all working together with my guys on Monate Fela so you know it’s not just about me or my album but all of us. You’ve been producing since ’97. A lot has changed in the studio since then ... (Laughs) Yeah we used to use a sampler that could take like a one bar beat, one melody and one bassline. But I’m still old-skool. I like to work with keyboards, not just software and sound-banks. In fact I hardly use the bank sounds and if I do I will stretch it, change it until it’s my own sound you know! Your DJ Top 10 that you submitted has a lot of SA producers listed ... SA House music is rocking man. That’s the thing. Guys like Mavalous DJ, TMan, DJ Pepsi & Wakes ... this stuff is good enough for labels like Soulfuric man. I play this music out. It works. Local house music is becoming bigger than the overseas stuff here and it’s cool. I dig it. And now we’re remixing their tracks too. I’ve just done a remix for Brazilian Soul’s Brazilian Sound Crew for Conya Recs ... DJ Mpulo ... what a cool dude.

his month Ubercool turns its ears to three mucho-anticipated new releases: Trip-Hop heavyweights Herbaliser release Same As It Never Was, ending their loving 15 year stint at Ninjatune with their debut at K7!, a strippeddown foray into the 70s funk they hold so dear. After 14 years (!!) of relative silence, the man who put sampling and mixing on the map in the late Eighties with Beat Dis, then lay down the signature for Trip-Hop with 91's Unknown Territories and later gave us the massive Bug Powder Dust – Bomb the Bass is back! And those darlings of stylish minimalism, one foot tappin' in bouncy club world, and the other comfortable in Thinking Man's Electro, Booka Shade drop their eagerly awaited The Sun and The Neon Light.

BOMB THE BASS
M
usically speaking, unless you're a member of the Rolling Stones, 14 years is a long time. In the world of Pop and Dance, it's a small aeon. When Bomb the Bass' last fulllength album Clear hit the streets in 1995, Acid-Jazz was reaching its peak, and MC Hammer still had money ... Between Clear's classic Bug Powder Dust and his exploding-to-fame debut Beat Dis from 87', Bomb the Bass had left an undeniable impression on Electronic music, especially on the way Acid-Jazz and its future siblings and offspring would evolve. And then he disappeared. Much of Bomb the Bass' silence was spent in Simenon's producing and remixing of the likes of Massive Attack, Bjork, and Depeche Mode, and launching a record company ... But the recording itch was still there. In fact, Simenon's been quoted as saying that he'd started toying with ideas for what would become 2008's Future Chaos as early as 1997. But what will Bomb the Bass (even the name sounds dated, recalling names like Def Dames Dope and Technotronic ...!) sound like in the new world of music, with its new shinier ears? The title to Future Chaos might as well have been 'And now for something completely different', no kidding. Check the review on pg 38.

H – depending on where you go, diving into the past can be such fun! On their new spank Same As It Never Was, The Herbaliser dive into all they love from the Seventies and splash around big time ... Ditching the crappy sound and smelly flower-dripping clothes, they keep the smiley sunshine, some brass-heavy funk, and, in the loverly guise of Lunnonite Jessica Darling, some seriously belting soul. But what’s about ze Hip and ze Hop, this is still The Herbaliser right? Yessir, cheell: stop frettin' and dig in ... Same As It Never Was is ALL Herbaliser. The Herbaliser are one of the bigger names associated with the scratch/Acid-Jazz/Trip-Hop world, but unlike many of their alumni, they haven't lost relevance in the edgier, fast-shifting and more sophisticated musical landscapes of today. Interestingly, in The Herbaliser's case – the progression through their career seems more like retrogression, though without the term's negative connotations. Starting out as a funk and hip-hop loving DJ-duo, they have quietly gravitated towards collaboration and live instrumentation. Today, The Herbaliser is a Band. With songs. And it's not a bad thing – retaining their polished-detail production, and fondness for the ol' scratch, they've stretched into song-based territory, and it's obvious all of Same As It Never Was was designed with live performance in mind. With half the album built from loud, brasshappy funk, and centred around Darling's grainy, formidable voice, the other side is predominantly MC-led (forget Westside vs. Eastside – both sides of the ATLANTIC are represented ...) with meandering, quirky instrumentals bringing up the cheek. Check out the review on pg 38.
T
here's a theme building here ... both The Herbaliser and Bomb the Bass' latest releases reveal a perceived stylistic shift in their respective musical careers, the kind of progression whose traces only becomes apparent in retrospect. And lo – with Booka Shade's club-bouncing, compilation-populating singles circa 2004's Memento and follow-up Movements acting as bright camouflage, the upcoming release, The Sun and The Neon Light, is set to illuminate their particular shifting. Only, in Booka Shade's case, the shift isn't linear – it's more of a loving swinging between the emotive physicality of Dance anthems and the textured artistry of earphone-space. With The Sun and The Neon Light, if the pre-released single Karma Car is anything to go by, Booka Shade are dimming the lights on the blatantly anthemic and aiming to marry the beat and the art.

N life you get what you want. This may sound a tad oversimplified but when you cut through all the chaff it really is what life boils down to. Sure, circumstances do play a role but as you get older and you reach a stage when you are able to start reflecting on at least a part of your life (say at the grand old age of 30 or so, heh heh) you will realise that the sum of all the parts of your existence, to whatever point you have reached at that moment, have got you there ... define you at that present time. Take psy-trance’s best known exports; Infected Mushroom have always wanted to be a big stadium rock band, Skazi’s intentions were clear from the outset ... debauched guitar rock-star! ... And Astrix! Perhaps the most refined of all psy-trance stars worldwide ... our very own Paul Van Dyk of psy-trance. Having cracked the Top 20 on the now globally accepted world DJ charts (as hosted annually by DJMag) after steady rises of more than 20 positions in both 2005 and 2006, Astrix (Avi Shmailov to his mom) can take a long hard look at himself in the mirror and smile broadly. He keeps good company with the biggest names in the world of dance music. Everybody who is anybody knows who Astrix is. To the masses (and when I say masses I mean the millions of dance music fans outside the psy-trance clique) Astrix defines the genre by presenting an accessible yet supremely well crafted version of the sound that never fails to ignite a dancefloor into absolute mayhem. Avi will be the first to tell you that his aim has always been to take his sound to as many fans as possible; “There is a limit to the change that you can reflect into pure psy-trance. In order to expand and excite more people you have to fuse other elements from other genres to keep it evolving and fresh. This is something I try to do in my own music by mixing in clubby elements and atmospheric soundscapes so that it will cross-over to other electronic scenes and bring in some new energy.”
by DmAc
A big fan of the eighties, and indeed he used to DJ 80s music, he still admires the uniqueness of the sound produced by the likes of Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, New Order, Eurythmics, etc. remarking that it’s still hard to accurately re-produce that certain flavour. Of Israel he expresses his wish for peace; “We have enough global worries and wars shouldn't be one of them!” He continues, “My personal wish would be that someday I will play in a ‘party for peace’ for all nations (including our so called ‘enemies’).” He does love Israel very much and remarks that it has one of the best club and night-life cultures in the world, which he says is why so many are exposed to it and start producing the music. He says for many in his home country, Israeli psy-trance is “not a fashion but a cultural way of life which is welcomed with open arms, and even in this present time this connection is still a vibrant network going all the way down to the roots of the global trance scene.” Life has become a non-stop worldtour over the past few years giving him very little time to complete his hugely anticipated third artist album, Red Means Distortion, and even less time for himself; “I spend almost all my time either locked away in my studio with my music or traveling around the world. Not much "off" days for me lately since I am working hard on delivering my new album soon.” Astrix literally plays every weekend in a different country or city across the globe, spreading his sound to the masses; an achievement he had always set out to do and wants to continue for as long as he can. After his new album is out he says he will be exploring new possibilities with live performance. “I want to evolve so that people will always look for the last word from the ‘Astrix chronicles’,” he remarks thoughtfully.

I
F you ask Avi about his new album, his influences... where he is taking his sound you get a confident and direct reply. He seems a man who knows what he wants and has quite obviously given a lot of thought to how he is going to get there. It’s no fluke he is ranked 18th on the world DJ Poll. He intends growing his fan base with each release ... “The new album is a showcase of this global experience as I tried to produce various kinds of tracks, going from the psy side to the more euphoric highs in search of new dance floor anthems, but without losing my trade mark groove and sound that my followers expect from me, as my plan is to try and please both my followers by trying to blend the main elements of both previous albums in the same productions. I strongly feel my fan base is increasing every year so I guess they are happy to stay with me on my journey into global trance music, and I’m sure they will feel the same once they hear the new album.” He explains things a little more, “I never considered myself only a psychedelic trance producer, but I did explore that style heavily while working on my first album Eye to Eye. On my second album Artcore I tried to take my sound into a more full on and uplifting mode, which proved very right for its time and helped me cross over to a bigger and more commercial kind of crowd and events. Now, in my new third album Red Means Distortion, my plan is to try and please both my followers by trying to blend the main elements of both these albums in the same productions.” The old clichéd question of where he likes to play the most
worldwide is met with the same thoughtful, and well prepared answer he has no doubt been asked a million times, although he does offer an interesting enough insight. “I like to play where ever there is a good party. The ‘how’ is much more important than the ‘where’ because a good party makes you feel like your head is in heaven and it doesn't really matter which country your feet are in. My fans are the core of my success and I consider them an essential factor in my career and my music … I am here for them and they are all over for me … Keep it real!” At time of press Avi had just undergone back surgery and was recovering at home. He has been forced to cancel some of his dates worldwide as he comes to terms with the impact of non-stop flying for the past few years. We wish him a speedy and healthy recovery and look forward to Red Means Distortion, his new highly anticipated third album with a release date now set for just before Christmas. As his SA distributor, Arik from 4Tune records says “Well now that he is resting hopefully he can add the final touches to his album. We are dying to get hold of it! It has been a long wait and we get constant enquiries from eager fans all over South Africa.” Footnote: As Avi was not able to attend to our interview personally due to his current operation. At the request of his label, HomMega, we used several up to date interviews as the source of all quotes and information. These include; Rave Magazine (India), In the Mix (Australia) and “Entrevista Astrix” from Brazil. Look out for his new album Red Means Distortion, out before the summer.

tones Throw haven't let me down as far as good characteristic music is concerned and it doesn't look like that'll be happening anytime soon. With some of the most original and widest music range comprising in one label I find it very hard to ignore anything coming out of their stable. Predominantly hip-hop, with funk, jazz, reggae and soul releases to boot, Stones Throw have set a precedent as far as quality music is concerned and manage to out do themselves on almost every release. The one label that doesn't make you shy from saying, I'm a hip hop DJ. With label owner / accomplished DJ / renowned producer, Peanut Butter Wolf personally approving every release on the basis of whether he likes it or not, he seems to have the winning touch and claims it'll be the end of Stones Throw when his formula doesn't work anymore. Being the home to such greats as Madlib, Mf Doom, Oh-No, Quasimoto, J-Rocc, Dudley Perkins, Georgia Anne Muldrow and the late Jay-Dee, how could one possibly go wrong? They clearly have some of the illest producers in the game and the recent introduction of Black Milk outta Detroit will in my mind prove to be even stronger. One of the dopest catalogues of music out there, Stones Throw have managed to carve their mark into a very competitive music industry without compromising their sound, quality or integrity. As Peanut Butter is a DJ himself, he has been very committed to releasing vinyl LPs as well as breakbeat records and one of the few labels keeping the 45 records alive and well. Having a distinct flavour throughout their releases and huge cross-over appeal, while still managing not to get monotonous makes them one of the strongest Indie labels out there. A purist's label that has the fans of good music lovers, contrasting to the marketing campaigns of trendy talentless pop stars! 2008 is no different to the other great years that Stones Throw has been offering us with fantastic new releases from Madlib and a Madvillainy Box Set including some new remixes of the classic album already being on my list of albums to cop. Now all that is left is to experience them at one of their brilliant live shows, nudge, nudge, any promoters out there? Check out http://www.stonesthrow.com for an interactive insight into their world, including high resolution pics, free podcasts and latest info.
Realist
I
f the name doesn’t give away their mission statement from the go then trust me it won’t be long till you fully understand where these kids are at. The anti-social, the anti-superficial the anti-anti, The Realist. Comprising of Sinister Dexter and Kid Clever on the rhymes and The Triplet of Bellville (TOB) making up the production, this recent Pioneer Unit Label team signing, plan to bring an uncomfortable truth that you don't want to hear. A fusion of glitch-hop and electronica laced with orchestral soundscapes over bass heavy backdrops, all tied together with hard-hitting lyrics and death metal-like vocals. They have been making a noise on the Cape Town scene recently and their signing to Pioneer Unit will only improve their marketing and accessibility. A dark out look of life is projected through the group's music and they have no intention of candy coating it to suit hidden agendas. They are here to push boundaries and judging by there enthusiasm and energy it's sure the Realist will most likely make their mark on the local scene as well as overseas, providing they don't scare the hell out of the market before that. Get touched and peep http://www.myspace.com/therealist for the carnival ride of sheer madness.

he dictionary defines classism in two ways: in general terms as pertaining to the highest order of excellence in arts. Implicit in the classical attitude is the notion of supreme distinction. When you look at the art of DJ’ing, for example, it’s about being part of a tradition that implies a relationship to things outside oneself. A true DJ neither glories in nor emphasizes his/her apartness from other people. A true DJ views the art of DJ'ing as an entity that exists in its own right, rather than an extension of his /her ego. Where others are inclined to view DJ’ing primarily as a means of self- expression, a true DJ expresses its powers as a means of communication. His/her attention is directed towards clarity of thought using music as a vehicle of expression and the splendour of the art.
DJ FRESH I
n a country where dance culture has become a way of life; DJ Fresh has been in the forefront of it. He has been one of the vanguards of house music; rocking dance floors in South Africa way before anyone thought it feasible to see it as a lucrative industry. He has 20 albums of house slamming beats under his belt. DJ fresh is who he is today owing purely to good old talent, skill, passion, hard work and some booty shaking house music. It doesn’t matter whether you are an acne-dodging high school youth or a suit wearing high roller in your fancy set of wheels, the truth of the matter is you have sweated buckets over a DJ Fresh house mix. The title Fresh House Flava 4 is held dearly by many, many people who, by this compilation, were introduced to the illuminating sound called house music. In fact the whole Fresh House Flava series of compilations arguably changed the landscape of house music consumption in South Africa. This is also substantiated by his more than triumphant career as a radio presenter. His notable nobility of character has been a burgeoning trait to all those he comes across socially and professionally. It’s evident in the way he seems to always leave smudges of excellence on other artists, especially DJs. It was through his Fresh’s Mad Half Hour, a guest DJ feature at YFM, that many a talent was unearthed. One thing that is true though is that DJ Fresh is a colossus of the house music movement in South Africa; and I am not only referring to his colossal frame but to his altitude of occupation! From being a club DJ, radio presenter, DJU member, Fundraiser for a variety of charity organizations, and most importantly, Founder of the DJ Fresh annual scholarship program, which awards tertiary scholarships to deserving students who cannot afford it – DJ Fresh has made a recognizable contribution to South African society. It’s truly a breath of fresh air (no pun intended) especially in a world dominated by self-centered materialism. Now as one of South Africa’s leading DJs Fresh has used his experience behind the decks to pick out a bunch of gorgeous electro house music gems to bring you his latest compilation titled Fresh Goes Electro. When used as a part of a word ‘electro’ means electricity – a generic definition that rings true in the house music circles. A classic house beat with elements of 80s electroharmonically rich analogue bass lines, abrasive high pitched leads and the occasional piano riff. With energetic movements of sound that characterise electro house, this is a compilation that is certainly electrifying. So far people are saying ‘YES’ to it, just like they have always said to almost anything that has a DJ Fresh imprint on it.

icture this scenario. On a night perfect for prowling, well groomed cats and kittens congregate in one of South Africa’s trendiest cities searching for heat. At 11:50pm behind a nondescript back-alley brick façade people are lining up to see South Africa’s premier club and radio DJ Roger Goode drop an underground delight of slick, sexy gems. In the early hours, deep crescendos of pulsating house will billow through arching walls as resident DJs feed the hungry crowd. As the dancefloor begins to submit itself to the infectious beats Roger arrives, a little before 1:00am. He grips the music segueing from funky to fierce; toying with the mixer threatening to blow the bass-bins as he playfully takes the EQ by the scruff whilst boosting and cutting cresting waves of progressive house music. For all this teasing he elicits cheers from the crowd as he breaks the voluminous sirens and bass-lines against the crowded bodies with tsunami force. You know… as much as you can render every possible scenario to describe DJ Roger Goode, you are always left with a question of: how do you actually describe someone whose sole existence is music? For a person with a career spanning from kicking a beat from within the womb to carving an extraordinary mark in the music industry it is quite a mammoth challenge. His capacity spans from dance music to almost classical composition! He produces tracks that would be just as at home on a melodic vocal album as trance re-mixes. His versatility predicts success. He is now carrying the dance portfolio at South Africa’s radio station 5FM, presenting and producing the most prominent dance shows over the weekend, The Saturday Surgery which he has broadcasted each year live to South Africa from Café Mambo in Ibiza as well. He has been heavily involved in the development and exposure of SA talent by having segments on his show that highlight local DJs and producers. He has also sat on panels for social development at the South African Dance Music Conference and as an ambassador proudly representing the industry in South Africa
roger goode to the world at the 2004 & 2005 Miami Winter Music Conference. ‘’I want to be instrumental, if not the pioneer, in establishing an international platform for the special music culture that has emerged from our social structure in South Africa, not only for local exhibit, but to educate the foreigners. They have something to learn from us,’’ he says. In an industry where consumer products are fated with abbreviated lives; their deaths accelerated by the magical appearances of newer and ostensibly better commodities; Roger Goode always relentlessly seeks to make himself relevant with the times. To celebrate his position in the higher echelons of the DJ spectrum, 2008 sees Roger Goode releasing a new compilation entitled Pandora’s Box. It’s a collection of sophisticated progressive house tunes. With gems from Jimpster, Carl Cox, Dave Seaman, to name a few, its sure to be filled with a groovy sense and littered with the main ingredients of madness and massive bouncing bass-lines tune after tune be sure to listen to them as they vibrate back and forth on your sound system leaving your ass shimmering uncontrollably. Africa has strong roots in terms of music and as far as house music is concerned we are not that far behind from the international standards. Roger Goode has definitely proven that. He has proven more than once that there is no magic formula by which you could accelerate yourself to become a house music connoisseur. There is no book by itself that can transform one into a sophisticated, knowledgeable house music DJ. Any book that makes such claim holds out false hope and makes promises that cannot be fulfilled. There is only one way to achieve what Roger Goode has achieved in his music career; it is to fully comprehend that the true meaning, the ultimate wisdom of DJ’ing is to be found in one place only: the sounds themselves. ‘’Ultimately, the mechanics of the dance floor revolve around just one thing: ‘Goode’ dance music.’’ ‘’It’s time to get back to basics; to stop watching the DJ and get back on the dance floor!’’ says Roger.

Young Blood
by Dave Mac
T
imecode coined the phrase for their compilation series – New Blood – I prefer to think of them as ‘young blood.’ It’s the ‘young blood’, the nu-skool, the next generation of psytrancers that we’re now experiencing folks. Out with the old and in with the new ... I can hear all the socalled “veteran trancers” still griping about the ‘good ‘ol days’... blah blah blah. Don’t bore me with that shit, buddy. Get a life or get with the nu-skool. It’s called evolution don’tcha know. Well here are some real nu-skool trancers for you – Cybernetix! And yes they like it large, and yes they like it hard, and yes they like it banging, dark, twisty ... tweeeeaky! This is the nuskool; born and bred on a staple diet of Timecode, who as a label, have had a most profound influence on SA psytrance producers. Duo, Warren and Tim may have only gone to their first party in 2003, but they’re no less passionate or any less knowledgeable about what it is they want to do to a dancefloor. Says Warren; “We both studied sound engineering and met up working a mundane retail job. Soon afterwards, we started writing tunes together, and began the slow process of building a studio!” Warren had spent several years DJ’ing hard-house whilst Tim spent a few years in the UK in to the progressive club scene. Warren says, “In 2003 when I went to my first party I was completely blown away by the power and presence of true psychedelia.” Tim adds, “On my return from the UK I realised that psy-trance is the ultimate listening experience and I decided on the spot at my first party to start producing it.” They say they are very happy with the crowd response to their
CYBERNETIX
live sets and are equally excited about their first track releases, which thus far include Quicksilver on Organik Records as well as a remix by Parana and a new track (Root Complex) on the impending release from Timecode’s, New Blood 2. Wanna know what they sound like? “Sci-fi atmospheres, grinding grooves, together with the aggressive synth lines and industrial percussion that gives us a unique feel,” they say. And best time to hear them at a party? “Anytime from midnight to twilight. Just not late afternoon, heh heh.” And there it is fellow trancies ... the Nu-skool have spoken. BIG Bomb = LARGE Bomb
O
ne knows to expect serious musical fun when a group takes its name from “some obscure TV-game on Super Nintendo.” These gents, the Logic Bomb spawned from said console sessions and an infectious sound imported from Goa, are Jonas Pettersson and Johan Krafft. Since the mid-90s, since weirdo’s took to dancing frenetically in forest clearings, these two have been enchanted by a psychedelic sound sweeping the globe. Jonas explains that their brand of musical fun grew out of “many years of experimental music-making and quite a lot of money spent on studio equipment.” This experimentation coalesced into the seminal debut album Headware in 2000 and launched the veritable Logic Bomb on unsuspecting psychedelic heads. Hailing from Sweden the pair say they welcomed the burgeoning success and the accompanying opportunity to globetrot. Taking their explosive act around the world since breaking onto the map, Logic Bomb have borne witness to the scene clambering from the bunkers of the underground to expose itself to the

mainstream. If the undulating crowd at this year’s Glade Festival in the UK is testament to their popularity, they certainly have little to worry about: 3000+ punters going malarkey to the slinky cuts from the Bomb’s latest offering Sonic Algebra is, by rights, elementary mathematics. The album, their third, was released last year and saw the duo harnessing network technology to “get a better flow to the writing process.”
logic Bomb
This meant that Jonas and Johan needn’t have been in the same room to create the music and, instead, internet filesharing enabled remote writing to occur. “After so many years working together, we kind of work as one person,” explains Jonas. Logic Bomb are busy boys – playing across Europe at the most esteemed festivals all summer and then hitting SA on 15 November. Jonas is excited about playing in South Africa for the second time, describing the country as being “really beautiful.” The Cape scene can look forward to a live set that fully incorporates what Jonas explains as “a new application that will allow us to sync the synths with the sequencers and use midi triggers to make the songs sound different to the original.” For the open-minded folk this far south of Sweden, Logic Bomb might be a refreshing reminder of the good 'ol days when psy-trance wasn’t just about predictable break-downs, build-ups and silly screeches. And in a neat twist, considering how their moniker came to be, they have a tune soon to be published on a new Nintendo Wii title. Circular logic, anyone?

Fatboy Slim, Deadmau5, Underworld,Booka Shade @ O2 Wireless FESTIVAL, HYDE PARK, LONDON
L
ondon's annual summer O2 festival offers three days of big name rock and electronic acts, performing each day to around 20 000 fans. It is an indication that a band is coming off a hugely successful year, or has well established itself over several years. This mix was evident in the electronic line-up over three stages in Hyde Park. Representing the veterans were MSTRKRFT and Fatboy Slim, with plenty of festival experience also carried by Booka Shade and Audio Bullys. For the up-andcoming, Robyn and Deadmau5 gave something new to the main stage crowd. Starting us off around 4pm the Audio Bullys, played to a packed Blue Tent at the back of the park. Our team was 10 members strong and we briefly considered forming a large scrum to get anywhere near the stage. We put our heads down and all somehow fought our way into the middle of the tent, almost being too close to the speaker rig as it turned out. This was due to the simple-yeteffective Audio Bully vibe: massive, massive bass and crowd interaction. A tight 45 minute set culminated in a 3 year flashback as Shot You Down made sure we wandered off on a high, with no-one really caring about the absence of the sweet vocals of Nancy Sinatra. These were half-
rapped, half shouted out by frontman NAME NAME, who pulled it off thanks to crowd support from about 5000 alreadydrunk Brits. Next up was the big attitude and even bigger stage performance of Sweden's Robyn, who in reality is not as commercial as her extensively played With Every Heartbeat implies. She pranced around the stage to the delight of pretty much every female in attendance and I think she would be awesome to see in a more intimate, club setting. I have to admit though, at that stage I was mostly focused and distracted on jostling for optimum Deadmau5 positioning. The Canadian had the ominous task as the curtain-raiser to the once best paid DJ in the world, Norman Cook aka Fatboy, and this would have meant pressure. Donning a royal blue suit and huge mouse head, the heat was instantly turned up with phat, rolling electroprogressive beats. To be honest, I didn't know if he would have the variety to keep it interesting throughout - but he somehow came up with tune after tune after tune. Deadmau5 banged out uncompromising, underground tracks that went down like that perfect ice-cold shooter that suddenly tells you you're drunk and enjoying it. In short, the support-acts had all done
their job, building the anticipation and allowing the late summer sun to finally set for the main part of the night. Boasting huge screens and a simple set-up of decks and a laptop, the sounds and scenes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's A World of Pure Imagination introduced the influential pioneer of the big beat genre. This was a brilliant move, as he followed this up with the 1997 classic Praise You. Having played many gigs where variety is required, I know how tough it can be to produce something for everybody while still being original. Fatboy pulled this off with ease, despite having one or two dubious mixing sections. He laid down quality techno such as Sven Webber's First Stroke, mash-up hip hop like Micky Slim's electro remix of Jump Around, and superb Indie rock from the likes of The Editors, all the while maintaining the perfect, danceinducing tempo and atmosphere. Visually, this was mixed up with phenomenal Vj’ing filled with bizarre sights and the occasional graphic or theme from Cook's extensive video catalogue. This kept the expectation of a potential Fatboy track at any time, with the crowd being rewarded with Right Here, Right Now and The Rockefeller Skank evenly placed across his set. One thing I always like to see is genuine enjoyment on the face of the artist, and this was very evident throughout. After all, why wouldn't it be? He's hugely respected, established and successful, and still knows how to pull out the big guns for the big occasion. A great show and another strong festival from O2.

y the sound of it, he's all too happy to follow up on last year's concerts, "That was my first time to visit and perform in Cape Town, so I was really excited. The audience had good vibes and I had a wonderful time!" He even took time out to check his support act, The Real Estate Agents – "[they were] real original, I liked them." Converted to DJ'ing by the HipHop film Wild Style in the early Eighties, Krush began releasing his signature beats, combining traditional Japanese elements with smoky Jazz and hip-hop edge, a decade later. One of the pioneers of Japanese turntablism, DJ Krush has since become a revered name in the upper echelons of American hip-hop, which has seen him working with the likes of Blackthought and ?uestlove from The Roots; Company Flow; Mos Def; Eminem and a host of other critically-acclaimed (aot. merely popular) rappers and MC's. his year’s theme for Earthdance is “Honouring the Earth;” hopefully a message that can be conveyed and relayed successfully to all those who attend. Outdoor music festivals are a fantastic form of therapy, away from the grind of the city, an opportunity to ontspan and feel the unity of your fellow brethren and sistren as you soak up the power of Mother Nature beneath a throbbing beat. To dance under the glorious African sky ... that overwhelming yet strangely comforting feeling of being part of something so much bigger than your own little world is truly priceless. 12 years on, in a world soaked in cynicism and greed, it’s truly remarkable that the Earthdance brand has stood the test of time and is still held in over 50 countries with over 300 such simultaneous events. By and large they are also held without the might of the corporate dollar to turn it into yet another PR vehicle for superstar bands and global brands. Earthdance is hosted by the ‘little people ...’ the independents, like-minded individuals who are giving something
back, no matter how big or small. Now you can do your bit too. Buy your ticket; heed to the cause, and above all honour the earth by being environmentally conscious. Create lift clubs, bring your own disposable rubbish bags, keep your ciggie butts of the ground and respect your surroundings. Smile, embrace ... dance! And come and have fun. Real joyous, uninhibited, grandiose fun! Cape Town’s Earthdance is probably one of the biggest in the world with last year’s attendances in the region of 5500 attendees. With his own variety of stylistic influences, and last year's OuMuPu 6 venturing into French material, we asked him what to expect from his next outing; he didn’t commit, "I can't say a lot about the next album at this point yet, but I hope y'all await it with open minds!" One of DJ Krush' biggest strengths is that instead of getting lost amidst the variety of music that he's absorbed, he has honed a highly individual, recognisable, and all-round in-demand style – as the list of eager collaborators on acclaimed works like Meiso and Zen attests. A veteran collaborator, he says of them; "I can't pick one. I have special thoughts to each artist I collaborated with." Another key element to his success is the discipline that manifests almost as restraint in his work: He collaborates, as opposed to just giving cameo guest-spots, and resists 'overplaying' in his music – focusing on the heart which is the beat, without applying layers and layers of cosmetic effects. DJ Krush's SA tour kicks off in Durbs on 23 September, followed by Joburg's Carfax on the 26th, and the Assembly in CT on the 27th. By Dave Mac

T
he world of music revolves around its artists. They are the shining stars and their creativity and ingenuity generates the industry’s main sources of income. The music business’ profitability depends upon the popularity of its performers. Therefore the success of work done in many sectors of this industry depends on the artistic strengths of its musicians, producers, DJ’s and bands or a combination of all four. The massive technological advances which have reshaped the music business during the past decades are still continuing. The new digital techniques and platforms coupled with new methods of ‘direct to consumer delivery’ have increased. This revolution in the music business has accelerated a number of opportunities to those who want to bring their individual skills to some sectors of the music business. The SAMC is well positioned in terms of discussions relating to market strategies, artist development, publishing and the media. The 2008 installment conference was no exception. Let me begin by saying that should anyone decide to embark on a project of putting together a gathering of this nature or any conference for that matter, preparation should be paramount. I’d imagine that foundational elements such as the analysis of the people that are anticipated to be present should definitely not be overlooked. This would determine how and in what manner the information that is to be presented is delivered to the audience. I say this because over the duration of the conference I did not get the impression that the people that were
requested to part with their ‘know-how’ (with some exceptions of course) on the music business in South Africa (and in general) all managed to do this successfully. So basically the challenge that exists in the music business – that, the creative output of music exists in an intangible form i.e. as intellectual property and at the same time being physically embodied as a tangible product such as an audio recording, marketing strategy, techniques to carve out your niche market for example was not dissected in an insightful manner. So for all intents and purposes I think it was averagely put together, a sentiment shared with many others that I talked to. The DAC (Department of Arts and Culture) has been an anchor sponsor for this event since its inception; do yourself a favour and Google the term ‘Cultural Industries Growth Strategy’ on the net under South African pages and you will find a document that outlines the DAC’s vision about the music industry. A question was raised on whether ‘major record companies’ support dance music. I say it’s not about whether they support dance music or not because, contrary to the thinking of most people, major record companies do not constitute the main element of the music industry, especially dance music. I think then you will realize that it’s not a major train wreck if you are not affiliated to one. However should you decide to approach one it will be wise to bear in mind that these days a major
record company is run like any other company. As far as the radio broadcasting medium in SA is concerned there have been some challenges when it comes to local dance content. There is a new phenomenon of regional polarization in terms of classification of local dance music; for example there is a so called ‘Durban house music’ and ‘Pretoria house music’ phenomenon. I would only recommend that you stay clear of this as an artist. You need to have an understanding of your own sound and from there create your niche market according to a particular style and sound that sets you apart from the rest. And lastly the ubiquitous debate about analogue versus digital. There were mixed opinions about this debate, however a recurring sentiment throughout has been that of personal preference. What I’ve observed about this subject is that when you talk to almost anyone in the music business you'll encounter a uniformly optimistic picture of the vinyl market. Ian Connelly, client relations manager of independent distributor alliance IODA says "I'm hearing from labels and distributors that vinyl is way up." So you make up your own mind. In summing up, most practitioners in the music business confirm that it is a very fickle and fast changing business. During the conference there was a multitude of issues that were discussed than what I have outlined here, however my parting shot is that computers cannot discover talent, can’t organize tours and they can’t sing on stage, so we are still going to need people to discover talent, producers to shape the recordings, the managers to organize the artists. So yes, the music business is changing, but do not let the idea that a changed music business means a diminished music business.

BEFORE YOU PRICK AN
ENGLISH ROSE...
S
O there I am; in the ladies bathroom of a small bar next door to Pacha - the supposedly massive super club of London and The White Isle (we’ll get back to this) having a little pee, as you do, when the banter of a gaggle of girls at the sink catches my ear. It’s nothing outside the usual; in their thick London accents they’re talking hair, handbags and dancing up a storm, but it’s once I’m standing outside the cubicle, waiting for my turn at the mirror, that I’m somewhat stunned to the spot. The five ladies are adorned in what can be described as a rainbow of colour that could make only Boy George break out into a DJ set; each one in a little satin frock with lashings of frill, bow and sequin that give me the same nauseous feeling I get when I’m being followed - I swear- by a women pushing a pram ridden child, screaming it’s head off, around the supermarket. (Insert random Pro-Contraceptive slogan here). My outfit, in brief; black mini, funky top and my ultimate in all night club survival; black Ugg boots, are suddenly looking very indistinct in comparison. I find myself wondering if it’s possible we’re going to the same place, or did I just miss the Carnivale Night memo? Now L-town, being one of the biggest economic monstrosities of a city on Planet Earth, is surprisingly feminine. Much of the
city has been delicately crafted (to encourage tourism demand) and gleaned (to satisfy tourism demand) to graceful perfection. Old buildings and ‘typical English’ houses are the brick and cement equivalent of Lace with their engraved curly wurlys and molded roses. Well, never mind that the inside of any given one looks like a dated IKEA store catalogue - a cheap Swedish story all on its own! And the same, to some extent, is to be said for the lasses that run the place amuck - possibly right down to their ‘IKEA filled’ internal fixtures as well but without the Swedish-ness. (Did I mention the random pro-contraceptive slogan here?). And we thought South Africa had a brain drain … Yes, the women of Britain are being flogged as English Roses to this day. This distinctly ‘English Country’ or ‘Posh Society Girl’ look being punted by High Street designers and ‘fashion gurus’ from shameful Cable TV shows are convincing the fashionable - questionable - female public that donning a shapeless old curtain and teaming it up with a Kate-Mossattitude, Cowboy boots and Aviators is ‘bang on trend’. And they’re getting away with this foul crime - all for the sake of selling England to the world as being the home of My Fair Lady. Personally, I’m good with holding onto a little bit of Joburg Girl Glam, thank you - as My Fair Ladies this lot is not!
English girls could very well be the thorns among the roses, in fact, when put on a global scale. Dainty dresses aside, they’re feisty and shoot from the mouth with words that would shock a Pikey, carry a pasty (if not ridiculously Oros tanned) pallor you cant help but fear (either way) and are prone to popping out illegitimate children to live a cushy-as-pins-and-needles life on The Dole. (Seriously, pro-contraceptive campaigners have invaded this space!) When it comes to going out on the town leaving their mums to babysit? - they dominate the dancefloors of their chosen musing and set the precedent for a whole new era of Girls Gone Wild. I’ve been given much opportunity to witness this fascinating lady species in action, as in my attempt to be adventurous, and much to the tumultuous delight of my roommates and fellow party bitches, I’ve poked a toe, with them in tow, onto the dance floors of several scenes this side of the pond, to see, without the sub-genre political jousting in my earballs, where my toes actually like to jam. As it turned out, the Loo Ladies and I did all head for the Cherry emblazoned doors after a few party starters at the local. Though famed for its legendary rosters of Thee. Worlds. Best. House. DJs. Like. Ever. (See, I told you I’d come back to it), one of my girls beat me to the Pacha punch when she yelled over the good, but yes ordinary sound system, average sized dancefloor and strangely shrined DJ box, “Is this it?”. (I even went back again a month or so later just to check and, no offence to the European tourists who feed its annual income; yes, that was it.) At the end of the night I spotted two of the Pouffy dressed party girls looking somewhat deflated. The one, dangling her teetering stilettos from her fingertips was navigating the other, hobbling behind looking like what another mate of mine would call ‘a very dizzy donkey indeed’, towards the exit. If these are English Roses, then God save The Queen! (Pro-contraceptive campaigners thank you for reading here.)

(ha ha). Basically my man, I found myself in house and that is what I have been doing since. How has life been since Time After Time with Kentphonik? Eish my man that was a complicated thing with those cats, but I don’t really want to get into it. We worked it out and everything has gone well since. That track really put me on the map and I haven’t looked back since. And life at Phezulu records? Hey my man life at Phezulu is really hectic we are all producers who really push each other to do better. At Phezulu you can’t be mediocre, you have to be at the top of your game all the time, because you are competing with cats like Duda, Mbuso and Claude.
by Sive Booi
I
caught up with superstar DJ Mono-T and we spoke house, kwaito, Phezulu and about his upcoming album release. Tell us a bit about yourself? Well Mono-T is a DJ/Producer who started doing his thing way back in high school. I used to be part of a kwaito band back in the late nineties with all the hype around TKzee and cats like Mandoza. I then realised the whole house thing when I was in Vaal Tech, playing at VUT FM. That’s where my talent really came to life.
What’s with the name Mono-T? I was actually named by a cat from Blackwhole called Mgrigo; the whole name comes from the musical term mono sound. So why the move from Kwaito to house? Well mfethu you know in the nineties kwaito was the thing, with cats like Mandoza, Tkzee and Chiskop. So ekasi we started a kwaito band but I soon found out it wasn’t me and I was bitten by the house bug. I couldn’t sing you know (ha ha), so with house I could make music, mix and I did not have to sing
So what have been the highlights in your career so far? Touring around the country, going to places like Botswana and Namibia. Playing with cats like Oskido, Mbuso and DJ Fresh. These are the things you really appreciate as a DJ. So what are your plans for 2008? Well I just want to rock this year my man. I’m releasing my new CD Mono Sound through EMI and Phezulu Records. I’m in the process of doing a national tour and rocking all area codes.
It's all about the music... DIGITAL MUSIC
I
’M chatting to Matthew Prehn and Matthew Loots about all things digital. These guys are responsible for running More Music’s digital label division. They get to deal with Beatport, Stompy, Djdownload and all the other Mp3 stores selling dance music online and worldwide. They also get to deal with many, many artists both locally and internationally on a daily basis. Originally the Matthews, also known as the house production duo Bang Bang, moved to Joburg to pursue their music aspirations in the big bad city of Gold and through some initial licensing deals with More Music got talking to Manuel Oettl about the digital side of the label. The result was both Matthews being appointed joint label managers for More Digital and happily they could move back to sleepy old Cape Town where nothing much happens but at least they had the mountain! Well not quite. A lot happens, especially if you have a secure internet connection, a massive love for dance music and the solid drive and determination these boys have to build More Digital into the well established label it has become. Matthew explains; “it's all about building relationships and developing respect with the overseas distributors, online sites and labels. It’s taken us some hard work but we now have a reputation for supplying quality music and as you develop this it becomes a little easier to get your music visible on online sites.” Matthew No. 2 adds (it’s a phone interview, don’t ask me which Matt is saying what ...); “The amazing thing with the internet and digital is the lines have been completely blurred so we’re no longer ‘SA producers’ trying to find international licensing as such. We are in fact as much an international label as
by Damien Albetto
the next.” (First) Matthew continues; “It works both ways too. We are able to sign and license overseas artists too, in fact we currently have about a 50/50 split between SA and international licences so we can now get SA tracks onto international compilations and vice versa. Through Manuel’s database and what we have added to this over the last year I can confidently say we have strong representation and can often times make more money for an artist than if he was signed overseas.” The Matthews have added their own imprint Southbound and Ryan Sullivan’s deep proggy imprint, Gut Feel to the More Digital label. REALITY: Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is a psychoactive ingredient present, to some extent, in all Cannabis plant varieties. However the content of THC in industrial hemp is naturally very low, too low to produce any intoxicating effect. Not only is it naturally low but the level can be manipulated and regulated. International legislation stipulates that the THC level be kept below 0.3%! Industrial hemp actually contains a relatively high percentage of another cannabinoid, CBD, which is an anti-psychoactive cannabinoid, blocking the high commonly associated with the smoking of marijuana (a distant cousin of the industrial hemp plant). So, while it doesn't make you high, hemp does provide an eco-friendly solution to many challenges we face such as job creation, housing and nutrition.

Libra
OCTOBER 2008 23 September - 22 October
The focus is on healing - not only the physical body but also relationships and emotional issues.
With Venus in Scorpio it is always advisable to take extra care of the things you don't want to lose.
ARIES | 21 Mar - 20 Apr | FIRE You will be feeling optimistic and more energetic than usual but there will be some hidden issues to deal with in your relationships. The good news is that this is a very conducive time to sort out uncomfortable issues.
ARIES | 21 Mar - 20 Apr | FIRE Anger expressed in random violence will ricochet into unwanted areas of distress and bitterness. It will also help to restrain yourself from speaking in anger until this has subsided. It is better to speak a kind word than to be the one that is forever criticizing others.
TAURUS | 21 Apr - 20 May | EARTH You will find it is better if you determine what your responsibilities are and focus on those and leave your partner to deal with what they consider their duties. Otherwise you can end up being a control freak. GEMINI | 21 May - 21 Jun | AIR This will not be your most comfortable phase and you may also have taken strain from the extra expenditure of energy and thus need to strike a balance. After all everything is about balance. CANCER | 20 Jun | 22 Jul | WATER Relationships are demanding and there are things you need to talk about. Realize that everyone has their own way of dealing with issues and releasing pent-up anger. Your way is suitable for yourself but not necessary what others need. LEO | 23 Jul - 22 Aug | FIRE Try to keep the scathing, sarcastic remarks to a minimum as you may feel smug at your own cleverness while your partner lay bleeding from the verbally inflicted wounds. VIRGO | 23 Aug - 22 Sept | EARTH Try to deal with things in a different way as you are familiar with the results of harsh critical remarks. Determine what results you actually want and find a way of communicating it rather than get someone's back up. LIBRA | 23 Sept - 22 Oct | AIR You can rather channel your energy into a creative effort and get things done than look for a sparring partner. Overindulgence is prone to inflict your liver so try to keep a cool head and your consumption at a moderate level. SCORPIO | 23 Oct - 21 Nov | WATER Although all the signs are there and your intuition is giving you the same message you will initially try to repeat and recreate old habit patterns that worked in the past but they are not going to work now. Try another approach. SAGITTARIUS | 22 Nov - 21 Dec | FIRE Although this is a wonderfully social time for you there is also your duties and responsibilities that are strongly underlying and there is a definite need to make those changes that are essential. CAPRICORN | 22 Dec - 19 Jan | EARTH Relationship issues are the cause of great tensions as this is the area of prime expansion. Blaming your partner/s for malfunctioning situations will not resolve the conflict. You have to live and direct your own life. AQUARIUS | 20 Jan - 18 Feb | AIR As deceptive anger issues come to the fore you're in a better position to clear old patterns by realizing it is a growth period. Look deep into yourself and be ruthlessly honest regarding your own personal feelings. PISCES | 19 Feb - 20 Mar | WATER From seeing with an overall and expanded view you enable yourself to understand things in the larger context, whereas only looking at a specific point can blind you to other's feelings and needs.
GOING
TAURUS | 21 Apr - 20 May | EARTH Address your obligations and liabilities in a better way and engage in finding solutions to relationship problems rather than find a scapegoat. Ultimately the onus is on you to create the sort of life and career that you wish for yourself. GEMINI | 21 May - 21 Jun | AIR You try to please everyone and consequently you remain in the same old groove and tend to blame others for things going wrong. You need to face your hidden fears, jealousies and anxieties and accept who and what you are. CANCER | 20 Jun | 22 Jul | WATER Apply yourself to the tasks at hand and take decisive action in situations that are not to your liking. It is your life and there are always those that you can please and those that you cannot. So please yourself. LEO | 23 Jul - 22 Aug | FIRE Jealousy is the result when you are lacking confidence and your selfesteem is low. The only true solution is not to measure yourself against others but look at your own unique self and enhance your positive aspects. VIRGO | 23 Aug - 22 Sept | EARTH Everything in life depends on one's own input and your own proliferation will rely on your ability to assimilate new information and change outmoded patterns of behavior. Everybody needs changes in life and that will give you a new impetus to move forward. LIBRA | 23 Sept - 22 Oct | AIR In your relationships you'll find it's a well-disposed time to address clandestine, hidden issues. Holding on to old gripes and disappointments become a heavy weight to carry and they never give you joy. SCORPIO | 23 Oct - 21 Nov | WATER Let go and use this time to take an honest hard look at outdated grievances and leave them in the past where they belong. This will enable you to go forward, feeling lighthearted and unburdened. SAGITTARIUS | 22 Nov - 21 Dec | FIRE Take a grip and avoid the inevitable blowups that can result from being overtaxed. Enjoy yourself but keep moderation in mind. You have to decide what your priorities and responsibilities are and act accordingly. CAPRICORN | 22 Dec - 19 Jan | EARTH Practice walking away from situations that you know through experience is going to cause the repeated patterns of discontent and quarrels. So when a few tasks become many, allow yourself to not feel inadequate. AQUARIUS | 20 Jan - 18 Feb | AIR A combustible, bombastic attitude is definitely not going to give you desired results. You'll need to understand the sometimes more emotional and sensitive feelings of those you are dealing with. PISCES | 19 Feb - 20 Mar | WATER From your viewpoint you are right but in the long run it is not about who is right and who is wrong but rather the inclusion of other's emotions and sensitivities. Everybody is different and acts differently.

& DJ TOP 10s TITLE: NOVA (ELEMENT MIX) ARTIST: CHRIS PEREZ PROJECT LABEL: COCO SOUL STYLE: HOUSE REVIEW: DJ K.SKILZ SA DJ MUSIC
Chris Perez, the creative force behind Blvd East, comes front and center with his first solo effort as The Chris Perez Project. The lush sounds and driving rhythms Chris has built up on during his time with Blvd East are still undeniably present yet the recordings take a decidedly deeper, more epic turn. The Chris Perez Project, with Singularity and Nova, takes you on a journey through the deepest house sounds of our time. Once again he doesn't disappoint and lives up to what has grown to expect from him. Singularity on side A is also a phat track but the flipside is where you will find Nova meaning 'new' in Latin. It also lives up to its name where fresh and new is concerned. Enjoy
TITLE: ALL OVER THE WORLD Charles Webster’s Furry Phreak’s hooks up with vocalist ARTIST: FURRY PHREAKS Terra Deva on a track signed by Defected last year. WITH TERRA DEVA There are too many mixes to describe but I’ll highlight a LABEL: DEFECTED few of them. Three Pastaboys efforts, two remixes; a STYLE: HOUSE REVIEW: DJ SYLVOZ – dub and an original club mix are really expressive and SA DJ MUSIC creative. They have that natural flow and they make you
go deeper leaving you with no choice but feeling good. Webster and Pastaboys remix is also thumping and the harmony and soul are amazing. It left me hanging and hoping that the track would play forever. Terra is indeed the in demand vocalist and I take a bow for saying that. The beauty of her vocal and lyrical content describes everything. Its indeed an undisputed respect she has all over the world.
TITLE: LOSIN' MY MIND (JON CUTLER'S INSTR.) ARTIST: JOVONN LABEL: COCO SOUL STYLE: HOUSE REVIEW: DJ K.SKILZ SA DJ MUSIC
Distant music's Jon Cutler delivers a devastating remix of Jovonn's Losin' My Mind for the next release on Coco Soul. Jon keeps things deep and heavy while still coming back to days of wild house vocals. Losin' my Mind was the b-side to Jovonn's genre defying Neptune released earlier this year on Coco Soul. Now here are the remixes. Both sides are great and you might want to surprise your friends with these versions as the original versions released earlier this year somehow found their way onto Y-FM and the rest is all history. Without calling it commercial, it is well known on the dance floors already and guaranteed to do the job now. The instrumental is my personal favorite as it disregards the great vocals and still manages to keep the floor going.

TITLE: SAMPLER EP 4 OF 4 ARTIST: DJ GREGORY LABEL: FAYA COMBO STYLE: HOUSE REVIEW: DJ SILVOS SA DJ MUSIC
Faya Combo Sessions is a triple-disc reflection of DJ Gregory's career. "The idea was to have this range of DJ Gregory flavored tracks, from disco to tribal to deeper, darker and tougher sounds; DJ Gregory's original mix is a punisher and it really makes you feel guilty for not dancing. There are remixes by Kerri Chandler & Karizma on this EP. Don't underestimate your value for dancing because the truth is you will look like you are lost from another world. You may be required to break your legs because you have 4 smashing tracks to spare your legs for. Likewise I think this tracks was made to unite the people who still have negative thought for not dancing. So get started, don't panic.
TITLE: CRAZY HIGH FT. CLAIR PHILLIPS ARTIST: DR MOODY LABEL: MORE MUSIC STYLE: ELECTRO HOUSE REVIEW BY: MIKEY @CHOICE RECORDS
Well we are what we are. The power of music is very special in the way you feel is the reason why it was made. Coco Soul has really opened up so that I can do a lot of reviews. We Are, is the reason I lifted my eyebrows to wear that smile on my face. The original mix is nice and mellowed for that stormy rain season but trust me winter can be warmer if you really listen to this kind of music. The only thing I can say is good work guys, you are really tight and they will agree and say 'we are' when they see this review. Lou2Chris Dub mix also has all the fun elements and expressions. So grab that beer and go dancing. Oh well you may even spend your last cent on this record because it's worth it. Adios friends lets praise the love of House music.

Sunplay Records from Florence brings you another release by the famed Italian producer, Fausto Messina. Without a doubt, sicker that your average. The core of this record has got to be the percussion arrangement which renders a fluent listening pleasure, also offering an appeal for jocks to turn it up. Fausto Messina out does himself in this piece by incorporating a blend of chill alongside a minimal influence, hardly unique but mobility on the dance floors remains inevitable. This definitely sounds like a record which will stick around for a bit, never mind it's slight commercial hint.
Renowned UK producer now residing in SA, Dr Moody has teamed up with SAMA award winning vocalist Claire Phillips to create a killer new track that has a lot of spunk. This song has a great vocal pitch with some old school sounds in contrast to the very new electro flavour which remains the backbone of the track. Dr Moody has always put together a good mix of sounds that never fails to pump and this once again is a perfect example. Look out for the original and remixes doing damage to dance floors in your area. Just what the doctor ordered.
It's rare these days that an EP can produce two quality dance floor rockers, while maintaining quality and integrity but also leaves you inspired by the message in the music. House Nation EP is a prime example of this combination. The 1st track Double Impulse delivers a groovy Chicago Beat with a gritty electro style bassline filtering in and out while layered sweeping synth pads glide on top. House Nation” strips it down and moves into slightly more tech house territory with a bouncing bassline and dubbed out cut up vocal snippets. This is the house nation anthem ready for serious play time on the dance floor. So dance, cause life is the music.

This record is an eclectic journey for those creatures of the night that enjoy the essence of house. It takes you back to the days when house was at its purest form. The mix-master blends elements of soul, funk and easy lounge grooves to make listening to this disc a lesson in music. He features tracks from the likes of Blaze, D'Angelo, Rosie Gains and Lumiere. The disk takes on an out-of-body experience with tracks like of Closer than Close from Rosie Gains, Goodbye Illusions from Lumiere featuring Big J and of course Webster himself with I'm Falling the Paris Bordeaux mix. This latest offering from the defected label is definitely for the purists but will take any lover of house on a mind-blowing outerworldly experience to places where the mind can only imagine. This piece of music is a collector's item for all the house heads all over the world.
TITLE: PASSAGE ARTIST: OSUNLADE LABEL: BBE MUSIC STYLE: HOUSE REVIEW: SIVE BOOI
If you have ever been at an Osunlade gig you would attest to the fact that every minute is a spiritual journey. With Passage, the latest in his collection of musical gems he takes the art to another level. With tracks like M.U.S.I.C from Atjazz and Big Theme from Boddhi Sadva 'The Eccentric One' proves yet again that house is a sanctuary and he knows how to make it come alive. This double-disc consists of a mix and an un-mixed CD to play at listening pleasure. He also manages to drop one of his unforgettable tracks My Reflection on which he features Divine Essence. Yoruba always manages to unearth something special on house-heads the world over with their unique and spiritually uplifting sound. This latest compilation is no different and it would be a loss to any connoisseur of house music not to have it. Let house music move you.
“The Great One” has raised the bar yet again to all those pretend-to-be DJ's out there. Glenzito's latest compilation is a lesson in the art of house, with touches of deep soul and edgy-techno beats. This is what house heads have been waiting for and it has finally arrived, courtesy of the global 'mix-master' himself. He features the likes of Rocco, Kiko Navarro, Arnold Jarvis and Sandy Rivera. Tracks to look out for are Michelle Amador's sensually seductive Because of You the Yoruba mix. Another super banging track is Motivacao featuring Christie Nelson If I had a dream the Nick Holder mix. This meticulous piece of genius is probably the album of the year without a doubt. The attention to detail and meticulous track selection puts it in a class of its own. The Great One has done it again for all those connoisseurs of beautiful sounds, long live house music!
TITLE: FRESH GOES ELECTRO ARTIST: V/A MIXED BY DJ FRESH LABEL: SOULCANDI STYLE: HOUSE REVIEW: SMALZ
Fresh Goes Electro, hhmmm … this is interesting. From a DJ who has impeccable taste in track selection for his compilations, I approached the listening to this album with keen interest to see how he interprets the electro form of house music. It's a good effort from a DJ that wants to keep himself relevant to an elusive market. I do however get the impression that it's a little disjointed with the sequencing of the tracks at times, though. Out of all his selections I have to say Faxing Berlin by Deadmau5 kind of hit the spot for me, but then I got thinking “is this not more of a minimal tech tune?” Hmmm. Is Fresh trying to tell us something? Interesting and different from a man not previously known for spinning electro. But is it electro? You decide...
This is for those who live for the night out and dread moments away from the dance-floor. This super-funky disco seduction from Kaskade is an electrifying compilation that reminds you of those all-out-raucous nights spent partying the night away and leaving your trail on the dance-floors and still waking up to tell the story. This record is slightly up-beat and is not for the occasional creature of the night. Kaskade's electrifying album features tracks like Back On You, Borrowed Dream and I'll Never Dream. This record is definitely for the purists and avid fans of Kaskade. If you don't appreciate the man's music then this one is definitely off the mark for you. Its up-beat disco funkadelic tunes that don't stop you till the early hours of the morning. With such pulsating basslines it's hard not to be blown away by Strobelite Seduction.

Other stupendous tracks are Baila Migente from the Abicah Soul Project and City Street Walking from Kemal featuring Foxxe. Whether you are a DJ, house head or just a lover of beautiful music this is definitely one for all collectors of house.

reminiscent of the London underground to the beaches in Miami to the party capital Ibiza of the coast of Spain. This disc features the Freemasons with When You Touch Me the Bart B More Vocal mix and the likes of Soulblunts with Billie Jean. This compilation is definitely not for everyone, it's for the hard-core clubbers who live for the night. Look out for gems like Horny United's Crazy Paris and Alex Roman's Save a Prayer the DJ Antoine versus Yoko remix. The beauty of this triple disc trilogy is the eclectic sounds that culminate in the ultimate clubbing experience for the night crawlers.
Listening to this album I must admit is like being drip-fed low end frequencies. The mixes creep into one's system so effortlessly. Borders between self and sonic become meaningless as Roger takes you from a deep soulful to uplifting house music journey. On the whole, it's a decent selection of house. Look out for the Julian Bendall's afternoon soul remix of Jarrier Modrow Rare Soul. It's truly a gem that whispers you into submission. He is coming through once again with a solid mix for the summer. You just can't go wrong with any of his Release Yourself mixes.
Having emerged from the French underground scene, the charismatic Afro-house DJ Gregory mixes up another of his back catalogue on his latest compilation for SoulCandi PIONEERS OF HOUSE. Sun-drenched, rolling tribal beats, deep, dark drums with a dash of African-inspired percussions makes this a scorching installment of house music. A doubledisc mixed and unmixed retrospective of DJ Gregory's career from disco, Caribbean inspired tracks flavoured with his inimitable tougher sound. A collection of cuts and remixes including Kerri Chandler's remix of And, Âme's remix of Elle and Yass's remix of Attend 1, contributing as new productions shows us that after years of banging out the hits, he's here to stay.

TITLE: WELCOME ARTIST: JAMES PANTS LABEL: STONESTHROW STYLE: HIP HOP REVIEW: RAIKO
TITLE: SMOKE SESSIONS ARTIST: DEVIN THE DUDE LABEL: BCD MUSIC GROUP STYLE: HIP HOP REVIEW: RAIKO
If you remember Bomb the Bass, chances are this, his first full-length in 14 years, might have you scratching your head some. Gone, in fact, is Tim Simenon's trademark bombing – the 'grafitti-ing' of a central bass line with various cut-up samples and licks that he introduced to dance way back. In fact, you'll do good to forget about dancing, except maybe laid-back EBM style... 'Future' is highly minimal in design – dark, slowly coiling electro atmospheres that couch the vocals. Pitched somewhere between more reflective Depeche Mode and Faultline's stylish Electro-gloom, 'Future' reveals the Simenon only hinted at before. Standout track (in more senses than one) is the smudgilly kinky Butterfingers, featuring Fujiya and Miyagi, while exScreaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan brings his deep rasp to the lamentive Black river. Future Chaos, if anything, shows the songwriter that's been growing in Bomb the Bass' silent years. I had never heard of this guy until I got the CD and listening to him made me wonder why I was reviewing it. This cat is on some other trip. Blend echoes of the late disco era with 80s soul, early sounding rap songs thrown over some slightly jazzy synthesizers combine this with out-there trippy vocals and a blaxploitation score and you get James Pants. The amazing thing is this guy plays all the instruments himself and does it rather well! Plus it’s got the thumbs up from Renowned Stones Throw Records owner Peanut Butter Wolf who signed him after first meeting him on his prom night back in 2001. Ridiculous synths, basslines and a total original blend influenced by some great genres assorted into one flavourful album along with good party joints and grooves makes Welcome stand out from the majority.
TITLE: SAME AS IT NEVER WAS ARTIST: THE HERBALISER LABEL: !K7 STYLE: HIP HOP/ FUNK REVIEW: MICKDOTCOM
TITLE: THEN WHAT HAPPENED? ARTIST: J-LIVE LABEL: BBE MUSIC STYLE: HIP HOP REVIEW: RAIKO
MUSIC REVIEWS
The Herbaliser's first outing for new home !K7 is a merry, stripped-down, head-hopping affair. For several years now The Herb have been re-arranging their beats for live instrumentation. With Same as it never was they've gone all the way, restructuring into a five-piece band with 22-year old newcomer Jessica Darling taking on lead vox. And, taking centre-stage on no less than five tracks, her nicely grainy vocal chords give founders Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry the perfect instrument to build some rollicking, souled-out funk around. In between this body of old-cool funk are some great MC-led tracks - most notably Street Karma, where long-standing collaborator Jean Grae soaks up the Blaxploitation noir to deliver its cautionary hip-hop narrative. Some nicely quirky instrumentals trickle between the vox-led songs, with Amores Bongo sounding like James Bond lost in some Tijuana-meetsSpaghetti-Western party. All-round good stuff! J-Live is back with his 5th solo effort, keeping to his trademark style: melodic production with that 90s flava feel crowned with his thoughtful lyrics and easy story telling. This time J shows another side to his usual happy go lucky vibe he's familiarized us with over the years, by displaying the harder times of his musical career as well as putting out his anger view's slightly more. He really remains one of the most consistent musicians in the so-called underground hip-hop scene and with tight production from DJ Nu-Mark (Jurassic park), DJ Spinna (on We Are! damn killing it on the drums!), Nicolay, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Evil Dee (Be No Slave), Oddisee (The Upgrade (Ft. Oddisee & Posdanous de la soul) and obviously Himself the album ties up nicely! An easy listen from start to finish that has some truly good quality music on it.
This album didn't do much for me musically, but after a blunt (it is called Smoke Sessions) I found myself being highly entertained by this rather comedic mixtape. Devin is real spaced out for an old dude! Reminiscent of an old Outkast album (even an Erykah Badu impersonator on Take Me Home) as far as flow and vibe goes only the overdose chronic weed version, sounds like they did it on a Sunday afternoon and had an album by the evening! It's pretty fun and if you looking for some deep context shit, you not gonna find it here. I had the joint Searching on repeat, with Devin singing 'bout his drug induced journey's, a mad funny and surprisingly catchy track. The rest is filled with typical west coast sense of humour, insinuating vulgarity and Devin complaining 'bout ladies not “giving it up”. A good CD for that drunken drive home…
TITLE: ESSENTIAL DUB ARTIST: VARIOUS ARTISTS LABEL: REACH OUT INTL. RECORDS STYLE: CRUCIAL DUB REVIEW: DAVE MAC
Yeh mon!!! Rub-a-dub stylee! Bring it mon!!! Iree yeh??? Essential dub heh? Well I've heard my fair share of dub over the years. If you gonna call your album Essential Dub and you ain't King Tubby, well then you'd better make sure you get it right mate! Okay to be fair ROIR have a 25 year history of releasing dub cuts so I skeem they got some credentials. What I like about Essential Dub is that it's a great mix of old skool dub and nuskool cuts with a lot of diversity. Bush Chemists give us dub like it was back inna days, Bill Laswell serves up his spaced out bass-heavy atmospheres, Dr Israel sounds like he's been listening to Massive Attack and Ras Michael & The Sons of Negus give us that Nyabinghi reggae vibe. Every track is a different take on crucial dub-styles and pretty essential I haveta say!
TITLE: CHOOSE MUSIC ARTIST: NICK VAN GELDER LABEL: BBE MUSIC STYLE: EASY LISTENING REVIEW: MICKDOTCOM
I was rather surprised to note that Nick Van Gelder was one of the original Jamiroquai members, drumming on both Emergency on Planet Earth and Return of the Space Cowboy. Re-listening to Choose Music, I vaguely noted a pale shimmer of Jamiroquai's brand of disco-funk, and some familiar-sounding licks. After about ten minutes of listening to Choose Music, I had to double-check that it was still playing. The middle-of-the-road combination of Smooth Jazz, romantic Soul-Pop vox, connect-the-dot Acid-Jazz licks, and general dated feel does not a notable record make. Pleasant enough, but for fans of Easy Listening and Acid-Jazz lite only.
TITLE: CAFE CUBANO ARTIST: VARIOUS ARTISTS LABEL: PUTUMAYO STYLE: WORLD MUSIC REVIEW: SEEKA
Trumpets, trombones ... that Cuban rhythm ... how can you say no? In their never-ending quest to bring you the widest range of music from the farthest corners of the musical globe, Putumayo present us with Cafe Cubano, a collection of real sidewalk cafe compositions that indeed makes me feel like getting really, really drunk at an out of the way little cafe complete with cobblestones and checkered table-clothed tables outside. It's a cosy little spot owned and run by the friendliest of Cuban families, all smiles, loving life, loving being hosts and they just love it when their patrons let loose and start dancing on the tables. Where is this cafe? God, I wish I knew ... 'cos this music just makes me wanna find Cafe Cubano and be there ... good food, good wine, good friends and beautiful authentic assshaking rhythms. I love it!
TITLE: ECHOES OF SUMMER ARTIST: NIGHTLIFE CONSPIRACY LABEL: INDEPENDENT EP STYLE: LOUNGE/ EASY LISTENING REVIEW: DAVE MAC
How does one review an independent EP release from a local act who is still establishing themselves? Does one simply review it like any album or does one attempt to give the artist feedback that may hopefully assume part of their growth as artists? A conundrum indeed... Well, I like Nightlife Conspiracy! Their sound has grown on me. At first listen I thought them a little too generic but admittedly after a few listens I've discovered there's some excellent layers to their sound. James (Kibby) is an adept guitarist, Lisa Bauer has a voice well suited to their jazzy/loungey smooth funk sound and the engineering and production is indeed of a high standard thanks to Paul Van Zyl, the 3rd member of this trio. In fact if anything they simply need to write stronger songs, catchier, cleverer and with a little more depth 'cos they've almost got it.
TITLE: CABARET ARTIST: VARIOUS ARTISTS LABEL: TRIBAL VISION STYLE: PROGRESSIVE/ ELECTRO HOUSE REVIEW: GRAVITY SOUTH
Tribal Vision brings us another V/A Comp with producers from around the world. Favourite track on the disc is definitely the Fiord remix of Vibrasphere - Wasteland. Only after being totally impressed by this track did I find out that Fiord = Antix (no wonder). The disc starts out strong but then lacks impact for most of the middle tracks, however it ends on a high note with track 9 - a Nipp remix of a Jaia track and 10 - a Dousk remix of a Brisker & Magitman track - both of which are outstanding and worth the price of the compilation alone. All in all a strong release with an open and minimal progressive sound - 4 of the 10 tracks making their way into my current playlist.

Dooflex just keeps pumping out one great release after another and the amazing studio album of Nitro (Gil Dagan) is no exception. The cover art of Rainforest Culture is beautiful, colourful and serene unlike the contents, which can only be described as gorgeous, vibrant dance floor blasters. These full on tunes flow effortlessly into one another with the gaps between the tracks being less than a second. Nitro captures the essence of morning trance and adds more bang for your buck, the bass lines are hard and the melodies arresting. There is nothing boring or stale about these ten tracks; the sound is fresh and very danceable. An album created for the outdoor psytrance enthusiast. Highly recommended.
TITLE: BACK TO EARTH ARTIST: EAT STATIC LABEL: INTERCHILL STYLE: PSYCHEDELIC MID-TEMPO REVIEW: INDIDGINUS
Back to Earth is a kaleidoscope of different styles & textures, and I love it. Eat Static’s musical ingenuity is without question – Arabian melodies, jazz, lounge, Latin samba, ambient, breaks, dub and a nice touch of eclecticism (remember the Flash Gordon movie of the late 70s? The Emperor Ming sound effect features in Holy Stone – you can’t get much more eclectic than that …) all get a look in on this album. Several of the tracks are collaborative efforts with the likes of Steve Everitt & Ed Wynne (of the Ozric Tentacles), and Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy (of System 7/Mirror System). In a time of music albums often devoid of stylistic variety, this is a breath of fresh air. In summary – this CD firmly places Merv Pepler on the map as a pioneer of psychedelic music. Respect.
With many successful releases behind their name, Magma is proud to present another compilation of full power uplifting trance. Carefully selected by Domateck, listeners can expect a track list of Israel's finest producers doing what they do best. Following the formula of nine pumping tunes and a chill out track to end off with, you should find at least some of it to your liking. These promising tunes are filled with warm and driving energy that will no doubt rock dance floors, but nothing new. Overall achieving a well executed end result stacked with tons of commercial appeal, but as a DJ tool I predict a short lifespan and it will probably soon be replaced by the next of its kind.
TITLE: DIZZY FACTORY ARTIST: FERBI BOYS LABEL: COMPACT STYLE: PSYTRANCE REVIEW: SEVENR
Dizzy Factory is the second studio album by the Ferbi Boys (Itai Spector & Aviram Saharai aka Sesto Sento). This is bouncy full on psytrance with a hard edge that brings new interest with each track. Don't be misled by the cheesy cover art, this music is hot and happening. Ten dance floor killers that will have you begging for more. The stunningly well-produced tracks just keep banging away and sound very fresh. You just can't stop yourself from turning up the volume to this top-notch party music with a gritty electro, full-on character. Guitar Heroes shows how the guitar should be incorporated into psytrance. A few of the tracks have a mysterious nature about them and can be best described as having a secret agent sound. Phat! Highly recommended.
From the few labels releasing quality progressive trance, Iono sure seems to have a lot up their sleeve, proving to be capable of releasing both quality and quantity. I've always been a fan, so the immaculate production comes as no surprise, but this is one of my favourites so far. The sexy cover has got the music to match. DJ Drenan threw together a spectacular combination of well established artists exploring the slightly faster side of progressive trance. It's fresh, funky and fat with touches of electro shining through here and there. Crisp sounds placed where it matters most. Each track is an absolute pleasure to listen to and I cannot wait to hear this played over a proper sound system this summer.
TITLE: VOICE OF REASON ARTIST: QUADRA LABEL: H2O STYLE: PSYTRANCE REVIEW: RIQARDO
This is the 4th studio album of Quadra (Ido Liran) but his first with H2O records. The label is based in Israel, run by Ari Linker (Alien Project), Ido Liran (Quadra) and Avi Algranati (Space Cat). Initially it sounds as if Quadra has moved on from the mature full on sound to a more commercial sounding psytrance aimed at the masses. The album starts with fast rapping that doesn't sound out of place and then transforms into a banging track. Then the third track brings back the mature sound but compared to his previous albums the tracks are more melodic and contain more vocals. The vocals are never a distraction, are placed perfectly and suit these tracks. Welcome to the big sunny world of Quadra with tunes that will have you nailed to the dance floor.
TITLE: BREAK ME TO PIECES The cover art of the debut album of Silent Hill (Eli Pinto & ARTIST: SILENT HILL Lior Kopeikin) looks like it belongs to a horror movie. TITLE: RETRODELIC VIBES 4 ARTIST: VARIOUS ARTISTS LABEL: AVATAR RECORDS STYLE: GOA TRANCE REVIEW: SEVENR
RV4 is a compilation of remastered tracks that takes one on a nostalgic trip into the not too distant past of psychedelic trance. Certain names may be unfamiliar to the newer fan, myself included, but the music is still relevant in the new millennium. Old skool still kicks arse and deserves a place on the modern dance floor as these tunes are all about the journey. The album contains a selection of tracks by Slinky Wizard, Spectral, Blue Planet Corporation (Pleiadians RMX), Total Eclipse, Endora, Hux Flux, S-Range and Sheyba. A very rare track; Tenskawa Tawa by Total was produced in 93 as a tribute to the Shawnee Indians and sounds the part with its Indian chanting. This release is filled with interesting and memorable material and is a great classic addition to any music collection.
due to their previous cheesy CD single release. Although the tracks on this album are very well produced we are initially hit with two really cheesy vocoder tracks, which is overused and abused. This release comes into its own from the third track, Dear Stone, where these guys show what top tunes they are really capable of. Top Gun, their 4th track has a stylish quality, which continues into the stunningly beautiful Silent Ghosts and subsequent tunes. Except for the first two tracks this album contains exceptional banging and polished music. TITLE: ARE U INSANE ARTIST: MIDITEC LABEL: MAGMA STYLE: PSYTRANCE REVIEW: SEVENR
Are U Insane is the second album by Miditec (Miki Bibas former ½ of Beat Hackers) with his first released in 2005. The album is filled with energetic full on tracks that will put a smile on your face and bounce in your step. The only below par track is Kali's Guitar as the guitar is more of a distraction or hindrance in the flow as it is not played very well. In contrast, the guitar sound in Rebirth is initially more harmonious and less in your face and then suddenly becomes menacing; a nice touch. After the disappointing guitar track the rest of the album sounds good and is bursting with enjoyable tunes. It seems like the emphasis has been placed on producing fun and banging tunes.

quirkiness you can see that Victor has woven together a well made album out of minimal components. In terms of genres – IDM, minimal techno, world & trip hop would be apt labels I think. He has achieved a distinctive sound reminiscent of the 12K label and he progresses the sound well throughout resulting in a hypnotic listening experience. I particularly enjoyed his use of Bulgarian folk song in elements of the CD (I’m always a sucker for all things ethno). To conclude – different, minimal, absorbing….

on Monsoon is a mate of mine. Let’s get that out the way right from the outset. Well, sometimes mate. It’s not like we go bowling together each week. I don’t even think we’ve ever got drunk together. Still he’s a mate. He’s a kindred soul (albeit a frikkin’ frustrating one at times)... one that I feel I share his love for music and indeed South African music. Jon has written a book. His first book. The first book. Nope not that ‘so-called’ first book but definitely the first book on South African music as we have known it over the past 20 odd years. Could I have written a book like this? No! I was there too. Going to endless gigs and following SA bands eagerly. But I’m not Jon Monsoon. Jon is a true rock-journo complete with jaundiced eye and understated cynicism – a fan, a lover of music; an appreciator of all things musical. The accompanying photos, stage passes and other images of memorabilia are truly fascinating as he takes us through his musical ride from past to present. The book is laid out in a semi-magazine type format, which makes for easy and fun reading, each chapter capturing the essence of the band or event as he remembers it. I am more partial to books in the traditional fashion of pages of text, then a couple of pages of pics and then the next chapter as this allows a bit more for the imagination. With each page sprinkled with photos, it comes across more as “reporter style” than story telling. I found myself not actually reading it cover to cover but rather picking the book up and reading sections randomly like one would a magazine. This is more an observation than a criticism though, and in today’s world of short attention spans there may indeed be method in his madness.

The most profound realisation I had after viewing this DVD was the vagueness with which news of his death was met by me at the time. Why did I not know more about this remarkable hip-hop artist? Why did the world not know more? Writer and filmmaker, John Fredericks had an obvious
