n today’s day and age, businesses remain the bloodline that supports the economy. Sarawak’s booming business landscape rides on its many blessings: abundant natural resources, growing population, a strong workforce and a good economy. Many industries here are within its development stages with much potential yet to be tapped. Opportunities for growth comes in the form of expanding market share or

widening geographical scopes which is no easy feat in a terraneous land such as ours. Despite that, local businesses find their way to overcome said hurdles and continue to thrive. Sarawak's economy reflects this trend, growing substantially in the past five decades with real gross domestic product (GDP) soaring 110 times from RM527 million in 1963 to RM58 billion in 2013. The state’s continuous expansion connects major

growth nodes such as Kuching, Bintulu and Miri while bringing out the best Sarawakian corporations have to offer. Residential properties, for example, are an evergreen component in Sarawak’s scene. Not only are homes a place to stay and live our lives, many investors choose to play the property game, generating income from rental and resale. An interesting trend to note is the boom in condominiums and high-rise living in the

state. This captures the wants and needs of the urban generation of property buyers who yearn for heightened security and a relaxing lifestyle. Several property players here are offering said condominium projects in key growth areas such as Batu Kawa and Petra Jaya vicinities. One cannot talk about properties without also considering construction and building materials. In this respect, home furnishings and

decor also play a crucial part in keeping businesses lifeflow on the go, capturing the everchanging wants and needs of Sarawakian taste. The food and beverage industry is another with intensifying competition. In this respect, some businesses have even tapped into Sarawak’s very own offerings such as the Sarawak laksa paste to innovate its offerings. This is a clear example of our own homegrown innovativeness and creativeness.

Ecopile an environmentally friendly alternative to bakau By Sharon Kong sharonkong@theborneopost.com

K

UCHING: Ecopile Engineering Sdn Bhd (Ecopile Engineering) has invented a special concrete pile named Ecopile, a relatively cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative to bakau piles. Ecopile Engineering has claimed that Ecopile will give the construction industry a more environmentally friendly product thus, contributing to a sustainable development for the country’s high paced construction industry. According to Ecopile Engineering, replacing bakau with Ecopile can result in minimising the cutting of bakau trees for use in the construction industry which means contributing positively to the conservation of the mangrove forest. David Tay, inventor of Ecopile and managing partner of Ecopile Engineering, highlighted that due to the increase in construction activities, the demand of bakau has exceeded the supply and this has led to a shortage in bakau piles for the past several years. He further explained that bakau trees are taken from the mangrove forest which actually protects the coastal eco-systems and soil erosion from sea waves and thus preservation of the forests are necessary as remedial works had incurred even higher cost. For this reason, the government banned the use of

special supplement

bakau in all government projects but the private sector are still allowed to use bakau since there are no other relatively economical alternative. “But with Ecopile appearing on the scene, our objective is also to persuade the government to do away with bakau as a piling material since we are able to prove that a viable alternative is now available,” Tay emphasised. Tay explained that research and development work took over one year and has gone through a series of bending resistance and dynamic load tests. Ecopile was SIRIM approved in September last year. Ecopile is also patent protected against unauthorized copying under the Malaysia intellectual property act for 20 years starting from the year April 2011 and has also won the ITE Gold Medal in February this year at the Kuala Lumpur International Technology Exhibition. Designed as a friction pile, Ecopile is four to six times higher

in loading capacity than that of each bakau presently available, which means you don’t have to pile so many numbers and therefore labour cost is saved resulting in comparatively similar cost but quality is much better. In fact Tay is so confident of the structural integrity of Ecopile that he guaranteed to replace any Ecopile that is broken during piling with a new one with the next order.

Recently we have added another feature to it and that is to enable it to be extended and piled down to firm strata and therefore can be used as an end-bearing pile too. No equipment is needed to join the extension and also no significant cost is added to it. “Engineers and developers don’t even have to worry whether the sub-soil condition is dry or wet as Ecopile can be applied in both unlike bakau which are not suitable for use in dry sub-soil as it will rot after a few years.” Ecopile can also be left in the open for many years as they are not affected by weather conditions unlike bakau which will become dry and brittle if exposed to dry weather for quite some time and will cause it to easily break. Tay further highlighted that there is a steady supply of Ecopile in contrast to bakau piles which quite often experiences delay in delivery and interfering with construction schedule.

Wachong Glass offers safety, aesthetics for the modern home By Jonathan Wong jonathanwong@theborneopost.com

K

UCHING: As the taste for the finer things in life starts to grow in the local community, Wachong Glass Sdn Bhd (Wachong Glass) tasks itself to tap into this market by offering a practical yet appealing laminated glass. Jasline Chen, sales manager of Wachong Glass said Wachong currently emphasises on the value of laminated glass and the company’s folding doors as well as window frames. She explained that laminated glass, unlike tempered glass offers higher durability and enhanced safety. “Laminated glass is layered like a sandwich – It is a layer of plastic between two sheets of glass so when it breaks, the glass remains adhered to the plastic making it much safer compared to tempered glass which would shatter upon impact. “This lamination proves to be an excellent option when it comes to break-ins. “The strength of the glass makes it difficult to break as the glass anneals together rather than shatters, giving family members and the neighbors fair warning of a potential break in.” “Even when trying to cut laminated glass, it needs to be cut from both sides,” she added. Another highlight of the

product is that due to its strength and durability, it could be cut into large sizes without fear of putting too much stress on the glass itself. Chen stressed that the glass could easily be cut in 10 to 12 feet in length without fear of the glass bending or potentially breaking. While the glass may be strong, the frame that holds it together needs to be as strong as the glass that it is holding. “If the frame is weak, it could be the chink in the chain for thieves to break in hence the company’s’ choice of frames are not only make to look sleek, but also provide an additional safety measure. “Our frames have hidden hinges. “What this means is that it would provide the illusion of the window being a fixed window and the fact that there are no screws visible means it would be extremely difficult for robbers to try and break in. “The products that we are offering are rather difficult to find in places such as Kuala Lumpur but over here, we are fabricating it ourselves so we could custom make orders for all our customers. “The hinges and rollers for the door and windows are heavy duty and unlike traditional sliding and folding doors/ windows, could be opened with ease.”

UCHING: Hong Seng Construction (EM) Sdn Bhd (Hong Seng), an established housing development company in Kuching, has gone for a ‘value for money’ and ‘green’ approach with projects Vision Land 3 and Golden Palm. Steve Tan, director of Hong Seng, highlighted that with Vision Land 3, is ‘value for money’ because it is bigger than other standard houses. In addition, the design is on average of a bigger size, in terms of the height and width of the house. “We try to minimise unnecessary wastage and we emphasise more on utilising the space. So, most of the layout is square,” Tan explained, adding that there is in fact more than enough space available for use by tenants, especially those low to middle income customers. Strategically located about 1.2 kilometres (km) from the new traffic light at the junction of Jalan Batu Kawah - Bau and Jalan Batu Kawah - Matang, he highlighted that as it is a short distance to travel by car, tenants can easily access the nearby lifestyle shopping center, hypermarket, fast food restaurants, cafes, clinics, banks, schools and many more.

E7

Hong Seng goes for green approach with Golden Palm, Vision Land 3 In addition, he explained that the land itself is on high ground, thus tenants will not have to deal with any flooding problems. As with the proven success of the previous two phases of Vision Land, Vision Land 3 currently has very limited units available. Only four units available for the one and a half storey semidetached houses, which is priced from RM410,000 while for the double storey terrace house, there are nine units left, priced from RM348,000. Not only is Vision Land 3 categorised as ‘value for money’, the other main selling point is its location. He further pointed out that further down, there is an upcoming MJC Emart, in addition to the fact that there are a few schools around that area. Focusing on the one and a half storey semi-detached houses, he pointed out that the floor area is extra large which makes it ‘value for money’. In regards to Golden Palm at

12th mile, Tan explained that as part of the company’s effort to support a greener tomorrow, this project is a new attempt for the company to adopt the ‘green’ concept in its affordable middle income house category. Strategically located off main road of Kuching Serian road opposite the JPJ headquarters at 12th mile and away from the noise of the traffic on main road,

Golden Palm is surrounded by serene greenery on flood-free high ground. “The design concept of Golden Palm utilises complex calculation combined with quality window system to enable natural cross ventilation. “This enables home owners to save on electricity bills in the long run and at the same time contribute to Mother Nature by reducing the carbon footprint,” he enthused. The surrounding greenery regulates the overall air quality around the vicinity to be fresher and cooler during hot days. Tan further added that during rainy days, with the

temperature of the surroundings having cooled down, it hence enables home owners of Golden Palm to enjoy the ‘natural airconditioning’ powered by nature. Aside from the cooling environment, everyday necessities are also within easy reach from Golden

Palm. These include hypermarkets such as Kedai 1 Malaysia, Giant hypermarkets, banks, schools, universities, all of which are within a short driving distance from Golden Palm. Starting prices for the double storey terrace houses are RM398,000 onwards, while for the double storey semi-detached houses, they are priced from RM515,000. Those interested can contact Hong Seng at 082-238902 or 016-8891880 from Monday to Friday, from 8am to 4.45pm and Saturday, from 8am to 12.30pm. Oxy Trading introduces Korean alkaline water filtration system By Jonathan Wong jonathanwong@theborneopost.com

K

UCHING: Water dealer Oxy Trading Sdn Bhd (Oxy Trading) is offering a new made-in-Korea alkaline water filtration system with the most affordable price tag around. According to manager Micheal Jong, unlike conventional tap water, alkaline water helps detoxify the body by aiding the removal of normal acidic waste products accumulated from food, environment, unnatural by products and ‘normal’ process of

aging. Jong stated, “Alkaline water also acts as an antioxidant as it scavenges and neutralises harmful free radicals. This is because it is able to give up electrons which could neutralize and block free radicals from damaging your body. “People who are heavy meat eaters should consider alkaline water as it also helps alkalise the body’s pH which tends to be more acidic. Reason for this includes the high meat diet, high acid diet, high stress levels and exposure to toxins such as car fumes.” The ‘Classic’ brand filtration

system is a new product said Jong noting that while other filters in the market could range in the high thousands, for a promotional period ending June, the company is offering the alkaline water filter for RM888 from the RM1200 original price. Jong noted this would include delivery and installation of the filter and as an added bonus, Jong said the company was also offering a free ‘candle filter’ as a free gift. Goodrich Global offers touch of class with luxury furniture

K

UCHING: Goodrich Global offers the best of the best in fashionable furniture to Kuching socialites. Its latest line of designer collection includes a brand name that’s no stranger to us - Roberto Cavalli, a renowned Italian fashion designer. Roberto Cavalli is synonymous with fashion, luxury and glamour. He has produced a unique style of wallcoverings which he has long since applied in the interiors of his houses, yachts, boutiques and clubs. In keeping with the philosophy and the DNA of the brand that has always combined the concept of fashion and design with glamour and sensuality, Roberto Cavalli Home is inspired by the iconic prints and patterns of the most significant collections from animal print to damask, the colors and textures overlapping. Great care and attention is devoted to the choice of materials and fabrics, the matching of pieces and processing. Among some of his iconic and luxurious design include

iconic prints like stripes and monochromic checks which can never go wrong on any wall. Consider different sizes when going for stripes and checks and add a new edge to these classic prints. Adding a dash of glamour to these yesteryear prints can recreate magic in your living spaces. Animal prints can bring about boldness and a sense of daring to your living space. Step away from the restrictive stereotype that animal prints can only be used for a feature wall. Go ahead and decorate your entire living space with animal print wallcoverings but just bear in mind to be consistent with the type of animal print and the colour palette that you choose. Animal prints epitomize class, sophistication and opulence. The power house of all patterns - damask, has an old school charm about it. Contrary to popular belief, damask patterns are versatile in the ways that they can be used. Start by studying the elements of the wall. Do the walls lines in the room form a rectangle, square

or any other shape? Damasks fit every type of wall. “When I create a dress I want it to emphasize the femininity of a woman at all times; and so as with designing for the home, I try to identify the character of the people I’m designing for, thinking how I can diffuse this with the colours, the warmth and joy of living that first of all one gives oneself,” Roberto Cavalli said. “My Home Collection was born from a personal desire to share the optimism of my fashion with those who love mederived from my creativity, my philosophy, and my style which is also evident in the decoration of the home ... there is no difference between the thinking behind designing a clothing line and a home ware line. My lifestyle is always hugely driven by passion.” Now you can be a proud owner of a designer piece from Roberto Cavalli. UCHING: Automotive specialist United Asia Motor never settles for anything less than the best for its clients. “Most of the customers who have visited our workshop for car services and repairs come back for their regular maintenance and check-ups,” notes United Asia Motor managing director Adrian Yap told The Borneo Post. “As customer’s feedback is the most convincing words of mouth for a business to grow, we aim to deliver the trust given by our customers by going the extra mile in advising clients on the appropriate car care and solutions for their car problems.” Yap noted that sometimes it is not about sending a car to a car workshop and get it fixed while observing customers nowadays are more demanding and they want to understand more about what’s exactly happening to their car or vehicle when there is a problem arises. Hence, he pointed out that a few experienced mechanics at his workshop will provide the necessary suggestion to customers while the company also provides training to the staff by sending them overseas to further gain knowledge and technical skills in particular on fixing imported cars. Meanwhile, some of the services offered by United Asia Motor include car wash, polishing, waxing, spraying, coating, welding, and so on. He said there are different packages being offered by the company and customers can choose their car services based on their preferences.

For car polishing, Yap said the company is using a renowned brand called GM-Tech, a German technology which can remove sanding marks, scratches, stains and so on depending on the conditions of the car. Apart from that, the company also provides installation services for a Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking system for vehicles. Known as Debezt GPS Tracking System, it can be installed in most of the vehicle and is also suitable for fleet vehicle management and staff logistic management by certain companies. Yap said the system is very reliable as it is able to track the movement of vehicles and its location in real time through a subsription service. “The system can track the location of a vehicle where it is moving. In the case that if a vehicle is stolen, the GPS system will remain active and vehicle owners can track the movement of their vehicle to their last location. “If the vehicle is transferred out of the border of the country,

the signal from the GPS system will still remain active within 200 miles out of the border,” he said. He said customers can track their vehicles using their mobile phones through short message service (SMS) as well as camera installed on computers. For the GPS system, Yap noted that certain transportation and logistics companies have engaged them to install the device in order for the company or the employer to monitor the workflow of their workers for example, whether a bus driver adhere to the speed limit or over speeding and delivery staff who is working or not. Essential Advisory to strengthen English usage among flight attendants

K

UCHING: Essential Advisory Company’s (Essential Advisory) has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NIIT College in a bid to strengthen the use of English among students of its flight attendant course. Essential Advisory, a leading airline training and placement centre in Southeast Asia, highlighted that English is the prime language used in the aviation industry either to communicate with the public or during the daily operation tasks. Anson Voon, founder and trainer of Essential Advisory believes that English is an international language which air stewards and stewardesses must master whether they are tasked with working on the local or international routes. “It is essential for air stewards and stewardesses to know and fluently speak in English with confidence, especially when they are involved in international routes. “For example, in European, Middle Eastern and also Asian countries, they communicate by using high standard and fluent English,” Voon emphasised. Voon believes the collaboration

will not only gain knowledge from the class, but also have the confidence to speak the language without any limitations. Currently, NIIT College is offering four English certificates for air stewards and stewardesses under the School of English Language. The first is the English Proficiency Certificate which covers Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and Advance levels. Other certificates include the English Preparatory Certificate (ISESOL), English for Academic Purposes and English corporate training programme. The last programme offers three short courses, covering Telephone Skills, Incident Report Writing and English for Written Communication. Overall, the addition of English courses will likely further enhance the employability of Essential Advisory’s graduates in either the local or international airlines industry. The training centre guarantees a 90 to 95 per cent success rate with its Flight Attendant Preparatory Course’s graduate students in finding employment in the airline industry. This is not surprising, given that Essential Advisory’s teaching instruc-

tors such as Voon himself are professional and experienced people in the related fields. Aside from an introduction to the airline industry, the course also covers job interviews, teaching students on how to conjure excellent first impressions, proper dress codes, the application process and about the expectations during interviews and meetings. For the duration of the course, students will be able to build their character and image and at the same time, improve their skills in customer communication. In addition to being taught about maintaining a professional image and personal etiquette, students will learn about first aid and safety which also covers swimming classes. Interested applicants can attend Essential Advisory’s New Intake Open Day on Friday, May 5, from 10am to 2pm at its Kuching operation office located at No DD204, 1st Floor, MJC Batu Kawa New Township, Jalan Batu Kawa. It will also be holding an open day on Saturday, May 31, from 10am to 2pm at Kingwood Hotel, Sibu. For further enquiries, contact 082462115 or visit the company website at www.essentialmalaysia.com.

culinary skills by those that input these recipes for us. “Most people assume that since they all use the same paste, they would taste the same. “It could not be further from the truth as different ingredients like meat, would bring out different aromas from the spices. It is similar to like cooking chicken and beef the same way, it could be prepared with

the same style but the taste would be completely different,” Chong enthused. He explained that the recipes were a collaboration from the company’s production managers, the director’s spouses as well as a myriad of hotel chefs (Riverside Majestic, Grand Margherita, Grand Continental, Harbourview, and 56 Hotel). “The main aim for us to promote

this cookbook is to show the versatility of Sarawak’s Laksa paste. We are working very closely with the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) to help facilitate in boosting the state’s tourism sector. “Most people when you talk about tourism usually focuses on places to go forgetting another aspect of tourism is also the local food, so we want to showcase something uniquely Sarawakian per se.” The cookbook is exclusively available in certain areas such as hotels and Sarakraf Pavilion.
