Messages Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Indeed Education is the key to building a brighter future for citizens of our country through attaining skills, knowledge, resources and support. Sarawak under the capable leadership of the Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg is committed to continually improving delivery methods of education and learning processes from early childhood to secondary, tertiary and adult learning. Through smart partnerships with those in the education industry, we adopt and adapt proven approaches to develop programmes to meet the needs of all our learners that will see them meeting the industries’ needs. As Minister holding the Watching Brief for Education in Sarawak, I would like to see everyone gaining access to education right from Early Childhood to as high as they can attain. It is the path that will lead the next generation to a future of hope and prosperity. We are the architects of our own destiny. Getting the right tools and learning or skills will make shaping our future much easier. To do so we must have the right information. This is where we encourage students and parents alike to visit Borneo Post International Education Fair 2017 where counselors, educationists and institution representatives are there to assist you plan your education path. Working adults may also take this opportunity to chart their career path by looking at institutions or skills training providers for their skills certification. We commend Borneo Post’s initiative on organising this event which complements the Government’s efforts in developing the

Matching the needs of our State and country in the 21st century starts with the education of our people. The Sarawak Education Department has been in the forefront of providing the foundations of education to the younger generation of our community. Our role has been and will continue to be providing them with a solid base to make them qualified for higher education. It is this foundation that prepares them to face the challenges of a competitive world by character-molding them into resilient, disciplined and competitive individuals. We, the educators, have a great opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of our students, their families and the community they live in. It is our fervent hope that the younger generation, upon completion of their pursuit for education, would contribute to nation-building by sharing their knowledge, skills and expertise that they have received through our education system and the institutions of higher learning. The ability and willingness to give back to society is what everyone should undertake while on their worldly endeavours. The State Education Department takes pride in supporting the various community CSR efforts such as the Borneo Post International Education Fair, in the provision of education opportunities by bringing in education institutions representatives to enlighten students and their families. The interest generated by this event will provide students with exposure as well as a range of choices and options to pursue their tertiary

human resource needs as well as raising the quality of human life in the State. As patron, it is my pleasure to welcome all exhibitors and visitors to the eighth edition of the two-day Borneo Post International Education Fair 2017 at Vivacity Megamall, Kuching.

RAKAYAH BINTI HAJI MADON

Director of Sarawak Education Department education or vocational and skills training. We commend Borneo Post for having organised this premier event over the years and take this opportunity to wish the students all the best in making their choice that will lead them to a better future. ‘Fly Kenyalang Fly, Fly High’

Many students arrive at a major academic crossroad around this time every year with the release of the results of two important public examinations –the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) and the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). Those who have successfully attained their certificates will find themselves asking these pertinent questions: What do I do now? Should I take this or that course? Which one is suitable for me? Some students may already have a clear picture of what they want to do; others may still be confused while most parents worry if their children will get the opportunity to do the courses of their own volition. This is where the Borneo Post International Education Fair (BPIEF) comes in with the role to assemble representatives of universities, colleges, higher learning institutions and training centres under one roof with a common facilitative object – to enlighten students (and their parents) on the availability of suitable courses that will help to determine their career paths and shape their future. Correct information is the key to saving time and maximising resources which would otherwise be unavailing, especially if the wrong course were chosen. The inevitable consequence of such a misstep is an employment cul de sac after graduation, and must, therefore, be avoided. Education is, first and foremost, a very important investment families make to give their children a better tomorrow. This resonates with the government’s aspiration to provide quality education and training programmes to develop and augment our intellectual capital for the good of the state and nation. Indisputably, citizens who are educated and skilled, will be able to lead productive lives and contribute to the country’s growth. The Borneo Post has been around for some 39 years, informing the local population with a wide coverage of news. For the operation to have spanned nearly four decades – and to still be up and running today – we owe our loyal

Education is the cornerstone to a better future and our role, albeit a small one, as the organiser of Borneo Post International Education Fair (BPIEF); an annual CSR event of Borneo Post, brings under one roof some of Malaysia’s reputable institutions from academics, Vocational & Technical schools including adult education providers from around the country and representatives from overseas institutions. We, as responsible corporate citizens, must make it part of our social responsibility to our countrymen to have access to quality and relevant education. This is our small contribution to our readers who put us where we are today as the largest circulated English newspaper and preferred local news portal in Borneo. We, the people are fortunate the Sarawak Government is committed in providing education for all and we can see this through the various activities, programmes and setting up of training centres that are on-going. We have a committed State Education Department towards realising the country’s aspiration to see an educated and skilled workforce that will see us through the 21st century. We are grateful to our patron YB Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah, Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing, who also holds the Watching Brief for Education in Sarawak, for her dedication, commitment and strong support for BPIEF over the years. We also thank the State Education Department for supporting and endorsing BPIEF 2017.

Dr Elexson Nillian

First Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) graduate from the Sebob community

TOPIC: DARE TO CHANGE

(Adaptation and Transformation from Rural to the Urban Scenario)

Dr Elexson Nillian grew up in Kampung Long Selapun, Ulu Tinjar in Baram, a place deprived of adequate facilities where most families had to make do with what little they had to get by. Nevertheless, Dr Elexson knew that where there was a will, there was a way and that hard work always paid off. Armed with this knowledge and a steely determination not to let deprivation stand in his way to a higher education, he persevered in his studies, eventually earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Bio-Technology at Universiti Industri Selangor (Unisel) in 2011 and subsequently, a Master of Science at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Later on he continued his studies at UPM and graduated with a PhD in Food Safety with the distinction of being the first PhD graduate from the Sebob (Kenyah) community. The hardships Dr Elexson faced during his school days motivated him to strive for higher education because he believed that it was the only way to change lives for the better, especially for someone from a poor background like him. As such, he believes that hardship builds strong character and education is vital in shaping a better future. For him, education is the key to success and a better life. Dr Elexson represented Malaysia in several programmes while still in university, including those organised by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has also presented a number of talks, especially on academics pertaining to the Borneo community – as he realised that his PhD was not meant just for him to have a better life but also to enlighten people, from rural areas in particular, and that education changes lives for the better. Thus, he became determined to serve his people in Sarawak and become a role model for them.

Dr Esther Michael

Doctor, beauty queen and humanitarian

TOPIC: PASSION: TURNING YOUR DREAM INTO CAREER A Sarawakian of mixed Bidayuh-Chinese-Iban parentage, Dr Esther Michael who graduated with honors from the First Moscow State Medical University believes that dreams are powerful and can shape one’s world. Nevertheless, she realises that it takes lots of sacrifice, time and talent to accomplish them. Inspired to achieve her dreams since childhood, Dr Esther always strived hard to do well in her studies. Dr Esther scored all As in her UPSR before she continued her studies at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Kuching. She also scored straight As in her SPM examination. Upon graduation, Dr Esther - who always wanted to be a doctor - received multiple offers to choose from right after SPM, and Russia caught her attention. A humanitarian at heart, she is now back home for good to serve her own people and has served in several humanitarian missions in Asia. She also co-founded Help Somebody – a community initiative that connects people to make a difference in the community – with husband Dr Dalvinder Singh last year. Help Somebody aims to help people by connecting volunteers of different background to make a difference in their community. Its work is focused in the area of healthcare, education, life skills and poverty eradication. To know more about Help Somebody, visit www.helpsomebody.com.my. Apart from reaching down and lifting people up, Dr Esther strongly believes that a woman should be smart and wise, strong yet gentle but most importantly confidently beautiful with a heart.

SPEAKERS Ashweein Narayanan

Engineer / Travel Agency Executive Director

TOPIC: SYNERGY – FOR MILLENNIALS, BY A MILLENNIAL An engineer and travel agency executive director, Ashweein Narayanan is a proud Sarawakian hailing from Kuching. After a good number of years working in the engineering field outside of Kuching with notable companies such as Brooke Dockyard, Naim, Technip and Petronas, he decided to move back to run three businesses along with his parents last year. The nature of these businesses include tours and travel, building services (cleaning, monitoring and evaluation, air-conditioning, electrical) as well as a fashion boutique. He is also actively involved in community-based efforts and groups, from Wordsmiths of Kuching to Briged Sukarelawan Khidmat Negara, as well as a growing community-driven arts and culture hub known as HAUS KCH. At the moment, Ashweein is also a part-time word artist, poet and a stand-up comedian, and has been performing here since last year.

Dr Dalvinder Singh

Sarawak State Health Department senior assistant director

TOPIC: DISCOVERING YOUR UNIQUE S.H.A.P.E. Dr Dalvinder Singh realised that many graduates, including those from medical programmes, are in the wrong line of work. This, he believes, contributes to the high dropout rate among the junior doctors in Malaysia. Hence, he believes it is vital for the new generation to recognise their unique ‘S.H.A.P.E’ (Special Gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personalities and Experiences) so that they can make the right choice in deciding their studies and careers. The Punjabi was born in Ipoh, but spent his formative years in Bintulu and Kuantan, Pahang before moving to Kuala Lumpur. Upon the completion of his studies at Moscow Medical Academy in 2010, he came to Kuching and worked as a medical officer at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH). Dr Dalvinder is the founder of the Malaysian Medical Fellowship (MMF) which was established in 2007 as a Malaysian Fellowship (MF), then as MMF in 2013 after being officially registered as a non-profit organisation in Malaysia. It runs many humanitarian works across the fields of healthcare (mobile medical clinics, intestinal parasite treatment and health talks), social work (family welfare and community care) and community development (education, water and sanitation, as well as public health). Last year, the first-runner of the Asian Youth Ambassador (AYA) Award 2010 founded ‘Help Somebody’ – a community initiative that aims to connect volunteers in making a difference to the community. This movement is premised on the principle ‘to find a need and meet it, and to find a hurt and heal it’. The activities conducted by Dr Dalvinder via Help Somebody include giving away care packs to family members of patients at hospitals including SGH and Miri Hospital, as well as meeting students at several schools and sharing with them inspiring stories that would encourage them to look forward to a good future – all as part of his own initiative to help affect change and make a difference with the gifts and talents he has in the medical line.

Syed Nizamuddin Sayed Khassim Administrative and Diplomatic Service Officer (PTD)

TOPIC: A CAREER IN DIPLOMACY As an administrative and Diplomatic Services officer (PTD), Syed Nizamuddin currently serves as an Assistant Secretary to the Multilateral Economics and Environment Division (MEED) of the Foreign Affairs Ministry at Wisma Putra, Kuala Lumpur. In 2014, Kuching-born Syed Nizamuddin was elected to the Malaysian Youth Parliament (MYP) and was selected as one of the ranking members of the International Relations and Diplomacy Committee (IRDC). Syed Nizamuddin attended St Thomas’ kindergarten and later, St Joseph’s Primary School before continuing his secondary studies at Kolej DPAH Abdillah in Kuching. Upon his graduation from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) – he attended both the Shah Alam and Kota Samarahan campuses – in 2010, he joined Yayasan Sarawak as one of its youngest senior officers, overseeing the organisation’s corporate communications and later the state’s technical policy development. In 2013, he left Kuching to serve in the administrative and diplomatic service. Syed Nizamuddin, who is currently pursuing his postgraduate studies at Universiti Malaya is now focusing his energy on empowering youths in Malaysia, particularly Sarawakians, as well as on the concept of embracing diversity. Syed Nizamuddin is a strong believer in good governance, believing that ‘toxic partisan politics’ is hazardous. During his time in the IRDC, he worked with individuals across various political leanings to ‘bridge our partisan divide and explore for pragmatic solutions’. Syed Nizamuddin pushed for several national initiatives during his tenure with MYP – one of which was the proposal for the decentralisation of the federal economic system. He also pushed for having ‘more voices from Borneo in our national narrative’ and also for further understanding between the people of Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah. Syed Nizamuddin has also been actively involved in various non-profit and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), continuously being invited as the speaker for some of their programmes. He is also one of the regular contributors to the ‘Diplomatic Voice’ and other publications. He has written and spoken extensively on international politics and on Sarawak.

Rachel Lau

The Borneo Post business writer TOPIC: IELTS: HOW TO SCORE The Borneo Post business writer believes that many students have felt that to get a score of 6.0 to 7.0 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – generally an entry requirement for many tertiary institutions and programmes – is a rather difficult hurdle to overcome as they doubt their own English language skills. However, Lau pointed out that Malaysia is one of the top scorers in IELTS with an average of 6.8, matching both Australia and Canada’s average results. She also emphasised that a grade just shy of passing however is not necessarily a reflection of inadequate English language skills but rather a lack of proper preparation for the actual IELTS exam structure. Lau said the speaking component could throw many off as they go in unprepared and nervous, leading them to stammer rather than speak fluently as they would normally. Lau had the pleasure of undertaking the IELTS examination for academic purposes on two separate occasions. For both occasions, she managed to score a band average of 8.0 with only self-preparation from the materials provided on the official IELTS website. In addition to this, she has also helped numerous coursemates and classmates prepare for their IELTS examination for both academic and general training purposes and have been successful in this endeavour.

In 2010, Zaiwin was acknowledged as one of several accomplished individuals featured on ‘Malaysian Innovator’ – a publication of Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) endorsed by Malaysia Association of Creativity and Innovation (Macri) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti). Salihin Abang

Entrepreneur and founder of Salihin Chartered Accountants TOPIC: REFLECTION OF MY PERSONAL JOURNEY Salihin Chartered Accountants is the realisation of Salihin Abang’s vision of creating a positive impact on the world around him. This award-winning entrepreneur has always been passionate about youth and community development. This has led him to establish the world’s first Teaching Accountancy Firm (TAF) to bridge the gap between theory and practice, and at the same time produce young entrepreneurs and industry-ready graduates. He is also responsible for the first-ever ‘zakat’ (tithe) and endowment accounting software that caters to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), allowing them to exercise their obligations in welfare and charity – the shariah-compliant way. Salihin is a strong believer in touching lives through charity, inspirational talks and sharing of experiences. Life is all about perspective. For Salihin, perspective is about seeing things through a different lens, knowing that someone is going through something worse; as long as one is still alive and healthy, nothing is unfixable. Hence, it is important to find the right perspective to become more accepting and much happier. Salihin believes that it is important to have the right dream that stretches you in the right direction. Being a youth with many goals himself, he believes that dreams do come true with hard work and great discipline. He stressed that for youths to become successful, they must seek knowledge, be curious to learn as well as be humble when learning from others. Additionally, they must also understand a certain subject or topic in depth and be authentic in terms of discovering and realising their inner potential. Salihin encourages the youth to chart their own life history and write their life story as they envision it.
