E3

Messages WITH the advent of modern smartphone technology and access to limitless information at their fingertips, we often hear parents and many of the older generation commenting on how the youth of today have it much easier compared to themselves a mere 30, 20, even 10 years ago. This limitless access, however, does not necessarily guarantee a bright future. To quote physicist William Pollard, “Information is a source of learning. But unless it is organised, processed, and available to the right people in a format for decision making, it is a burden, not a benefit.” It’s easy to take these freedoms for granted; just as it should be easier for our youths to mobilise themselves for social change and contribute to national development. They must improve. The way to this is through a sound education system. A strong education system gives our youths the skills and knowledge as well as the resources and support to ensure a productive life which in turn ensures they have a chance at a successful and sustainable future. Youths must be motivated to go beyond just basic education and they must be instilled with positive attitudes. They should be sufficiently informed so they can make wise choices over their careers. This year the Borneo Post International Education Fair brings professionals from the industry to speak on careers which we hope will give students and their parents a better insight as to what to pursue after SPM or STPM.

“Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.” – Kofi Annan, 2001 Nobel Peace Prize winner. All Malaysians must have equal access to education and the Sarawak State Education Department is adamant in emphasising this in its policies. Getting an all-around education paves the way for our citizens to build a progressive life for themselves and every citizen should have this right. Being educated gives students access to a world of possibilities as they acquire the confidence and more importantly, the knowledge with which to pursue their futures. The Sarawak State Education Department is tasked and fully committed to ensuring students are prepared for the challenges and right skills and mindset. Getting a tertiary education or skills training will enable them to face the numerous challenges that come with technological advancements, economic, environmental, political and social advancements. Students need information on the choices available as well as viable careers to choose from. Our Sarawak State Education counsellors are on hand at the Borneo Post International Education Fair to help and advise them on this aspect. The wide variety of local, national and international institutions offering formal and vocational training under one roof will provide much to choose from.

DATUK HAJAH FATIMAH ABDULLAH

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development BPIEF Patron As Minister for Welfare, Women and Family Development who also has the Watching brief for Education in Sarawak, I strongly urge students, parents and teachers to take this opportunity to visit the Borneo Post International Education Fair (BPIEF) 2016 which showcases over 90 exhibitors and speak with the institutions representatives.

RAKAYAH HJ MADON

Director of Sarawak Education Department

I urge students and parents to visit Borneo Post International Education Fair for the exposure and to look at the very wide range of choices and options available for their tertiary education and skills training. ‘Fly Kenyalang Fly, Fly High’

THE recent changes in the JPA bursary awards have caused much anxiety and stress not only among the affected students and their parents, but undoubtedly, also among aspiring students for whom, and all those in the same situation, such financial study aid may mean the difference between an ordinary and a tertiary education. In the light of the turn of events, we hope the Borneo Post International Education Fair (BPIEF) – where representatives of universities, colleges, higher learning institutions and training centres come together to advise students and their parents on available studies and courses – can provide a fitting platform to assist and benefit all quarters concerned in the cause of higher education and development of human capital in the country. BPIEF is now entering into its seventh year. No matter how technology has advanced – even to the extent of bringing a copious reservoir of information within the reach of one simple mouse click – the advantages of having face-to-face discussions with experts in an education fair like BPIEF do often outweigh the appliances of faceless digital dialogue. The Fair is an opportunity whereby students, parents and guardians can source for the best information with which to make a decision to shape the future, hence saving time and resources which would otherwise go to waste if a wrong study or course were chosen due to lack of information and knowledge. BPIEF, in its own unique way, is acting as the bridge between the government that aspires to provide the people with quality education as well as information on choices of education and training programmes, and institutions of higher learning that strive to tap the socio-academic potential of students to the full under one roof. It is organised with full knowledge of the fact that the ability to know what to expect in an increasingly competitive world of education and learning is a vital quality a student should be imbued with. We feel it is our corporate social responsibility to give back to society that has We welcome you to the 7th edition of Borneo Post International Education Fair (BPIEF), a CSR activity of Borneo Post for the people of Sarawak and neighbouring countries. It has been a journey of many sorts as we bring together 92 reputable exhibitors under one roof at BCCK. We are blessed with collaborators who have pitched in their time and effort to organise activities and talks for the visitors especially the youths. The BPIEF Committee takes this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for the continuous support and guidance of our Patron the Honourable Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah, the State Education Department, State Department for Women & Family, OurYouth.my, AZAM, SarawakYes! and iCube Innovation. We also thank the teachers, students, exhibitors, parents, volunteers as well as the various organisations that have provided feedback to improve this event. We, at BPIEF, welcome new and returning exhibitors from public and private institutions both local and overseas. We also thank the corporations who sponsored lucky draw prizes as well as gift bags. Thank you.

PHYLLIS WONG

The Borneo Post & Utusan Borneo Editorial Director/ General Operations Manager BPIEF Advisor been responsible for our present remarkable standing within the orbit of the print media in Sarawak and Sabah. We are also thankful to the government of Sarawak, YB Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah, Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development and BPIEF patron, the State Education Department and various quarters for their efforts, assistance and advice in ensuring the success of the event year after year. The Borneo Post would also like to extend its warmest welcome to all the exhibitors and visitors, and record with sincere thanks their support for yet another BPIEF endeavour that aspires to champion the cause of education state and nationwide.
