Further information
What is rock school? Rock School is a summer holiday program for music students and musicians in high school who want to expand their skills in popular and contemporary music. Launched in 2008, the program is taught by the Queensland Conservatorium, one of Australia’s leading music schools, and is offered at Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus. The Conservatorium is committed to nurturing and developing musical talent and is renowned for innovative music education. Rock School offers students with a passion for popular music an insight into its unique Bachelor of Popular Music degree. Students will have access to industry-standard music technology and expert guidance in stagecraft and live sound, with a focus on songwriting, performance and recording in a studio context. They will have the opportunity to begin building the skills needed for a career in the popular music industry before they finish high school. Rock School is a not-to-miss opportunity for students with skills in popular music interested in all areas of recording and music technology.
The Rock School Program Rock School runs for five days with classes limited to 25 students to ensure students get the most from their experience. Students participate in a series of workshops run by industry experts in areas such as songwriting, rehearsal and performance.
FAQS WHO ARE THE TEACHERS? WHAT IF I’M IN A BAND?
No, but groups are kept to a maximum of 25 or split into two smaller groups, so everyone can interact with the teachers and get individual attention. We do not provide instrumental tuition, but you’ll be able to hone your skills in the jam session, which covers things like improvisation, rehearsal techniques, and songwriting.
ARE TRAVEL / ACCOMMODATION ASSISTANCE AND MEALS INCLUDED?
No, travel and accommodation need to be organised independently. There is some accommodation close to the campus that may suit your needs, such as:
Daily sessions will cover the following topics: • Introduction to the music industry • Introduction to studio sound
The Griffith University Village is ideally located on the Griffith Gold Coast campus. The Village is close to shopping precincts, transport, and major Gold Coast attractions. Visit the website for more information or to book directly online: griffithuv.com.au Metro On Central is a student accommodation complex on the Gold Coast. It is located a short distance from Griffith’s Gold Coast campus. For further information check out: metrooncentral.com It is recommended you pack your own lunch as the cafe on campus is located 10-minutes’ walk away from the Rock School venue.
The program culminates in a concert at the end of the week, which friends and family are invited to attend. Students will also receive a recording of their work.
Students will be split into groups and will attend two sessions a day for the first four days. Each session runs for three hours, with a one-hour break for lunch.
No worries! If all members of a band are enrolled, we will keep you together so you can learn as a group. You can also use the CD you record at the end of a week as promotional material!
IS THERE ANY PRIVATE INSTRUCTION?
Collaborating with other talented young musicians, students will learn how to set up a live sound system and use computer music technologies to enhance their creative work. They’ll have the opportunity to work with industry-standard recording equipment and learn how to take advantage of the current conditions of the popular music industry.
Rock School session topics
Professional musicians/instructors from the industry and teachers from Griffith’s Bachelor of Popular Music.
ARE PARENTS ALLOWED TO ATTEND / OBSERVE ACTIVITIES? DO STUDENTS NEED TO BRING INSTRUMENTS?
We find parents being present at the daily activities and rehearsals can be distracting for the students. However, we invite and encourage family and friends to attend the live performance at the end of the week and listen to the final product on the CD the students receive.
Yes, bring your own instrument (excluding drums), but we will provide amps, keyboards, and microphones.
• Introduction to live sound • Introduction to song writing • Computer music technology • Jamming and rehearsal techniques • Recording • Performance
WHO DECIDES WHAT MUSIC WE PLAY?
Wherever possible, students will be grouped according to their musical taste. You can choose to play covers or, even better, original music, which the teachers can help you develop. Groups can vote on which songs will be recorded on their CD.
