arent/Teacher Interviews As you are aware, parent/ teacher interviews will be held on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th March. Accordingly, parents are provided an opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher to discuss progress, achievement and future learning goals. We hope all families will take advantage of the opportunity provided.

homework, being home after school or limiting screen time.

With that said, it may be timely to reiterate the importance of parent involvement and the difference this involvement can make to a child’s learning. In essence, there are four key things that parents can do to support their child’s learning.

4. Reading with children Parents make a major difference by reading and talking about books and stories with their children, in any language. Reading skills can be taught at school, and parents can help build a crucial foundation for successful literacy through conversation and reading together, which develops the motivation to read, a greater level of comprehension, and strong oral language skills. Principals Australia Institute Learning Leading 15 March 2018

1. Having high expectations The research shows undeniably, that high parental expectations have the greatest impact on student achievement. Studies looking at teacher's perception of the positive attitude parents have toward their child's education, teacher, and school, was significantly related to increased academic performance, measured by both a standardized achievement test and teacher ratings of the child's classroom academic performance. Further, parent involvement was significantly related to academic performance above and beyond the impact of the child's intelligence (IQ). 2. Talking about school at home Studies have shown that parents talking to their kids about school and school activities at home, had a greater impact on learning than monitoring

3. Helping students develop a positive attitude and good work habits As students get older, the impact parents can have on their child’s academic achievement may decline. Parents can’t teach their children everything they need to know (the same goes for schools), but the habits they encourage at an early age, have long-lasting benefits, through to high school. Teachers focus on content, and parents can assist by helping their child develop a sense of personal competence, encouraging persistence, showing them how to plan and manage their time, handle distractions, and ask for help when they need it.

ultural Diversity Week It could be said that our Cultural Diversity Week commenced “unofficially” at last week’s assembly when a trio of students from Year 2 led the assembled students in singing the Mandarin song Gong Xi Gong Xi! However, this Tuesday, our cultural diversity celebrations continued with a little “australianna” when a member of the Bushwazee Bush Band involved our students in an assortment of traditional bush dances!

hinese Language and Culture This year, our visit to our sister school, in Jiangsu, CHINA is scheduled for 15—27 September. There has been great interest in this opportunity by families and following a well-attended and comprehensive information night conducted on Tuesday 12 March at 6:00 p.m. for those families interested in their child participating in this wonderful, cultural opportunity, twenty-two expressions of interest were lodged!

With circles or lines formed and partners taken, the children enjoyed dancing some classic favourites such as The Stockyards, Gallopade and Heel and Toe Polka!

Although informed previously that the maximum number each school can take will be 16 students and 3 teachers, enquiries with JESIE here in Australia have confirmed that Brentwood Park Primary can take all who have lodged their interest. This is testimony to the positive experience we and our sister school have had as a result of this program.

Jiangsu Educational Services for International Exchange [JESIE] are providing funding support to partly cover the full cost. Each participant will only pay AUD $2,000 as a Over the course of the week, all year levels had the package including international airfares and in-country costs (for accommodation, meals, transportation and opportunity to participate. tours in Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai as well as the sister school visit with homestay). ports Shorts SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY Students and teachers will need to cover own costs for The annual school cross country passport, visa and insurance. LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE.

Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them off their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Envelopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line. All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made). Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and per mission slips ar e required to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm bookings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the Department of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending. We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
