Belt disk sander

The Belt and Disc Sander is used for surface or edge sanding of wood materials. This machine can be used for some types of rough, end-grain sanding and for simple shaping.

Table- This can be adjusted on most belt and disk sanders between the angle of 0 and 45 degrees using the table adjuster knob. In the diagram (above) this belt and disk sander has an adjustable fence which can slide up and down the table. The angle can also be changed.

Belt and Disk- These come in a variety of different grits and can easily be changed.

Fence- This acts as a stop for the workpiece when sanding is in progress.

Step 1 • Before starting the process it important that long hair is tied up, sleeves are rolled up, any jewellery is removed, safety glasses and a dusk mask/respirator are put on.

Step 2 • Before using the belt and disk sander it is important that the extraction system is turned to extract some of the saw dust that will be generated by the sander.

Step 3 • If the sanding disc rotates in a counter clockwise direction, the material to be sanded should be positioned from the centre of the disc to the left edge. If positioned from the centre of the disc to the right edge it will pull the workpiece in an upward direction creating an unsafe condition.

Step 4 • The operator should never reach across the sanding disc to turn the sander on or off as this could result in a serious cut or entanglement.

Step 5 • Hold stock steady as it is being sanded, firm but not excessive pressure should be applied on the sanding disc or belt .

Step 6 • When turning on the machine the workpiece should never be in contact with the saw blade.

Step 7 • Once machine is in operation keep your hands, fingers, and body parts well out of the way of the blade and never have your hand or fingers in the line of cut.

Step 8 • If the blade breaks the emergency stop should be pressed immediately. If the operator needs to back out of a cut the scroll saw should firstly be turned off and then the workpiece should be slowly backed out to get it off the blade.
