Tropea, 52, of Newport News, Virginia, was sentenced yesterday to 336 months and a lifetime of supervised release following his convictions on three counts of receipt of child pornography and one count of making a false statement to an agent of the United States. Dana J. Boente, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, FBI Special Agent in Charge Royce E. Curtin, and Richard Myers, Chief of Newport New Police, made the announcement after sentencing by United States District Judge Robert Doumar. Tropea pleaded guilty on November 7, 2013. According to court documents, on May 8, 2013, police responded to the Host Inn where Tropea was living after a friend of his had not heard from him in several days. Upon arriving at the hotel, the manager informed them that a surveillance tape showed Tropea leaving the hotel on May 5, 2013, on his bicycle but not returning. Police entered the room to investigate the missing persons report and found numerous phone numbers inside the room. Officers called several people to try and locate Tropea, including his probation officer, whose business card was located in the hotel room. While in the room, officers found a laptop computer as well as a coffee can full of thumb drives. After speaking to the probation officer, police learned that Tropea was on federal supervised release for fraud and possession of child pornography and was barred from having a computer. The search was stopped when they discovered he was in violation of his supervision. FBI agents obtained a search warrant and numerous items were seized, including the computer and thumb drives. Tropea was later located at an area jail. A forensic exam of the computer and thumb drives was conducted and more than 40,000 images of child pornography were found. This case was investigated by FBI and Newport News Police. Assistant United States Attorney Lisa R. McKeel prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States. LAPD cops in riot gear break up peaceful Occupy action in Los Angeles, part of a coordinated national attack on the movement The Met cited last week’s decision by the home secretary, Theresa May, to order a public inquiry into the undercover infiltration of political groups and the huge public interest in the issue. The women launched the legal action in 2011 saying they had suffered intense emotional trauma after discovering that men they had had long-term relationships with were undercover police officers. The officers worked for the Special Demonstration Squad, the covert unit that infiltrated and disrupted political campaigners for four decades. “Plaintiff ’s conditions of confinement on death row are undeniably extreme and atypical of conditions in the general population units at [the prison]. He must remain alone in his cell for nearly 23 hours per day... The lights never go out in his cell, although they are scaled back during the overnight hours... Plaintiff is allowed just five hours of outdoor recreation per week... and that time is spent in another cell at best slightly larger than his living quarters... He otherwise has no ability to catch a glimpse of the sky because the window in his cell is a window in name only... Nor can he pass the time in the company of other inmates; plaintiff is deprived of most forms of human contact... His only real break from the monotony owes to a television and compact disc player in his cell and limited interactions with prison officials...” Fight for 15 This is crazy. Doing business in America isn’t a right, it’s a privilege. Companies get lots of benefits for that privilege, from limitations on their liability and risk, to the ability to pay their executives with options that face a maximum 20 percent tax rate. Their executives can even fly fancy corporate jets and eat $500 dinners and have it all tax-deductible, meaning they’re subsidized by working-class taxpayers. To get these privi-
leges, companies should at least conduct themselves to certain minimum standards ^^ like paying their workers a living wage. Right now the only thing in the way of a minimum wage increase are Republicans, who consistently rationalize tax breaks for the rich along with low wages for the working poor by saying that raising the minimum wage will hurt the economy. Instead, ALPRs automatically collect information. The law enforcement agencies acknowledge that there is a privacy interest in this information, but ironically argues that this means the data should not be released. Got the keel drilled yesterday. I watched a peregrine at Cape Kiwanda try to fly with a big gull it must have killed (nothing else around and gull was still alive... (wiggling weakly and bill opening). Could not get off the ground so started tearing at the gull, feathers flying everywhere. After a few minutes tried again, only got a few feet and back down, tore some more off, tried again and got farther but still must not have felt safe to
tore some more. It eventually got the gull into the air and flew low, circling back over the cape rather than out to sea toward its aerie where there were young waiting to be fed, made the circuit over land as much as possible then to the waiting mouths. We were in a dip of the cape watching and the peregrine flew right over our heads on his final successful flight. That gull still looked way too big for a peregrine to be carrying. I took photos. One watches them on the seashore, all the people, and there is something pathetic, almost wistful in them, as if they wished their lives did not add up to this scaly nullity of possession, but they could not escape. It is a dragon that has devoured us all: these obscene, scaly houses, this insatiable struggle and desire to possess, to possess always and in spite of everything, this need to be an owner, lest one be owned. It is too hideous and nauseating. Owners and owned, they are like the two sides of a ghastly disease. One feels a sort of madness come over one, as if the world had become hell. But it is only superimposed: it is only a temporary disease. It can be cleaned away. Deirdre M. Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Angela D. Martin, also known as Angela H a u s s mann, 29, of Wa l l i n g ford, pleaded guilty today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Holly B. Fitzsimmons in Bridgeport to one count of production of child pornography. According to court documents and statements made in court, in August 2013, Martin sexually abused a female child, filmed the abuse with her cell phone, and then e-mailed the video to another individual in California. The victim was approximately three years old at the time of the abuse. In addition to filming and distributing the video of the sexual abuse that she inflicted on the female child, Martin possessed and distributed other child pornography that she received from individuals with whom she was communicating via e-mail, text messaging, and chat applications. Martin is a registered sex offender as the result of a prior felony conviction in the state of Connecticut for second-degree sexual assault of a minor. Martin is scheduled to be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall in New Haven on June 20, 2014, at which time she faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 50 years. The penalties in this matter are enhanced based on Martin’s criminal history. Martin has been de-
tained since her arrest on September 19, 2013. This matter is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Wallingford Police Department, and the Connecticut Child Exploitation Task Force, which includes federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Neeraj N. Patel. Anyone who thought climate change was something happening far away, to someone else, should think again. According to the world’s leading scientists, climate change is an increasing threat to human safety around the world. In a new report to be published in the end of March by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is expected to conclude that climate change puts lives, cultures and well-being at risk and can fuel forced migration, violence and conflicts. Their detailed report suggests that climate change will increasingly shape national security policies. Already last month, US Secretary of State John Kerry named climate change as a security threat, calling it “perhaps the world’s most fearsome weapon of mass destruction”. If that sounds familiar, that’s because that phrase was already made famous by former IPCC Co-Chair Sir John Houghton a decade ago. In the context of former US President George Bush and former UK Prime Ministry Tony Blair leading an illegal war against Iraq on the pretense of Iraq having weapons of mass destruction, he pointed out that anyone truly worried about weapons of mass destruction and terrorism, should fight climate change. Since then, climate change as a security threat has been discussed a few times in the UN Security Council, but these discussions produced little. In the 2011 session, the President of Nauru hit the nail on the head, making the link between human security and climate change explicit: “[Climate change] It is a threat as great as nuclear proliferation or terrorism, and it carries the potential to destabilise governments and ignite conflict. Neither nuclear proliferation nor terrorism has ever led to the disappearance of an entire nation, though that is what we are confronted with today” It’s shameful the Security Council didn’t act on those words. But it is a good thing Secretary Kerry now understands the gravity of the threat. as long as the US spends billions on wars abroad, and billions at home as well to subsidise fossil fuel supply. The US energy policy applies a token effort toward climate solutions compared with what it does to maintain fossil fuel addiction. We’re had 3.3” of rain here since last Wednesday. Italy on Wednesday said it had recovered a painting worth millions of euros by Paul Gauguin, stolen in London in 1970, bought by an Italian factory worker for a pittance and hung in his kitchen for almost 40 years. The artist’s “Fruit on a table or small dog” was stolen from a house in the British capital along with “Woman with two chairs” by fellow Frenchman Pierre Bonnard, and they were recovered together in Italy from the pensioner, who used to work for Italian auto giant Fiat. The Gauguin painting is worth between 10 and 30 million euros ($13 and $41 million) while the Bonnard is valued at some 600,000 euros, Italy’s heritage police said at a press conference on Wednesday. The paintings turned up in a lost property department at a train station and were sold at auc-
tion in 1975 to a worker for Italian auto giant Fiat, who bought them for 45,000 Italian lire, or 23 euros. Hundreds of artifacts linked to the doomed luxury liner Titanic will be sold online this month and could fetch as much as a million dollars, Boston-based auction house RR said on Thursday. RR, specializing in documents, manuscripts and historic artifacts, said it will put some 240 objects from the famous vessel on sale online, amid enduring fascination with the doomed luxury liner more than a century after it sank. RR, specializing in documents, manuscripts and historic artifacts, said the sale will be held from April 17 to 24. Once thought to be unsinkable, the Titanic struck an iceberg and went down in the North Atlantic in 1912, killing more than 1,500 people. The objects to be sold include letters, photos, objects from the vessel and items which once belonged to survivors. The object with the highest starting price is a silver cup. Today we view King as something of a saint, his birthday a national holiday, and his name adorning schools and street signs. But in his day, the establishment considered King a dangerous troublemaker. He was harassed by the FBI and vilified in the media. He began his activism in Montgomery, Alabama, as a crusader against the nation’s racial caste system, but the struggle for civil rights radicalized him into a fighter for broader economic and social justice. He recognized the limits of breaking down legal segregation. What good was winning the right to eat at a dime-store lunch counter if you couldn’t afford a hamburger and a Coke? A half-century before Occupy Wall Street, King warned about the “gulf between the haves and the have-nots” and insisted that America needed a “better distribution of wealth.” West Bengal is very safe for foreigners. There is hardly any incident of crime against foreigners in recent years. People are friendly and accept people of different cultures warmly. As a foreigner you might find people staring at you but they are just curious. But if you notice anything objectionable in their behaviour with you, face them boldly and ask for help. People are helpful and you will have them coming to your rescue. You may also call the police. They are reliable. There are certain areas in West Bengal infested with Maoists insurgents and the State government along with the central forces is in a state of battle with them. These areas are mostly located to the south-west of West Bengal along its border with neighbouring state of Odisha (formerly Orissa) and Jharkhand. The areas include, district of Paschim Medinipur, parts of Purba Medinipur, Purulia and Bankura. These places though have rich tribal culture heritage, are not usually flocked by tourists. Those planning to visit must assess security situation prevailing at that time. Though the targets of the insurgents are mostly personnel of security forces, few attacks on civilians were also reported in the past. Thankfully, incidence of Maoist violence has gone down in recent times but they continue to be a ruthless force. Apart from that the rest of West Bengal is very tourist friendly. For about the last decade, Israel and US neocon hawks have been trying to convince the world that Iran is six months away from producing a nuclear bomb, and the dire consequences if they’re not stopped. Israel’s cited source for this evidence is their vaunted intelligence services which have been proven wrong time and time again. Realizing that President Obama and the rest of the world is sick and tired of their “crying wolf,” Israel and certain neocon related elements within the US military and intelligence apparatus are clearly getting desperate for action which now appears to be in the form of a joint false flag operation to implicate Iran. The state, after the coordinated nationwide eradication of Occupy encampments, has relentlessly used the courts to harass and neutralize Occupy activists, often handing out long probation terms that come with activists^^ forced acceptance of felony charges. A felony charge makes it harder to find employment and bars those with such convictions from serving on juries or working for law enforcement. Most important, the long probation terms effectively prohibit further activism. The Occupy Wall Street movement was not only about battling back against the rise of a corporate oligarchy that has sabotaged our democracy and made war on the poor and the working class. It was also about our right to peaceful protest. The police in cities across the country have been used to shortcircuit this right. I watched New York City police during the Occupy protests yank people from sidewalks into the street, where they would be arrested. I saw police routinely shove protesters and beat them with batons. I saw activists slammed against police cars. I saw groups of protesters suddenly herded like sheep to be confined within police barricades. I saw, and was caught up in, mass arrests in which those around me were handcuffed and then thrown violently onto the sidewalk. The police often blasted pepper spray into faces from inches away, temporarily blinding the victims. This violence, carried out against nonviolent protesters, came amid draconian city ordinances that effectively outlawed protest and banned demonstrators from public spaces. It was buttressed by heavy police infiltration and surveillance of the movement. When the press or activists attempted to document the abuse by police they often were assaulted or otherwise blocked from taking photographs or videos. The message the state delivered is clear: Do not dissent. Attn: My name is Mr. Don Eric. I work as the operational manager in account management section in charge of credit and foreign bills of one of the prime banks here in London. On a routine inspection I discovered a dormant domiciliary account with a Balance Of (Forty eight million two hundred and twenty three thousand POUNDS STERLING) On further discreet investigation, I also discovered that the account holder has died long ago with his family on a fatal Auto-accident leaving no beneficiary to the account and no other person knows about this account.I am in close contact with the manager of the bank here who is my partner and he is willing to approve the transfer to any reliable and trustworthy foreigner with foreign bank account because the former operator of the a/c is a foreigner and from Australia in particular. I am certainly sure that he has no written or oral WILL attached to the account ,no beneficiary and nobody will come again for the claim of this money. It is only a foreigner who can claim this money with legal claims to the account holder which I will provide to you if you are interested, therefore I need your cooperation in this transaction. The difference in country of origins is not a hindrance to the success of this transaction. This money will remain useless in this dormant account if I did not transfer the fund out to a foreign account. I will provide the necessary information and documents needed in order to claim this money. I only need your cooperation as a foreigner to provide your safe bank account information for the transfer. At the conclusion of this transaction, your share will be 25% of the total transfer sum, 70% for me and my partner while 5% will be set aside for any expenses both parties might in cure during the process of the transfer. Let me hear from you URGENTLY. Best Regards, Mr. Don Eric Mobil: +447042035673 The US military is one of the greatest polluters and users of fossil fuels on the planet. group) who knowingly provides false information to police suggesting that a threat exists at a particular location so that police respond with tactical units. Making false threats drains law enforcement resources and can cause significant distress or physical injury to first responders or victims. This international case is a continuing investigation by the following agencies in Canada and the United States: Ottawa Police Department; Halton Regional Police; Laval Police; Surete’ du Quebec; Calgary Police Service; Riverside Police Department (California); Stockton Police Department (Californ i a ) ; Melbourne Police Department (Florida); Orlando Police Department (Florida); Greenwich Police D e p a r t m e nt (Connecticut); Montgomery County Police D e p a r t m e nt ( M a r y l a nd) ; Watervliet Police Department; Tampa Police Department; and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in multiple cities, including the FBI’s Legal Attache’ in Ottawa, Canada. Those in the premodern world who hoarded possessions and refused to redistribute supplies and food, who turned their backs on the weak and the sick, who lived exclusively for hedonism and their own power, were despised. Those in modern society who are shunned as odd, neurotic or eccentric, who are disconnected from the prosaic world of objective phenomena and fact, would have been valued in premodern cultures for their ability to see what others could not see. Dreams and visions- -considered ways to connect with the wisdom of ancestors--were integral to existence in distant times. Property was communal then. Status was conferred by personal heroism and providing for the weak and the indigent. And economic exchanges carried the potential for malice, hatred and evil: When wampum was exchanged by Native Americans the transaction had to include “medicine” that protected each party against “spiritual infection.” Only this premodern ethic can save us as we enter a future of economic uncertainty and endure the catastrophe of climate change. Social and economic life will again have to be communal. The lusts of capitalism will have to be tamed or destroyed. And there will have to be a recovery of reverence for the sacred, the bedrock of premodern society, so we can see each other and the earth not as objects to exploit but as living beings to be revered and protected. This means inculcating a very different vision of human society. Corey Charles Plunkett has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for distributing a
pornographic image of his 1year-old daughter to an undercover law enforcement officer. “Distribution of child pornography is in and of itself a heinous crime,” said United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates. “This case is all the more disturbing because the victim was the defendant’s 1-year-old daughter. We will continue to aggressively prosecute those who exploit our children.” J. Britt Johnson, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Atlanta Field Office, stated, “The FBI has, for many years, not only investigated those who would sexually exploit children but has also helped to educate the public and parents on how to better protect their children. To see a case, such as this, where the child’s father was sexually exploiting his own child leaves many of our seasoned investi-
gators without words.” According to United States Attorney Yates, the criminal indictment, and information presented in court, on September 26, 2013, a law enforcement officer in Ohio was engaged in an undercover investigation identifying subjects involved in the online victimization of children using two chat rooms known for attracting individuals with a sexual interest in children. He was contacted by a subject later identified as Corey Charles Plunkett. Plunkett wrote that he had a 1-year-old daughter and asked whether a 1year-old was too young for sexual activity. He also stated that he wanted his daughter to perform oral sex. Shortly thereafter, Plunkett sent an image of himself, a non-pornographic image of his daughter, and later that day a pornographic image of his daughter to the undercover officer. During the execution of a search warrant at the defendant’s home in Cobb County, Georgia, police seized Plunkett’s phone and located the image that Plunkett had sent to the undercover officer. Plunkett, 27, of Marietta, Georgia, was sentenced by United States District Judge Steve C. Jones to 12 years in prison, to be followed by supervised release for life. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment. The defendant will be required to register as a sex offender when he is released from prison. This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cobb County Police Department. Carol Fraser gave me your contact information; I hope that’s ok. My name is Andrew Hind. I’m a writer and historian who works contributes columns to Muskoka Life and The Muskokan. I’d be very interested in doing a story on your Muskoka ancestors and the store they operated in Housey’s Rapids. Would you be willing to answer some of my questions and perhaps also share some information and pictures? In addition, you may be interested to note that the Brace’s played a significant role in the story of Muskoka murderer and outlaw Black Bill Ruttan, whose reign of terror was exactly one hundred years ago this May. Ruttan had a beef with your descendants and therefore burned some of their holdings. I detail Bill’s life and times in a book coming out later this month (Notorious Ontario: Murderers, Gangsters and Criminals) but what my co-author, Maria Da Silva, and
want to do is write a full book on Black Bill at a later date. We envision including a capsule biography of all the relevant parties, including the Braces. Anything you can do to help us with these projects would be appreciated. A Tunisian court upheld a new eightmonth prison sentence for Jaebur Mejri, a man who had recently been released after serving two years for posting cartoons of the prophet Mohammed online. The new charges stem from an incident in April in which Mejri allegedly quarrelled with a court clerk, according to Bassem Triffi, one of Jabeur’s lawyers. Mejri and his friend Ghazi Beji were sentenced to seven and a half years in prison in March 2012 for posting content deemed offensive to Islam. Beji, however, fled the country before the start of the trial and now lives in France where he has obtained political asylum. Mejri was in prison until March of this year, when he was released after being granted a presidential pardon. On April 17, Jabeur went to the court of first instance in Mehdia to check the status of additional charges against him. He argued with a clerk, then was arrested and charged with “verbally abusing a public official,” Triffi told Tunisia Live. He was sentenced to eight months on April 30, and the appeals court confirmed the decision Wednesday. Jabeur still faces charges that he improperly handled 1,600 dinars ($1,000) worth of tickets while working for the Tunisian national railway company in 2011. Jabeur’s cause has been taken up by advocacy organizations such as Amnesty International, which viewed him as a prisoner of conscience. The Children’s Aid Society was founded in 1853 by Charles Loring Brace and a group of social reformers at a time when orphan asylums and almshouses were the only “social services” available for poor and homeless children. Brace’s theory of an organization devoted to helping poor children was radical. His progressive ideas translated into far-reaching services and reforms for poor and homeless children, working women, needy families and disabled boys and girls at a time when services for these groups were few and far between. Educated to be a minister, Brace was determined to give children an alternative to life in the squalid slums and teeming New York City streets. His theories were grounded in the conviction that institutional care stunted and destroyed children. According to Brace, the answers to transforming New York’s orphans and street children into self-reliant members of society were gainful work, education, and a wholesome family atmosphere. Charles Loring Brace’s work transformed the face of social services and social reforms in New York City and across the nation. His imprint his legacy has benefited millions and millions of children. Of course, much has changed since his time, including the concepts of children’s rights and parental responsibility, but Brace’s imprint remains an enduring one. The Orphan Train Movement. Between 1853 and 1929, more than 150,000 abandoned, abused and orphaned children were rescued from the streets and slums of New York City and taken by train to start new lives with families on farms across the country. The emphasis was on giving these needy children a family life. Like most aspiring authors, I thought of self-publishing as a cottage industry, mostly tainted by mothballs. My feet were planted firmly in the traditional agentto-publisher route, mapped out with dead-ends and rejection slips. Naively, I believed if my writing was good enough then it would sell. What I didn’t gamble on were the odds being stacked against me. To get an agent,
open a publisher’s door, so many things--all beyond my control--had to line up just right. The key was finding an agent who believed in my work. It took three decades and dozens of hopeful letters to get a foot in the door, and even then, it closed at the final step. CONTENTS: 1. What is a Critical Introduction to Social Media? 1 I. I had wanted to live in peace with my wife and our children and we had planned our future and the future of our children together, but they destroyed our dreams and our plans, they did not let us live . . . Twelve years I have been unable to see my children, not out of choice, but because I was denied the ability to see them, and without reason. A new crop of global super-rich is pouring into the United States, changing the economic landscape from Manhattan to Los Angeles. They’re driving up the price of real estate, pushing out the middle class and going on buying binges that would make Gilded Age robber barons blush. First they
want the hotel room -- perhaps the storied, $15,000-anight penthouse at the Fairmont San Francisco, where guests receive honey made by the Fairmont’s own honeybees. JFK was rumored to tryst there with Marilyn Monroe. Next they want the shopping spree, snapping up million-dollar diamond Chanel watches and $1,000per-ounce perfume. Then they want to buy a home in their favorite playground -maybe a $90 million pad at Manhattan’s behemoth One57, where they can pay negligible taxes yet enjoy the full menu of New York City services. For the new ultrawealthy, ordinary toys will not do. Once upon a time, owning a super-charged sports car was a symbol of wealth to a certain breed of balding Floridian. But today’s young global gazillionaires require something with a little more flash, like a gold-plated Lamborghini, which costs $7.5 million and even has its own Twitter feed. Brett David, the CEO of Lamborghini Miami, has been selling top-dollar cars for a long time. But even he is shocked at the number of items he’s selling to overseas buyers, from Argentines and Venezuelans to a new crop of Russian and Chinese shoppers. A task of the day is solidarity. And the new economy that is emerging to replace predatory capitalism is a solidarity economy, which we call economic democracy. In a democratized economy, people have more input into decisions about the economy and more benefit from it as well. This is an economic model that will solve the crises of our era and prevent them from returning. The new economy is taking shape on a number of different levels from communities that are putting democratic economic institutions in place to students who are recreating their economic curriculum to economists who are working together to define the new economy more concretely. The bottom layer has circumferences of more than forty-eight metres, the second layer forty meters and the third layer thirty-two metres, while the pagoda stands more than twelve meters high. The platform beside the pagoda was one of the central temple structures, and in its side walls were carved niches housing Buddha figurines. But now there arent any figures left, and even the niches themselves are barely invisible. The employees at the Brooklake Road Northeast facility came across the craniums inside a cardboard box slated for recycling, said the Marion County Sheriff ’s Office. The ghastly find brought operations at the plant to a screeching halt. An investigation conducted by deputies and the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office traced the morbid treasure back to Frank Shriver, a North Bend man who died in 1991, said Sgt. Chris Baldridge, a sheriff ’s spokesman. Shriver scored the skulls while gold prospecting in the Philippines before World War II, said the man’s family. They were later passed on to Shriver’s son, who lived in Salem. But the skulls were accidentally tossed after the younger Shriver died, Baldridge said. They are now in the hands of the state’s medical examiner. Urgent payment receipt, Hereby you are notified that you have unpaid utility bills and your debt amounts to $432 for February 3, 2014. Kaylan Joseph Cureton, 25, of Richmond, Virginia, was sentenced today to four years in prison on federal charges of traveling interstate to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor and possession of child pornography, announced U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen, Jr.; Valerie Parlave, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington
Field Office; and Cathy L. Lanier, Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). Cureton pled guilty in August 2012 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He was sentenced by the Honorable Robert L. Wilkins. Upon completion of his prison term, Cureton will be required to serve six months of home confinement. He also will be placed on 10 years of supervised release and must register as a sex offender for 15 years. According to the government’s evidence, on May 24, 2012, Cureton contacted an undercover officer with the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force who had entered a social networking site. Over the next several days, Cureton engaged in online e-mail, instant message, text message, and telephone conversations with the undercover officer, whom Cureton believed was the father of an underaged child. During this period of time, Cureton arranged with the undercover officer to meet for the purpose of engaging in sexual acts with the child. He traveled from Richmond to a pre-arranged meeting place in Washington, D.C., where he was arrested. Upon execution of a search warrant on Cureton’s residence, members of the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force recovered a USB drive containing numerous videos of child pornography. Around the world, from Ethiopia to Indonesia and Peru, the World Bank finds itself embroiled in controversies surrounding human rights violations, environmental destruction, and social discord. NGOs for years have been calling for sweeping reforms at the World Bank, but to no avail. It’s time to recognize that the World Bank is an institution incapable of reform, and is indeed unworthy of reform efforts. The only humane option is to focus efforts to close the bank immediately and to start building alternative financial institutions that promote local, communityled development projects guided by the principals of sustainability and solidarity rather than free market doctrine. United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg announced that Michael Partain, 44, was sentenced in federal court in Omaha for distributing child pornography. The Honorable Lyle E. Strom, Senior District Court Judge, sentenced Partain to seven years in prison. There is no parole in the federal system. After his release from prison, Partain will be on supervised release for five years and will be required to register as a sex offender. On two separate occasions, Partain distributed child pornography videos to agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation acting in an undercover capacity. Some of these videos involved victims under 5 years of age. On August 29, 2012, agents assigned to the Omaha FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force executed a search warrant at Partain’s residence. The agents recovered 109 files of child pornography. Twenty-seven videos involved a victim under the age of 5. Sixty-one videos involved

They’ve been demanding an increase from around $400 a month for the starting wage to a starting wage of about USD 1,100. And the big platinum companies don’t, obviously, want to give that kind of concession to some 70,000 workers now on strike. And the price of platinum’s gone up because of the anticipated supply constraint, since South Africa supplies 80 percent of the world market. The share prices of the companies have gone up, but the South African economy is crashing. Our currency, along with, I suppose, the Argentine peso, really lead the fragile five economies. Orangutans are some of our most intelligent, thoughtful relatives -their name means “person of the forest” in Malay. They spend 90% of their time roaming and climbing trees (the males can stretch their arms up to 7 feet!) ^^ even sleeping high up in nests of leafy branches, and they use big leaves as umbrellas when it rains. So, as demand for palm oil skyrockets and companies rush to clear more and more land, their homes are literally falling like dominoes. Allowing the world’s orangutans to die out would mean not only losing one of the planet’s most majestic creatures forever, but would also change the entire ecosystem of the rainforests they inhabit. As they roam the forest eating fruit, orangutans scatter the seeds far and wide, helping the entire forest stay healthy and robust. The world’s markets are having a wobble. More than $3 trillion has been wiped off global share prices since the
start of January. Investors’ gloom is overdone. A handful of disappointing numbers does not mean that America’s underlying recovery is stalling. China’s economy is slowing, but the odds of a sudden slump remain low. Homer in “The Iliad” showed his understanding of war. His heroes are not pleasant men. They are vain, imperial, filled with rage and violence. And Homer’s central character in “The Odyssey,” Odysseus, in his journey home from war must learn to shed his “hero’s heart,” to strip from himself the military attributes that served him in war but threaten to doom him off the battlefield. The qualities that serve us in war defeat us in peace. Most institutions have a propensity to promote mediocrities, those whose primary strengths are knowing where power lies, being subservient and obsequious to the centers of power and never letting morality get in the way of one’s career. The military is the worst in this respect. In the military, whether at the Paris Island boot camp or West Point, you are trained not to think but to obey. What amazes about the military is how stupid and bovine its senior officers are. Those with brains and the willingness to use them seem to be pushed out long before they can rise to the senior-officer ranks. Many Army generals lack the most rudimentary creativity and independence of thought but nearly always saw the press, as well as an informed public, as impinging on their love oforder, regimentation, unwavering obedience to authority and single-minded use of force to solve complex problems. Over 600+ native women in Canada are reported missing or murdered in the last 20 years. Many vanished without a trace with inadequate inquiry into their disappearance or killing paid by the media, the general public, politicians and even law enforcement. This is a travesty of justice. The bylaws establish the procedure by which GO::DH shall be governed in the future. They call for the election of an 8 member executive, from which a chair shall be chosen. The executive will also be responsible for appointing all officers. Normally, the executive will be elected to staggered two year terms, with half the executive up for election each year. For the first year, all positions on the executive are open: half the vacancies will be for a one year (renewable) term, the other half for a two year (renewable) term. Normally, the nominations and elections will occur in January. For a variety of reasons, not least of which was the need to circulate the bylaws for comment, we are one month late this year. A 22-yearold Wood County man who solicited and received sexually explicit images of a child pleaded guilty today. Jon Seth Davisson pleaded guilty in federal court in Huntington before Chief United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers to receiving child pornography. Davisson faces a mandatory minimum of five years and up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on May 12, 2014. In August 2013, Davisson exchanged text messages with a 13-year-old Cabell County child and persuaded the child to take and send sexually explicit photographs to Davisson. At the time Davisson received these photographs, he was a U.S. Army private stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. Davisson had been acquainted with the child for several years and was aware of the age of the child at the time he requested that the images be taken and sent. The Cabell County Sheriff ’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Rada is in
charge of the prosecution. This case is being brought as part of U.S. Attorney Goodwin’s ongoing initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse in the Southern District of West Virginia. After a year of attacks on whistleblowers and digital journalists and revelations about mass surveillance, the United States plunged 13 spots in the group’s global press freedom rankings to number 46. Reporters Without Borders writes that the U.S. faced one of the most significant declines in the world last year. Even the United Kingdom, whose sustained campaign to criminalize the Guardian^^s reporters and intimidate journalists has made headlines around the world, dropped only three spots, to number 33. The U.S. fell as many spots as Paraguay, where the pressure on journalists to censor themselves keeps on mounting. Citing the Justice Department’s aggressive prosecution of whistleblowers, including its secret seizure of Associated Press phone records, the authors write that freedom of information is too often sacrificed to an overly broad and abusive interpretation of national security needs, marking a disturbing retreat from democratic practices. A federal judge has sentenced a Pikeville man to 30 years in federal prison for producing videos of himself engaged in sexually explicit conduct with a small child. On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Amul Thapar sentenced 63year-old David Campbell for producing child pornography. The 30-year sentence is the maximum punishment allowed under the statute. Under federal law, Campbell will have to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence. According to court documents, from March 2012 until March 26, 2013, Campbell produced sexually explicit videos of himself with the victim and then distributed them to others over the Internet. Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and Perrye K. Turner, Special Agent in Charge, FBI, jointly announced the sentence. The investigation was conducted by the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Parman prosecuted this case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office on behalf of the federal government. “Artists as historians offer rare insights. Occupying a space of in-between, artistic works that pull on archival research, materials, and historic sites make no attempt at recognizing or replicating a past as it ‘really was.’ (A losing game at any rate.) Contemporary artistic historical representations eschew the removed objectivity and unwavering fidelity of the traditional historian. But, while the artist-historian’s work avoids an objective communication of historical fact, it also differs slightly from regular artistic production. In many ways artists using archival and historical material reverse the expected artistic process: molding memory from matter, they rifle through archives and sites until something (not entirely) new has been forged. They reach; they recast.” The world has experienced a global crisis of capitalism that started in 2008 and is continuing until now. It has been accompanied by a crisis of the state and a general crisis of legitimation of dominant ideologies such as neoliberalism. Responses to the crisis have been variegated and have included austerity measures of the state that have hit the weakest, an increased presence of progressive protests, revolutions and strikes that have made use of digital, social and traditional media in various ways, the rise of far-right movements and parties in many parts of Europe and other parts of the world, the Greek state’s closing down of public service broadcaster ERT and increased commercial pressure on public service broadcasting in general, new debates about how to strengthen public service media, increased socio-economic and class inequality in many parts of the world and at a global level, precarious forms of work in general and in the media and cultural industries in particular, the emergence of new media reform movements, an extension and intensification of the crisis of newspapers and the print media, an increasing shift of advertising budgets to targeted ads on the Internet and along with this development the rise of commercial “social media” platforms, Edward Snowden’s revelations about the existence of a global surveillance-industrial complex that operates a communications surveillance system called “Prism” that involves the NSA and media companies such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo!, AOL, Skype, Apple and Paltalk; discussions about the power and freedom of the press in light of the Levenson inquiry, shifting geographies of the political and
media landscape that have to do with the economic rise of countries such as China and India. A stunning catalog of torture and the widespread abuse of even the weakest of North Koreans reveal a portrait of a brutal state “that does not have any parallel in the contemporary world,” a United Nations panel reported Monday. North Korean leaders employ murder, torture, slavery, sexual violence, mass starvation and other abuses as tools to prop up the state and terrorize “the population into submission,” the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights (COI) in North Korea said in its report The commission said it would refer its findings to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for possible prosecution. It also sent a letter warning North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that he could face prosecution for crimes against humanity, and said other options include establishing of an ad hoc tribunal by the United Nations. The oldest and largest private museum in Washington, the financially troubled Corcoran Gallery of Art, will be taken over by the governmentbacked National Gallery of Art under a proposal announced Wednesday. In a joint statement, the two cultural institutions said they were in talks that envision the National Gallery of Art assuming initial responsibility for the Corcoran’s priceless collection of some 17,000 works of art. The museum’s 19th century premises just steps from the White House -and in need of major renovations -- would meanwhile go to George Washington University, which would also take over the Corcoran College of Art and Design. The proposal aims to keep the Corcoran open to the public and its collection -- featuring works by Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Edward Hopper and Willem de Kooning -- in the US capital. “The Corcoran’s great cultural, educational and civic resources that are at the heart of this city will not only remain in Washington but will become stronger. With the exhibition Feuerbach’s Muses Lagerfeld’s Models the Hamburger Kunsthalle is presenting an unusual double exhibition on beauty, eroticism and the adoration of muses and models that brings together paintings by Anselm Feuerbach and hitherto unseen photographs by Karl Lagerfeld. In a similar way both
Feuerbach and Lagerfeld seek an actualisation of an ideal of timeless beauty founded in the ancient world. The exhibition examines the cult of beauty, which stylises the model to an icon. Over forty works by Feuerbach, most of them from the years 186070, will be on show. They are loans from the Feuerbachhaus Speyer and from numerous German, Swiss and Austrian museums and private collections. Karl Lagerfeld has created a series of around sixty bl a c k- a nd -wh ite photographs especially for the exhibition. Mostly in large formats, they have been printed in a complex process onto silver- and goldcoloured. Often acoustic space is ignored in the construction of a public space, yet the negative impact this has does not seem to get many complaints. People rarely require more quality of the sonic world, because the average consumer does not have the necessary references to change this state of affairs. We know that the prevalence of noise or sounds that do not convey any social significance and are a disturbance of the quality of life, reduces the ability to identify with the place we inhabit. It is therefore urgent to think about the acoustical problems societies are facing today and integrate that thinking in urban planning, architecture and management of public space, because the idea we have of ourselves, our personal awareness and the relationships we build in the external world, are inextricably linked to a space. We all exist somewhere. And personal identity also relates to this. Police officers in Michigan involved in the fatal shooting of a homeless man during a confrontation over stolen coffee will not
charges. Authorities, including the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI, announced Tuesday, February 25 that there was not significant enough evidence to charge the six Saginaw police officers with manslaughter. “After a thorough investigation, federal authorities have determined that this tragic event does not present sufficient evidence of willful misconduct to lead a federal criminal prosecution of the police officers involved,” the agencies said in a joint statement. The incident took place on the afternoon of July 1, 2012, when the police were called to investigate a report that 49-year-old Milton Hall, a homeless Saginaw man with a known history of mental illness, had stolen a cup of coffee from a convenience store. After arriving to the scene, officers found Hall armed with a pocket knife. It was during the confrontation in a parking lot that police fired their weapons 47 times at Hall, hitting him 11 times and fatally wounding him. Hall’s mother has stated that her son’s death amounted to an “execution by firing squad,” and filed a wrongful death suit in September against the city and the nine officers involved in the case. A new project by Dutch artist Jan Huijben is called secret.rar. It’s a rather elaborate but, clearly, highly secure way to store a file. Jan archived a file and encrypted it using a 64 cha r ac ter long password. Another 64-char password was then used on the USB stick which it was copied to. A desktop PC would take 58 58 quinquatrigintillion years to crack it. Ameobas and other parasites are commonly in tap and well water, so beware of where you buy your drinks and what your ice looks like. A good rule of thumb is that if the ice is molded (i.e. round cylinders with a hole in the middle, or perfect squares) it is usually purified water bought from a store and therefore safe to have in your drink. If it looks like it has been broken apart with an ice pick it’s suspect. In Puerto La Libertad, many commodores (local restaurants often operating out of someone’s house) get their ice from the fishing co-op on the beachfront street. When you see what else that ice comes in contact with, you will change your mind about drinks with chipped ice in them! The situation is even more worrying in the US. In March 2013, the Standard & Poor 500 stock market index reached the highest ever level, surpassing the 2007 peak (which was higher than the peak during the dotcom boom), despite the fact that the
country’s per capita income had not yet recovered to its 2007 level. Since then, the index has risen about 20%, although the US per capita income has not increased even by 2% during the same period. This is definitely the biggest stock market bubble in modern history. Even more extraordinary than the inflated prices is that, unlike in the two previous share price booms, no one is offering a plausible narrative explaining why the evidently unsustainable levels of share prices are actually justified. Emperor penguins are the most ice-dependent of all penguins, and the warming seas and melting and shifting ice are making it increasingly difficult for them to raise their young and forage for food. If this trend continues, this and several other colonies of emperor penguins throughout Antarctica will face serious threats to their survival. Violent land grabs in Ethiopia’s Lower Omo Valley are forcibly evicting tribes and preventing them from producing food. This is leaving thousands of people hungry and waiting to die - experts are predicting a humanitarian crisis if the evictions aren’t stopped now. Rape, beatings, torture, and arbitrary arrests - these intimidation tactics have reportedly been used against those who resist resettlement. Tribal lands are being cleared to make way for vast cotton, palm oil and sugar cane fields. Cattle are being confiscated, food stores destroyed, and communities ordered to abandon their homes and move into designated resettlement camps. But despite its ubiquity -- and, in fact, sometimes precisely because of its ubiquity -- human beings perpetually struggle to come to terms with it, whether individually or collectively. In academia, the idea of evil has provoked widespread reflection in the humanities and beyond. Whether the medium is philosophical treatise, theological doctrine, historical analysis, literary expression or something else besides, examining the theme of evil is a necessary aspect of exploring representations of humanity. This conference is intended to bring together thinkers from a variety of disciplines and traditions, in order to illuminate this shared feature of human experience and academic reflection. It seeks to provoke dialogue btween heterogeneous approaches to the issue, from attempts at definition in moral philosophy to those modern philosophers who seek to go beyond evil, to literary, theological, and historical approaches. Hundreds of Chinese art lovers lined up at a Shanghai shopping mall Saturday to see the works of French Impressionist Claude Monet, as the country’s biggest ever exhibition of his paintings opened. The 40 Monet works drawn from the private Marmottan Monet Museum in Paris are arranged in chronological order and include some from his emblematic “Water Lilies” series. Organisers hope between 200,000 and 300,000 people will view the three-month show, but will limit daily visitors to 3,000 over security concerns. “I’ve heard a lot about Monet’s works, and I couldn’t wait to see them with
my own eyes,” said visitor Regina Luo. The exhibition is being mounted in the basement of Shanghai’s K11 Art Mall, a collection of designer boutiques and coffee shops interspersed with displays of art. Monet, who died in 1926, was one of the founders of Impressionism, and his giant “Water Lilies” paintings are some of the most distinctive works of the 20th century. K11 is located in the heart of the city. Hello. I am open for the man who is ready to start serious relationship with me. I do not want to be lonely and I already want to have a family. If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under. You’re not supposed to be so blind with patriotism that you can’t face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who says it. Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind. We, the People, recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom which only asks what’s in it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defense. One of the great attractions of patriotism - it fulfills our worst wishes. In the person of our nation we are able, vicariously, to bully and cheat. Bully and cheat, what’s more, with a feeling that we are profoundly virtuous. Can anything be stupider than that a man has the right to kill me because he lives on the other side of a river and his ruler has a quarrel with mine, though I have not quarrelled with him? Our government has kept us in a perpetual state of fear - kept us in a continuous stampede of patriotic fervor - with the cry of grave national emergency. The highest patriotism is not a blind acceptance of official policy, but a love of one’s country deep enough to call her to a higherplain. On January 13, 1931, the Society of Beaux-Arts Architects held a ball at the Hotel Astor in New York City. According to an advertisement for the event, anyone who paid $15 per ticket (big money during the Depression) could seea “hilarious modern art exhibition” and things”modernistic, futuristic, cubistic, altruistic, mystic, architistic and feministic.” Attendees also got to witnessmore than 20 famous architects dressed as buildings they had designed, some of them now fixtures of the New York City skyline. The 2014 list of Enemies of the Internet includes “surveillance dealerships” - the three arms trade fairs known as ISS World, Technology Against Crime and Milipol. These forums bring companies specializing in communications interception or online content blocking together with government officials from countries such as Iran, China and Bahrain. Here again, the contradictory behaviour of western democracies should be noted. France hosted two of these forums in 2013 - TAC and Milipol. At the same time, it issued a notice in December 2013 requiring French companies that export surveillance products outside the Europe Union to obtain permission from the General Directorate for Competition, Industry and Services (DGCIS). The censorship and surveillance carried out by the Enemies of the Internet would not be possible without the tools developed by the private sector companies to be found at these trade fairs. Ethiopia’s Information Network Security Agency has tracked down journalists in the United States thanks to spyware provided by Hacking Team, an Italian company that Reporters Without Borders designated as an Enemy of the Internet in 2013. Even the NSA has used the services of Vupen, a French company that specializes in identifying and exploiting security flaws. Private-sector companies are not the only suppliers of surveillance technology to governments that are Enemies of the Internet. Russia has exported its SORM surveillance system to its close neighbours. In Belarus, Decree No. 60 on “measures for improving use of the national Internet network” forces Internet Service Providers to install SORM. China has begun assisting Iran’s uphill efforts to create a Halal Internet - a national Internet that would be disconnected from the World Wide Web and under the government’s complete control. An expert in information control ever since building its Electronic Great Wall, China is advising Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, the Supreme Council for Cyberspace and the Working Group for Identifying Criminal Content. Deputy information minister Nasrolah Jahangiri announced this during a recent visit by a delegation from China’s State Council Information Office. China’s pedagogic zeal has not stopped there. The Zambian Watchdog
website reported in February 2013 that the Zambian government is working with China to install an Internet surveillance network. The blocking of the Zambian Watchdog and Zambia Reports websites in June and July 2013 showed that Zambia wants to be able control online information. China is also represented in Uzbekistan by ZTE, a Chinese company that opened an office there in 2003 and has since become the country’s main supplier of modems and routers. She accompanied her boyfriend’s sister, known by the street name “Baby” on Jersey City’s Tonnelle Avenue, Route 1 and Route 9, where there is a string of cheap motels. Pagano, who is white, wore a short, shimmering gold skirt and adopted the name “Gucci.” Prostitutes on Tonnelle Avenue, which is close to the Holland Tunnel, connecting Jersey City and Manhattan, made $50 for oral sex and $100 for vaginal intercourse, “but if it goes any longer than 10 minutes you’re charging them more.” An hour cost $250 and a full night cost $1,500. To the Wall Street traders, business executives and bankers who are the area prostitutes’ main customers, money never seemed to be an issue. Their wallets were stuffed with cash. On her first night Pagano hailed men headed home to the suburbs from New York City but then burst into tears or fought them off once she was inside the cars. Peter Kraska, a professor at Eastern Kentucky Univer sit y ’s School of Justice Studies, estimates that SWAT teams were deployed about 3,000 times in 1980 but are now used around 50,000 times a year. Some cities use them for routine patrols in highcrime areas. Baltimore and Dallas have used them to break up poker games. In 2010 New Haven, Connecticut sent a SWAT team to a bar suspected of serving under-age drinkers. That same year heavily-armed police raided barber shops around Orlando, Florida; they said they were hunting for guns and drugs but ended up arresting 34 people for “barbering without a licence”. Maricopa County, Arizona sent a SWAT team into the living room of Jesus Llovera, who was suspected of organising cockfights. Police rolled a tank into Mr Llovera’s yard and killed more than 100 of his birds, as well as his dog. According to Mr Kraska, most SWAT deployments are not in response to violent, life-threatening crimes, but to serve drug-related warrants in private homes. When it comes to reproduction, most living things can be classified along a scale. Ontario residents have been kept in the dark, but Canada’s most populous province is about to become an unlikely and international battleground. After all, how many times does the Great White North threaten the drinking water of more than 40 million people, including their neighbours in America? Legislators from south of the border have already taken issue with plans for a deep geologic repository. Less than a mile from the shores of Lake Huron, Bruce Power intends to store 200,000 cubic meters of nuclear waste within the natural rock formation. Senators and congressmen shared their dissent with the Canadian government, but the fed responded by sending police to the homes of eco protesters, in what some would call an act of intimidation. It will take at least 300 years for the nuclear waste to decay, to a point that radioactive catastrophes
are not a threat to human populations. This Kincardine, Ontario location was also chosen for its low seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of water and soil contamination by earthquake. The idea of having to navigate cockroaches, mice, no heat and sexual predators before you even leave for school is not something any child should go through. Yet, this is the daily life for hundreds of children living in two shelters in New York City and Brooklyn. They are part of the more than 22,000 children that make up New York City’s homeless population. Now, after more than a decade of repeated citations for deplorable conditions, more than 400 children and their families are being moved from the city-owned facilities -- all because of a determined 12-year-old girl. Chanel couldn’t afford the luxury of buying water in a bottle. When the water with the fancy name started arriving in the bodegas of her Brooklyn neighborhood, she felt that it represented a certain status in life she could never imagine. When her first child was born a short time later, she gave her the name Dasani, with the hope it would give her a chance in life. I can send out 400K faxes or voicemail drops for $499 per month. Daniel Hosier, 34, Cherryvale, Kansas, is charged with one count of distributing child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography. The crimes are alleged to have occurred in March and July 2013 in Montgomery, Kansas. If convicted, he faces a penalty of not less than five years and not more than 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 on the distribution counts and a maximum penalty of 10 years and a fine up to $250,000 on the possession count. On the heels of the Jonathan Yeo Portraits exhibition at the London National Portrait Gallery, Christie’s will offer at auction the portrait of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl shot by the Taliban for courageously campaigning for girls’ education. Generously offered by the artist, the painting, estimated $60,00080,000, will be sold during the day sale of Post -War and Contemporary Art, to benefit the Malala Fund, a charity set up by Malala to support the fight for girls’ right to education. Called the “Bravest Girl in the World” by President Barack Obama, she recently awarded the International Children’s Peace Prize for her inspirational work and courage. I was honoured that Jonathan asked to paint me for his exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery and am grateful that Christie’s has agreed to auction the portrait to help girls go to school around the world. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Park was completed in 1955 following a competition to find a design in 1949. It was designed by Kenzo Tange, and brought him to international recognition. The State of Texas is growing thirstier with each and every passing day, as drought conditions continue to dry up the land. According to a new drought report from the Texas Water Development Board, the Lone Star State is now experienc-
ing “worse” drought conditions in over two-thirds of the Texas territory. Emergency preparations are already being considered, including ocean water desalination efforts.Four-month dry period may bring Dust Bowl-like conditions for TexansA four-month dry period lasting from December through March has plagued most of the state. Climatologists have even mentioned that Dust Bowl-like conditions may be on the horizon if spring doesn’t bring much-needed rain. As supporters looked on, approximately 130 people held at the Northwest Detention Center were taken from the facility this morning as part of its weekly deportation regime. At least five hunger strikers were among those deported, according to an attorney who visited the facility on Sunday. A hunger
strike supporter holding a vigil outside the center observed two buses leaving at 3 a.m. under cover of darkness. Supporters who arrived at dawn to offer witness to the deportations watched six more vehicles, marked “GEO Transport,” (five buses and a van) leaving the center. In what has become a new tactic since the February 24th action that stopped 120 deportations, the buses themselves were used to block supporters from seeing people loaded in chains. Despite these efforts, supporters lined the sidewalk as the buses pulled out, making eye contact with those inside the buses, and chanting, “You are not alone!” and “The struggle continues!” Hunger striker Salvador Chavez Salazar, who first arrived in the U.S. at the age of 15, was among those deported this morning. The 29-yearold father of two U.S. citizen children was held in the detention center for two and a half months following a DUI arrest. In a recording made on the eve of his deportation (audio and translation available upon request), he described his fifteen years of labor in the U.S., which included landscaping, picking cherries, onions, and apples, and gathering forest items in the forests outside his Aberdeen, WA home. He explained why he participated in both waves of the hunger strike despite knowing he would most likely be deported, stating, “It is an injustice for all of us who are locked up in here,” and expressing hope that his actions would benefit future detainees. He described facing deportation with only the clothes on his back, despite having put in a request to ICE for his family to bring him a suitcase with fifteen days notice. He also described how the facility continues to profit even after deportations, explaining that the money on detainees’ phone accounts is not returned to them. His greatest grief at leaving his home was for the harm to his 4year-old US-citizen daughters: “Deportations, they affect the children the most, that’s the truth. Almost everyone who is here, all of the people here are fathers with families.” This weekly round of deportations at the NWDC comes as Ramon Mendoza Pascual and J. Cipriano Rios Alegria continue their hunger strike in medical isolation, under solitary confinement sentences. The link between their peaceful protest and their confinement became even clearer last
when Mr. Mendoza was asked if he would end his hunger strike in exchange for being returned to the general population. He declined. He has now been on hunger strike for 35 out of the last 39 days, protesting the on-going deportations and the deplorable detention center conditions. Three men were charged Monday in New York in connection with a $33 million scam over two decades making and selling paintings purportedly by world-famous artists but which were in fact fakes. Among the bogus works were pieces supposedly by Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock and sold to unsuspecting collectors for tens of millions of dollars. Among the trio was Chinese painter Pei Shen Qian, 75, who allegedly made the forgeries and is believed to have fled to China. Among other allegations, he is charged with lying to FBI agents investigating the fraud. Brothers Jesus Angel Bergantinos Diaz, 65, and Jose Carlos Bergantinos Diaz, 58, were arrested last week in Spain, said federal prosecutors. Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara said: “Today’s charges paint a picture of perpetual lies and greed. As alleged, the defendants tricked victims into paying more than $33 million for wor t h le ss paintings which they fabricated in the names of world-famous artists. Given the date, the Burrowing Owl that we (Adrian, Hendrik, Oscar, Jamie and I) found on Sunday was probably a migrant. It wasn’t clarified in Oscar’s post, but we flushed the owl from the edge of a roadside ditch after dark (we saw it in the headlights). Driving roads in good habitat after dark might be a good strategy for finding Burrowing Owls in the Willamette Valley; I know that’s a good way to see them east of the Cascades. Cheers, Christopher Hinkle hey are you still looking? I got your email just now and I haven’t been able to find anyone yet cause I keep getting all these creeps and weird replies. The rushing up of the Earth from below as we leap into the unknown is a strong pervasive force. The comings and goings of objects, the rhizomatic fever of life - of memories and of perception - is the stuff of both nature and the machine but also the stuff of change - of a compelling need to move forward, at pace. Since the millennium we have been moving away in linear time
from the trauma of the 20th century, history accumulating behind us as we hurtle towards an undefined future. Yet there also seems to be a reductive velocity at work, the future appears to be expanding only in our mind’s eye - in the stories we tell ourselves, in the frames of the cinematic moment and the pixels of our most fantastic dreaming. If we stand still long enough the hyper-reality becomes apparent. Information is expanding at an exponential rate -- images, sound and text -- authoring a new present-future space of mobility, of interconnectedness and most of all of rapid accelerating change. Equal parts chaos and perfection - of truth and of fiction - a dark and light exposure. It is the making of us, this velocity of things. It is both our return to Earth and our mastery of its physics. Our identity and our collective history is fast becoming a vast data repository of machine vision - a rapid prototyping of our future selves. Financial transactions, personal communications, intimate moments exist inside this simulation of machine speed. Artificial intelligence observes, correlates, measures and makes split second decisions on our behalf. Notions of surveillance, fears for our privacy, the dilution of our identity and the voyeuristic connotations of relational databases make up the machine’s vision of us and our world. Can we keep apace of these algorithmic patterns? Can we author new vistas, new dreamscapes, new directions? Meanwhile, history keeps up a steady persistent pace: the image loops, the cogs turn, the velocity increases, and the hyper-real maintains its seductive play. Climate change is all set to melt Antarctica Ice Basin. This may cause water level to rise by 13 ft. A new report on climate change has shocked the w o r l d . There is no doubt that all reports on climate change released in recent years are damning, but this is an eye opener. Merely weeks after the publication of United Nations climate panels report, another report says that climate change may cause sea levels rise by as much as 13 feet. It says that climate change will have so much adverse impact on Antarctica that a huge Antarctica ice basin will melt. The report says that this melt ice basin in Antarctica will cause the water level to go up by a massive 13 feet. It further says that part of East Antarctica is vulnerable to a thaw that could trigger an unstoppable slide of ice into the ocean and raise sea levels. According to this report, the Wilkes Basin in East Antarctica, stretching more than 1,000 km inland, has enough ice to raise sea levels by 10 to 13 feet (3 to 4 meters) if it were to melt as an effect of climate change. An RCMP project aimed at tallying the number of missing and murdered Indigenous women has uncovered over 1,000 cases. The RCMP was able to determine over a 1,000 cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women with the help other police forces across the country, according to a per-
son with knowledge of the project, who asked not to be named because they’re not the official spokesperson on the project. As part of this project, the RCMP reached out to over 200 police forces across the country to get a peek in their files to compile their statistics. The project was complete and the report’s release is being held up by the federal ministry of public safety Canada and was supposed to come out March 31. However, RCMP Aboriginal policing Supt. Tyler Bates denied a report was done when contacted on his cellphone Wednesday afternoon but not the tally. “There is no report as of yet that has been disseminated,” said Bates. “There will be a publicly available document down the road.” When asked about the tally of over 1,000 Bates said he couldn’t confirm or deny any number. Prism takes us back to the heyday of disco, to roller skating under the neon lights and dancing the night away. The multilinear geometric display sans is inspired by Rudolf Koch’s 1931 sketches for Prisma and the proportions of Herb Lubalin’s Avant Garde from 1970. The different weights are far from conventional; while the character shapes remain identical, it is the individual lines making up the letters that grow bolder. Elsa is a very readable sans serif, ideally suited for onscreen reading. With solid, open shapes and a large x-height it remains legible in even the smallest sizes. Yet that doesn’t mean it is a plain typeface. On the contrary, the slightly square letterforms and some surprising design details add liveliness and sparkle to text set in Elsa. A well-rounded, versatile solution for demanding conditions. Xavier Dupre’s Mislab is a break from the common displayoriented slab serif. Its fit is just loose enough, and its serifs just long enough to also enable comfortable text setting. At larger sizes, Mislab projects strength with visual language made up of taut, squared curves, low stroke contrast, high shoulders, and abrupt tapers at the joins. The family covers three widths, normal, Narrow, and Compact, in nine weights ranging from Hairline to Black. Companion italics accompany the weights most suited to text, Regular to Black. Your eyes do not deceive you. This fresh Renaissance Roman leans forward ever so modestly, not more than two degrees. In creating Essay Text, Ellmer Stefan goes back to the earliest French Renaissance types for source material, returning with a historically informed work of obvious contemporary appeal. Again, differing from the norm only by two or three degrees is the face’s italic, which, like its archetypes, sets blocks of text fine on its own. Adding to Letters from Sweden’s Fabrik series is Erik Moberg’s original typeface, Ferry, based on sturdy, late 19th/early 20th century Stockholm steamship lettering. The strong alphabet grew out of just nine reference letters. Ferry includes support for Central European languages as well as Cyrillic and Greek scripts, all standard. In Showcase, designers Daniel Hernandez and Paula Nazal Selaive create a cute and fun set of sans, slab and script, made for a range of display uses such as packaging, posters, cards and window dressing. Tie all three lettering styles together with the included sets of mini caps and ornaments. Up close, Ryoichi Tsunekawa’s Compasse feels like a DIN with a slightly warmer complexion. At text sizes, its regular weight becomes its own thing, its legibility aided by its wide fit, the greatness of its counters and regularity of rhythm. Compasse comes in 12 styles ranging six weights, each with companion ital-
ic. Expanding on his recently released Sofia Family, Olivier Gourvat’s Sofia Soft rounds the corners on the family’s four interior weights ranging from Light to Bold. The overall result brings to mind (as nearly any rounded geometric sans does) the image of Futura’s popular rounded variant, VAG Rounded, but this one sets a little wider, quite a bit more generously spaced, and in terms of individual glyph shapes, quite a bit rounder. Arlt Lanzallamas is what you could call a living typeface. It is the latest addition to the award-winning, 26member type family Arlt, which comprises fonts for text, for display, for decorative use, and a set of seven carefully destroyed fonts: Arlt 7 Locos. Arlt Lanzallamas is the dynamic version that switches between those while you’re typing, continually altering the appearance of the text. Use it to surprise and delight your readers. The casual sans High Jinkies sound-effects font is jaunty, flaunty and up to no good! It’s a child born of fairly odd parents and always looking for the good kind of trouble. It’ll get you out of the red and into the pink like a panther pawning diamonds! Comicraft’s John Roshell has slipped his hands into the gloves of the Phantom Font Finagler, and there are hijinks ahead to be sure! Secca Soft further expands the Secca type family by adding four upright weights with soft corners to the compact, versatile sans serif. Just like its cousin with angled covers, Secca Soft is faithful to the origins of early German grotesque type designs yet re-imagined for the needs of contemporary typography. U.S. District Judge John E. Steele today sentenced Alan Robert Johnson (35) to 50 years in federal prison and Jennifer A. Sparks (39) to 30 years in federal prison for production of child pornography. They were both ordered to serve a lifetime of supervision after their release from prison. The court ordered the couple to forfeit numerous cell phones, several thumb drives, a Micro SD card, a laptop computer, and a Fuji FinePix camera, which were found to contain child pornography. Sparks pleaded guilty on January 27, 2014, and Johnson pleaded guilty on January 28, 2014. According to court documents, on or about May 12, 2012, in Lee County, Florida, Johnson and his girlfriend Sparks knowingly used a 4-year-old girl to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing child pornography. On June 4, 2012, a private citizen turned the cell phone that Johnson and Sparks had used to produce the child pornography over to law enforcement. The cell phone had been found in a shopping cart at a Walmart in Lee County. Further investigation revealed that Johnson was a registered sex offender. A subsequent search warrant was obtained for his residence, and another cell phone that was located in the couple’s bedroom contained sexually explicit images of the minor. This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Child Exploitation Task Force, which includes the Cape Coral Police Department, with assistance from the Lee County Sheriff ’s Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Yolande G. Viacava. It is very important to understand and critic the political economy of this emerging new, and possibility of the logic it bears for building counter class(lessness)strategies. Flos IoE (E meaning Every progressive-revolutionary agency) political organising can counter the clash of titans by bringing forward real alternatives being there and developed. To apply the idea or mechanism of ‘reaching critical mass’ to manage to decrease the transaction (meaning organizational, articulational and mobilisations) costs, in order to allow the mass participation in the creation and egalitarian distribution of the ‘political change value’, as distributed societal power, can bring the change before this clash explode. gence movement in iyiniwi-ministik, the People’s Island.* They draw on their traditional roles as protectors of the land and water to inform their work in our communities, and root themselves in their specific socio-political orders to counter colonialism and to revitalize language and culture. Rather than being defined as a struggle against patriarchal gender roles and the division of labour, Indigenous women and two-spirited people’s work combats the imposition of colonial barriers. The goal is not to attain gender equality, but rather to restore Indigenous nationhood, which includes gender equality and respect for gender fluidity. As I write this I can hear Khelsilem Rive r s (Skwxw7mesh - Kw a k w a k a ”wakw), a community organizer from Va n c o u v e r , pointing out that not all Indigenous peoples have the same traditions, and that to avoid perpetuating Pan-Indian stereotypes, we need to have honest discussions about the diversity of our traditions. This is an important point indeed, as not all Indigenous nations have the same traditions with respect to the fluidity of gender roles. Romanticizing ourselves as a collective unfortunately plays into “noble savage” stereotypes and does damage in the long run. With so many Indigenous people disconnected from their specific traditions, even so-called positive stereotypes are a form of continuing erasure. She accepted this without complaint. The Community Care
Access Centre is looking for a one-bedroom apartment in Gravenhurst for her and at a price she can afford. Rent will be about $700. She is not receiving the Income Supplement for her Old Age Security, but that is being put into effect. She has no OHIP card and has defiantly refused to apply for one, until some old lady in her church said that if she didn’t cooperate, she would end up in the insane asylum. That worked. Trouble is she doesn’t know where her birth certificate is and must apply for a replacement. Her minister took her through the Bible at the place where it says to obey the laws of the land. That worked, too. She reluctantly confessed to having $5,000 in the bank (necessary info. if she is to obtain an apartment at a low rent). Her late mother left her and another
child about $6,000 about 30 years ago. This has been gathering interest all this time. Trouble is, the mother’s will has never been probated! So that is being looked after. Myrna guesses the one-acre lot should be worth $30,000. Norene has been enjoying her newfound life in temp. lodgings in a Holiday Inn with colour TV, electric lights, hot running water and the other modern amenities she has never had. I am much relieved that the chimney fire has forced her to make these concessions to having a decent life. Living in that cluttered shack with none of the things we take for granted is over. I worried that her house would burn with her in it! Heavy rain is expected for parts of the western Gulf Coast and the Ark-La-Tex region. Some parts of Texas could experience storm-total rainfall of 4 to 5 inches through Tuesday evening. The heavy precipitation raises the threat of flash flooding for these regions. A Bangladeshi ferry with around 200 passengers on board capsized in a river near the capital Dhaka. Police have stated six bodies have been recovered but more are still missing. The M.V. Miraj-4 ferry capsized in stormy weather in the Meghna river at Rasulpur in Munshiganj district, 27 kilometres from Dhaka. The accident occurred at around 3:30 pm (0930 GMT). So far six bodies had been recovered, including that of a child, according to Oliur Rahman, a police officer at the scene. With the monsoon season setting in more weather flooding and storm related problems can be expected. A large and bright fireball accompanied by sonic boom was observed over southeastern U.S. at 13:38 UTC on May 16, 2014 (May 15, 2014, 21:38 EDT). People calling 911 described the incident as a large boom that shook the foundations of their homes.According to a statement from Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office, basketballsized meteoroid entered Earth’s atmosphere above Columbia, South Carolina, and then moved northwest at about 125 500 km/h (78 000 mph), burning up above Tennessee. It traveled a distance of 467 km (290 miles), which is quite rare for a meteor. “This fireball was not part of any meteor shower and belongs to a class of meteors called Earthgrazers. On Friday, The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that “more than 400,000 high-resolution digital images
public domain works in the Museum’s world-renowned collection may be downloaded directly from the Museum’s website for noncommercial use.” Even better, the images can be used at no charge (and without getting permission from the museum). In making this announcement, the Met joined other world-class museums in putting put large troves of digital art online. Witness the 87,000 images from the Getty in L.A., the 125,000 Dutch masterpieces from the Rijksmuseum, the 35,000 artistic images from the National Gallery, and the 57,000 works of art on Google Art Project. Brando is characterized by strong, linear forms, subtly bracketed serifs, and curves that feature a touch of dynamism. As the face increases in weight from Hairline to Black, so does its stroke contrast, from quite low to a robust, medium low. Special to the design is its handling of the italic forms, arriving at a nice balance between optically corrected obliques and a more naturally flowing italic. From the specimen: Brando is an homage to the actor Marlon Brando, whose acting style favored psychological realism over grandiose theatricality, and whose characters’ brawniness was often underpinned by an underl y i n g sensitivit y. Fresh and full of juice, Koziupa and Paul’s latest c ol l a b or a tion offers a unique take on the soft, heavy adver tising and packaging scripts of the late 1980s. The letterforms exhibit a texture and construction peculiar to Koziupa’s highly legible Romanized script models, also seen in faces such as Aventura, Malbeck, and Chocolate. It goes almost without saying that this face is made for moving enticingly packaged products from shelves to baskets and carts. One of FONTYOU’s larger group efforts, Sergio is also one of its more refined and complete families. A wood-type-inspired Latin, or wedge serif design, this display face’s wide fit and open counters make reading it from a distance possible, pleasant even. The italic lowercase differs from other recent revivals within the genre, favoring a more disruptive texture and aggressive bite. Suzee’s quick, fluid strokes and angular joins are drawn from fast, squeaky work done with felt tip marker in hand. The face lends itself naturally to advertising and editorial environments where a bit of carefree, stylized humanization is called for. Inspired by the German music Club villaWuller, Florence is an elegant casual display sans. Its elongated features are slightly irregular
with gently semi-rounded stroke endings. Rich OpenType features make breezy, straightforward text morph into elaborate typographic compositions sporting refined ligatures; titling, initial and final variations; and loopy swashes. Brutal Type is a technical sans serif typeface with a distinct, manly character. Originally based on the shapes of the DIN fonts, its design was radically reconsidered. When you look beyond the apparent simplicity of its letters, Brutal Type is original and fresh, partly because of its trimmed-off angled strokes and alternate characters that subtly shift its tone. Como is a modern, rounded sans serif with slightly wide, generous proportions. Its soft stroke endings lend it a jovial appearance. The typical capital A injects this geometric design with a zest of Bauhaus. Eight weights from Extra Light to Heavy create solid, friendly headlines and paragraphs. Uncomplicated and legible, Typonine Sans is the quintessential, contemporary humanist sans serif; neutral yet still characteristic enough for identities and logos. Its five weights, two widths, and mammoth character set make it ideal for all kinds of texts. It is a part of a larger family that also includes Typonine Sans Condensed and Typonine Sans Monospace. FP Dancer Tango[tm] is a techno-like faceted design with humanist influences. It is characterized by smooth transitions in the angular shapes. The font is surprisingly legible, even in small point sizes, allowing you to set arresting headlines and columns of text that are comfortable to read. Its condensed shapes save a lot of space. Aleksei is a typeface of tension. It marries a sturdy, no-nonsense structure with original, refined design details like asymmetric serifs that are bracketed on one side and angular on the opposite side. They gently bulge outwards, injecting some friendliness in these practical letter forms. Optimized to perform well in small sizes, the serif face reveals these little quirks in display use. When Clyde Ross was still a child, Mississippi authorities claimed his father owed $3,000 in back taxes. The elder Ross could not read. He did not have a lawyer. He did not know anyone at the local courthouse. He could not expect the police to be impartial. Effectively, the Ross family had no way to contest the claim and no protection under the law. The authorities seized the land. They seized the buggy. They took the cows, hogs, and mules. And so for the upkeep of separate but equal, the entire Ross family was reduced to sharecropping. On May 21st, in an unprecedented global event, communities on five continents took action against Chevron Corporation over the company’s track record on the environment and human rights. The communities, all affected by Chevron operations, united in a call to citizens and governments around the world to reject the Chevron brand or Chevron subsidiaries, including Texaco, until demands for redress and remediation are met. Community leaders from several countries have made a worldwide call for global day of actions in opposition to Chevron on May 21, 2014 - “International Anti-Chevron Day.” Demonstrations took place in: Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Nigeria, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Romania, and Bulgaria. The actions are taking place just days before Chevron’s annual general meeting where its CEO John Watson is under increasing pressure from shareholders for his company’s environmental record. Watson recently announced he was moving
