Sculpture Trail Themes • Animals and Wildlife
• Wooden Sculptures
• Transport
• By repeating the same animal but changing the colours and patterns it can create an effective trail that is exciting because not one sculpture is the same. These koalas were made from polyester casts as this was a cheap manufacturing process. Because they were made in mass production.
• By using wooden you are able to carve and shape the wood to create a vary of designs that could include faces or patterns. The green man and water hog were carved from a hardwood as they could easily be shaped.
• By repeating the same shape but changing how you stylise the sculpture you can create a number of different design. These buses were made from fibre glass as they was a gloss finish to the final product.
Irving Penn • Irving Penn is an artist that produces still life photographs of food that he has shaped or cut to suit the photo he wishes to take. I could use Irving Penn's work as an inspirational start because I also have to use food in my work. I could use his cubes of frozen food to design a setting area that is functional with the different cube blocks working as individual seat that can resemble a piece of fruit such as a apple. • Irving Penn doesn’t just photograph the piece of food as it natural form but changes the properties of it by maybe freezing the food into blocks or striping the skin from an apple so that the core is showing and just leaving the bones of the food so that it looks eaten. • The cracked egg could also be developed and used as a seating area with the white shell becoming a shelter that protects the seat which would be the egg yolk. This could be cushioned so that when its being used it becomes comfortable for the user.
Functional Sculptures
• So design that can be used as a seat or climbing frame for children could be created as they are a sculpture that has a function making is useful as it is not just their to look at. • The first design is a necklace which includes gems that look like they have been made from jelly and each gems is able to be used as a seat. • The next is a pear that has a third cut out of it to allow a seat for one person. That was influenced by the piece of fruit • The next is a cube apple , but could be any fruit. This is also a chair as its flat surfaces allows for a fairly comfortable seat. Which was influenced by the way the Japanese have been able to grow cube pieces of fruit • The next two are for a children's playground as the first is a chair that I on a piece of cheese that works as the base. The chair and piece of cheese is connected by a spring as the chair is able to be moved in all directions. • And the last design is a burger that works as the base for a child's slide with the ladders on the other side.
Dimensions
• These ideas have been influenced by nature as the tree is a an iconic part of nature as they can be seen almost anywhere. By taking the idea of the tree and how each branch can be used as a support for any children as I design this to be a playground ride. • I then created the tree house design from looking at a cactus flower that is very segmented in its form as each petal is clearly visible on it own away from any other petals. I used this theory in the two designs as I would used a petal like shape repeatedly so that a multiply amount of pods were created for a tree house. I hen created the seating area by using the same concept of segmenting the original form and create a multiply amount of areas for separate people.
Segment Model • From using plaster I was able to understand how you can use a mould to produce a cast of what shape you have designed the mould to make. From creating a circular mould I could produce a shape that ha been segmented to represent the different seating areas.
Cube Fruit Seating
• By using MDF I could easily cut multiply small cubes with the band saw as of how easy it is to cut through the material. I cut the cubes to be 10mm by 10mm so that they were reasonable size to represent the size I wanted by model to become. I then used acrylic paints of green and yellow to represent apples and lemons. The acrylic paint was used as the surface is a wood.
Card Models • I then explored how I could use card to display my ideas through a model. I used the card without the use of glue by using slots to fit the nets together. I think it was effective as I was able to use different shapes as the card was easily manipulated into shapes that I could use. I chose the pie and the cube fruit to make as it was easier to create these from card as I could use nets for the main shapes. With these card models I was then able to move them around and rearrange the positioning of them so that I could see where they would look best positioned.
Modelling Foam • By using modelling foam I was able to easily shape the foam to the desired shape. The foam has different properties as of the different possibilities that I had. I found that I could make the foam to look a lot like popcorn. I done this by chiselling small parts of the foam out and then create a seat.
Different Cultures and their Iconic Meals
Asian • When we think of Asia and the iconic dishes that have been made from the countries of China, Japan etc. we first think of noodles and the chopsticks that are used to eat this. Asia could influence me in a design as I plan to design a giant pot of noodles with the chop stick within the box and the noodles overflowing the cardboard takeaway box as these Chinese restaurants are in the local area and people can easily recognise the what the sculpture would be. The way that some people eat in Asia could also be incorporated into the design and that his how they kneel when eating as they believe it is a sign of respect. By being influenced by this I could add a giant pillow or cushion next to the pot of noodles where a number of people will be able to sit on the giant seat. • I was then thinking how I could let the community get involved with the design and I thought to allow people to draw a little picture or message on the pot so that people where involved with the sculpture. The message would have to be related to Asia as they were allowed to write what they wish.
Takeaway Noodle Box • I was able to create a noodles takeaway pot from sheet of card without any adhesives as I used slots in the net so that the four panels would slot into one another and still be practical as they was no holes from any food to escape from. • I could use this as a sculpture trail as it is easily recognisable and could be made from plaster. • I think this sculpture could be used in havering as of the multiply takeaway restaurants that can be found. This sculpture could help show how diverse the community is.
Great Britain • The iconic British meal would have to be the Sunday roast with the Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and baked potatoes. Along with the meal a cup of tea is relatable to Great Britain as this is a common and iconic drink to the British. By using this for inspiration I could design a dishes that includes all he ingredients usually used in a Sunday roast on a large scale and I could add a cup of tea along with the meal. They could be smoke machines hidden in the design so that small amounts of smoke are let off to give the impression that the meal has just been cooked and is still steaming. • The other meal that is associated with the British would be the full English breakfast. This consists of bacon, beans, toast, sausages hash brown, eggs, mushrooms and a black pudding. This meal could also be designed like the Sunday roast as they are both served on plates and are warm as they have been cooked. So if designed I would create them both on a similar scale that is larger than the normal sized dishes you would usually find them on.
Italy • I have created Italy’s iconic dish of spaghetti and meatballs by using modelling foam that I shaped into a sphere and then string was used as spaghetti. • I think I could create this to a bigger scale for a sculpture as of how easy it is to create a large ball. It could then be painted or sprayed brown so that it will loo like a meatball. The string could then be changed to a larger rope so that it is to the right scale.
