Thespian Society to present ‘The Curious Savage’ this weekend GOWANDA — The Gowanda Thespian Society will present “The Curious Savage” at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday in the Gowanda High School Auditorium.

The comedic play features Mrs. Ethel Savage, an elderly woman played by Kala Farley, who has been left $10 million dollars by her husband and wants to make best use of it, in spite of her grownup stepchildren’s efforts to get their hands on it.

The play, which first premiered in New York City in October 1950, was written by John Patrick.

Tickets for the performance are available at the door and cost $5 for ages 19-64; $3 for ages 5-8 and those over 65. Children 5 and under are free.

GOWANDA — The Gowanda Volunteer Fire Company held its 2017 installation of officers dinner on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the first hall.

Chris Baker, director of emergency services for Cattaraugus County, served as the guest speaker for the event. Cattaraugus County Legislator Dick Klancer served as the master of ceremonies for the evening.

Introductions were made by Assemblyman Joseph Giglio, Mayor Heather McKeever, village board members, past chiefs and presidents, members with 50-plus years of service and members with 25-plus years of service, the district 1 fire coordinator and surrounding fire companies.

Pipeline stream crossings pose concerns to some

MACHIAS — A growing number of landowners along the proposed National Fuel Gas Northern Access Pipeline route are questioning plans to cross more than 180 streams.

The Northern Access Pipeline is a proposed 97-mile long natural gas pipeline to transport Marcellus shale gas from McKean County in Pennsylvania and across Cattaraugus, Erie and Niagara counties and a corner of Allegany County.

Lia Oprea, a Sardinia resident in Erie County with property bordering Cattaraugus Creek, and founder of WECAP — Wyoming, Erie and Cattaraugus Communities Act on the Pipeline — updated about 20 people who attended an informational meeting last week at the King Memorial Library.

Oprea said National Fuel Gas plans to use horizontal drilling techniques to drill under only a half dozen streams along the 97-mile route. Besides the 180 streams the pipeline would cross,

there are 270 wetland areas along the route.

Before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission can formally approve the National Fuel Gas application for the pipeline, the state Department of Environmental Conservation must issue a 401 Water Permit, Oprea told the group.

Oprea said the Marcellus shale gas from Pennsylvania will not be used in New York, or even in the U.S. She said plans call for the gas to be shipped to Ontario, where it could enter the export market.

National Fuel Gas has said the gas could go to markets in eastern states or Canada.

“We think we can beat this,” Oprea said. “It’s not bringing any gas to us and it’s going through a lot of waterways.”

Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2017 Pipeline from Page 4 Pipeline, said Diana Strablow, a Niagara Sierra Club representative from Buffalo. The company has said it has about 80 percent of the necessary approvals from landowners, she said.

With the pipeline bisecting the region’s large Cattaraugus Creek Basin sole source aquifer, Strablow said there was all the more reason to stop it. The project would require vast amounts of water from streams like Cattaraugus Creek for testing purposes.

Oprea said DEC has been critical of the plan in the past, but appears to be close to issuing a notification of a complete application. This would set off a series of DEC hearings along the pipeline.

Oprea said the Sierra Club and Seneca Nation President Todd Gates have joined WECAP in opposition to the pipeline. State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman stopped another Southern Tier pipeline over water concerns, she added.

Oprea urged landowners who feel they have been harassed to sign the right-of-way agreement should file a complaint with FERC and the state Attorney General’s Office.

The group is also calling for people opposed to the pipeline to contact Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Office.

She said she had allowed National Fuel Gas representatives onto her property for survey purposes, but refused to sign a right-of-way agreement.

GOWANDA — Gowanda American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 409 has announced its selection for this year’s American Auxiliary Empire Girls State program.

Katie Igielinski of Perrysburg has been selected to attend the weeklong educational experience. This year’s alternate is Jessica Whalen, also of Perrysburg.

The Gowanda Central School District has again been selected to participate in the 2017 session of the American Legion Auxiliary Empire Girls State Program.

Only 360 students are chosen from high schools across New York.

Girls will participate in campaigns, rallies, speeches, platform and various legislative committees. They will also create bills.

Friendships — a gilt-edged treasure trove

This time of the year, particularly December, January, and February, we remember with special fondness our friends, and “auld acquaintance” is not forgotten.

Friendships are a treasure of unsurpassed value. It has been said that “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” This was an expression I remember from the days of my youth. Through the years, I have learned to appreciate the inestimable value of genuine friendships.

I so treasure my friends. My best friend is my wife, Elaine, as well as our children and our six grandchildren.

Indeed, they are gifted treasures. Truly, there is no greater joy than the genuine friendship we enjoy among the members of our immediate family. We are deeply thankful for those friendship-ties which bind us together.

And then too, we are deeply thankful for the friendships we have with all those individuals who are so much a part of our “family of friends.” Authentic friends are more valuable than precious jewels. For you see, sincere friendship is a bond that transcends all barriers. Truly, genuine friendship is a treasure trove of human quality which one can give to others and one can receive from others. Friendships are bound by the glue of mutual dependability, spontaneity and respect.

When does a friend become a friend?

Well, it may take time to discover that a quality of friendship exists. When I was a young child, our mom would often make a batch of homemade root beer for us to drink during the hot summer days. But, before we could drink it, we had to wait several days for it to season.

And so it is with friendship, it just may take time for an acquaintanceship to become a friendship. But somehow, you know when an acquaintance becomes a good friend. That is just one of the many joys of getting to know folks.

I treasure my friends of long standing from the days of my youth, and the new friends I have gained along the way. One just does not forget a genuine friend. A friend is one who believes in you and will stand by you every step of the way.

To have a loyal friend like that is a rare find.

To be sure, one values one’s friendships by a being a loyal, genuine and trusted friend in like- manner. You know, there is a magnet in each of our hearts that will attract true friends. That magnet is e emplified by unselfishness and thinking of others first. or the language of friendship are not only words but meaningful actions.

Friends do not have to always be together to remain friends. Geography and time need not separate friendships. There are times good friends are separated for years, but when they meet again, they feel as loyal to each other as they were when they were younger. Real friend-

ships last a lifetime. And, as folks get busy with their own families, personal endeavors, and work schedules, all it takes is a reunion to rekindle the happy memories and loyalties. And loyalties exist when a spirit of credibility is present.

All in all, credibility must exist between individuals if a spirit of friendship is to abide. A tree is known by its fruit; a person by their deeds. A good deed is never lost; one who sows courtesy reaps friendship, one who plants kindness gathers respect. And respect engenders credibility, which is a bond for friendship to exist.

Napoli native continues 75-year Seabee tradition The motto of the U.S. Navy’s Construction Force — known as the Seabees — has been “We Build, We Fight” for the past 75 years. etired aster Chief Petty Officer Tom Stanley, a Cattaraugus County native and Salamanca High School graduate, built and fought around the world as a Seabee. A native of the town of Napoli, he’s currently a government civilian working with the Navy at Port Hueneme, Calif.

“I’m the reserve training coordinator for the Seabees serving from the West Coast,” Stanley says in a Navy information services feature story.

The jobs of some of the Seabees today have remained unchanged since World War II, when the Seabees paved the 10,000-mile road to victory for the allies in the Pacific and in urope, according to Lara Godbille, director of the U.S. Navy Seabee Museum.

“The Seabees gave me the ability to do something different and serve my country,” Stanley says. “No job was ever the same as a Seabee. I got to do a lot of traveling and see a lot of places, leaving behind a completed project that people would be able to use for

years. After I retired from the Navy as a master chief, I went to work as a government civilian, where I’m still able to serve the Seabees in a positive way, having an impact on the Navy of the future.”

FOR THE PAST 75 years, Seabees have served in all American conflicts. They have also supported humanitarian efforts using their construction skills to help communities around the world following earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters.

“I am proud of the hard work that Seabees do every day,” says Rear Adm. Bret Muilenburg, commander of the Naval acilities ngineering Command. “Their support to the Navy and Marine Corps mission is immeasurable, and we look forward to the next seven decades of service.”

Seabees around the world will take part in a yearlong celebration in 2017 to commemorate the group’s 75-year anniversary. The theme of the celebration is “Built on History, Constructing the Future.”

GOWANDA — Douglas . Oger, 68, of School Street, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday (Jan. 17, 2017) at home. orn on ay 6, 1948, in Gowanda Douglas was a son of Frederick and Rosamund Farley Oger.

Doug was the steward and bar manager of the American Legion Post 409 of Gowanda for many years. He was a Vietnam War veteran honorably serving with the U.S. Army.

Basil V. Aldrich

SOUTH DAYTON — Basil V. Aldrich, formerly of Little Valley and South Dayton, passed away peacefully Saturday (Jan. 14, 2017) in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Williamsville, with family at his bedside.

Mr. Aldrich was predeceased by his beloved wife of 70 years, Ella Liskow Aldrich, in December 2015.

Mr. Aldrich, born Aug. 27, 1925, in Red House, was a son of the late Richard and late Hazel France Aldrich. He was also predeceased by his brother, Everett; and sister, Evelyn York.

He graduated from Little Valley Central School in 1942 and attended Syracuse University. After completing several courses in engineering, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served in the military from 1943 to 1946 as a test pilot ying the P-38 aircraft and as a pilot ying instructor. fter military service, he continued his lifelong love of ying and held a commercial pilot license with single and multi-engine instrument ying and instructing certifications. t one time, r. ldrich ew .S. ir ail and air freight on the East Coast out of the Jamestown airport, as well as ying fire patrol for the U.S. Forestry Service covering the Allegheny National Forest area.

Mr. Aldrich worked in construction throughout his career in Western New York, as a laborer and foreman, building numerous public buildings, including various stores, churches, schools, auditoriums,

motels, homes and fireplaces. As the construction crew foreman, he was proud of the work performed by his crew and always stated he was honored to have personally been able to install the beautiful tile mural, using American Olean Tile Co. tile, on the front of the Olean Municipal Building.

Additionally, along with his wife, he built the Valley Lanes bowling center in Little Valley, and together they operated it for 12 years before moving to South Dayton, where they built the Aldrich Drive-In Restaurant on Route 62, which they operated for eight years until they retired.

Mr. Aldrich is survived by two daughters, Kathleen (Douglas) Robison of Avon, Ohio, and Pamela (Kenneth) Volz of Williamsville. He is also survived by five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Donna Liskow; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 . State St., Olean. funeral service, with Pastor enee dams officiating, immediately followed, and burial took place at St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Loran L. Smith

GOWANDA — Loran L. Smith, 83, of School Street, passed away peacefully Wednesday (Jan. 18, 2017), surrounded by family.

Born on Oct. 3, 1933, in Cottage, he was a son of Ralph and Doris Mosher Smith.

Loran married the former Grace Anne Abramowski on May 17, 1952, at the St. John Fisher Roman Catholic Church. They were married 56 years before Grace passed away April 9, 2008.

Loran was a jack of all trades from farming to baking. He enjoyed bowling and golfing, and he was an avid outdoorsman. Family and friends enjoyed his pies and bread.

Loran is survived by four children, Jeree (Flip) White of Salamanca, James (Karen) Smith of Collins, Kenneth (Kelly) Smith of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Anne (Eric) Driscoll of East Rochester; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Carl (Carol) Smith of

Searles: Few pros for county in NY budget

LITTLE VALLEY — Unlike in past years, information on the 2017 state budget has been hard to come by, according to Cattaraugus County Administrator Jack Searles. t has been pretty hard to find out budget information because of the when it was released,” Searles said last Thursday from his office in the County Center, two days after the budget was released by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

That’s because it was released late in the evening Tuesday, Jan. 17, during two separate and private budget meetings, Searles said.

Even many state lawmakers were in the dark on the governor’s 5,000page proposed budget.

The New York State Association of Counties was also left scrambling to interpret the budget proposals.

The group meets in its annual winter gathering in Albany at the end of the month, Searles said. The budget will be the top topic.

Searles said there are two positives in the governor’s proposals that he noticed: a promise to address the issue of funding counties’ legal defense of the indigent; and taking over counties’

Medicaid administrative costs.

The county spends more than $2.1 million on legal defense of the poor.

The administrative costs for Medicaid are being tallied.

The governor last month vetoed a bill that would have the state take over counties’ legal defense of indigent costs.

There’s another mandate on the horizon, raising the age for criminal responsibility from 16 to 18 by 2020, that would also require additional funding because of increased caseloads in Social Services, Searles said.

While New York is one of the last states to do this, it will not come without county costs.

Without a clear reduction in mandates and increased state programming, Searles said county costs will go up.

“It’s really, really odd the way they rolled it (the budget) out, from State of the States across the state and a clandestine release of the budget, ” he said.

Searles said the governor’s proposed budget is part of “a delicate balancing act that has to be played out.”

The state Senate and Assembly will now hold budget hearings in the rush to pass it before April 1.

■ Jan. 14, 8:55 p.m., Ryan D. Pisa, 38, of Gowanda, was charged with operating a vehicle with a suspended registration after patrol stopped a vehicle operated by Pisa was stopped for an unspecified traffic infraction. During this traffic stop, a DMV computer check revealed that Pisa’s vehicle registration was suspended Jan. 4 for an insurance lapse. Pisa was arrested for operating a vehicle with a suspended registration and was then released on an appearance ticket to appear in Persia Town Court.

■ Jan. 18, 7:15 p.m., Christopher P. Murray, 25, of Gowanda, was charged with seconddegree harassment after patrol responded to the report of a disturbance at a North Water Street residence. Patrol was notified urray had been involved in a verbal altercation with a male acquaintance. This verbal altercation escalated into a physical altercation with Murray pushing and threatening the male subject. Murray was arraigned in Persia Town Court and released on his own recognizance to reappear in Persia Town Court at a later date. At 9:25 p.m. on the same date, Murray was again charged with second-degree harassment after patrol responded to a disturbance at the North Water Street residence. Patrol was notified that contrary to the court and patrol’s direction, Murray had returned to the residence he was previously arrested at and harassed the same male subject verbally and threatened to harm him. Murray was again arraigned in Persia Town Court and remanded to Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of $250 bail.

■ Jan. 19, 7 p.m., Daniel J. Sawyer, 26, of Collins, was charged with petit larceny after patrol responded to the report of a shoplifting incident at a Buffalo Street business. Patrol was informed Sawyer had taken merchandise worth approximately $9 and left without paying. Sawyer was released on an appearance ticket for Collins Town Court.

Cattaraugus County Court report LITTLE VALLEY — A Gowanda man will go to prison for a felony drug conviction.

Dennis G. Mitchell, 28, was sentenced Tuesday, Jan. 17 in Cattaraugus County Court to three years in state prison followed by two years of post-release supervision for his conviction of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a class B felony. He was further sentenced to a concurrent six months in prison for second-degree criminal possession of methamphetamine-manufacturing material, a class A misdemeanor.

The incidents involving the preparation of meth occurred Dec. 21, 2015, and Sept. 5, 2016, in Persia, according to District Attorney Lori Rieman, whose office reported the case ednesday, Jan. 18 among numerous others that were heard the previous day.

IN OTHER CASES: ■ Gary Heinaman, 78, whose address was not given in a report, was sentenced as a previously convicted felon to two concurrent terms of two to four years in prison for thirddegree burglary, a class D felony; and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a class E felony. The incident occurred Nov. 29, 2015, in Ellicottville, Rieman stated.

■ Lucas Burdic, 23, of Delevan, was sentenced to six months in jail and 10 years of probation for thirddegree rape, a class E felony; and second-degree criminal trespassing, a class A misdemeanor. He entered a dwelling unlawfully and had sex with another person by forcible compulsion April 9 in Yorkshire, Rieman stated.

■ George Kennedy, 27, of Gowanda, pleaded not guilty to third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, class B felonies. Authorities allege the incident, involving a type and quantity of narcotic that were not specified in a report, occurred July 20 in Persia. The case was adjourned for motions.

■ Christopher A. Barber, 28, of Portville, was sentenced to five years of probation for third-degree grand

larceny, a class D felony. He stole property valued over $3,000 on Nov. 23, 2015, in Portville, Rieman stated.

■ Jessica L. Silverheels, 37, of owanda, was sentenced to five years of probation for fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a class felony. She sold an unspecified type and quantity of narcotic drug Aug. 7, 2014, in Persia, Rieman stated.

■ Richard Kraft, 21, of Olean, pleaded not guilty to third-degree burglary, a class D felony; and petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor. Authorities allege the incident occurred Oct. 26 in Allegany. The case was adjourned for motions.

■ Patrick D. Potter, 24, of Delevan, pleaded not guilty to failure to register an address change with the sex offender registry, a class D felony.

Authorities allege he didn’t register within 10 days of moving between Sept. 26 and Oct. 14. The case was adjourned for motions.

■ Carolyn Wapniewski, 54, of Freedom, pleaded not guilty to thirddegree burglary, a class D felony; and petit larceny, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property; and providing a false written statement, class A misdemeanors. Authorities allege the incident occurred Sept. 6 in Freedom. The case was adjourned for motions.

■ Lisa E. Murphy, 44, of Salamanca, pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated, a class E felony.

She drove with a 0.18 percent blood alcohol content Sept. 14 in Olean, Rieman stated. Sentencing was scheduled for March 20.

■ Robert Fisher, 59, of Lake Placid, Fla., pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated, a class E felony.

He drove with a 0.17 percent blood alcohol content Oct. 18 in Coldspring, Rieman stated. Sentencing was scheduled for March 20.

■ Michael Hill, 32, of Salamanca, pleaded not guilty to two counts of driving while intoxicated and a count of aggravated driving while intoxicated, class E felonies; and unlawful possession of marijuana, failure to keep right and failure to dim headlights,

violations. Authorities allege the incidents, including driving with a 0.20 percent BAC, occurred July 2 in Coldspring. The case was adjourned for motions.

■ Melissa Nestell, 32, of Salamanca, pleaded not guilty to two counts of driving while intoxicated and a count each of aggravated driving while into icated and first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, class E felonies; an ignition interlock violation and obstructing governmental administration, misdemeanors; and consumption of alcohol in a vehicle, speeding, not wearing a seat belt, failure to signal a turn and failure to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles of an address change, all violations. Authorities allege the incidents, including driving with a 0.18 percent BAC, occurred Oct. 1 in Salamanca. The case was adjourned for motions.

■ Ronald J. Kuhaneck Sr., 47, of Buffalo, pleaded not guilty to two counts of driving while intoxicated and a count each of first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, class E felonies; an ignition interlock violation and failure to stop, both violations. Authorities allege he drove with a 0.11 percent BAC July 21 in Olean. The case was adjourned for motions.

■ Joe R. Orozco, 51, of Portville, pleaded not guilty to driving while into icated and first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, class E felonies; resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor; and refusal to submit to a breath test and driving left of pavement markings, violations.

Authorities allege he drove in an intoxicated state Oct. 9 in Portville. The case was adjourned for motions.

■ Isaiah M. McKeever, 19, of Machias, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempting to disseminate indecent material to a minor and endangering the welfare of a child, class A misdemeanors. He attempted to send sexually explicit material to a minor through a computer Jan. 1, 2016, in Machias, Rieman stated. Sentencing was scheduled for March 20.

Collins Center Seniors news The January meeting for the Collins Center Seniors was well attended, according to organizers.

Kathy Young was nominated for president, and Rusty Pound was nominated for treasurer. The positions will be voted on at the Feb. 27 meeting Seats are available for Feb. 21 a trip to the Seneca Niagara Casino. Payment is due.

On March 21 the group will return to the casino for a Customer Appreciation Day. Seats are available March 31 for coffee and donuts at Kleinhans Music Hall, followed by a performance of “Midtown Men.” Lunch will follow at 716 Restaurant, and the group will stop at Parkside Candies before heading home. A deposit is re uired to hold a seat, and final payment is due Feb. 15.

Then it’s back to the casino April 18 for The Crystals. Participants can enjoy hits such as “Then He Kissed Me,” “Uptown” and “He’s a Rebel,” along with other hits from the 1960s. The package includes the show, slot dollars and lunch.

It’s almost time to get souped up in Springville

SPRINGVILLE — The Trading Post Community Care Center will host a “Souper” Bowl event from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Springville VFW Post, 650 E. Main St. Tickets are $15 per person at the door at includes “bottomless” bowls of soup, appetizers and desserts. The event will also feature music, games and a gift auction.

Over the last several years the Trading Post has seen a rise the number of families, especially seniors and working families needing help with food, clothing, housing, and other basic needs. The Trading Post consistently serves over 5,000 hot meals per year and logging in more than 1,000 volunteer hours to accomplish this work. In its rural area many seniors and those who are disabled struggle with fi ed incomes and many families are trying to live on low wage incomes.

Due to these factors, the Trading Post has seen the need to continue its outreach and are seeking more caring volunteers to reach out through its Community "Soup" Kitchen. The center offers a free hot meal to the public every Wednesday at noon and is open to anyone.

The center is looking for more people to get involved by slow-cooking their favorite soup or chili, bringing an appetizer, donating a gift or theme basket or volunteering in the kitchen.

Gowanda was outscored 27-6 in the first uarter and trailed 39-17 at halftime.

GOWANDA — The Gowanda Central School varsity wrestling team defeated long time rival Southwestern in Gowanda on Jan. 18 by the count of 48-27.

Dave Ball, Dave Poff, Ryan Gernatt, Zach Phillips and Mike Liszkiewicz each recorded a pin. Winning by decision was Jake Monat, Zach Carroll and Chuck Valone. Andrew Musacchio won by forfeit.

The Panther grapplers will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 31 against

Cattaraugus- ittle alley. The first match is scheduled for 5 p.m.

After their match against the Timberwolves, Gowanda will prepare for the Class A Tourney on Saturday, Feb. 4. Coach Mark Leous will have several wrestlers who will be in contention for top finishes at the tournament.

At the Cattaraugus-Little Valley wrestling tournament on Jan. 21, Gowanda’s Dave Poff won the 120 pound weight division and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Wrestler. Poff is currently ranked No. 1 in Western New York in his weight class.

The Gowanda High School varsity boys' basketball team snapped a two game losing streak and outclassed Portville at home on Jan. 20 by the the score of 6847. The Panthers' Nate Brawdy was the top scorer with 32 points to go along with his 13 rebounds. The junior guard became the third Gowanda player to score over 1,000 points in his career. Bob Robbins, 1966 and and Mike Smuda, 2002 are the other Panthers who have surpassed the 1,000 point milestone. Jarmani Benton chipped in with 18 points.. The Panthers travel to Silver Creek on Monday, Jan. 30.

The junior varsity game tips off at 6 pm followed by the varsity.

The Gowanda Central School co-ed varsity bowling teams swept Hinsdale in their last home match of the season on Jan. 18. With the four wins, the girls brought their overall record to 31-5 losses.

Brianna Thompson rolled at 545 series with a high game of 210. Alicia Barlow also had a good series and rolled a 461.

Brendan Weinaug bowled a three game series of 575 with a high game of 248 as the boys moved their overall record to 239. Aaron Barlow, 192 and Cayleb Davis,

183 also contributed in the four game sweep of the Bobcat bowlers.

The Gowanda Recreation co-ed basketball program for students in grades three through eight is held every Wednesday night at the Academy Place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Fundamentals, drills and scrimmage games take place during each session directed by certified coaches. There is no cost to attend the program. Call the recreation director at 532-4053 for more information.

The Gowanda Recreation Learn to Ski Program at Holiday Valley continues on Sunday, Jan. 29. The program will run each Sunday through Feb. 26 with a bonus day in March. The annual pizza party at the slopes is scheduled for Feb. 5. The bus leaves each Sunday from the front circle of the high school at 1:15 p.m. and returns at 8:30 p.m.

Roller skating for students in kindergarten through eighth grade will continue on Monday, Jan. 30 at the Academy Place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The cost that includes skates remains at $2 per night. Games on skates take place each week beside the free skate periods. Students do not have to attend Gowanda Central School in order to attend this program.

Hall of Fame banquet will be held April 8 at Little Valley LITTLE VALLEY — The 15th annual Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame banquet will be held April 8 at the Little Valley Legion, starting at 6 p.m.

Nominations to represent each of the 13 school district/communities within the county are being sought. Candidates for induction should have at least 20 years of dedication and success as an athlete, coach, athletic or recreation director, game official or any combination.

The history of Gowanda basketball

After competing in the Erie County Interscholastic Conference (ECIC) for nine seasons, the Gowanda High School varsity boys basketball team returned to the Southern Tier when the 1977-78 campaign commenced. The Panthers would again square off against many of the same schools from the old Lake Shore League such as Falconer, Fredonia, Dunkirk, Southwestern and Salamanca. But the new setup called the Cattaraugus County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CCIAC) would also include powerhouse Olean.

Harold Hollenbeck had replaced Bob Shutts as the Panthers varsity coach when the 1977-78 season began. Hollenbeck had a successful career guiding the GCS basketball program from 1951-52 through the 1958-59 season.

Included in the eight-year stretch was the 1953-54 team that won the Class A, Section VI championship by defeating Frontier at Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium. The victory over the Falcons was the last sectional title in basketball for the Panthers.

Hollenbeck, who played college basketball under the legendary “Taps” Gallagher at Niagara University, could not duplicate the same coaching success from the 1950s into the 1977-78 squad. When the season was completed, Gowanda's record was a dismal 2-16.

Hollenbeck, the long time popular high school social studies teacher stepped down from coaching after that one year stint.

Science teacher Tom Cooper reluctantly took over the boys’ varsity basketball program to begin the 197879 season. Obviously, his hesitation was due to the fact that not much talent returned from a two-win team. And it became even more painful as the season moved forward with Gowanda losing one game after another. By February, the Blue and White were just blue as they were unable to win a single game against 17 losses.

Varsity football coach Bob Krenzer replaced Tom Cooper in the fall of 1979, giving Gowanda their third head varsity boys' basketball coach in as many years. The Panthers did have some talent with the likes of Lynn Payne, Chuck Stevens and Kevin Brooks. And the team did post upset victories over Salamanca and Olean.

However, by the end of the season, the Panthers could only manage to win four out of 19 games.

Coach Krenzer returned to the bench the following season and inherited a junior varsity team that had posted a 12-6 record. But again hard times fell on the hardwood as Gowanda failed to win a single game for the second time in three seasons.

Since Coach Bob Shutts had left the program following his team’s sevenwin and 12-loss record in 1976-77, Gowanda managed to win just six games while dropping 66 over the next

four seasons. Unfortunately, this was lowest point for the GCS varsity boys basketball program in school history.

The Panthers did win the Cattaraugus County asketball Officials Sportsmanship Award following the 1980-81 season. The school was presented a blue and white banner that hung in the gym for many years. The downturn did not last forever as the next four seasons saw a dramatic turn that included a conference championship.

The U.S. Energy Department has received around $60 million a year for the cleanup from Congress, and asked for $63.6 million in 2017.

“The Department of Energy’s decision to reexamine the West Valley site kicks the door wide open to achieve reclassification, from commercial to defense site, which can deliver more federal resources that the community and state desperately needs to clean up this toxic site,” Schumer said in a statement to the Olean Times Herald.

“I will continue to work with my colleagues to push the DOE to make this reclassification a reality, said Schumer, who is now Senate minority leader. He has visited the West Valley site several times.

The nation’s first commercial spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant opened in 1966 and over the next six years reprocessed more than 700 tons of spent fuel to reclaim uranium and plutonium for reuse.

Nuclear Fuel Services shut the plant in 1972 for renovations to meet new environmental laws, after which it never reopened. The property went back to the state, which had promoted it.

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed the West Valley Demonstration Project Act, which the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Rep. Stan Lundine of Jamestown shepherded through Congress.

A majority of the wastes came from federal facilities.

The West Valley Demonstration Project recently celebrated the removal of the last high-level vitrified waste from the main process building, which is slated for demolition. The last of 275 canisters containing glassified radioactive waste was recently moved to a concrete pad at the site.

Studies are underway on whether to remove state and federal low-level radioactive waste burial grounds adjacent to the WVDP site, as well as two underground steel tanks that once held radioactive liquid waste.

Due to unforeseen unavailability, it is advisable to confirm the availability of the director with the Olean office prior to traveling to any of the above locations.

Red Cross announces upcoming blood drives

BUFFALO – Following several rounds of severe winter weather in many parts of the country, the American Red Cross urges eligible blood and platelet donors to help restock its shelves to overcome a shortage.

Since Dec. 1, about 300 blood drives across 27 states have been forced to cancel due to inclement winter weather, resulting in more than 10,500 blood and platelet donations going uncollected.

For the 10th year, the Red Cross and Dunkin’ Donuts have partnered in January to help increase donations and reward generous donors. Through the Dunkin’ Donors Make a Difference campaign, all those who come to give blood or platelets now through Jan. 31 at participating Red Cross blood drives will receive a $5 Dunkin’ Donuts card.
