Gowanda middle school principal Chamber names interviews expected next week Spirit of Gowanda

GOWANDA — The Gowanda School Board of Education is expected by the end of the month to meet with potential candidates for the recently created middle school principal position.

That’s according to a tentative timeline discussed by the board at its March 1 meeting.

Gowanda Superintendent Jim Klubek and school board president Lynn Guzzetta were expected to sift through resumes for the middle school position earlier this week in anticipation of interviews being

conducted the week of March 13.

Klubek said the three committees which will interview the remaining candidates are comprised of parents, teachers and support staff, and administration.

Undersheriff Buchhardt to retire after 37 years

LITTLE VALLEY — Robert Buchhardt always wanted to be a police officer.

Now after a lengthy career — including more than 20 years as head of the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office road patrol and the past 1 months as undersheriff — he will retire later this month. he sheriff’s office has been his second family for 37 years. He aims to spend more time with his wife, Jodie, and their children and grandchildren.

The Business Award will be presented to Valley Pharmacy and Medical Supplies. Ann Martindale is this year’s honoree for the Community Service Award. Also, the Excellence in Youth Award — given by the chamber to a deserving senior at Gowanda Central School — will go to Jack Van Wey. Biographies and photos of the honorees will be published in a future edition of The Gowanda Press.

Castellano a candidate Villages have contested for mayor of Gowanda races in March 21 election

GOWANDA — Samuel Castellano has announced his candidacy for mayor of Gowanda in the March 21 elections.

Castellano has spent 48 years total in law enforcement, including many years as a town constable for Perrysburg. Then he went on to work for the Cassadaga and Sheridan Police Department in 1979 to 1981. He also worked for the Gowanda Police Department from 1985 to 2002, where in 199 to he was officer-in-charge.

Due to him only being a part-time officer, he also worked for the attaraugus ounty Sheriff’s office from 19 9 to .

In 2012, he decided to retire from the only thing he loved to do — law enforcement.

During his journey, Castellano enjoyed being active in his community by coaching Little League Baseball, being a leader for oys Scouts and being a volunteer firefighter. He also belonged to the Phoenix 262 Masonic Lodge in Gowanda.

Castellano has resided in Gowanda for many years with his wife, Carla, and youngest son, Ryan. He also is a the father of Doug, Sam and Tonya.

Elections are scheduled in six of the nine villages in Cattaraugus County on March 21, with the only mayoral contest in Gowanda, which straddles the Cattaraugus-Erie County line.

There are contested races in the villages of Gowanda, Portville and South Dayton. There are no elections in Delevan and Franklinville.

In Gowanda, Samuel Castellano is running for mayor on the Forward party ticket and David Smith is running on the Gowanda on the Move ticket.

Gowanda Mayor Heather McKeever did not seek re-election to another twoyear term.

Two incumbent trustees, Carol Sheibley of the Allegiance Party and Paul Zimmerman, running on the Open Door Party, and a third candidate, Jack Boyles of the Public Rights Party, are running for two trustee seats in Gowanda.

In Portville, there are three candidates for two four-year trustee seats.

Incumbent Joseph McLarney is running on the Democratic and Republican tickets. Incumbent Frank Morales is running on the Republican line and Michael DeBarbieri is running on the Democrat line. Republican John Kaiser Jr. is running for a two-year trustee seat. Incumbent Justice Christopher

Piaggi is running unopposed for a fouryear term.

South ayton voters will find ayor Scott Kerr running for re-election to a two-year term on the Democratic and Republican lines.

There are contests for two two-year trustee seats. The candidates are: incumbent Karen Strickland, a Democrat and former mayor; Democrat Melinda Frederickson; and Republicans Robert Astry and Stephen Foster.

In the village of Allegany, incumbent Trustees Kelly Granger and Jerry Cummins are unopposed for four-year terms on the Democrat and Republican lines.

Justice Lance Brennan is unopposed for re-election on the Democrat and Republican lines. attaraugus voters will find a similar lineup with Mayor Wirt Smith, a former trustee who was appointed after the resignation of previous mayor Daniel Mosier, unopposed in his re-election bid on the Democrat and Republican lines for a two-year term. Incumbent Trustees Jason Crawford and Robert Botsford are unopposed for re-election to two-year terms. Also, Diane Wienk is unopposed on the Democratic and Republicans line for a one-year term of trustee.

In Ellicottville, incumbent Gregory Cappelli and Spencer Murray are candidates for two four-year terms as village trustee.

SCA will host watercolor classes

SPRINGVILLE — Judson Brown, a well-known retired art teacher whose work has been featured in “American Artist” magazine, will be teaching a watercolor class at Springville Center for the Arts.

The class will cover beginning washes, design, materials, paper surfaces, concept generation, wet-on-wet, layers, dry brush and experimental applications. His instruction will focus on the basics, but all levels are welcome.

The classes will be held at the newly renovated Vacanti classroom at Springville Center for the Arts, 37 N. Buffalo St., on March 18, March 25, April 1 and April 8 from 10 a.m. to noon.

COMMENTARY WWII veterans’ names sought for Honor Roll Editor: On Sept. 2, 2015, the 70th anniversary of the Japanese surrender ending World War II, the Gowanda Honor Roll was re-dedicated at the historical society museum on Chestnut Street. Containing more than 800 names of Gowanda-area men and women who served during that great conflict, it is a lasting memorial to honor their service to our nation.

Unfortunately, the panels used to print the names did not hold up under the sunlight and heat, but the Honor Roll is being reprinted on a more durable material. To do this, the 12 panels containing the names and photos of some of these veterans were temporarily removed.

Every name from the original roll that was dedicated in 1945 was put on the new roll, with many more names added as a result of thoroughly researching existing wartime newspapers. Great care was taken to ensure that anyone who served from the Gowanda area had a chance to have their name included on the list. Now that the panels are accessible for a time, here is that chance.

From now until March 31, the Gowanda Area Historical Society is seeking submissions of names of World War II veterans from this vicinity to be added to the Honor Roll. You may submit the veteran’s name by e-mail at gowhist@localnet.com, by phone at 532-3912 or by mail at PO Box 372, Gowanda, NY 14070. After that date the new roll will go to print and the display case permanently sealed.

OBITUARIES Helen J. Kubasiak

COLLINS — Helen J. Kubasiak, 94, of Collins, passed away peacefully Monday (Feb. 27, 2017) in Worcester, Mass.

Helen was born May 30, 1922, in Elkland, Pa., a daughter of the late John and Katie Brzykowski Victor. In 1943, she was married to Emil Kubasiak, who predeceased her.

She was employed at Gowanda Psychiatric Center from 1965 to 1980 until her retirement.

She was a member of the Gowanda VFW Post No. 5007 Auxiliary and the Slovenian Club. She and her husband were instrumental in rebuilding the new VFW in Gowanda.

All of Helen’s favorite things centered around her unconditional love for family.

She would host Thanksgiving dinners for 15 to 20 family members, doing all the cooking and baking herself. Her peanut butter pies and chocolate lushes were her unmatchable trademark. Her beautiful calligraphy addressed many wedding envelopes. Crewel stitchery was an enjoyable hobby for Helen.

She loved to vacation with her family during the summer in the New England states as well as Niagara-on-the-Lake, Seneca Lake and Chautauqua Lake. She was a gracious lady and always well groomed.

Her coordinating neck scarves and weekly hair appointments brought her great satisfaction. Well into her 90s, she enjoyed riding her John Deere tractor and her beautifully

CATTARAUGUS — Margaret R. Perkins, 59, of Cattaraugus, passed away Wednesday (March 1, 2017) at her home.

She was born Jan. 6, 1958, in Jamestown, a daughter of Leonard and Elizabeth Carlson.

Mrs. Perkins was married to Duane Perkins, who survives.

She was a loving wife and mother and was truly the rock of the family.

Besides her loving husband, she is survived by two sons, Alexander Perkins of Cattaraugus and Lance (Kate) Perkins of Freeport, Ill.; a daughter, Tiffany Perkins of Little Valley; a grandchild on

She recently shared a story with a grandchild about her love for basketball in her high school years saying, “I was an awesome sharpshooter!”

Everyone who knew her saw a classy, gracious woman who listened well, laughed freely and loved friends and family. Her beautiful, blue eyes were indeed the window to a beautiful soul.

Mrs. Kubasiak is survived by a daughter, Judy Yauckoes of Holden, Ma.; four grandchildren Kathy (Ken) Evans, Robert (Kattia) Yauckoes, Ryan (Michelle) and Randy (Stacie) Kubasiak; and seven greatgrandchildren, Shanleigh, Meredith, Camila, Aidan, Luke, Makayla and Marisa. Also surviving is a sister, Dorothy (Louis) Selan of Gowanda; a brother, Richard Victor of Dunkirk; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Gary Kubasiak; three brothers, Frank, John and Stanley Victor; and two sisters, Blanche Gabel and Sally Elvin.

Friends called Sunday at the Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 105 E. Main St., Gowanda. A Mass of Christian Burial was said Monday, March 6, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Gowanda.

Mrs. Pennell had been employed in food service at many area restaurants and in Rochester.

She was a member of the Little Valley United Methodist Church and was a loving, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

SEBASTIAN, Fla. — Clayton Merritt, 80 years young, passed away Monday (Feb. 27, 2017) at Sebastian River Medical Center in Sebastian.

He was born in Oswego, N.Y., lived in Gowanda, N.Y., and wintered in Barefoot Bay. He spent his career moving through the ranks from correction officer to correction captain before he retired with 33 years of service from the New York State Department of Corrections.

He enjoyed 23 years of retirement traveling and playing golf with some of his dear friends.

He was a member of Gowanda Shrine Club No. 1; the Ismailia Shriners; Phoenix Lodge No. 262; Oswego Elks Lodge No. 271, where he was a life member; Gowanda Loyal Order of Moose No. 1382; and the British Heritage Club of Barefoot Bay. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie;

OTTO — Sally L. Hintz, 67, passed away Tuesday (March 7, 2017) at her home.

She was born Jan. 11, 1950, in Auburn, a daughter of the late Richard and Elizabeth Maywalt O’Hora. On Jan. 1, 1997, she was married to Jerold Hintz, who survives.

Mrs. Hintz was a second-grade teacher at Cattaraugus-Little Valley Central School until her retirement. She was also a wedding photographer.

Mrs. Hintz was a member at the Gowanda Free Methodist Church as well as the New York State United Teachers.

She enjoyed gardening and knitting as well as donating many pairs of mittens, gloves and scarves through her church.

GREENHURST — Ella Murphy, 102, passed away Sunday (March 5, 2017) at Heritage Green Nursing Home in Greenhurst. She was a former resident of Ellicottville and Springville.

Ella was born Aug. 21, 1914, in Ellicottville, to Jess and Neola Wright Meacham as the youngest of nine brothers and sisters, all of whom are deceased. On May 7, 1936, she married Francis W. Murphy, of Ellicottville, who predeceased her in 1998.

The Murphy family were dairy farmers, always having lived in Ellicottville until selling their farm in 1954 for the construction site of Ellicottville Central School on Route 219. The family then moved to Springville, where they operated another farm and later relocated into the village.

Ella was a hardworking and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother.

Her special joy was always to have food and family around a huge dining room table for holiday meals and celebrations. She had been employed at the

PITTSBURGH — David O. Butler, 69, formerly of Cattaraugus, N.Y., passed away Saturday (March 4, 2017) at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh.

He was born June 29, 1947, in Cattaraugus, a son of the late Oliver and Mary Taylor Butler.

Mr. Butler was a U.S. Army veteran and was previously an employee of the Cattaraugus County Highway Department.

He is survived by his wife, the former Delia Scott; two daughters, Sherri Brooks of North Versailles, Pa., and Sue Butler of Bella Vista, Ark.; four brothers, Ralph (Trudy) Butler of Olean, N.Y., Harley Butler of Franklinville, N.Y., Donald

(Teressa) Butler of Goose Creek, S.C., and Robert Butler of Hamburg, N.Y.; a sister, Mary (Jim) Bielat of Fredonia, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Grace Brooks; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Butler is predeceased by two brothers, Douglas Butler and Wendell Butler; and two sisters, Leah Snow and Linda Davies.

The investigation revealed Acevedo was involved in providing alcohol to the juveniles. Acevedo was arraigned in Collins Town Court and remanded to Erie County Holding Center in lieu of $500 bail.

Franklinville mayor resigns to focus on county Legislature

FRANKLINVILLE — Franklinville Mayor Robert J. Breton has announced his resignation from the post recently, saying he felt it would be a disservice to serve both as mayor and as a county legislator.

Breton, a Republican, told the Olean Times Herald last week he announced his resignation at Monday, Feb. 27’s village board meeting.

Succeeding Breton as mayor is Harvey Solvie, who has served as a village trustee for the past five years. eputy Mayor Ryan Jordan nominated Solvie to serve as mayor until the next election in arch 1 , when the remaining two years of the term would be on the ballot. The board voted unanimously for Solvie to succeed Breton.

Breton, who is executive vice president and chief manufacturing officer at Ontario Knife Co., was elected mayor

He has been unopposed in the past two elections for mayor.

Treasurer reminds taxpayers of new foreclosure process

LITTLE VALLEY — Last year, the Cattaraugus County Legislature voted to begin foreclosure proceedings on property after two years of unpaid taxes instead of three starting in 1 .

County Treasurer Joseph G. Keller is trying to get the word out to taxpayers that the foreclosure procedures have changed.

If property owners haven’t paid their 1 and 1 town and county property taxes by the deadline, foreclosure proceedings could begin by March 31,

with the first step being the publishing of properties and owners with unpaid taxes.

The treasurer said Cattaraugus County is among the last counties in New York state to adopt the two-year cycle for foreclosure proceedings to begin.

“I don’t think we were doing anyone a favor with the three-year foreclosure cycle,” Keller said in an interview late last week. “After three years, the penalty and interest in almost percent on top of the original tax bill,” he said.

The taxes are due in January, payable in the town or city clerk’s or tax collector’s office. In ebruary, there is a 1 percent penalty assessed, followed by a

2 percent penalty in March. When the unpaid taxes are returned to the county reasurer’s Office pril 1, the county adds a 5 percent return fee plus 3 percent interest. “Add 1 percent each month until it’s paid or we foreclose,” Keller said.

“We’re trying to make people aware that it is happening this year so it’s not a surprise when they get a foreclosure letter.”

The history of the Catt. Co. Hall of Fame

In November 2002, the Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame held its first banquet at the reat alley ire Hall. Thirteen individuals each representing one of the school districts within the county were selected based on their longevity, dedication and success in sports.

Since the inductees went in alphabetical order based on school districts, William Sprague from the AlleganyLimestone School District was the first to be enshrined. Since then, 1 individuals have been honored. This year, 1 more countywide residents will be inducted.

The members of the Hall of Fame are very diverse in their contributions to sports. Included in the special group of former athletes, coaches, game officials and athletic/recreation administrators are female and male professional foot-

ball players, two members of the U.S. Olympic Team, a basketball player who had a tryout with the NBA’s Atlanta awks, an mpire State track and field gold medalist who set a New York State record, a town team baseball manager who has been at the helm for the past seasons, several Section I all of Famers, a former world horseshoe pitching champion, the all-time Western New York winningest boys’ basketball coach and many others with remarkable accomplishments in the field of sports.

Most of the inductees still reside in Cattaraugus County. However, several former athletes and coaches have returned from Florida, Texas, North Carolina and other states to be enshrined.

After dinner each year, the awards ceremony is held. he first order of business is to recognize the previous inductees who are in attendance. That is followed by the presentation of the Hall of ame plaques to each new member of the class. A combination of emotions

can be expected during this part of the program as each inductee gives their acceptance speech.

Last year, the Hall of Fame broke from tradition and inducted a person posthumously for the first time. his year, a second former outstanding athlete will be inducted posthumously.

Not every person who is inducted was an outstanding high school athlete or coach. And although the majority of Hall of Famers have outstanding athletic resumes, there are individuals who have been nominated and inducted based on their long volunteer service in sports to their school and/or community. he 1 th nnual attaraugus ounty Sports all of ame banquet is set for Saturday, April 8. It will be held at the ittle alley egion for the eighth consecutive year. A sellout crowd is expected and 1 more deserving individuals will be honored.

Bandits, Knighthawks split home-and-home The Buffalo Bandits split a home-and-home with the Rochester Knighthawks, winning a home game 1 -9 riday night before falling 9in overtime Saturday afternoon.

Catt-LV’s Grey takes third in New York State

ROCHESTER — CattaraugusLittle Valley’s Britney Grey capped her standout senior high school bowling season with the third-highest individual score in state competition Sunday.

Bowling with the Section 6 team in the NYSPHSAA composite division — where 11 all-section teams compete for a team title — Grey rolled a six-game score of 1, , finishing behind only Section 1’s Victoria Pacacha 1269 and Section 5’s Calla Bellis 1239.

Grey’s scores led the Section 6 team to a third-place finish at , , behind

champion Section ,9 and runnerup Section 1 , at ates Lanes.

Grey had a 580 series in the early session 1 9 199 and a in the last three games 19 .

“She started a little slow this morning, but really picked it up in the afternoon session,” T-Wolves coach John Busekist said.

“Overall, she had a great day. Perfect way to finish her high school career.”

Allegany-Limestone sophomore Cameron Spring, the Section 6 champion two weeks ago, was fourth on the all-section team with a 1,093.

March 29 to meet the potential candidate — or candidates, if necessary. “(We’ll) have a little roundtable conversation, meet the person, make sure the board is comfortable with the person recommended,” said Klubek.

From there, the board is expected to approve an individual for the position at its regular meeting on April 5.

Although it was made a goal by the Buchhardt from Page 1 County Operations Committee last week to fill several positions due to promotions needed to assume Buchhardt’s duties.

Whitcomb did not indicate at that time when the retirement would be effective, nor did he identify who he expects to appoint as Buchhardt’s successor.

In an interview in his office onday, uchhardt reflected on a career that began in 1973 when he worked parttime as a deputy on weekends and at the Cattaraugus County Fair, while working full-time as a truck driver for Little Valley Lumber, which is now Sixt Lumber.

“In 1980, Sheriff Charlie Hill asked me if I wanted to come work for him (full time),” Buchhardt recalled. “I said yes. I had to take a pay cut, but it was always something I wanted to do.”

Hill was Buchhardt’s father-in-law, but Buchhardt said he never felt that nepotism was involved in his appointment after he had developed a good reputation over seven years as a part-timer. Hill’s son Chuck Hill had been named a deputy sheriff earlier. March 25, 1980, was the date of Buchhardt’s appointment.

After attending the Sheriff’s Academy in Chautauqua County, he started on the

board to find someone to fill the new middle school position by the end of the year, Klubek stressed during the conversation March 1 the school will repost for the position if they don’t find a suitable candidate.

“Our goal, obviously, is to get the person on board by the end of the school year to get them accumulated,” he said.

“However, if it needs to take longer to get the right candidate we are going to do that.”

“This is going to be one of the most important hires we are going to make,” added Peter Delpriore, vice president of the board. “We got to get it right.”

The board made the decision earlier this year to return to a three-principal system, a configuration it had last year before instituting a two-principal system this current school year.

The Gowanda school system, which is currently configured as - in elementary and 7-12 in the middle/high school

with two principals, will return to a K-4, - and 9-1 configuration.

The change will allow Dzierba to focus on elementary grades, Dr. Robert Anderson to focus on grades 9-12 and the new middle school principal to focus on the fifth through eighth grades.

David Smith, currently assistant principal for grades 7-12, will remain an assistant principal, Klubek said.

Burrell later promoted him to lieutenant of the road patrol.

“Ernie Travis was the only lieutenant in the department at the time,” Buchhardt said. “It had gotten too big for one person, so Ernie was made lieutenant, overseeing the Detective Bureau and I was the lieutenant overseeing the road patrol.”

Besides Hill, Buchhardt worked for sheriffs John Kalamanka, Ernest Dustman, Jerry Burrell, Dennis John and Whitcomb.

“Until the time I made undersheriff, I was called out for everything from fatal accidents to murders to floods, uchhardt said. “I’m not an excitable person. I have good common sense and I got along with other agencies. This job sometimes gets territorial.”

His promotion from lieutenant to captain came under Dustman’s adminis-

tration.

“I ran the Road Patrol for 20 years” before taking over as acting undersheriff during former Undersheriff Bill Nichols’ fight against cancer, he said.

Buchhardt said there are few roads in the county he hasn’t driven during his years on road patrol and later as road patrol supervisor. He said he narrowed that down to “a few backwater roads in Ischua that aren’t on most maps.”

“There are more than 2,000 miles of road in this county, and I’ve been on most of them at one time or another,” he added. ou don’t often find things on the back roads, but when you do, it was usually a good arrest.”

While he was never an investigator in the sheriff’s office, he did spend more than a year as the investigator for the district attorney’s office when then-investigator Michael Malek was attending the FBI Academy.

Buchhardt never played the role of a heavy. Even though he faced his share of bar fights when he started out on road patrol, he said, “I always treated people the way I would want to be treated.”

Buchhardt said he also “helped some people out of a tough situation” over the years — often family problems. Still, he

knows “there are bad people. There are some people that don’t change. I’ve had the pleasure of arresting some of them.”

He’s seen some of the county’s second generation of felons.

“This is a family organization,” uchhardt added of the sheriff’s office.

“We are very close. We’re each other’s support unit.”

And then Nichols died.

“Losing Bill Nichols was a tragedy for our agency and for the county. He was a hell of a cop,” Buchhardt said.

Whitcomb asked Buchhardt to step in as acting undersheriff and later appointed him to the post permanently.

In retirement, Buchhardt looks forward to traveling with his wife and spending more time with his four grandchildren.

“I want to thank the residents of Cattaraugus County,” Buchhardt said. “There are really great people in the county.

This is home. I like the people in this county. There’s nowhere in this county I wouldn’t go walking with my wife at night.”

He concluded, “We’ve got a great bunch of people here. I’ll miss the people I work with. It has been a pleasure to serve the people of the county.”

“That means you’ve ignored 12 to 15 letters over three years,” Keller said, adding that shortening the foreclosure process will be beneficial to people for not having to come up with large sums of money paying penalties and interest.”

Besides leaving the owners with a smaller tax bill foreclosing in two years, the properties are likely to be in better condition. “Sometimes municipalities like to acquire them and demolish a (blighted) property.”

Keller said there are few owner occupied homes foreclosed on in the county.

“Half of it is vacant land and most of the rest is rental property or vacant,” he said. “It’s not like we’re taking anything great away from people Of the 55,000 properties in the coun-

THE GOWANDA PRESS ty, less than one-quarter of one percent will face foreclosure, Keller said. “With the new two-year foreclosure policy, we want to make sure people aren’t caught napping.”

Keller said, “Any unpaid 2015 or 2016 county (or) town tax bills owing as of July 1, 2017, will be part of our next foreclosure action with foreclosure fees being added July 1, 2017. Payment of all delinquent tax bills will stop the continuation of that foreclosure process.”

Keller said that if property owners have not received their 2017 tax bill, it can be reprinted from the county’s website at www.cattco.org/real-propertyand-gis/rolls-rates.

If paid before March 31, town and county taxes can be aid at the local town or city ta collector’s office.

On eb. , the reasurer’s Office sent out 870 letters to property owners owing 2015 taxes and another 1,225 who owed and 2016 county taxes informing them that the taxes are due and of the change in the foreclosure period.

Breton and the village board came up with an equipment replacement plan “so we can upgrade” when new equipment is necessary.

The village also has streamlined its garbage collection, getting rid of $2 stickers for each bag of garbage and replacing it with a $25 fee per quarter, Breton said.

“I thought we have done a good job of holding down taxes even before the tax cap,” Breton said.

“It’s not just me, it’s the entire village board,” he said. “I’ve had some good boards over the years.”

Breton said he’s also had some good hires, including Public Works Director Cary Hatch and new police Chief Mark Slavinski, a retired Olean Police officer, who replaced longtime chief Tony Wolfer in what was “a good transition.”

“I had good employees that made my life easier,” Breton said.

Why did he resign?

After winning the special election in November over Democrat John Nelson of Ellicottville, Breton, “I felt I would be doing a disservice to one or both positions” by continuing to serve as mayor and District 3 legislator.

“There’s a lot going on in the county and I’ve got a big territory,” Breton said. “I thought it was time to turn it (the mayor’s seat) over to fresh ideas and a new perspective. It’s time for someone else.”

Breton urged the village board to continue to do what’s best for Franklinville.

“While I’m no longer mayor, I would still be representing Franklinville on the county Legislature,” he said.

The Western New York Safari Club on March 4 sponsored a bluebird and wood duck building project for the kids. The event took place at Winters Rigging in North Collins. The parents provided guidance and the SCI members loaned their power tools for the project. The kids were busy until noon, when a hot dog lunch was provided. To date over 40,000 bluebird houses have been built and distributed throughout New York with the assistance of the WNY SCI, Winters Rigging and all the kids and youth groups who helped with this project to restore the bluebird population.
