GOWANDA — All students at Gowanda Central School will receive free breakfasts and lunches beginning when children return for the start of the 2017-18 school year in September. The federally-funded Community Eligibly Program will make meals free for all students, regardless of income. The program eliminates the full-price lunch charges of $1.75 for elementary and $2.25 for middle and high school students. It also eliminates See Lunches, Page 17

LITTLE VALLEY — Jarrett Estus of South Dayton has been exhibiting dairy beef and pigs for the past six years. Since his parents Jessica Milliman-Estus and Eric Estus don’t live on a farm, Jarrett keeps his steer at the farm of his grandparents, Lee and Debbie Milliman of nearby Leon. “My mom and her siblings showed cattle, that’s how I got into it,” said the 16-year-old junior who attends St. Francis High School in Hamburg. He has to get up early to tend to his steer and pig before the 45-minute drive to school. “I think it’s fun,” he said. “Fair week is fun. It’s good experience. You meet lots of people and learn new things. I plan to continue exhibiting until I age out at 19.” Jarrett said that after all expenses, the Market Class Animal Auction can be profitable to 4-H members. “If you manage your expenses well enough, you can still come out on top,” he said.
