Local business offers local trends By Kate Day Sager A more conservative look will likely be seen in more wedding parties this year, as many brides and bridesmaids are not favoring gowns and apparel with an outdoor flare. That’s the word from Susie Austin, owner of BelleRuche Bridal Boutique at 119 N. Union St. in Olean, at least when it comes to local trends. The shop provides personal attention to brides-to-be and bridesmaids in finding the perfect gown or dress, as well as seamstress services to ensure the outfits fit perfectly on the big day. Over the past couple of years, Austin and other bridal shop owners had reported wedding parties were selecting camouflage and other rustic accents for their outfits, as well as cowboy boots in place of the traditional pumps and high heels. Many are opting for dresses with lace and beads. Austin said some preferences haven’t changed, however, for the bridesmaids’ colors. “Blush is still huge, and navy and charcoal,” she said. dresses — few in-between varieties, Austin noted. As for bridal gowns, champagne and gold-color dresses are still trendy and favored by many women for their big day. Sleeveless gowns, or dresses with straps, are also popular. Men in wedding parties have been choosing a variety of gray tuxedos for the big event, Austin said. “There are five or six different shades of gray” being chosen, she noted. “It’s all the rage right now … because it’s not quite as stark and formal as black.” Tuxedos are set off nicely with a variety of vests and ties that match the women’s colors, according to Austin. One constant with weddings has been the time of year selected for the unions. “Pretty much, May through October are the biggest times,” Austin said. Austin did note her shop sold apparel for a wedding that was to be held in mid-January in Olean. The bridesmaids’ gowns for the winter event were long with lace, but still strapless, despite the low temperatures. “We did tuxes and sold bridesmaids dresses for (a weekend wedding) at the Bartlett (Country Club),” she said. “They’re winter lovers; they got engaged while they were snowboarding.”
