Signs of Kessel Construction’s presence found throughout Bradford BRADFORD — Look around the Bradford area, and you’ll see several structures that Kessel Construction has had a hand in.

Probably the most notably in Foster Township for 2015 is the construction of a larger Goodwill building along Foster Brook Boulevard, continuing a trend of business growth in that municipality. That store had been in Bradford for several years.

The building is approximately 14,000-square-foot between the strip mall and Mattress City.

“We’re excited about it. It’s going to put us in a much more visible location,” Ray Donati, president and chief executive officer of Goodwill Industries of North Central Pa, said in a previous statement.

Donati said officials have been looking for a new location for a year or two, and the organization is looking forward to continuing to serve the Bradford area.

Donati said the community will be kept apprised on the development of the new store.

Elsewhere in Foster Township, Kessel Construction worked on multimillion-dollar upgrades to the Shults car dealership on East Main Street.

creating two buildings dedicated respectively to Chevrolet/General Motors and Toyota/Scion. The upgrades are mandated by parent company General Motors, according to dealership spokespeople.

Construction was part of a new 8,500-square-foot Shults Auto Body Shop, the ongoing redesign and reconstruction of the Shults car dealership on East Main Street.

Clark Johnson, territory manager with Kessel Construction, said a new truck loading area would be entirely contained behind the dealership.

“In auto sales real estate is precious ground. We want to make the area safe, but we also need every square inch,” Johnson said.

Ask a Designer: homes that are kid- and grownup-friendly

For new parents, the urge to keep little ones entertained and enriched can often lead to a home so full of baby gear and toys that grown-up style all but disappears.

It doesn’t have to be like that.

Designer Theodore Leaf of Los Angeles says he works with many clients trying to keep their whole home from becoming a playroom.

“All my coolest friends have kids now. And there’s just nobody giving up their cool card,” says Leaf, host of “Living Big Under 1,000 Sq. Ft.” on Apple TV’s new channel The Design Network.

For one thing, he says, “People are having kids older, so they have better stuff. The whole ‘Oh, this sofa is a jungle gym now’ thing has changed, because it’s an $8,000 sofa that they love.”

How do you make a home both kid- and grownup-friendly? Leaf and two other interior designers — Mike Welch and Nathan Turner — offer some ideas:

GROWN-UP ITEMS If you’re setting up a seating area for children to draw or do craft projects, resist the urge to buy a table and chairs designed for a child. You can find smaller-scale furniture that suits your style, says Turner, host of the food and home design series “Snack Chat” on The Design Network.

Choose fabrics that are durable and forgiving with spills, he says. Many companies now make outdoor fabrics that are soft to touch and perfect for indoors too.

Lighter colors — perhaps even white — can work if it’s the right fabric, says the Chicagobased Welch, a former “HGTV Design Stars” competitor.

Along with more grown-up furniture, you can also add stylish toys. Leaf suggests searching flea markets or the web for antiques. One client of his found a chic, midcentury-style dollhouse that’s become a focal point of their living room.

HIDDEN STORAGE All three designers recommend built-in shelving with closed cabinets at floor-level. Leaf suggests adding drawer pulls that are easy for little hands to grab, like a long bar that runs the length of the drawer.

“Kids open it, and know, ‘It’s for me,’” he says. And they learn that “that top shelf, with the cable box or whatever, ‘That’s not for me.’”

Instead of a traditional coffee table, consider an upholstered ottoman with space inside. The ottoman provides both storage and a soft surface for toddlers who are learning to walk. And it doesn’t have to be boring; there are a variety of ottomans for sale, or you can buy one that’s the right size and have it reupholstered.

Or, Leaf suggests, try using a vintage trunk as a coffee table. If you find one at a flea market but can’t get the inside clean enough, just place a big plastic bin inside and store toys there. If you want to keep decorative items on top, situate them on a tray with handles so you lift it on and off easily.

One more hidden storage idea: Bench seating with space inside.

“I live in 800 square feet, so even hiding paper towels is an issue for me,” Leaf says. He’s added banquette seating that flips up to reveal empty space.

“I could put a whole jungle gym in there,” he says.

COOL KIDS’ ROOM Welch recently designed a nursery that had chic, black-and-white stripes on the walls instead

of baby pastels. “I didn’t feel like the room needed to be really juvenile,” he says.

“A lot of times people feel boxed in,” he adds, but “you don’t need basketballs on the walls” for boys or princesses for girls.

Turner agrees, and adds that babyish decor can be impractical.

“Children grow so quickly and their tastes change and they start wanting to have their own environment,” he says. If you choose “very juvenile things ... you’re going to have to do it all over again.”

So instead of the bed shaped like a racecar, choose a simple, classic bed that a school-age kid won’t think is immature. And make sure it offers storage space underneath. “Not only is it a neat way to store items, but it’s also low enough for little hands to help pick up after themselves,” Welch says.

Teaching kids to help clean up is a great way to keep the chaos at bay throughout your home, the designers say. Leaf recalls that when he was growing up, “our house was a disaster all the time,” but his cousins’ house seemed perfect, thanks to a label-maker.

“Those kids knew were everything belonged,” he says, “and they were trained from birth to put things away.”

Special to House & Home SALAMANCA — Architecture is everywhere. It can inspire the observer, trigger their memories and create emotional responses. Many people are oblivious to the interesting buildings around them while others appreciate the art and design involved in constructing them.

Salamanca’s architecture offers a great overview of American architectural design and community growth. On Aug. 9, the Salamanca Historical Society and Museum hosted guest speaker Jaré Cardinal, who has been a museum and historic preservation professional for 35 years.

In her presentation, “The Streets of Salamanca,” she gave an overview of the late 19th to mid-20th century styles that survive in Salamanca today.

“Salamanca has a rich history — its architecture reflects that,” she said. “Whether it’s the city’s downtown buildings, its churches or schools, its surviving railroad stations and especially the houses, all tell stories about this community’s past.”

Cardinal said buildings are important and they say a lot about our community. A building is a neighbor and — influenced by culture, landscape and building techniques — it reflects the time and place in which it was built.

“If people looked around the city, they would be surprised at the diversity of architectural styles they would find,” she said. “A few go back to the 1870s, but most of Salamanca’s surviving historical architectural styles range from the 1890s to the 1940s, which was a time of great growth and prosperity.”

Cardinal said certain streets in the city reflect the new-found wealth, but they were often mixed-economic neighborhoods. What she enjoys most about looking at the streets in Salamanca are the houses of the working-class people amongst these large, opulent homes.

The various styles of architecture still seen in Salamanca today include Gable or “T” ells; Italianate; Colonial Revival; Shingle; Queen Anne styles including Eastlake, Free Classic and Tower; Cement/Concrete block houses; Prairie; and Craftsman-style bungalows.

The Gable or “T” ells were America’s first working class home. Widely popular after the arrival of the railroad, from the 1820s-1900s, they were one-and-a half stories or sometimes two-story with a wing.

These houses featured a central gable front with an intersection wing, or wings, to form an “L” or “T” shape. Additions provided additional space, light, and cross ventilation. This style generally had porches located where two blocks intersected as seen at 137 River St., 149 River St., 168 River St. and 267 Wildwood Ave.

Another mid-to-late 19th century style was Italianate, which dominated the American housing construction between 1850-80 and was a common housing form built in expanding towns and cities of the midwest. The style features two or three stories and is rectangular in shape. It has a low-pitched roof with widely overhanging eaves where there are decorative brackets underneath. The style also features tall, narrow, double hung sash windows, sometimes with hooded or arched heads. One example can be seen at 19 South Main St. and another house of the same style can be found at 31 Summit St. A Shingle-style home is located at 25 South Main St. Most houses of this style were built between 1880-90, although there are some examples built in the first decade of the 20th century. They were most popular along the east coast, though they spread through

the United States because they were well-publicized in architectural magazines. This style features irregular roof lines, heavy use of wood shingles on roofs and walls, and strips of three or more windows called Palladian.

There are several categories of Queen Anne-style homes found throughout Salamanca.

This style was popular in the U.S. from 18801910. It featured steeply pitched roofs of irregular shapes and generally has a front-facing gable. Patterned shingles or trim break up a smooth-wall look on an asymmetrical facade.

Partial or full-width porches, generally one-story high, extend along one or both side walls. A good example can be seen at 104 Broad St. The Queen Anne, Eastlake-style, sometimes called “Folk Victorian,” can be seen at 40 Division St. It features the popular ornate ginger-

bread vergeboards, spindle work and brackets. Cardinal said this house could definitely be on the National Register.

At 39 Jefferson St. and all over Salamanca people can see the Queen Anne style, Free Classic that became popular after 1890. This style uses elements often found in Colonial Revival homes such as classic columns on porches that are often grouped together.

The Queen Anne, Towers is another style and can be seen at 127 River St. and 50 South Main St. The tower can be found squared or polygonal and is most often found at a front facade corner.

Another extremely popular style from the early 20th century is the Colonial Revival, which is very symmetrical. Tarry Here Bed and Breakfast at 141 Broad St. and the home at 470 Broad St. are examples of this style, which generally has symmetrically balanced windows that are double hung, usually with multi-pane glazing. Classical columns can be found and the entries are usually central.

The Dowd house at 44 South Main is Neoclassical with many stylistic features similar to Colonial Revival. The difference being that Neoclassical has classic porch columns that generally stretch from the porch floor to the porch roof.

The home at 72 Division St. is a Colonial Revival style with a hipped-roof. A Colonial Revival style with a gambrel roof, sometimes called Dutch, can be seen at 184 River St. Cement/Concrete Block Houses were short-lived style, but they were fireproof and economical. One is located at 84 Division St. Cardinal said there was once a factory at the end of that street where the blocks were made. She said the Wildwood Sanitarium on Prospect Street was also of cement block construction.

Prairie-style came out of the Chicago School of Architecture and Frank Lloyd Wright was a proponent. Most were built between 190515. The style began in Chicago, but because it was publicized in popular magazines and pattern books, it soon became a common style throughout the U.S. Homes in this style feature low-pitched roofs, wide overhanging eaves and a facade that emphasizes horizontal lines. One is located at 83 Front Ave. Craftsman-style bungalows are scattered all over the city. One of note is located at 26 Swan St. and was a model home of B.D. Sheldon, an interior decorator. Another example of a classic bungalow is located at 30 Division St. Cardinal said this is another house that could be on the National Register.

Heavily influenced by the arts and crafts movement, these houses were very popular from about 1905-30. It became a dominant-style for small houses throughout the country featuring low-pitched gable roofs, unenclosed eave overhangs, exposed roof rafters, dormers and often had enclosed sun porches.

The American Foursquare is a classical style built with four rooms above and four rooms below. Two can be seen at 156 and 152 South Main St. Cardinal said in many ways, the city’s architecture has “stood the test of time” partly because, in most cases, there have not been dramatic changes in their styles. She said there are exceptions, however, probably due to necessity. She said numerous houses have been covered with aluminum or vinyl siding and many once open-porches have been enclosed. A few have additions and there are others that have been neglected.

“That is true in most cities in this region, but it is interesting to see how many architectural or decorative elements are still visible,” she said.

“My concern is the current attitude that it is easier and, some believe, more economically feasible to knock a building down rather than to invest in maintaining or restoring that structure.”

Cardinal said she understands it costs money to do this, but each time a building comes down, a bit of a community’s character goes with it. She said some communities and cities see their architecture as essential to their revitalization.

“A community is like an outdoor museum,” she said. “If you understand architectural styles, you can drive through any community and understand that community’s history, as well as their concern for preserving that history.”

By presenting this information to Salamanca residents, Cardinal hopes local residents will gain a new appreciation of the community’s environment and history.

Cardinal is currently a consultant for the Haudenosanee Environmental Task Force developing a 4th grade curriculum on archaeology and the Haudenosaunee culture that is based on a 3,000-year old site at Beaver Island Park on Grand Island.

ANSWER: Having grown up in eastern Pennsylvania, I was unfamiliar with Vernors. Besides the national brands — Coca Cola, Hires, Nehi, Pepsi, and 7-Up, I drank Hellertown Beverage and A-Treat soda pop. When I mentioned the brand to my friends in Michigan, their eyes lit up accompanied by phrases such as “my favorite beverage” and “still drink it.”

James Vernor, a Detroit pharmacist, created his ginger ale formula in 1866. The product was designed to compete with imported ginger ales. It became commercially available in 1880. Vernors’ distinct taste comes from a caramel additive and being initially aged in oak barrels. “Woody,” the Vernors gnome mascot, was used from the early 20th century through 1987, reappearing as the 21st century dawned.

As its popularity grew, Vernor sold bottling franchises, insisting that franchises adhere strictly to his recipe. In 1896,

Vernor closed his pharmacy and opened a soda fountain on Woodward Avenue south of Jefferson Avenue, close to the Detroit ferry docks. Initially, Vernors was distributed exclusive to soda fountains. By the beginning of the 20th century, it was available for home distribution.

Vernors served a Midwest regional market – Ohio, Illinois, and Michigan. The market was expanded to 33 states in 1968. While its popularity is strongest in Michigan’s larger cities, it has a strong following in Florida thanks to the number of transplanted Michiganders. The Vernor family sold the company in 1966. Since then, the brand has seen a succession of owners. It currently is part of the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group of Plano, Texas.

Vernors advertising memorabilia and bottles can be found on multiple internet sale sites. A search of eBay revealed bottles similar to the one you owned priced between $5.00 and $15.00. A search on WorthPoint.com for bottles identical to the one you own provided sell through prices in the $17.50 to $25.00 range. Given Vernors’ long history, there are most likely more than 100 different bottle variations. When researching values, it is critical that exact matches are found.

Condition also is critical. Although you did not indicate the exact source of your bottle, chances are it came from a dump, privy, or similar source. If true, it is not in pristine condition.

Value for your bottle also depends upon where it is being offered for sale. In Michigan, a reasonable secondary market value is around $15.00. The value drops to $5.00 outside the Midwest.

QUESTION: I have a pair of Kron table lamps. The ceramic base is boxed-shaped above a sloped base. There is a green circular medallion with a six-sided star design with a stick star motif in the center surrounded by a dark brown rope design in each of the four sides. The background color is a washed tan.

The lamps are 28 inches tall to the top of the shade mantel. I never heard of Kron lamps. What is their history and value?

NL Council Bluffs, Iowa ANSWER: I like antiques and collectibles that speak decade. Your lamps date from mid-1950s through the very early 1960s. Having grown up in the era of the matched pair of sofa end tables, often coordinated with a matching coffee table, I can easily imagine these lamps in the homes of my “modern” aunts and uncles. The design is a bit too “adventuresome” for my parents.

that era. These lamps sat atop the TV so that you did not watch TV in the dark, a practice that was said to ruin eyes and possibly cause blindness.

Texans, Inc., located in Bangs, Texas, made your lamps.

Thanks to texansinc.com, a website created by David Cole and Mark Stevens, information is readily available about the company and its products, which also included TV lamps along with its table lamps.

Richard Gunter and Howard Kron were the co-designers behind Texans, Inc. Lamps produced by Texans, Inc., contain markings indicating the designer – “Gunter,” “RAG,” and “Kron.” Prior to working for Texans, Inc., Kron worked for Haldeman Potteries (CA), Midwest Potteries (Morton, IL and later Tyler, TX). Texans, Inc. was founded in 1952, survived a 1971 fire caused by lightning necessitating the rebuilding of the plant, and ceased operations in the early 1980s.

Stevens’ and Cole’s website contains a URL for the company’s table lamps and TV lamps. I did not find your table lamps among the examples listed. As a result, I recommend you email a picture of your lamps to Stevens or Cole.

Researching values is fun. An eBay seller has a Kron lamp that is identical to the one you own with a matching table base listed for $499.99 or best offer. To state that this asking price is overly optimistic is an understatement. What was learned from this listing is that Texans, Inc. apparently made tables that complemented some of their lamps. I found a similar example of a lamp that has red rather than green medallions. The eBay seller has reduced the price from $39.99 to $29.99, still indicating he was open to offers.

In Council Bluffs, Iowa, a reasonable secondary market value for the pair of lamps is between $75 and $90. In a larger urban area, for example, Los Angeles, where Modernist tastes are stronger, the value doubles.

QUESTION: I have a Mattel Allan Sherwood doll in its period box. Allan was a friend of Barbie. What is its value?

D Cheboygan, ich. M ANSWER: Who is Allan Sherwood? I confess I had no idea until I did research. Mattel introduced its Allan Sherwood doll in 1964, designed to be a buddy of Ken, share his clothing, and as a boyfriend for Midge. Allan lasted only two years.

A Ken redesign sealed Allan’s fate. Allan was revived briefly in December 2002 and part of Mattel’s Happy Family line.

By then, he was Midge’s husband and father of Ryan, Jenny, and Nikki. Their happiness ended quickly as little was done to develop the line.

Allan Sherwood was named after Allan Segal, the husband of Barbara Handler, the daughter of Mattel’s founder.

Alan and Barbara divorced in the 1960s, which may explain why Allan Sherwood had a short initial life.

Allan’s limited appearance in the Barbie line impacts his secondary market value. An eBay listing for a 1964 Allan in his period box and with his striped shirt has a “Buy It Now” price of $39.99. Another eBay seller lists another example with a “Buy It Now” price of $29.95. Barbie may be a “Bil-

lion Dollar Baby,” but Allan is not even a fifty bucker.

Manufactured homes offer affordable way to own a home If homeownership feels like it’s beyond your reach, don’t throw in the towel just yet on the American dream. In the face of an ever-widening housing affordability gap, there are options you may not have considered, say experts.

“Manufactured homes are commonly available at lower monthly payments than what it costs to rent, providing an affordable path to homeownership for millions of Americans,” says Richard Jennison, president and CEO of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI).

Indeed, nationwide, there are 8.6 million manufactured homes, representing nearly 10 percent of the nation’s housing stock, according to MHI.
