Vecchio takes the helm at Olean High By CHUCK POLLOCK Olean Times Herald
OLEAN — It was Monday, Aug. 15, the first day of football practice for New York state high school football teams, and Mike Kane was in his car headed for Cleveland to watch the Red Sox and Indians. “It was the first time in 39 years that I didn’t have to be there for the opening of practice,” said Kane, who retired as an Olean High teacher in June and coached his final football game for that school last October. He added, without a trace of misgiving, “I also thought
it was best to be away.” Kane, who taught government and social studies, and his wife Val, an elementary school teacher at Hinsdale, ended their careers together. Mike’s retirement concluded his 27-year stint as Huskies coach and and handed the designation as the Big 30’s longest-tenured football mentor to Portville’s Gary Swetland, starting his 25th season. But Olean didn’t have to look far for Kane’s successor … he was at the other end of his headphones. The job went to Huskies defensive coordinator Phil Vecchio, who played
four seasons for OHS and coached it for 21. Kane, who taught Vecchio seventh-grade social studies and was an OHS assistant during his playing days, loved the order of succession. “‘Vec’ was the obvious choice,” concluded Kane, who finished with a 126106-3 record and a couple of Section 6 titles. “He’s an Olean High graduate, he loves the school, he’s wellqualified and has a lot of experience.” Vecchio, 47, conceded the position was on his wish list. “It’s a dream job … something I’ve always wanted
to do,” he said. “There’s a love for Olean football that’s carried on for 30 years. In 1986 I was a senior captain for Mike Taylor and 30 years later the head coach is me ... I just have a love for it.” After he graduated from Alfred University with a degree in secondary education and a minor in coaching — “I always kind of had the idea that’s what I wanted to do” — Vecchio began a mostly frustrating job search. “I applied everywhere,” he said. “Olean numerous times, Randolph, Gowanda, Arkport, Allegany, Ellicottville, but for whatever reason, it just didn’t
work out.” Thus, Vecchio began a seven-year stint as a substitute teacher in the Olean system with Kane immediately hiring him as a football assistant. Eventually he was hired as a physical education teacher at Archbishop Walsh, which had dropped football, and continued to coach at OHS. “I was trying to figure out what to do with my life,” he recalled, “and that was the year Mark Blecha left Olean and took the (head coaching) job at Franklinville and Please see Vecchio, page 22

QUICK HITS The Gators lose a host of quality skilled players to graduation, including 1,000yard rusher Zach Bierfeldt and quarterback Holden Farr, but still return a solid core, highlighted by bruising linebacker Marcus Grove and linemen Jake Giardini and Pat Walsh. A-L lists justs five seniors on the roster, which under under normal circumstances might have a coach worried. But Paul Furlong has been touting his junior class since before last season and believes his juniors will be most critical to the Gators’ success this year. A-L has plenty of holes to fill offensively, but is confident it has a crop of capable of replacements at QB and RB. Among the players it might depend on to fill Bierfeldt’s shoes are Tom Moran and Jeremy Flick.

The Gators made one of the biggest jumps of any team in the Big 30 last season, going from 0-8 in 2014 to 4-4 and qualifying for the Section 6 Class C playoffs in 2015. Though A-L was handled by Bennett, 48-7, in sectionals, its improvement was hard to ignore. It went from averaging only six points per game in ‘14 to 25 last fall. Behind a group of veteran skilled players, it started off an impressive 4-1 before ending the season on a three-game slide.

With few changes, Big 30 to have similar look in ’16 By J.P. BUTLER
Olean Times Herald
You know the saying, “the more things change, the more they stay the same”? Well, it’s especially true for the coming Big 30 football season. In most years, change seems to be prominent in the Big 30, whether on the coaching front, the league landscape or in the guard of the top programs in the area. This year, however, there hasn’t been a whole lot of movement in any one area, and during a time in which that movement can often be negative — a dropped program, the rearrangement of leagues due to a decreasing number of teams, the ongoing numbers game — maybe we should take some time to appreciate that. Consider the following: n For the first time since 2012, the Big 30 has the same number of teams from the year before — 22. In two of those seasons,
there were mergers — Ridgway with Johnsonburg and Franklinville with Ellicottville — lowering the number of area programs. Last year, St. Marys was readmitted after an eightyear hiatus. n There were only two coaching changes this year — Scott Burnside, who replaces Mike Kunes at Cameron County and Phil Vecchio, who takes over for the previous longest tenured coach, Mike Kane at Olean High. In 2014, there was only one coaching change, but last year there were four and in 2013 a whopping eight. n There weren’t a ton of modifications to any of the leagues involving Big 30 teams. Sure, there were a few. The biggest is probably the fact that Bradford, a Class AAA school, is joining the Allegheny Mountain League, comprised almost exclusively of Class A programs. And yes, there are a couple of changes within Class D, as there almost always seems to be — Maple Grove is no longer merged with Chautauqua Lake and is back down in D, while Silver Creek is down from C and Westfield/Brocton is up with Fredonia in Class B. That makes it an eight-team league again. But even that’s a little bit of a cry from some of the bigger changes of the last
few years, when there was one league, but two different playoff classes and two different leagues — a D and DD — entirely. Beyond that, most of the Big 30’s opponents for 2016 remain the same. n There will be more familiar faces playing on the weekend than usual. In most years, there are generally three to four returning Big 30 all-stars from the year before. It’s with that group that the new Player of the Year watch normally begins. But this fall, six Big 30 all-stars return: Eric DeLong (Kane), John Eakin (Bradford High), Toby Fox (Kane), Preston Hutchinson (Franklinville/Ellicottville), Jake Smith (BolivarRichburg) and Aaron Wolfinger (Coudersport). n By the looks of things, many of the same teams that were successful in 2015 appear to be headed for another strong season this fall. n Kane returns a host of players from a team that went 12-1, won both the AML and District 9 Class A titles and advanced to the PIAA state playoffs. The same can be said for Cuba-Rushford, which went 6-1 in the regular season, Franklinville/Ellicottville, which went 8-2 and captured the Section 6 Class D championship, and Allegany-Limestone, which finished 4-4 after a 4-1 start
and advanced to the Section 6 Class C playoffs. Yes, the topography of the Big 30 will look largely the same as it did last season. That doesn’t mean, however, that the area football scene will be devoid of any new and interesting wrinkles. For the second time since 2013, the historic OleanBradford rivalry is back on hold, and could be for some time depending on how long the Owls remain in the AML. In its current setup, Bradford, like all AML teams and many other area programs, has room on its slate for league games only. This makes it impossible to schedule its longest running rival as it had been able to in years past. In 2013, the teams had to postpone the rivalry due to a different scheduling conflict. It was the first time they hadn’t played each other since a three-year stretch from 1993-95. While unfortunate, that snag — and the trickledown effect of Class D teams only being able to play each other — created what actually might be an even more intriguing schedule for Olean High. This year, the Huskies will play non-league games against a pair of Big 30 opponents, meeting Salamanca in Week 7 for the first time since 1994
and opening at AlleganyLimestone, whom, to both coaches’ knowledge, the Huskies have never met — pre- or post-merger. Excitement for the latter has been brewing for weeks; according to one person connected with that game, they’re looking for a way to add more seating to Fred Grace Field due to the expected turnout. Here are a couple of other items to pay attention to in 2016. n In the three years before last, Randolph won 36 of 39 games en route to three straight New York State Class D championships. In 2015, the Cardinals weren’t the mighty team they were before, losing three games in that season alone, including a firstround playoff defeat to Westfield/Brocton. Still, though, Randolph is a ridiculous 30-4 under Brent Brown, and returns a handful of key players from a “down” 5-3 team. Will the Cardinals be able to bounce back with another deep playoff push this year? n It’s the proverbial elephant in the Allegheny Mountain League’s room. For the last two years, the AML South has dominated the North, creating a clear line of demarcation Please see Overview, page 24

Coach Smith speaks: “The kids who have shown up for speed training twice a week will show that we’re faster than we were a year ago. “We went through a few years in the past where our numbers were an issue. This year, we have 40 kids signed up. “Most of the kids who we project as starters up front played on the line a year ago, so we know what we have. “There are a few unknowns coming in and if they can play, it will give us some depth up front.” “I want to see this group of seniors step up and give us leadership. This is their team. It’s time for them to make their mark. “Switching from being an assistant for the last 15 years to being the head coach, I had to learn a little bit about delegating responsibilities to the assistants.”

A look at top players to watch in 2016 By J.P. BUTLER
Olean Times Herald
In a way, it’s a harder team to make this year. Every August, the Times Herald sports staff puts together a list of the top returning — and what we feel are now the best — players in the Big 30. The resulting “Players to Watch” story has become a staple in the annual Football Edition, alongside our predictions piece, overview and team capsules. It started as a Top 5 list to go with the 2012 edition theme of the same designation. And while other “Top 5s” from that year haven’t continued, our player piece lives on, in mostly its original format. Since its inception, there have been no more than four returning Big 30 allstars, meaning those were the guaranteed spots on the list. This year, however, the Big 30 welcomes back six all-stars, meaning more occupied spaces and less room for other returning players. Hence, it’s more difficult to earn the distinction. Again in 2016, our players are listed in groups of five, much like a collegiate basketball league’s preseason all-conference teams. There are three teams and a host of honorable mentions making for a total of 35 players.
Marcus Grove
Preston Hutchinson
Toby Fox
Here is how those teams broke down this year (with players on each team listed in no particular order):
winner, and one of the few players over time to earn a key distinction as an underclassman. The senior was a force at linebacker, registering 50 solo tackles in the regular season, including 11 for loss, with six sacks and a forced fumble. He also rushed for 737 yards and six touch-
downs. DeLong did all of that for a Kane team that went 12-1 last season and captured both the Allegheny Mountain League and District Class A 9 titles. He was one of three Wolves named to the inaugural D9sports.com All-District 9 football team.
FIRST TEAM Eric DeLong, junior, RB-LB, Kane DeLong, last year’s Big 30 Defensive Player, is the lone returning major award
Preston Hutchinson, senior, OL-LB, Franklinville/ E’ville Hutchinson was one of the top all-around players for an F-E team that went 8-2 and captured the Section 6 Class D championship last season. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound senior made the Big 30 allstar team as an offensive lineman last season, and will anchor that group for the Titans this year. He also had 42 solo tackles, including five for loss, as a linebacker. Hutchinson is one of three returning F-E players who were named first-team All-Western New York Class D last season. QUICK HITS As a first-season member of the Allegheny Mountain League, the Owls will play a schedule more suited to better fan support. “The mere proximity of games now is going to mean something,” Coach Jeff Puglio said. “When we played a Conneaut, we had to leave school at 1:30 in the afternoon and when that happens, you just now you’re not going to get much fan support. “Then, on the other side of the game, we wouldn’t get back to Bradford until two o’clock in the morning. That makes for one very long day. “As young as we were, we only used a basic package on both sides of the ball. Now that we have some experience, we can start to build on our offensive and defensive looks.”

A downward trend at Bradford continued a year ago when the Owls posted a dismal 1-9 mark, losing six games in which the defense allowed 50 points or more. Still, a 34-7 victory over Brookville in a non-league game in Week 9 gave coach Jeff Puglio reason to laud the fact that mistakes were being eliminated as the season went along.

Kane, C-R lead 2016 TH predictions By J.P. BUTLER
Olean Times Herald
It had become a staple of the Football Edition’s predictions piece. Historically, when the Times Herald sports department met to make its prognostications for the coming high school football season, it almost always put a team on the so-called hot seat -that is, it picked that team to go undefeated. In recent years, we’ve fared well enough with those selections. We hit on three in a row from 2011-’13, with Pioneer (2011), Port Allegany (2012) and Randolph (2013) all ultimately running the table. We just missed in 2014, with the Cardinals finishing a game short of another unbeaten season. Last year, we made it three seasons in a row of going with Randolph. It made sense considering the Cardinals had won 35 of their previous 36 games, won three-straight state championships and seemed poised for another big year in 2015. And yeah, we were off -- perhaps it was unfair to continue putting the onus on Brent Brown’s club -- but the perennial Class D power still went 5-2 with a one-possession loss along the way. This year, however, we’ve elected NOT to put anybody on the hot seat. It’s the first time in years -- maybe in this millennium, according to some of the older staffers -- that we’ve gone without one … that we haven’t ratcheted up the pressure for somebody. It’s not that we think the Big 30 is lacking in quality teams this year; we expect a handful of our area programs to contend for a league title and therefore be right up there in record. It’s just there doesn’t appear to be that one lights-
out team this season. And more than that, the depth in some of these leagues will likely make it impossible for any of our teams to come out totally unscathed. Take some of the teams that we expect to be pretty good this season: Kane, Cuba-Rushford, Franklinville-Ellicottville and Randolph. Kane went undefeated last year, but will have to contend with the tough Allegheny Mountain League South again this season, which now includes Bradford High. CubaRushford should be good, but loses running back Jake Jones and still has to prove it can beat Avon. F-E and Randolph might repeat as contenders in Class D, but have to deal with an unforgiving slate, which now includes Maple Grove, broken off from Chautauqua Lake and back in Class D, and Silver Creek, down from Class C. Tough to go unbeaten against that lot. Of course, the fact we’re going without a hot seat selection has only masked the reality that we had another down year with our predictions last fall. But before we proceed, here’s a look at how everyone did vs. where we picked them to finish in 2015: Team Predicted Actual Allegany-Limestone 3-4 4-3 Bolivar-Richburg 1-6 3-4 Bradford High 2-7 1-8 Cameron County 4-5 2-7 Cattaraugus-LV 5-2 3-4 Coudersport 3-6 5-4 Cuba-Rushford 5-2 6-1 Elk County Catholic 4-5 7-2 Franklinville/Ellicottville 4-3 6-1 Kane 6-3 9-0 Olean High 3-3 1-5 Otto-Eldred 2-7 1-8 Pioneer 2-4 2-4 Port Allegany 3-6 6-3 Portville 4-3 4-3 Randolph 7-0 5-2 Ridgway 5-5 4-6 Salamanca 2-5 0-7 Sheffield 2-7 0-9 Smethport 5-4 3-6 Wellsville 1-6 1-6 *St. Marys’ record was not predicted in 2015 as it was a late re-addition to the Big 30

Yeah, we got our undefeated pick, Randolph, wrong, but that’s not the only place where we erred. For starters, we guessed the correct records for just three teams -- Portville (4-3), Pioneer (2-4) and Wellsville (1-6) -- which is actually up one from a year ago, but down four from when we had a pretty good year in 2014. Additionally, we were within one game either way for only eight of 21 teams. That number was only 10 last year, but had ranged from 11 to 16 in the six years prior. The thing is, we weren’t egregiously wrong last year. We were within two games for 10 teams, meaning we had an idea of where a team was going to finish, but they were either slightly better or a little bit worse than we thought they’d be. We were only way off
(three-or-more games) on three teams, all of which we underestimated. And so now would probably be a good time to issue an apology to Port Allegany, which we picked to go 3-6, but actually went 6-3 and advanced to the AML title game; Kane, which we thought would be good, at 6-3, but actually ran the table, and ECC, which we picked to struggle at 4-5, but actually went 7-2. The number on which we were far off the mark last year? Seven, in what ended up being a forgettable year for both us and most of the Big 30. For us, one of the biggest contributing factors in a down year is having a tough time predicting the AML. The North has been wide open in recent years, and we’re oftentimes armed with little information on the fringe schools in the South. Last year, we were within a game for just two teams in that league -- Otto-Eldred and Ridgway. This year, we think Coudersport will win the North and Curwensville will edge Kane in the South. A year from now, we’ll see how we did in the AML and other leagues. But until then, it’s up to the coaches and players to either live up to the expectations or prove us wrong. Here are our predictions for 2016.

Scott Burnside, an assistant under former varsity boss Mike Kunes, takes over with 12 lettermen, including six starters, returning from last season. Getting junior Ethan Visley back from a mid-season injury a year ago will hopefully shore up the skill positions where the Red Raiders will be inexperienced this coming year. Burnside, who graduated from CCHS in 1991, believes the Red Raiders will be able to platoon a handful of players up front. A key will be to put some points on the scoreboard early to keep the defense off the field as much as possible.
2015 IN REVIEW The Red Raiders opened with four straight blowout losses in crossover games against teams from the AML South. In the divisional portion of the slate, Cameron picked up wins over Sheffield and Otto-Eldred.

A look back: Kane, F/E led the way in ’15 By JIM MELARO
Olean Times Herald
The Big 30 crowned a pair of high school football champions at the end of the 2015 season. Granted neither of them went on to claim a state title as Randolph had done the three previous years. Still, Kane High School and the co-op squad formed with the union of Franklinville and Ellicottville, each won a plaque. The Wolves captured the District 9 Class A crown while the Titans won the Class D title in Section 6. Kane reached the District 9 title round for the fourth year in a row and, after bowing to Karns City in back-to-back appearances in the Class AA final, made it two titles in a row after beating Brockway, 21-17, for its second consecutive Class A championship. The Wolves (12-1) saw their season end one week later in a 21-6 loss to Farrell in the quarterfinal round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament. “THE KEY to our success in the playoffs over the past few years starts with the closeness of the guys on the team,”Kane coach Todd Silfies said. “Everybody buys into the system and the players and coaches have developed a certain level of trust and respect for each other. “Of course, another big factor is seeing the kids worry less about doing things for themselves and more about doing things because they owe it to their teammates and coaches to be as prepared as possible. “They look to their left and right and they want to be as strong as that guy … they want to be just as disciplined and when you
have all of that, there’s a trust that starts to develop,” Silfies said. “There’s no secret about it, teams have seen that approach from us each of the last four years, regardless of what players take the field. By the time playoffs roll around, we’ve been able to put a pretty competitive brand of football on the field.” Franklinville/Ellicottville won the Section 6 Class D crown with a 34-7 win over Frewsburg. A week later, the Titans’ season ended in a 22-12 loss to Bishop Kearney in the New York State Class D Far West Regional. For the Titans of coach Chad Bartoszek to win the sectional title, several things had to fall into place. Playing for just the second season under a co-op agreement that actually also includes student-athletes from the West Valley school district, Bartoszek will tell you it took a healthy dose of confidence as well as a timely knockdown punch to set the 8-2 Titans on the right path a year ago. The Titans got off to a very unexpected start with a 32-12 win over Randolph, handing the Cardinals just their fourth regular season loss in four seasons. And after blanking Cattaraugus-Little Valley, 20-2 in Week 2, it appeared F/E was poised to make a strong run at an undefeated regular season. But just seven days later,
Times Herald file A Kane running back is tackled from behind by a Port Allegany defensive lineman during last November’s Allegheny Mountain League Championship game at Kane. The Wolves won, 21-0.
the Titans fell at home to Portville, 28-20. “We actually needed that result to happen,” Bartoszek said. “We got a huge confidence boost when we beat Randolph in our opener. “But I could tell after the Catt-LV game that my guys were getting a little too cocky. The loss to Portville put them back in line. They were just starting to get too full of themselves and they needed a jolt back to reality. “Football is not an easy Please see Playoffs, page 18

FALCONS QUICK HITS Coach Cary speaks: “Ultimately, these guys have three goals ... to win the AML North, get to the AML title game and win that and then to get into the District championship game and proceed from that “And they have to know that if we are going to attain those goals, then unselfish football has to be our No. 1 priority. “One of our problems last year is the fact that our defense was on the field an awful lot, especially against teams that liked to pound the ball. “We know and understand that we have to run the ball so we can control the clock We feel that we can move the ball big chunks if we have to. But I also want to feel comfortable in knowing we can gain one or two tough yards when we need them.”

Co-op Section 6 teams add challenge in schedule making By JIM MELARO
Olean Times Herald
You don’t have to have a doctorate in math from Cal Tech, but it wouldn’t hurt. Trying to set up schedules is hard enough, outlining a path for the postseason is even tougher. Welcome to Section 6 high school football. “We didn’t get confirmation on some co-ops until as late as March,” Section 6 football chairman Ken Stolt noted of the difficulty his office had in determining schedules and playoff scenarios for the 2016 football
season in Western New York. “Had we known back in December or January, it would have been a whole lot easier to make up the schedules, especially in a case where we might want to work with a team from Section 5. “But it is what it is. We managed to fight through the obstacles. One of the hangups was the fact that some co-op agreements were waiting for appeals to clear. Once that happened, we could start setting up the league alignments.” All you really need to know about how confusing it can be to set up schedules and playoff formats for Section 6 is this one fact. This season, 33 different school districts combine in one way or another to form 13 teams. Enrollment figures get bounced around and teams end up getting shuffled into different leagues on a yearly basis. “There’s no doubt all the combined teams make it a little tougher to set things up,” Stoldt said. “It just makes it easier to do if we can have everyone’s decision earlier. “You want to try to be as
fair as possible when dividing the teams into various divisions. I think we have some very competitive divisions this year.” The playoff format? “We have two divisions in Class AA, A and C,” Stoldt noted. “We have three in Class B and one for Class D. “So even though it took some planning, we were able to come up with what we feel is an equitable way to determine the eight playoff seeds in each class.” Here’s how Section 6 will break down its playoff scenario for the campaign. IN CLASSES AA, A and C, the top four teams from each division will qualify for the Sectional playoffs beginning in Week 8. The 5th & 6th place finishers qualify for the Chuck Funke Memorial Classic Games. Week 8 will be a quarterfinal round for the sectional playoffs and a semifinal for the Funke Classic games. Week 9 will be a semifinal round for the sectional play-offs and the final in the Funke Classic. Week 10 will be the sectional final game. All games except the finals will be played at the
higher seed. All teams not qualifying for sectional or Funke Classic Games will be matched up for week 8 and be based on divisional records. IN CLASS B, the top eight teams qualify for the sectional playoffs. Because the Bs are split into three divisions, the playoff seeds will be determined as such — seeds 1, 2 and 3 will go to the division winners, seeds 4, 5 and 6 to the second-place teams and the seventh and eighth seeds will go to the two third-place teams with the best records. In case of ties, the seeding criteria will follow these tiebreakers: League record. (win / loss percentage) Point differential average (total points earned, 20-point max per game) divided by total league games. Fewest points allowed average Strength of schedule Coin toss. Teams 9-12 qualify for the Chuck Funke Memorial Classic games. The ninth
seed will go to the remaining third place finisher. Seeds 10-12 will be comprised of the fourth place finisher in each division. The weekly postseason will follow the same course as Classes AA, A and C. CLASS D has only one division with eight teams and all qualify for the Section 6 tournament. After the Week 8 quarterfinals in Class D, the top two seeded losers will meet for the Chuck Runke Memorial Class D crown. All of the Funke Classic championship games will be played on Thursday, Nov. 20. The Section 6 finals will be played at the former Ralph Wilson Stadium the following weekend. Section 6 will also host the West Regionals at the same site on Week 11. “The state approved that everybody could play 10 games a year ago,” Stoldt noted. “And while a lot of schools say they would rather not play once they are eliminated, some will gladly schedule that extra week looking to the future, Please see Section 6, page 15

REBELS QUICK HITS The Rebels lose last seasons’s Big 30 Player of the Year, running back Jake Jones, who carried C-R at times, rushing for over 1,600 yards and 25 touchdowns. Jones will be playing at Alfred University in the fall. Coach Chris Fee is hoping the tandem of Trevor Smith, who started alongside Jones last year, and rising junior Ben Siegel can fill the void. The Rebels had arguably the best line in the Big 30 last season, which helped Jones have the season he did. They return three key pieces to that unit: seniors Dylan Jones, Jacob Hardy and Anthony Barksdale, who all check in at over 245 pounds. Fee will expect more of junior quarterback Dawson Sanderson, who started every game as a sophomore last year.

2015 IN REVIEW The Rebels enjoyed one of the best regular seasons in the Big 30 last year, going 6-1 — with their only loss coming in Week 3 to Avon — while averaging 43 points per game and eclipsing 60 in consectutive weeks. Behind running back Jake Jones, C-R secured a home playoff game. The only downside to the season was that the Rebels lost their sectional opener, falling 38-14 to a Bishop Kearney team that has since moved up to Class C.

2015 record 7-3 overall (6-2 league)
Last season, ECC opened practice with 22 players. By the schedule’s end, the Crusaders were down to 16, two over the Pennsylvania minimum, due to injuries. This season, coach Tony Gerg welcomed 32 players to the opening of practice, though seven of them are freshmen. Still, of the other 25, nearly half -12 -- are seniors. “Because of that,” Gerg said, “expectations are high. But I’ve had to rein them in and make them realize this is a long season and that a lot can happen ... including injuries. “Last year we had early injuries where we lost three or four starters and were in a situation where, near the end of our win streak -- against Curwensville and Ridgway -- we were fortunate to pull those games out.”

QUICK HITS Coach Chad Bartoszek hopes the Titans can keep their upward trend going after his first coaching sectional title. While the Titans lose four Big 30 All-Stars to graduation, they return 11 starters including Preston Hutchinson, an allstar guard. The Titans will look to contend again in Section 6 Class D, hoping for a return to Ralph Wilson Stadium. “I’m very happy we’ve got a great group,” Bartoszek said. “It’s exciting to see them get in that picture and think, ‘Holy cow, we’ve got a lot of people coming back.’ We’re excited. “We got a taste of how exciting it could be to play into November and to really stand out among the teams in the section. It was a cool feeling and something I think the kids were excited to be a part of.”

KANE
WOLVES QUICK HITS
2015 IN REVIEW Kane came as close to a perfect season as could be expected. In going 12-1, the Wolves roared through the Allegheny Mountain regular season 8-0, six of those victories by 26 points or more. Then came a 21-0 win over Port Allegany in the AML title game. Wins over Port A, Curwensville and Brockway produced a D-9 crown before a 21-6 loss to Farrell in the PIAA’s opening round.

^ Coach Todd Silifies 5th year (39-10)
2015 record 12-1 overall (8-0 league)
For all of Kane’s success last season — 12-1 record, Allegheny Mountain League and District 9 Class A titles — the Wolves graduated only six seniors. Gone are the uniquely talented Rolick twins — Shane and Tyler — who starred in Pennsylvania’s victory in the Big 30 All-Star Charities Classic, plus Jake Shrubb and Tyler Weidenhoff. Shrubb was the Unsung Lineman of the Year and he , both Rolicks and Weidenhoff were all selected to the Big 30 All-Star team. This season, Kane has 37 players grades 10-12, many of them starters from last year ’s impressive campaign. “Each year is different,” coach Todd Silfies said, “but these kids are used to success and high expectations.”

And as soon as you stop respecting it, it’s going to jump up and bite you.” “So as good as our opener was because it gave us all kinds of confidence, the loss was just as good because it sent everyone a reminder that they needed to maintain composure and stay focused. Little changes in Section 5 playoff format By SAM WILSON
of “first level points” make the playoffs and are seeded in that order. A win over a team with a higher classification than its own awards six points; a win over a team in its classification or lower awards five points. A loss to a team in its classification or lower negates five points and a loss to a higher classification team negates four points. Opponents from outside Section 5 are considered at the equivalent classification if they were in the section based on grade 9-11 enrollment. The Section 5 championships will once again be held in Rochester’s Sahlen’s Stadium, home of the Rochester Rhinos and Western New York flash pro soccer clubs, the weekend of Nov. 4-5. Section 5 champions will visit the former Ralph Wilson Stadium in the

The private Catholic school power that thwarted two of the Big 30’s best New York teams won’t be in Cuba-Rushford or Franklinville/Ellicottville’s paths this fall. Bishop Kearney, which defeated Cuba-Rushford in the Section 5 Class D quarterfinals and (Section 6 champion) Franklinville/ Ellicottville in the Far West Regional, has moved up to Class C. Under the Section 5 points system, Kearney was a No. 5 seed in the Class D playoffs despite a 6-2 record and visited C-R in the first round, a 38-14 Kings win. Three weeks later, after Kearney’s first Section 5 Class D championship, the Kings knocked off the Titans, 22-12. After making a change to combine Class D and DD into one D level before the 2015 season, little has changed in the Section 5 football playoff format. The top 8 teams in each classification, including both Class C (where Wellsville is classified) and D (BolivarRichburg, Cuba-Rushford), make the Section 5 playoffs. The next four teams in both classes make the Connors and Ferris Bowl bracket in all classes except Class D. The eight non-playoff D teams will comprise two Connors and Ferris Bowl brackets. “Except in Class D, I have two Connors and Ferris Bowls because there’s 16 teams,” Section 5 football chairman Dick Cerone said. “We have Bowl 1 and 2. That gives eight more teams a chance. We started that last year.” Classification standings, which determine playoff seeding, are based on a rating system. The eight teams with the highest amount

Far West Regional winners advance to the NYSPHSAA semifinals at Cicero-North Syracuse High School for the chance to play in the Carrier Dome for the state title Nov. 25-26. Caledonia-Mumford also rises from D to C while Lyons drops from C to D. In two new football mergers, Elba joins Oakfield (D) and Mount Morris joins Perry (D). 2015 record Olean has only one playoff berth in the last 11 years. The Huskies will rely on the athleticism of Garrett Boldt and Dylan Vincent in their pursuit of a turnaround. Last year, Boldt excelled after being given the starting quarterback job after two games, while the tough-running Vincent was hampered by a sprained ankle suffered in Week 1. With a roster of only 22

players, staying healthy may be the biggest key to success for OHS.
2015 IN REVIEW A last-place finish in Western New York Class B South brought an end to Mike Kane’s 27-year head-coaching career. Four of the Huskies’ losses were by double digits. A highlight was a 35-19 win at Bradford High following a bye week created by Eden canceling its varsity season. Olean sent Kane off with a 40-8 victory over Barker/RoyaltonHartland in his final game.

that stands today. In 2014, the South went a perfect 20-0 against the North, winning those games by an average score of 38-7 (or a total of 766-148). And it didn’t get much better last year. In 2015, the North went 1-19 against their league brethren, the lone victory Coudersport’s 13-7 triumph over Ridgway, and the deficits were much the same. The league plays interdivisional games over the first four weeks of the season, meaning the North is generally in a huge hole nearing the midway point of the campaign, and neither side has even begun to sort itself out. This year, the North’s coaches have ranged from believing their teams are ready to surprise a few foes from the South to acknowledging that once again those interdivisional games will be something “to get through.” We’ll see if the North can narrow the gap a little this fall. n Last year, not one but two Big 30 teams had pretty remarkable turnarounds from the season before. A year after both went winless at 0-8, Bolivar-Richburg won a pair of Section 5 bowl games to secure its first winning season (5-4) since 2007 and Allegany-Limestone started out 4-1 before earning a playoff spot and finishing the season 4-4. Both have high hopes again in 2016. The question is, who might be for a similar kind of turnaround this fall?

TERRORS QUICK HITS After a 2-8 finish, O-E has reasons to be optimistic heading into the 2015 season, starting with the fact it returns star running back Seth Drummond from a knee injury. Drummond missed a chunk of last season after going down in Week 5 with a torn ACL. He was a 1,000-yard rusher and a Big 30 all-star as a sophomore in 2014. The Terrors also return their quarterback, Seth’s brother Sawyer, a junior and a twoyear starter, and his top targets, senior Jacob VanScoter and junior Dylan Close. O-E, now healthy, is hoping to surprise some teams in the AML North this season and is looking for its first .500-orbetter finish since 2004 - when the Terrors went 5-5.

The Terrors struggled in their first year under Nick LaBella, starting off 0-7 en route to a 2-8 finish while losing by an average margin of 28-10 before a season-ending 41-13 victory over Cowanesque Valley. O-E lost its best player, RB Seth Drummond, to a knee injury early in the year. The good? It ended the AML season with a win over Sheffield and a close loss to Cameron Co.

QUICK HITS With a touted core and more size up front, Pioneer seeks a return to winning form in the always-tough Class B South Division. Back are 19 lettermen, six of whom started, led by reigning first-team all-league selection Jason Gauthier. Gauthier, Tyler Smith and Caleb Riordan were named to a preseason All-Western New York team for small schools by WGRZ-TV’s Dick Gallagher, while Todd Thompson is coming off a 764-yard rushing season. Behind an offensive line that could average 260 pounds tackle-to-tackle, Pioneer’s run game should be strong again, coach Jim Duprey believes. Four straight games against teams coming off playoff appearances make up the start of the Panthers’ schedule.

Other key returning receivers are senior Emile Frigon (18 catches, 243 yards) and senior tight end Ralph Pagliei (16 catches, 146 yards, one TD in seven games before season-ending injury). Etienne, a junior who did not play last year, had 30 catches for 329 yards and a pair of touchdowns as a sophomore in 2014. The running game should be solid, as two of the top rushers from last year – senior tailback Casey Bright and junior tailback Sammy Davis Jr. are back. Bright was second on the team with 592 rushing yards (three TDs) and Davis, plagued much of the year by injury, had 184 yards on just 27 carries (6.8 yards per attempt) in five games.

ALFRED — The Alfred University football team is looking to claim an Empire 8 Conference title and make a return to the NCAA championship tournament. Seventeen of 24 starters – eight each on offense and defense; one on special teams – return from a squad that went 8-3 in 2015, wrapping up the season with a win over Fitchburg (MA) State in an ECAC bowl game. The Saxons finished tied for third in the Empire 8 standings with a 5-3 mark. The 17 starters are among 26 returning letterwinners who will be joined by a host of talented newcomers. Among the returnees are six Empire 8 all-stars, including senior quarterback Tyler Johnson, a three-time allleague pick and the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year in 2013, and junior outside lineback-
er A.J. LiCata, who leads all returning players in tackles, tackles for loss, and forced fumbles. JOHNSON, a secondteam E8 selection in 2015, is coming off a year in which he had 2,599 yards of total offense, throwing for 1,936 yards and 16 touchdowns and running for a teamleading 663 yards and nine touchdowns. His protection should be excellent, as threefifths of the starting line, including senior All-Empire 8 Second Team tackles Kevin LaMarque and Nick Charlock, return, along with junior center Sean Murphy. Senior wideout Brendan Buisch (Hornell) leads a deep and talented receiving corps that welcomes the return of former starting receiver Rodney Etienne. Buisch led the team in recep-
BRIGHT AND Davis will be joined in the backfield by junior Maleke Fuentes (Olean), who moves from wide receiver to tailback. Fuentes is a talented runner, as evidenced by his freshman season of 2012, when injuries at the quarterback position had him lining up under center in the Wildcat formation. He finished the year second on the team in rushing attempts (72), yards (395) and touchdown runs (eight) and was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Year. As a wideout in 2015, Fuentes had 305 yards on the ground with six touchdowns. With 34 catches for 393 yards and three scores last year, he’ll be a passcatching threat out of the backfield or lined up as a receiver. LiCATA LEADS a defense that also brings back eight first-stringers. Inserted into the starting lineup starter midway through his freshman campaign of 2014, LiCata started as a sophomore last year, tally-
ing 101 tackles (14 for loss, 4 ½ sacks) an interception, two forced fumbles and two recoveries and earned honorable mention from the E8. Fellow junior outside linebacker Michael Joiner (40 tackles, two sacks) also returns. Three of four starters on the defensive line return, as does former two-time All-Empire 8 tackle Zach Brinkley (Brockway, PA), who missed the 2015 campaign with a season-ending injury suffered in the preseason. Brinkley, a senior, earned honorable mention from the E8 in 2013 and was a second-team pick in 2014, when he had 31 tackles and two fumble recoveries. He’ll rejoin an experienced line that includes senior end Charles Branwell, senior tackle Andy Miller and junior end Toby Hale. Branwell had 42 tackles
and shared the team lead in sacks (five) with Hale, who had 30 tackles and a teamleading four fumble recoveries. Miller, who missed a pair of games to injury, had 24 tackles (four for loss, three sacks) and forced a pair of fumbles. Three of four starters from the defensive backfield return, led by senior cornerback Shyheim Wingate. Wingate, after moving from safety to corner, finished 2015 with 53 tackles, nine pass breakups and a teamhigh four forced fumbles. Senior strong safety Liam Hobbins had 64 tackles and a pair of interceptions, while junior cornerback Jared Watkins had 45 tackles, two INTs and a team-leading 12 pass breakups. GATORS QUICK HITS Like a year ago, the Gators face low numbers, fielding a roster of 28 players, including nine freshmen. But unlike last season, Port Allegany’s lineup will feature plenty of new faces and players in new roles. Coach Justin Bienkowski faces a rebuild after losing 13 players to graduation. Only four starters return. “Not a single kid that will touch the ball this year touched the ball last year,” he said, noting the key losses of Tre Garzel, Jordan Seefeldt, Mac Tanner and Dylan Baumgarner. Senior Daniel Jordan, who suffered a knee injury as a sophomore and missed all of last season, will start at quarterback. The Gators’ lines should be strengths, led by TyDel Green and Jesse Rush.

A No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup could be ‘Game of the Century’ By RALPH RUSSO
AP College Football Writer
There are big college football games and then there are those that rise to the level of being called Game of the Century. To be one of those games, what's needed is a No. 1 and No. 2. The Associated Press poll has been ranking college football teams for 80 years, helping to set the agenda for the season and provide context for big games. A matchup of undefeated teams or rivals with winning records is appealing. Make it 1 vs 2 and now you have something special. Maybe even a Game of the Century. In 1966 Notre Dame and Michigan State played a Game of the Century that still holds up today. It produced a memorably unsatisfying result and led to a vote
in the AP poll that is still debated. College football in the 1960s began with an AP championship by Minnesota, its last before fading away as a Midwestern power, and ended with a Texas title, the last by an all-white team. In between, coach Bear Bryant's Alabama Crimson Tide was the most dominant team, winning three national titles. But the centerpiece was a 10-10 tie between the Fighting Irish and Spartans that put more focus than ever on before on who finished No. 1. There were nine 1 vs. 2 matchups before the Notre Dame-Michigan State game on Nov. 19, 1966. This was different. Television was now a part of the equation. The game was initially not scheduled to be televised nationally
because of restrictions about how many times each school could be on a national broadcast. Pressure from fans on the West Coast and down South helped persuade ABC to air the game everywhere on tape delay. It was the final regularseason game for Michigan State and second-to-last for Notre Dame. With the last poll still being taken before the bowls were played, it was apparent the winner would be in line for a national championship. The buildup was unprecedented. "There was too much emphasis on the game," said 89-year-old Roger Valdiserri, who was Notre Dame's sports information director in 1966. "We had press conferences every day. panthers QUICK HITS Coach Swetland speaks: “I think what’s going to be our strength this year is he fact that we have some returning experiences with our interior linemen. We have some skill positions that will be pretty good. “We need to sustain blocks longer, tackle better. Getting some explosive plays out of the backfield would be a big plus. Good teams find a way to do that. “We want to run the ball and stop the run. Heck, I think the San Francisco 49ers and the Buffalo Bills will tell you that. “For us to do that, we need to play together as a team. That’s something I talk to my guys about all the time. “You have to keep growing and getting better. When that stops, the season won’t last very long.”

Marcus Grove, senior, FB-LB, Allegany-Limestone Grove, as a junior, was one of the key reasons A-L was able to make such a noticeable leap, from 0-8 in 2014 to 4-4 and the Section 6 Class C playoffs last fall. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound wrecking ball anchored a defense that surrendered an average of just 15 points over the first five contests, as the Gators started 4-1. As the every-down fullback, he also helped pave the way for 1,000-yard rusher Zach Bierfeldt. Grove is a returning firstteam all-league linebacker. He was recently tabbed by WGRZ-TV as the preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year in Class C South. Jason Gauthier, senior, FB/LB, Pioneer Gauthier was a top defensive player for Pioneer last season, finishing second on the team with 54 tackles. A returning Class B South first-team all-star, the 5-foot-10, 195-pound senior
is now the Panthers’ best player, according to coach Jim Duprey, a tough middle linebacker who will likely be garnering his share of postseason accolades at year’s end. WGRZ agrees with the Pioneer head man; Gauthier was one of four Big 30 players, including three from Pioneer, named to the station’s 2016 preseason AllWestern New York small school team. Toby Fox, senior, OL/DL, Kane Following a monster junior season with the Wolves, Fox is perhaps the most decorated returning player in the Big 30. Like his teammate DeLong, the 240-pound lineman was a defensive standout in 2015, collecting 34 tackles, including six for loss and two sacks in the regular year, while helping to anchor a Kane ‘D’ that allowed just nine points per game. Fox was named to the Big 30 all-star team on defense at season’s end. He was also chosen to the D9sports.com All-District 9 team and was a Pennsylvania News Class A all-state honorable mention. SECOND TEAM Jake Smith, senior, RB-SS/LB, Bol.-Richburg Smith was a key player on a B-R team that went
from 0-8 in 2014 to 5-4 last year after winning the Section 5, Class D-2 Bowl championship. The 6-foot, 195-pound defensive back led the Wolverines with 100 combined tackles, including 22 for loss and one pick, and also set a team record for sacks in a season with 10. He was a Big 30 all-star on defense as a junior. John Eakin, junior, FB/LB, Bradford High One of two sophomores, alongside DeLong, to be named to the Big 30 all-star team, Eakin piled up 1,167 rushing yards — eighth best in District 9 — and eight rushing touchdowns, averaging an impressive eight yards per carry, while adding 64 tackles and two sacks on defense in 2015. Perhaps the Owls’ best overall player, Eakin’s contributions weren’t just limited to offense and defense. He was also a Pennsylvania News Class AAA all-state honorable mention at punter. Aaron Wolfinger, senior, RB-LB, Coudersport Wolfinger was one of the best all-around players for a Coudy team that went 5-5 in 2015 and should help make it one of the favorites in the AML North this season. A Big 30 defensive allstar as a junior, the 5-foot-9, 160-pound senior had 70
Big 30 football 2016 tackles, two forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries last year. He also contributed 325 rushing yards and two TDs on offense. Jon Ling, OL-LB, Randolph Following the graduation of Wesley Senn, Ling will anchor the offensive line on a Randolph team that should be in contention for a Class D title again this fall. A first-team WNY Class D selection last year, the 220-pound guard, who helped the Cardinals to a 5-3 mark last year, was named to the 2016 preseason All-Western New York team for small schools by WGRZ. Garrett Boldt, senior, QB-S, Olean High Boldt took over as starting quarterback in Week 3 last year, with Elijah Ramadhan switching places to wide receiver, and went 2-3 in that role while the Huskies finished 2-5 overall. A verbal commit to Division I Campbell University for baseball, Boldt has tremendous speed and won the Olean High School ’41-’42 Football Club’s George Burlingame MVP Award as a junior. THIRD TEAM Seth Drummond, senior, RB-LB, Otto-Eldred A Big 30 all-star and a 1,000-yard rusher as a sophomore before suffering a season-ending knee injury early last season. Brock Blecha, junior, QB-LB, Franklinville/ E’ville A returning WNY Class

Ange Costanzo, junior, RB-S, Kane A D9sports.com AllDistrict 9 selection who returns to a Wolves team in search of another AML title. Dylan Jones, senior, OL/LB, Cuba-Rushford A Livingston County Division II all-star selection who helps anchor a line that has produced three-straight seasons with a 1,000-yard rusher. 2015 IN REVIEW At first blush, Ridgway’s 4-6 season last fall was a disappointment. But the young rebuilding team got better as the season went along. Three of its losses were by a touchdown or less over a span of six weeks and the defeats by Coudersport (13-7), Elk County Catholic (2114) and Curwensville (26-20), if reversed, would have made for a rewarding campaign.

warriors QUICK HITS Coach Paul Haley says he and his staff feel much better-prepared in their second year leading the Warriors. He welcomes back most of last year’s team, including 11 players who started at least a game last year. Look for a faster-paced offense from the Warriors, who are home four of the first five weeks. “Across the board, everything,” Haley said of his team;s improvements. “How I want to do things, how I want to teach things. We’re going back to a defense we all know instead of trying something new, but we’re installing a whole new offense. We put so much time into the offense. Last year we were running stuff that we’ve always ran before but it didn’t fit our personnel. This year’s offense is going to fit our personnel better.”

2015 record 0-10 overall (0-8 league)
The numbers are indicting and last season’s 0-10 made them even worse. Over the last 32 years, Sheffield’s football team is 60-220-1, a dismal .214 winning percentage. Coach Dave Fitch admits the disaster of 2015 was a combination of the two leaders among his four seniors being lost to injury before the season, the loss of several Abraxas players to early release or quitting the team and the death of his father . “Once you start losing, it gets in your blood,” he said, “and you can’t come back from it the more you struggle.” Sheffield, again, has a team because of the courtappointed Abraxas players. The host school has 16 players (Pennsylvania mandates at least 14), Abraxas adds 14.
2015 IN REVIEW “The season was a disaster,” admitted coach Dave Fitch. “We played tough in the opener (12-0 loss to Ridgway), but then the wheels came off (eight of the nine other losses by an average of 38 points). We lost two of our four seniors — both lof them leaders — to injury before the season started. My father was dying and my head wasn’t in it. Then we lost some Abraxas kids...”

hubbers QUICK HITS Smethport loses a pair of three-year starters in the backfield, including Big 30 all-star Adam Shunk, who rushed for nearly 1,500 yards last season, but believes it can replace that production by committee. With no workhorse, the Hubbers plan on spreading the ball around more, and believe they have the personnel to be a more potent offense. Key to that will be the return of quarterback Austin Speedy, who started as a sophomore last year. Speedy will be expected to do more this season and could have a few more weapons at his disposal, including recievers Kevin Long and Bryce Hale. Smethport’s ‘D’ needs to get better. It allowed 36 or more points in six of nine games last year and an average of 30-plus each of the last two years.

2015 IN REVIEW For the fourth-straight year under Jim Berlin, the Hubbers flirted with .500, shaking off a rough 0-4 start to win threestraight in convincing fashion before dropping their final two of the season. After reaching the District 9 playoffs in each of Berlin’s first two years, Smethport has missed the postseason in each of the last two, going 7-11 in that stretch.
Rule change has coaches debating how often to retweet By STEVE MEGARGEE AP Sports Writer
A new NCAA rule change is catching some recruits by surprise while causing coaches to debate how much time they should spend on social media. Under the change that took earlier this year, athletic department staff members are allowed to retweet or show their approval of social media posts made by recruits. The policy change has been nicknamed "Click, Don't Type" because coaches still aren't allowed to add any sort of comment to a recruit's post. NCAA spokeswoman Emily James said the MidAmerican Conference proposed the rule change. Kristin Williams, the MAC's associate commissioner for institutional services, said the original idea from the league's coaches was a complete deregulation of social media usage. Williams said the idea was modified to the proposal that eventually passed because of administrative concerns that the initial recommendation "would turn into an absolute free-for-all." Many coaching staffs wasted no time capitalizing on the new policy. Tennessee football coach Butch Jones smiled and shook his right hand to jokingly symbolize how tired it had become from all the retweeting. "We're going to use it the best we can and not let it interfere with our current team or anything like that," Jones said. "I had to have my thumbs popped out a little bit." Some prospects were caught off guard by the rule change but concede how a retweet from a coach

or staffer might affect an uncommitted recruit's decision. "It would be cool to see a coach retweet one of your tweets or favorite one of your tweets because you know they're looking at you and seeing what you put on social media," said one 2017 recruiting prospect. Of course, that assumes the coaches are the ones actually doing the retweeting rather than delegating the responsibility. "I'm sure they feel pretty good when a college guy is retweeting their stuff, but is it really the (coach) or are they putting someone else in charge of handling that stuff?" said Murfreesboro (Tennessee) Oakland High coach Kevin Creasy, whose team includes two seniors who have committed to Southeastern Conference schools. "I don't know a lot of Division I head coaches sitting around that have time to retweet what a 16-year-old is putting out there. I feel like maybe it's helping our unemployment rate go down because somebody's being hired to do that."
Different coaches have responded differently to the new policy. Mississippi's Hugh Freeze said he personally didn't plan to retweet any posts from prospects, though a scan of social media accounts shows that some of his assistants have done so. "I think that's a poor reason to choose a school, because a coach retweeted something," Freeze said. "I'm not going to partake in that. Some of my coaches may, and I haven't instructed them one way or another on it. I could end up doing it, but I'm indifferent today." But Tennessee's staff was particularly active on social media as soon as the rule change took effect. Jones and his assistants immediately retweeted hundreds of posts from prospects, including some tweets in which recruits announced they had received offers from Tennessee or had committed there. "It's kind of a great way to start your morning off," Jones said. "Or at night, it's kind of my mental escape a little bit from football."

interest in that game." Michigan State received more than 600 requests for media credentials, Valdiserri said. "That was unheard of at the time," he said. Playing with a banged up team and confident a tie would be enough to hold on to the No. 1 ranking going into the Southern California game the next week, Fighting Irish coach Ara Parseghian played it safe with the ball in his own end of the field and mostly ran out the last 70 seconds of the game. As Parseghian suspected, Notre Dame held the top spot in the poll, thumped USC 51-0 the next week and won the championship. Michigan State was second and unbeaten Alabama third. The result of the game and the vote led Michigan State coach Duffy Daugherty to call for a major college football playoff — in 1966! Crimson Tide fans understandably felt slighted by the vote and wondered if AP voters from outside the region held the contentious politics of Alabama

Despite Alabama's success in the 1960s, the Tide was only voted No. 1 nine times, less than Texas (23), Southern California (19), Ohio State (17), Notre Dame (16) and Michigan State (13). BEST PROGRAMS Alabama appeared in 77.78 percent of all polls taken. Texas, 71.43 percent. Southern California, 64.29 percent. BEST RIVALRY Texas vs. Arkansas. While Southern Cal vs. UCLA was great, Frank Broyles's Razorbacks and Darrell Royal's Longhorns were at the top of the old Southwest Conference. Their famous 1969 game was a 1 vs. 2 matchup that effectively decided the national championship, with the help of President Richard Nixon. MAIN TAKEAWAY Notre Dame changed course and started participating in the postseason in 1968, the same season the AP decided for good that the final poll would be taken and national title awarded after the bowl games.

QUICK HITS Though back as a member of the Big 30 after several seasons of playing only one and sometimes none of that group’s opponents, the Flying Dutchmen again have no Big 30 foes this season. Gone are Bradford and city rival Elk County Catholic, both now in the Allegheny Mountain League. “I had hoped we could put together a District 9 league, but it failed this time, though I think it will eventually happen,” St. Marys coach Tony Defilippi said. “We like the KSAC because it’s such a strong league, but there’s also a lot of travel. “That’s fine for the varsity. But it’s tough when you’ve got JV games on Monday and junior high on Wednesday and there’s school the next day.”

lions QUICK HITS The Lions lose a solid core to graduation, including running back Ryan Dunham and linemen Austin Crawford and Tyler Brandes, and will be relying on a plethora of juniors and sophomores to fill new roles this season. A positive for Wellsville is that it returns seven players who made at least one start last year, including a host of skilled position players; among them, quarterback Colin Cook, who was thrust into the role as a freshman last season, running back Carter Hoffman, the team’s top player who rushed for 625 yards last season, and wideouts Seth Reeder and Aiden Cook. Young still, Wellsville has set reasonable goals for next season. One is to get the program’s first home win since 2013.

2015 IN REVIEW The Lions struggled for a second-straight season under Wayne Stonemetz, finishing 1-7 a year after going 0-8. Wellsville was able to beat Dansville on the road, 14-13, and hung tough in a 14-6 loss to Warsaw/Letchworth, but overall, it had a hard time competing in a tough Livingston County league, falling by an average margin of 42-10. The Lions have missed the playoffs in three-straight seasons following an appearance in 2013.
