BETH HUMAN is an English, Social Studies and Latin teacher at Thomas Jefferson School, and well as Assistant Director of College Counseling. She received her Ph.D. and M.A. in English from Saint Louis University, and a B.A. in English and History from Willamette University. Her scholarly research focused on ghosts in Early Modern historiography, as well as the mythological past as a tool for nation building. Beth began tutoring students for college entrance exams in 1997, and has continued ever since, both individually, in school settings, and through test prep companies.

She studied art history as an undergraduate and healthcare ethics in her graduate work, focusing on body image and eating disorders. As a native St. Louisan who attended and works in private schools, she is knowledgeable about secondary private schools in the area and the application process. She has been doing private SSAT tutoring and offering workshops since 2000.

MATTHEW TROUTMAN is the Associate Director of Academics at Thomas Jefferson School. He currently teaches math and science, from 7th grade to 12th grade (including AP courses). He received a Ph.D. and M.S. in Physics from Clemson University, an M.Ed. from Teachers College at Columbia University (expected 5/17), and a B.S. from Roanoke College. His previous research included studying planet formation, and he has worked at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He is passionate about exploring how students best learn through research-based teaching practices in order to create the best educative environment for students.

Description: The SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) is used by independent schools to assess the abilities of students applying for admission. This four-day workshop devotes a day to strategies for completing each section of the SSAT (quantitative, verbal, reading comprehension, writing). The fifth day is an optional practice test.

Description: Even though you’re not ready to take the ACT and SAT yet, there are still strategies and techniques you can start practicing!

Critical thinking, active reading, and a logical, methodical approach to questions are skills that you can hone now, and have ready when you do have to take college entrance exams. After all, practice makes perfect!

Before the course begins, students will complete and submit a sample exam, and will receive individuallytailored feedback on strengths and weaknesses. During the course, students will have an hour of practice each night, to further cement the strategies and concepts covered that day, and to prepare for the next day’s class. Following the course, students will receive a personalized action plan to use as they prepare for the test.

Description: This course will explore some of the big questions about space and our place in the universe: how did the Earth form? Is it likely that we will find evidence for life on other planets or moons? How might our species to venture out in the universe? What is the eventual fate of the universe? For students completing grades 5-7.

INTRO TO ROBOTICS

Monday-Friday / July 17-July 21 / 12:30pm-3:30pm / $200

For students who have completed grades 5 through 7.

Description: This course is designed for students who are interested in getting started in robotics or may want to get more experience, particularly if students are going to schools where a robotics program exists. We will begin by going through the principles of safety, design, building, and a bit of programming through a hands-on, problem-solving approach. By the end of the week students will complete a simple robot that they will be able to control and drive.

THE SCIENCE OF LEARNING Monday-Friday /July 31-Aug 4 / 9:00am-11:00pm / $250

For students who have completed grades 5 through 9.

Description: Just in time for the beginning of school, this course will examine how to take a students’ learning to the next level. Inspired by research, we will look at methods for how to best learn. This is not intended to provide strategies just to get an A (although we will discuss those), but instead provide methods to gain lasting, effective, and life-long knowledge and understanding through demonstrated, scientific research.

Description: What makes a monster a monster? Why were the Greek gods so petty? What exactly do you have to do to be a hero? And perhaps most importantly, why were ancient human beings so obsessed with magical apples? These are just a few of the questions we will consider in this course. Students will study Greek mythology, language and theatre, in an active, playful environment. With games, sports, and art, students will explore some of the foundational myths of western culture.
