Urbandictionary.com defines a Catfish as: someone who pretends to be someone they’re not using Facebook or other social media to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online romances. You may have noticed the Australian media has recently held a spotlight on the issue of internet fraud, specifically, internet dating fraud. It has become such a hot topic because so many of us are falling victim to scams, we need to raise awareness and learn how to protect ourselves. ith the increase in popularity of online dating and its use, there has also been an increase in mistreatment of online dating and its users. Online dating has potential for really helping people connect and making them happier. However, as with most things there are people out there that want to use things like online dating improperly in attempts to hurt people or further their own interests. This practice has become known as “catfishing� and it is becoming a real problem within the online dating community. The dangers of catfishing and its threats are prevalent and if you want to try to find happiness through online dating you must be aware of them and know how to avoid them While the goal of online dating is noble and it does indeed help many people find happiness, it has also brought about some unintended negative aspects. This is how catfishing came into existence. Catfishing is a term used for when people create false identities for social media platforms or online dating profiles. This is usually done to deceptively pursue online romances for some personal gain or other interest at the expense of the person they are catfishing. Catfishing became a popular term after it was used as the title for the 2010 documentary Catfish. The success of this movie led to an MTV series that focused specifically on different catfishing cases around the country. This series exposed how

She says that the victims often have low self-esteem and find themselves to be less attractive then the pictures of the fake pictures. The victim often projects all types of expectations on the catfish and becomes delusional. They’re so infatuated by the fantasy that they end up turning a blind eye to tips that they are in fact, being catfished. She gives us a short test to see if one is vulnerable to being a catfish victim. The test is 6 questions and if one scores 3 or more one is more susceptible to being a victim. I took the test myself and scored a 3 out of 6 which is somewhat alarming, but also helps explain a situation a got myself into a month ago. Psychologist Thea Hartley believes that the Catfish suffers from an attachment disorder. She says that all human beings have a need to feel secure and to be loved by another person. The normal person seeks this type of affection in natural ways like meeting someone, dating them, and becoming physically intimate with them. She suggests that the Catfish was most likely neglected in their childhood hence never really learning how to have an effective relationship.
