Workplace Motivation: Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic

It is easy to understand why a motivated workforce leads to greater success for a company. Motivated employees feel inspired and driven to do and accomplish more, making it important for managers to understand the factors that lead to better performance levels. Doing so contributes to an increase in the productivity of everyone in the organization. It is important to remember that understanding motivation in the workplace is not just about manipulating attitudes and behaviors. It is more about aligning the likes and interests of employees and customers with that of the organization’s. There are two types or sources of motivation: Intrinsic and Extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is the type of motivation rooted from within. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, means that the person’s drive comes from the outside. Brad Montgomery

Intrinsic Motivation This is the internal desire to accomplish a certain task. Motivation occurs mainly because the work results are done in accordance with the person’s belief system or fulfill a desire. Deeprooted drives have the highest motivational power. This type of motivation comes with a complete absence of any external pressure to perform well. One common example of intrinsic motivation is social contact and status. People need to have social interactions and the desire to feel important. Other examples include power or the desire to have influence, independence or the need to feel unique, and curiosity, the desire to be knowledgeable. Extrinsic Motivation Extrinsic motivation means that a person’s drive or desire to perform is manipulated by an external source. It is important to note, though, that even though the motivations come from outside, the result for completing the task will still be rewarding.

This type of motivation is external in nature. The most popular type of external motivation is money. Other examples include awards, bonuses, benefit packages, and organized activities. Extrinsically motivated people focus on the financial gains, perks, and benefits that can fulfill their needs and wants.

Managers and leaders also play a big role in boosting employee motivation. The employer needs to work with employees to weave their individual needs, including personal goals and career aspirations. This should be aligned with the business’s goals of achieving positive results and higher performance levels.
