Hear The Beep Where You Sleep Fire Prevention Week - Oct. 4-10, 2015

Kids! It’s Fire Prevention Week, Sparky’s favorite time of year. Join Sparky the Fire Dog, and learn all about smoke alarms and why it is so important to have them in every bedroom. On his special kid’s web page, you'll find activity sheets, videos, E-cards and more. Keep your family safe with a working smoke alarm in every bedroom. Join Sparky at www.sparky.org. Chicago in Ruins sketch by Theo. R. Davis

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration which began on October 8th and killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. According to popular legend, the fire broke out after a cow - belonging to Mrs. Catherine O'Leary - kicked over a lamp, setting first the barn, then the whole city on fire. Chances are you've heard some version of this story yourself; people have been blaming the Great Chicago Fire on the cow and Mrs. O'Leary, for more than 130 years. But recent research by Chicago historian Robert Cromie has helped to debunk this version of events. Like any good story, the 'case of the cow' has some truth to it. The great fire 10 • October 2015 / www.flaglerparent.com

almost certainly started near the barn where Mrs. O'Leary kept her five milking cows. But there is no proof that O'Leary was in the barn when the fire broke out or that a jumpy cow sparked the blaze. Mrs. O'Leary herself swore that she'd been in bed early that night, and that the cows were also tucked in for the evening. But if a cow wasn't to blame for the huge fire, what was? Over the years, journalists and historians have offered plenty of theories. Some blamed the blaze on a couple of neighborhood boys who were near the barn sneaking cigarettes. Others believed that a neighbor of the O'Leary's may have started the fire. Some people have speculated that a fiery meteorite may have fallen to earth on October 8, starting several fires that day - in Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as in Chicago.

When it comes to smoke alarms, it’s about “location, location, location” The key message of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 4-10, is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is excited to share this important information. Visit NFPA's "Smoke Alarm Central" for more information by going to www.npfa.org. Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. In fact, having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of life threatening injury and death in a reported fire in half!

How Martial Arts Combats Bullying

by Kerrie McLoughlin

October is National Bullying Awareness Month and for those parents seeking a viable method for their children to effectively protect themselves. Martial Arts may be the answer you’re looking for. According to StopBullying.gov, a study found that approximately 49% of kids in 4th through 12th grade said they had been bullied at least one time in the previous month. Bullying can lead to low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, poor performance in school and, in some extreme cases, even suicide. Where is bullying happening? It’s happening most often at school, including at recess and on the school bus, but school isn’t the only place. It also occurs where kids are gathering in large groups, like at amusement parks, block parties, campgrounds and swimming pools. And of course we can’t forget about cyberbullying, which includes using cell phones and computers as ways to bully with words and spread untrue words and embarrassing photos. 12 • October 2015 / www.flaglerparent.com

So what can we, as parents, do about this widespread problem? Well, it turns out martial arts is a great place to start. Of course, martial arts can’t necessarily tackle the cyberbullying issue, but it can give our kids the self-confidence they need to handle people who are not treating them well in a specific situation. Lindsey Watts, mom of a daughter who has been in martial arts for four years, says, “Martial arts gives kids discipline and teaches them respect. They learn self-control, perseverance and integrity. They learn to help build a more peaceful world.” One mother shared a sad situation that happened to her son, “My son was in 2nd grade when he was being bullied. We had no idea it was going on; we just knew that something wasn’t right ...” Her son ended up bullying another child and was sent to see the

principal, where the story came out that a boy at recess, someone her son called a friend, had been bullying him. Later other issues came out, like that he had been pushed, tripped and poked. “We then realized our good-natured son … may be setting himself up for more bullying. Our son was very shy, but just wanted everyone to like him so he befriended everyone.” Dave Kovar, founder of Martial Arts Against Bullying (MAAB) and life-long martial arts professional, shares on his website DoneWithBullying.com, “I believe that no other industry is in a better position to do something about bullying than the martial arts industry … The mere act of training in martial arts and having children develop a higher level of confidence decreases their chances of being bullied in the first place.” The mom from the previously mentioned bullying situation shared her family’s resolution. “We decided our son needed help with handling himself and building his confidence up. [Tae Kwon Do] gave my son confidence to know that he had the strength within him to stop something first with his words, and — as a last resort — defense. Never to hit first, never to intentionally hurt the person hurting you but to just keep yourself safe. My son is now 10 years old and has his high brown belt in TKD. My son walks tall now. He's not afraid to stand up for himself or others. TKD has taught him that fighting is never the answer. It's only a last resort to protect himself from harm or to protect someone else from harm.” Robyn Morrow, mom of a Tae Kwon Do student, “I was teased and called four eyes as a child and had a hard time feeling connected to people, but that pales in comparison to the stories I've heard happening nowadays. My oldest child is skinny and tall, but holds his head high and walks tall … I think his confidence is in large part due to his years at Taekwondo … He knows he has the power to break boards, so I would guess that gives him more confidence too. I am so glad we made the choice to enroll him in Taekwondo classes before he reached the awkward teenage age he's entering now.” Martial arts comes with other benefits as well. Jody Jones, mom of 3, says, “I think martial arts helps form a great foundation for understanding the benefits of structure, discipline and hard work. Attaining a black belt, or any higher belt rank, is a manifestation of what you can gain through the physical and mental discipline of mental arts. It's an experience that's hard to duplicate for your children, and the concept of working extremely hard to attain your goals is one that you carry into your adult life and work.” Kerrie McLoughlin is the homeschooling mom of 5, author of several ebooks on Amazon.com and blogger at TheKerrieShow.com.

Here are Just Some of the Great Efforts In-Store During Bullying Awareness Month Media Guidelines for Bullying Prevention Media coverage of social issues has a big impact on how communities understand and address problems. Research and expert opinion suggest that certain trends in media coverage of bullying have the potential to do harm. This guidance offers help to journalists, bloggers, the entertainment creative community, and others who are developing content about bullying to engage in responsible reporting on this important topic.

Bullying Prevention Awareness Month: A Time for Learning

This month, groups across the country committed to stop bullying will release new resources, campaigns, and efforts aimed at bringing awareness to this important issue facing our youth. This month serves as a reminder that bullying prevention must be addressed, and one way to accomplish this is through educating ourselves, our communities and the youth in our lives. In the spirit of lifelong learning on this issue, the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention are launching several initiatives and resources this month through StopBullying.gov. These efforts are highly important for reaching out not only to parents, teachers, and the youth themselves, but also to the media who play an important role in telling the stories we hear about bullying. Show your support 10-5-15 | Blue Shirt Day Start the month of October by encour-

aging students to wear blue to stomp out bullying. 10-13-15 | "Let's Make a New Friend" Day Encourage leadership at your school by promoting the "Let's Make a New Friend" campaign. Give your students ideas about how to make a friend with a peer at their school who they do not know. Some ideas include inviting that student to an after school activity or club meeting; asking him/her to sit with them at lunch; or starting a conversation with someone who sits alone on the bus. 10-21-15 | Unity Day Encourage students to wear orange to take a stand against bullying. Take photos and post them to Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook using #UnityDay2015. Also, get the staff involved in the campaign by asking them to wear an orange ribbons during the day.

Help Prevent Cyberbullying with the KnowBullying App by SAMHSA KnowBullying by SAMHSA is a free app that can help parents and caregivers start a conversation with their children about school, work, relationships, life, and bullying. Visit http://store.samhsa.gov/apps/bullying to download the app. Youth Engagement Events Across the country, youth are encouraged to talk about bullying by organizing bullying prevention social and educational events through youth organizations in their communities. Youth can report back on these activities. For more information, visit StopBullying.gov. Bullying Prevention Training Center This section of the website provides a one-stop-shop for training materials for educators and community leaders. Visit the Training Center on StopBullying.gov. Dear Colleague Letter The Department of Education has issued guidance in the form of a Dear Colleague letter that provides an overview of school districts’ responsibilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to address bullying of students with disabilities.

Keep up to date on the latest bullying prevention resources and tools and sign up for e-mail updates from StopBullying.gov. Benefits of Outdoor Play

In Memory of Lana Addison Miller

Lana Addison Miller (age 2) passed away peacefully on September 12, 2015 after a courageous battle with childhood cancer. She was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer, at 4 months old that progressively spread to her pituitary gland, brain and spine. She will be remembered as a strong and joyful spirit, reminding people how truly precious life is. Lana is survived by her parents Mark and Allison Miller.

Fall is officially here and with that comes cooler weather, and you’ve guessed it—Fall Festivals. This means there are several opportunities to do activities outdoors with your children, which also means that you will be helping your child build many foundational life skills they need in order to be successful for years to come. Whoa…that seems a little farfetched, right? Yet, it’s totally not! Research shows that young children learn best through meaningful play experiences. In fact, before age 7, children desperately need a multitude of wholebody sensory experiences daily in order to develop strong bodies and minds. This is best done outside where the senses are fully aroused. If children are not given enough natural movement and play experiences, they actually start out disadvantaged in their academic careers. They are more likely to have difficulty paying attention, trouble controlling emotions, difficulty problem-solving, a lack of social skills and are more likely to be clumsy.

*We will always remember you, Lana, and are thankful for your brief but impactful life on earth.*

Outdoor Activities Ideas: Here are some great outdoor activities to do with children this season: • Fall Festivals. Pumpkin patches, Octoberfests, Corn Mazes…there is lots to do this time of year outside!

To keep Lana’s spirit alive, there are several ways below to honor her. You can be of great service by donating to:

• Go on a nature walk. Encourage children to touch (to discover the smoothness of a rock, the roughness of bark, etc.). Point out the sounds of birds, passing cars, whistling wind, etc. • Create an obstacle course. Use old tires, large appliance boxes, tree stumps, etc. • Dance! Bring music outdoors to practice dancing, jumping and twirling. • Water painting. Grab a brush and a bucket of water and paint on your house, driveway, etc. • Blow and pop bubbles. • Provide a garden. Use a plastic container to put soil, rocks, flowers and sticks in. If you now have an over-abundance of painted pumpkins, know how to do every corn maze in town, and are tired of apple cider, remember that you are helping your child this season develop life skills that will stay with them forever. National Child Health Day Child Health Day is a day to learn and focus on the health of children. It raises awareness of what parents and other adults can do to help improve the health of their children. When is Child Health Day celebrated? The first Monday of October Who celebrates this day? This day is an official observance in the United States. It's not an official holiday, but many schools, hospitals, and government agencies observe the day with special programs. What do people do to celebrate? The focus is on education of child health. Agencies and schools observe the day with special programs. Programs include education on eating healthy and getting plenty of exercise. Activities for Child Health Day • Get some exercise - Be sure to get plenty of exercise on this day and every other day. This can be a fun activity. Find something that is active that you enjoy doing and then make the time to do it every day. • Eat healthy - You should do this every day and this holiday is as good as any other to get started. Teachers and parents can educate students on what to eat and how much to eat. Be sure to eat your fruits and vegetables and don't eat a lot of candy and fatty foods. • Make your doctor's appointments - Parents be sure to make a doctor's appointment for an annual physical. An annual physical can help in preventing kids from getting sick and can be a good time to make sure your children have the proper immunizations. Don't forget the dentist and the eye doctor as well! • Post a list of emergency numbers - Make a list of phone numbers such as the Poison Control Line, the local police and fire department, your doctor, the hospital, local emergency room and any other important numbers for your family. Then post this list somewhere that it will be easy find in case of an emergency. • Medical Bracelets - If your child has dangerous allergies or a medical condition like diabetes, get a medical bracelet that they can wear all the time. This way if something happens, the paramedics and doctors will know the right way to treat your child. History of Child Health Day Child Health Day has been observed in the United States since 1928 under President Calvin Coolidge. Initially the day was observed on May 1st, but was moved to the first Monday in October in 1960. Facts about Child Health Day Around one in six children in the United States is considered overweight. The HRSA, or the Health Resources and Services Administration, offers resources to help parents in maintaining the health of their children. Around 82% of children in the United States are in excellent or very good health (source: CDC). 22 • October 2015

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the "Day of Unity" held in October 1981 and conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the "Day of Unity" held in October 1981 and conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at the local, state, and national level. The activities conducted were as varied and diverse as the program sponsors but had common themes: • Mourning those who have died because of domestic violence. • Celebrating those who have survived. • Connecting those who work to end violence. These three themes remain a key focus of Domestic Violence Awareness Month events today. In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. That same year marks the initiation of the first national domestic violence toll-free hotline. In 1989, the U.S. Congress passed public law designating October of that year as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Each year, the Day of Unity is celebrated the first Monday of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. —Adapted from the 1996 Domestic Violence Awareness Month Resource Manual of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. In 1977 fourteen shelters in Florida formed a network of battered women's advocates known as the Refuge Information Network. Several years later, this same organization was incorporated as the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence (FCADV). FCADV was founded on principles of cooperation and unity among shelters. Today, FCADV serves as the professional association for Florida's 42 domestic vio26 • October 2015

lence centers. The mission of the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence is to work towards ending violence through public awareness, policy development, and support for Florida's domestic violence centers.

Info

FCADV operates Florida's toll-free domestic violence hotline (1-800-5001119); linking callers to the nearest domestic violence center and provides translation assistance when needed. In addition, FCADV maintains a resource library of books, periodicals, and videos regarding domestic violence issues. FCADV has also developed posters, brochures, safety plans, and other resources. Many of these are available in several languages and may be ordered through FCADV. For more information on programs and services and to find your local agency visit www.fcadv.org.

The Best-looking Jack-O'-Lanterns On The Block:

Carve Them With More Fun & Less Fuss

by Christina Katz

1. Pick the prettiest. Large or small, you are looking for sturdy stems, no bruises, and pumpkins that sit pretty. Place the pumpkin on a counter and stoop down to see how it looks at eye level before you buy. Don't carry them home by the stems because they break easily. 2. Timing is everything. The Internet is thick with tips for preserving pumpkins longer. Don't try them. Simply carve your pumpkins 3-5 days before Halloween for a still-standing-tall guarantee. 3. Make cleanup a snap. The secret weapon for easy pumpkin-carving cleanup is probably out in your garage or shed. It's a basic plastic tarp. Spread this time-saving savior inside on a cool day or outside on a warm day to contain your carving enthusiasm. 4. Use the proper tools. The best devices for carving jack O'lanterns don't live in your kitchen drawers. Knives slip and spoons bend, so resist the urge to dip into your cutlery and instead purchase sturdy metal pumpkin scoops and kid-friendly carving saws you can use year after year. 30 • October 2015

5. Bigger is better. Enlarge designs for larger pumpkins. Use your home printer or stop by the local copy shop. 6. Start at the top. For large pumpkins, make the opening big enough for your hand and cut it at a 45-degree angle so the top will nest in place, instead of falling through. 7. Scrape, don't dig. Don't thin the walls of your pumpkin when scooping out the guts, so it will stay sturdy longer. 8. Draw it first. Freehand designs are cute and classic and young children love them. Use a medium-point washable marker to draw your design and then wipe away any remaining marks after carving. 9. Slit the paper. If you prefer to transfer a design and the pattern won't wrap flat around your pumpkin, encourage it to cling by cutting a few up-and-down slits on the paper with an Xacto-knife prior to carving.*

10. Poke hole-patterns. If you've always wanted to attempt a tricky pattern, attach the design to your pumpkin with blue painter's tape and poke shallow holes along the lines, just through the pumpkin's skin with a thumbtack, skinny nail or hat pin. Then connect the dots with your carving saw to achieve whatever fancy look you like.* 11. Get your hand in there. Push carved pieces out from the inside with a finger. Go over delicate edges with a filet knife if pieces are stuck to avoid tearing pumpkin skin.* 12. Discard pulp outdoors. Do not put pulp into your garbage disposal. The place for pumpkin guts is your compost or yard clippings pile. Remove seeds for roasting and gently shake pulp off your plastic tarp before hosing it off and hanging it out to dry. 13. Keep jacks cool. In warm weather, keep carved pumpkins cool during the day. For longer-lasting displays, avoid direct sunlight. Display them at night and with battery-powered candles to avoid interior damage and fire hazards. * Techniques for parents only, not young children.

Beyond The Goofy Grin: 10 Playful Pumpkin Designs

A traditional jack-o'-lantern design is great. But why not branch out over the years? Here are few dramatic, yet easy designs for older kids and adults to try. 1. Holier than thou. Use a power drill to make holes all over the sides and top. 2. Wordy gourd. Try "Boo!" or "Eek!" to get started. 3. Fairy house village. Transform pumpkins of various sizes into a resort for magical creatures. 4. Cookie-cutter face. Gently hammer metal cutters into your pumpkin with a rubber mallet. 5. Diorama window. Cut a larger-than-usual opening to reveal a scene inside. 6. Core curriculum. Use an apple corer to cut wider, spaced-out holes. 7. Location identification. Put your house number pumpkin by the front door or mailbox. 8. Tower of grins. Stack squatty, multi-colored jacks on top of each other for a wow effect. 9. The monogrammed look. Carve one initial or up to three for a stately look. 10. Mum's the pumpkin. Carve an opening on top for a pot of mums or flower bouquet.

How To Roast Perfect Pumpkin Seeds As everyone is carving, offer a large bowl or pot for the pumpkin pulp. When the bowl is half full, loosen the seeds with your hands and fill pot to the three-quarters mark with water. The seeds will rise to the top. Squeeze them through your fingers to remove any clinging pulp as you transfer them to a colander. Then spread them on paper towels and pat dry. Set your oven for 325 degrees and transfer seeds to cookie sheets in single layers. Sprinkle each pan of seeds with one or two teaspoons of olive oil and a few generous shakes of salt. Turn seeds with spatula every eight minutes until crispy on the outside and golden on the inside. Do not let seeds turn brown. Remove from oven, cool, and enjoy. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two months. If you have more seeds than you will eat, make pumpkin seed brittle or pumpkin seed trail mix to bring to Halloween parties as hostess gifts. October 2015 • 31

Halloween Play Dough

Imaginative and Sensory Play Make Halloween play dough for lots of sensory and imaginative play this Halloween. This fun and colorful Halloween play dough is quick and easy to make and can be used for hours of imaginative creative fun with dough jacko-lanterns, spiders and cauldrons. Make a batch of orange, black, and green play dough Set it out on a table with Halloween cookie cutters and wooden dowel pieces for rolling and let kids play away. Homemade Play Dough Make individual batches for each color and let the kids get creative! Mix together the following ingredients in a pan over medium heat: 1 cup of plain flour 1 cup of water 1/4 cup table salt 1 tablespoon of cooking oil 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar Food coloring (you will need between 6 – 8 drops to achieve good intensity of color) Mixture will become smooth and runny at first, but, within a couple of minutes, the mixture will form a ball and stick to itself, and then it’s done! Simply transfer it to your counter top to cool. Once it has cooled down, knead the mixture to make it lovely and pliable and that’s it! Beautiful smooth homemade play dough! For Black Play Dough Mix together the following ingredients in a pan over medium heat: 1 cup flour 2/3 cup water 1/3 cup black liquid watercolor 1/2 cup salt 1 tablespoon cream of tartar 1 tablespoon vegetable oil Once the dough forms a ball, pour it onto a piece of wax paper or other safe surface. When it’s cool enough, knead the dough until smooth. Optional: Knead black glitter into your dough!

Fun and Not so Scary Halloween Caramel Apples Caramel apples are so easy to make… and they totally look difficult. You’ll look really clever and crafty when it’s all said and done. It only takes three ingredients and three minutes “cooking” time to make them. Here’s a quick and easy recipe. Ingredients: 4 apples 2 tablespoons of evaporated milk 50 unwrapped Werther’s chewy caramels. They’re the best. Popsicle sticks Directions: Melt the caramels and milk in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave on high for 2 or 3 minutes, stirring frequently until smooth. Put sticks in the tops of apples. Dip the apples into the caramel mixture. Then let the kids get creative with sprinkles, gauze, pipe cleaners, and premade crafts to apply before the caramel sets! 32 • October 2015

Halloween Costumes You Can Throw Together in No Time at All

by Rachel Moshman

Throwing together Halloween costumes is easy and fun. Creating homemade costumes for little ones is a great way to build memories. You’ll save money and your child will look adorable! Here are some easy costumes I’ve thrown together. Bag of Jelly Beans Dress your child in white leggings and a white long-sleeved t-shirt. Attach inflated balloons in a rainbow of colors all over clothing with super sticky double sided tape. Finally, cut head and arm holes out of a large clear garbage bag to put over the balloons. Ghost We tried the old-fashioned blanket over the head trick, but my little girl couldn’t see, despite having eye holes cut into the fabric. Plus, it kept falling down, causing her to trip. So I cut out a hole for her head in an old white sheet and stuck it over her poncho style. I used baby powder to make her face and hair pale. I gave her some plastic chains to drag around. She loved moaning and rattling her chains. Jellyfish This one is super easy, yet I saw it win a community costume contest. Dress your 36 • October 2015 / www.flaglerparent.com

child in solid colored leggings with a matching t-shirt (any color will work). Then attach long pieces of birthday party paper streamers to the bottom of the shirt with double sided tape. Octopus Babies make the most adorable little sea creatures! Go with a onesie paired with tights or leggings. Pick up some brightly colored knee socks or tights at the dollar store. If using tights, cut off the legs. Stuff the legs of the tights or the knee socks rags and use fabric glue to attach them to the onesie. (Or sew them if you know how - I don't!) You should have six legs made in this way. Combined with your child's own legs, there will be eight octopus legs. Bottle of Ketchup Dress your child in red pants, shirt, socks and shoes. Glue pieces of cardboard painted red into a triangle to resemble the top of a squeeze bottle. Attach the headpiece to

a headband. My sister did the same for my niece only in yellow, so she could be a bottle of mustard. They were an adorable pair! Punk Rocker My daughter loves getting to pile on my makeup! This is a fun costume to put together that let's your child's natural style shine. Allow them to come up with their craziest outfit - stripes with polka dots, neon colors, whatever. My daughter rocked polka dot tights, an orange tutu, a glittery shirt and a plaid jacket. We teased her hair, layered on costume jewelry and gave her a toy microphone as a prop. Boys are also adorable in any of these costumes. Just switch the leggings and tights for sweatpants, and headbands for hats. Substitute t-shirts for onesies for older kids. None of these costumes will take over an hour to make and almost every part of them is stuff you probably already have on hand. Once my daughter started school, she began yearning for the store bought outfits. I miss being able to get away with cheap and easy homemade costumes!

CHARACTER COUNTS WEEK!

Celebrate October 18th - 24th! Every year, the U.S. President, U.S. Senate, state governors, and officials around the world proclaim the third week in October CHARACTER COUNTS! week. And every year millions of kids in dozens of countries participate. No matter what your political or religious affiliation, this event is about the universal values we share. When properly implemented, CHARACTER COUNTS! is an immersive program connecting staff and students through a shared language and framework of values called The Six Pillars of Character. It fosters a positive environment that has been shown to improve overall attendance and test scores while reducing negative incidents such as bullying and discipline referrals. CHARACTER COUNTS! is a framework, not a scope and sequence program nor a curriculum. It provides practical strategies and tools to braid Character Counts! strategies with other programs such as PBIS to foster positive climate change to produce exceptional results in the academic, social, emotional and character development domains by infusing six core ethical and performance values and traits into the DNA of your organization. Awareness and Fostering Materials Consistency in what students see, feel, and hear, fosters the learning experience and climate. Schools and teachers that approach the CHARACTER COUNTS! program by merely purchasing Six Pillar materials or downloading our free lesson plans rarely realize the true potential of what makes our program successful. CHARACTER COUNTS! is most effective when it becomes part of the DNA and culture of your school. This level of commitment requires a behavioral mindset shift by staff and students to infuse The Six Pillars of Character into their own values and the classroom. For more information on CHARACTER COUNTS! visit www.charactercounts.org. Here you can gain insight on the programs and resources offered and start implementing them in your school and community. www.flaglerparent.com / October 2015 • 43
