Mom, and Brady Charlene Michaux Publisher/Editor charlie@bradymediainc.com Family holiday traditions spice childhood with magical joy and anticipation. Like me, you likely cherish wonderful memories of your own family’s annual rituals, a powerful and welcome way of creating strong family bonds. Extra creativity comes into play when partners find ways to combine and blend favorite childhood customs as a springboard for starting new ones. Whatever your tradition, old or new, we understand from experience how important those traditions can be in the eyes of our children. As a child, reaching the month of December was very exciting; it was the end of another year and the best holiday of all: Christmas. It was a month filled with anticipation and expectations. Hoping the items I put on my Christmas wish list would come true. It was so much fun to shop for gifts and share in the joy of the season with those I love. School plays, church gathering, holiday recitals, and lots of outdoor fun. With the chaotic days of December we’ve brought you some great content in this month’s issue. With great reads like Healthy Wealthy & Wise, Use Music to Stay in Harmony this Holiday Season, Making Holiday Magic, and Christmas Tree Safety are articles to help you get through this busy time of year. We hope we have saved you some time by bringing you a list of the ‘Hottest Toys’ for this holiday season. To this day, Christmas is still one of my favorite holidays for many reasons. Our staff wishes all of you a wonderful and magical holiday. A special thank you to all of our advertisers and to you, our loyal readers. It is has been our pleasure to be of service to you for six years. Wishing you and your family a healthy and happy season of refreshingly fun traditions, and fresh beginnings as we start the New Year!

FUTURES Foundation Announces Superintendent’s Creative Mini-Grant Award Recipient Superintendent Tom Russell with award winner Semoia Reid

FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools named this year’s recipient of the Superintendent’s Mini-Grant Creativity Award at a recent celebration in the ICI Center at EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University. Superintendent Tom Russell presented Semoia Reid from Edgewater Public Elementary School with the annual Superintendent’s Mini-Grant Award for her project “STEM-Mulating Minds Through Music!” This project is designed to demonstrate the interdisciplinary aspects of music, particularly STEM principles, by teaching elements of acoustics and reinforcing mathematics principles in the music classroom. Students will engineer and build a variety of PVC pipe instruments, which will then be played in the music classroom by students from all grade levels. Students will learn the science of how musical sounds are produced and will use mathematics principles to create their own fully-functional pitched instruments. In addition to being honored at the event, FUTURES Foundation presented Ms. Reid $250 in recognition for her creativity in addition to fully funding her $920 grant request. This year’s MiniGrant sponsors included Amscot Financial, Duke Energy, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Florida Power & Light, Heart of Volusia Inc., Miss Noopur Ranganathan, and Wells Fargo. Sodexo Catering assisted with sponsorship of the reception. Seven additional teachers were recognized for their creative mini-grants: Penelope Aguilar, Kimberly Sigler, Ashley Lekan & Gerry Stark, “The Haunted Laboratory,” Holly Hill School; Peggy Bank, “DeLand Bulldogs Kids Helping Kids,” DeLand High School; Tara Butler, “Mainland’s EcoSociety Powered by the Sun,” Mainland High School; Paul McLaughlin, “Mallet Math,” Deltona Lakes Elementary School; Trish Robertson, “STEM: Discovering Energy and Nutrients Needed for Hydroponics,” Deltona Middle School; Jennifer Samar, “Sewing in Love for Reading & Math,” Holly Hill School; and Lashawnia Sheppard, “You Teach, I Teach, We All Learn Together,” Taylor MiddleHigh School. Last year FUTURES Foundation launched a new online teacher mini-grant portal, Find it & Fund it, Volusia! to help local teachers obtain the resources they need. Find it & Fund it, Volusia! was created to provide teachers with a way to “crowd source” funding for their ideas and provide students with opportunities they would not have otherwise. Through this platform, teachers can request funding for a variety of projects and donors can fund them, either fully or partially, with 100% of contributions going directly to the posted project. Teachers can also promote their projects through their own social media networks. As a 501(c)(3), donations to FUTURES Foundation for these teacher Mini Grant requests may be tax deductible; please consult your tax advisor. Through the www.finditfunditflorida.com/volusia portal, FUTURES Foundation and its sponsors funded almost $62,000 to 100 Volusia County Teacher Mini-Grant requests during the October Mini-Grant reception hosted by FUTURES. The public is encouraged to visit the website to view these creative, innovative grants and assist local teachers in finalizing funding for their projects.

FUTURES’ vision is “All Volusia County Public School Students are equipped and prepared for college or career success” and its mission statement is “We engage business and civic leaders to promote and achieve educational excellence for Volusia County Public Schools.” For more information about FUTURES, please call Executive Director Cynthia Perrick Ramirez at 386-255-6475, ext. 50730, or email: caperric@volusia.k12.fl.us. FUTURES Foundation supports educational quality for the Volusia County Public School System by directing resources toward areas of identified need, increasing community involvement and support, and encouraging open communication between the community and our schools. It is a nonprofit, direct support organization founded in 1985 to support Volusia County Public Schools. The organization’s volunteer board of directors consists of business and community leaders who raise funds to produce student and staff programs, for which tax funding is not available, in the public schools. Through donations and events, it offers these Take Stock in Children scholarships. For additional information about FUTURES contact: Executive Director Cynthia Perrick Ramirez 386.255.6475, ext. 50730 email: caperric@volusia.k12.fl.us Administrative Assistant Missy Ballard 386.255.6475, ext. 50728 email: djballar@volusia.k12.fl.us.
