Middle row: Ryan Monahan, Braydyn Brynteson, Myca Reynolds, Colton Anderson, Keaton Dingman, James Brennan, Tim Ryan, Nate Traut, Jacob Faacks, Zach Jorgens, Dylan Mesenbrink, Marcus Klein, Tyler Manley, Josh Pettit, Tyler Larson, Brendan Brill, Luke Ryan and manager Tade Magnuson. Back row: Harley Large, Dylin Ackerman, Zach Sjoblad, Sam Scheuss, Zach Senst, Garett Wolf, Cale Wolf, Maxx Schindel, Blake Lane, John Marchwick, Kade Kitzman, Chase Larson, Deven Psyck, Calvin Maske, Jake Ryan, Thomas Brewer, Austin Young, John Urseth and Brian Rowland.

Patriots have admirable core of senior starters returning By Pete Mohs Publisher The Pequot Lakes football team would like to reach the Section 8-3A final for the fifth straight year, but with a different result after the Patriots have lost four straight section title games against Dilworth-GlyndonFelton. And Pequot Lakes should be section contenders behind a solid group of almost 20 seniors coming off last year’s 31-20 loss to the Rebels in the final.

“We have a lot of returning starters and a strong senior class,” said Chip Lohmiller, who begins his 14th season with a 92-69 overall coaching record. “With that mature group, we look to compete for a section championship.” The Patriots finished 4-3 in the Midwest Red Section 8-3A conference and 7-4 overall last season. Among the seniors who contributed last year are running backs, Nathan Traut with 85 carries for 500 yards and eight touchdowns and Blake Lane, who had 114 carries for 498 yards three TDs. Top senior receiver was Austin Young, who had a team-high 43 catches for 973 yards and 11 touchd o w n s . This season Lane is at quarter-

back, with the graduation of Max Tangen. Other seniors are tight end Maxx Schindel; running back Devon Psyck; fullback Calvin Maske; receiver Zach Sjoblad; and linemen Sam Scheuss, John Urseth and Zach Senst. Those lineman were a key reason that Pequot Lakes combined for 1931 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns — including 320 yards and seven touchdowns by Psyck and 301 yards and three scores by Maske. The Patriots also combined for 1,524 yards passing — including 228 by Sjoblad, 133 by Schindel and 112 by Traut. On defense, Pequot Lakes should be solid with seven of the top nine tacklers returning, including Schindel, who recorded a teamhigh 58 solo tackles and 57 assists. Other top tacklers were senior Garrett Wolf, 45 solo and 39 assists; Maske, 45 and 40; Lane, 34 and 30; senior John Marchwick 32 and 21; Young, 27 and 15; and Sjoblad, 24 and 13. Wolf

also recovered three fumbles while Young had two pass interceptions. Other players on the Patriots roster are seniors Luke Schmokel, Chase Larson, Jake Ryan, Kade Kitzman, Collin Stattelman, Thomas Brewer and Allen Fremstad. Juniors are Tyler Larson, Dylin Ackerman, James Brennan, Marcus Klein, Colton Anderson, Luke and Tim Ryan, Harley Large, Jaydn Benzick, Dylan Messenbrink, Brendan Brill and Craig Van Dyke. Sophomores are Zach Jorgens, Cale Wolf, Jacob Faacks and Carter Embree. With 22 seniors on the roster, D-G-F should again be one of the contenders in the section. Pequot Lakes will be on the road to face the Rebels on Friday, Sept. 22. Bill Magnuson, Pete Ryan and Tom Smith are assistant coaches for the Patriots, who open the season by hosting Staples-Motley on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Tigers will need to stay healthy in 2017 By Pete Mohs Publisher The Pine River-Backus Tigers football team will need to stay healthy this season with just 16 players on their roster when they open the season on Friday, Sept. 1, at Fosston. “We have 16 kids from grades 9-12, so we’re struggling with numbers,” said PR-B coach Tom Demars. “Even with low numbers, we have a chance to pick up some wins if we can keep everyone healthy and ready to play each week.” The Tigers will have many new starters, including Brandon Wolske, who will be quarterback after playing mostly at running back last year. “We have good numbers and good athletes at the junior high level,” said Demars, who added this year’s roster size of 16 players in the

smallest in more than 25 years that he’s been with the program, “but the option of bringing those players up to varsity is rare because of the big difference in size between junior high and high school players.” Last season, the Tigers lost to Browerville in the Section 6A playoffs. “We have some new teams in our section this year,” Demars said. “Browerville and (section runner-up) Parkers Prairie have moved up. But a couple teams moved to our section and they should be favorites like Ottertail Central, which had been a traditionally good team in Class 2A, and Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, which had been at nineman state in recent years.” Returning letterwinners include: seniors Cody France, offensive lineman/linebacker; Don Owen, running back/linebacker; and Brandon Wolske, quarterback/linebacker.

Others who could contribute are seniors Mike Ford, receiver/cornerback; Austin Rateike, running back/cornerback; Norman Toetu, running back/defensive line; Shaun Jacobsen, offensive/defensive line; and Nick Hagerty, offensive/defensive lineman; junior Logan Gordon, receiver/defensive back; sophomores Evan Koering, receiver/ defensive back; Jake Poehler, tight end/linebacker; Cody Linn, receiver/linebacker; George Davidson, offensive lineman/linebacker; Tyler Degrote, offensive/defensive line; and Trevor Birr, offensive/defensive line; and freshman Logan Carlson, offensive/defensive line. Assistant coaches for the Tigers, who finished 6-3 overall last season, are Rob Johnson, Terry Holden, Michael Dinnel, Travis Hoffarth and Mike Lupella.

New coach optimistic for Patriot volleyball By Dan Determan Staff Writer Chris Ganley takes over as head coach of the Pequot Lakes Patriot volleyball team after five seasons on the coaching staff, and is so far pleased with her team’s dedication. “The girls have done some great work in the offseason to prepare for this year,” Ganley said. “I have been impressed by those girls who attended the strength and conditioning class this summer. It has increased their explosiveness and overall power. Many of the girls also attended a team camp, and we have several players that have attended more than one volleyball camp this summer.” Ganley takes over as head coach for the retiring Kate Dale. Prior to joining the Patriots, she served as a head coach in Sauk Centre and Pillager. The Patriots finished the season with a subsection finals loss to No. 1-ranked Wadena-Deer Creek in a 3-0 effort. The team has five letterwinners returning for the 2017 season: sophomore Mariah Rickard, junior Britt Kratochvil and seniors Clare Ganley, Sannah Lohmiller and Karli

son in preparation for this fall, which we are greatly looking forward to,” said PR-B coach Josh Hirschey. “We have a great group of student athletes to work with, who have a special gift to work hard, but yet make

everything fun. We hope to get healthy and have a good start to the season (that opened Aug. 29 at Pillager).” Other players who could contribute include: Claire Dahl, Hailey Dowling, Katherine Han-

neken, Jamie Johnson, Ariana Kramp and Rylee Norman. Assistant coaches for the Tigers, who will be competing in Section 5A, are Nicole Hirschey, Lisa Toft, Leah Freeman and Naomi Horn.

Non-letterwinners are sophomores Max Johnston, Brooks Anderson and Ethan Johnson; freshman Trevor Slaybaugh; and eighth-graders Connor Habermann and Jesse Clausen.

The Patriots are scheduled to open on Thursday, Aug. 31, at the St. Olaf College Invitational in Northfield. tain Erin Bengtson. They do, however, have six returning first-time letterwinners in Morgan Mudgett, Alexa Fyle, Madeline Pluimer, Courtney Boller, Madeline Sherman and Elli Saxerud. Additionally, Sergent anticipates some contribution from juniors Payton Schlosser and Brionna Haag as well as sophomores Whitney Fink, Sophie Littman, Lachlan Larson, Hailey Halverson, Made-

line Lundgren and Grace Bonfig. She also expects freshmen Morgan Lueck and Afton Crocker to make an impact. “We will know a lot more after we have had some competition against a few other teams,” Sergent said. “It’s hard to tell when they are just playing teammates because I have seen them compete against each other throughout the years. I feel like a lot of them are evenly matched with each other, so I need to see them against some new opponents. “I’ve been around them since they were little with coaching in the summer and things like that. They have great chemistry and they all get along with each other. And they support each other. When you have good chemistry, it is a lot of fun … We’re optimistic. They played a lot this summer and they knew they would have to prepare for some challenges.” Chad Rudbeck is in his second year as junior varsity coach and varsity assistant coach. Brenda Helmrichs and Deanne Trottier coach at the middle level. “We are looking forward to the challenges that we face and think it will be interesting to see how it all unfolds,” Sergent said. “It should be a lot of fun.”

By Dan Determan Staff Writer After a senior-heavy season last fall, the Pequot Lakes Patriot tennis team will look to some different faces to carry the team in 2016. The Patriots finished the 2016 season with an overall record of 15-7 and a Mid-State Conference record of 5-1. However, the team lost its top three singles players — Alyssa Golden, Alex Stone and Mallory Goerges — to graduation, and have just one senior playing this season in co-captain and three-year letterwinner Alexis Lueck. Several athletes will make a significant jump in terms of competition, and some of last season’s doubles players will move to singles competition. Despite this, head coach Monica Sergent — in her 14th year as coach — is optimistic in her team’s abilities. “Our lineup will have a fresh look again this year,” Sergent said. “Alexis Lueck is making a big jump from No. 4 singles to No. 1. Everyone else is either new to varsity or is also playing up several positions, but the girls have been working hard in the offseason preparing for this.” The only other returning multitime letterwinner is junior co-cap-
