Strand excited to be parade grand marshal By Theresa Bourke Staff Writer
Ted Strand’s dedication to the Crosslake community has earned him the title of grand marshal for the city’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 18. “I don’t think I’m worthy,” said Strand, the city’s public works director. “But I’m quite excited about it.” The honor fits, as Strand has helped make the parade happen for the 17 years he’s lived in Crosslake. “Ted Strand … has been just so valuable to us for the parade,” said Cindy Myogeto, Crosslake Chamber of Commerce director. “He works his tail off to get the snow cleaned off and to get the streets cleaned and to get the city looking better.” Since he’s usually in the background for the event, Strand is looking forward to a different role this year. “I haven’t got to see the parade. I’m always standing on the sidelines helping direct traffic,” he said. “So this is going to be kind of neat for me to sit in the center of it and get to go through it and see all the people.” After a childhood of moving all over the country with his dad’s government job and attending 13 different schools in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska and Washington, Strand and his wife, Marie, finally settled in Crosslake 17 years ago to raise their three children, as was their plan all
along. “Our goal when we got married - my wife and I - was always to move to the Brainerd lakes area,” he said. “And here we are, and we enjoy it.” Crosslake is the third city - after Buffalo and Wadena - where Strand has served as part of the public works department. “I’ve moved up from a laborer to an operator to foreman to public works director,” he said. Though Strand said he has always been handy with equipment and tools related to his current job, the desire to work in said field didn’t come immediately after high school. “As all young men, I wasn’t ready for college,” Strand joked. “I worked for a few years; I did several different things, but Christmastime in 1984, I was in Louisiana, sitting in a motel, and I said, ‘I’ve got to go back to school.’” An environmental sciences degree awaited Strand at St. Cloud Technical College, and then began his now 30-year career in the public works field. And the job’s challenging nature is what keeps him going. “It’s a challenge every day. There’s something new,” Strand said. “Like you get the July storm. We spent all summer cleaning we’re still cleaning up from that.” That added unpredictability, paired with the many tasks assigned to the public works department, means Strand is on call 24/7. STRAND, From Page K2 “How I always say it is, ‘We’re a jack of all trades and a master of none,’” Strand said. “You’ve got to be kind of an expert in a little bit of everything.” Those trades include snow removal, lawn mowing, public building maintenance, sidewalk upkeep and heading the wastewater treatment plant. But for Strand, it’s the people he encounters that make the job worth it. “I love working for our community,” he said. “The staff is outstanding here, whether it be the administration or police department or parks. We all interact and work together.” Strand credits the city council with empowering and allowing him to do his best to serve the community. His work hasn’t gone unnoticed, as Myogeto said Strand is always willing to help out with chamber events.
“Beyond just the parade, he does the same thing for WinterFest; he does the same thing for the Fourth of July,” she said. “He just takes great pride in the community, so he just rose to the top of the list (for grand marshal) this year.” The vote for Strand as grand marshal this year, Myogeto said, was unanimous. Though the public works director is eligible for retirement from the city this coming fall, community members don’t have to worry about losing his helping hands just yet. “I’m too young,” Strand said with a laugh. “It’s just nice to know that you have that (retirement) ability if you want to, but it’s not going to happen here for a few years.”
