Turtles, Racing, Prizes‌ Nisswa Turtle Races
Excitement fills the air in downtown Nisswa every Wednesday afternoon as the Nisswa Turtle Races gear up. You can get your commemorative Turtle Race button when registration begins at 1pm with official race time at 2pm. Turtle Races run from June 5th through August 21st, no matter the weather. 2019 marks the 56th year of the Nisswa Turtle Races. The races draw hundreds of turtle racers from all over the country. They come to celebrate the tradition of the Nisswa Turtle Races and more importantly, they come to race turtles at the Turtle Track. The track is located at the Welcome Center parking lot, along the Paul Bunyan State Trail in downtown Nisswa. It only costs $5 to race a turtle! For $5, racers get the collectible Turtle Race button, which is a new design every year, and they get to race in lots of races. Starting with the heat races, 15 to 20 racers at a time cheer as their chosen turtles race for the finish line. The winner of each heat race gets prizes, a 12
2019 Nisswa Destination Guide
winner’s ribbon AND they get to race again for a chance to be the Grand Champion of the day! Not only does the Grand Champ win additional prizes, he or she gets the coveted Turtle Race medal. Once the Grand Champion earns his or her winner’s medal, the specialty races begin. As part of the Turtle Race registration and with your Turtle Race button, these races include the Resort Race and 4 other specialty races you may quality for: the Tiny Tots Race (5 years of age and under), Out of State/ Out of Country Race, Grandparents Race and the highly competitive Locals Race. The Locals Race is so highly competitive because these local racers have been racing turtles their whole lives and are sure they know how to choose a turtle that is faster than any of the others. The specialty race winners receive ribbons and prizes, too. The Nisswa Turtle Races have become a tradition for many families who visit each year. Kids of all ages race
turtles, from babies to great grandpas, even the turtle race wranglers and volunteers get a chance to race at the end of the specialty races. The turtles are cared for and provided by the Turtle Wranglers who are part of the non-profit Mounted Eagles Therapeutic Horsemanship Program. The turtle wranglers help wrangle the turtles during the Nisswa Turtle Race season and then once the season ends, they release the turtles back into their native habitat.

Celebrate Freedom Days in Nisswa
There is no better place to be over the 4th of July week than in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Parades, music, fireworks and thousands of visitors come to the Nisswa and Brainerd Lakes Area. The weather is excellent in July; the sun is hot, the lake water is perfect and there are so many entertaining things to do. Nisswa hosts Freedom Days on July 3rd every year. Activities throughout the day include Turtle Races, Water Wars, live music and a rotating list of other fun activities. The BIG event of the day is the Freedom Days parade which starts at 7 pm. Spectators line both sides of Main Street to watch the parade with lots of floats, veterans groups, a high school marching band, clowns, local royalty, fire trucks, etc. It’s one of the best parades in the Brainerd Lakes Area. The Nisswa Freedom Days Parade is a favorite among the spectators because not only is it at night when the www.nisswa.com
hot July summer sun isn’t as scorching but there’s tons of candy for the kids. The parade lasts about an hour and is less than 1 mile in length which makes the parade participants love it, too. An estimated 8-12,000 people come to Nisswa on July 3rd to enjoy the festivities. Families line up early with their blankets and lawn chairs to find their perfect spot to view the parade. If it’s fireworks you’re looking for, you won’t be disappointed. You’ll find lots of options during the week of the 4th in the Lakes Area. In Nisswa, fireworks are typically held on July 2nd with our partner, Grand View Lodge, at their Party at the Pines. In addition, the 4th of July holiday in the Brainerd Lakes Area is packed with many other activities and festivities. As noted, on July 2nd, there is music and fireworks at Grand View Lodge in Nisswa and on July 3rd, Nisswa celebrates Freedom Days. Cap the night off on July 3rd with fireworks
in Pequot Lakes and enjoy their parade on July 4th. Brainerd has a parade on the 4th followed by a fireworks show later that evening. That’s not all, there’s even more – most of the big resorts shoot off fireworks, plus there are independent fireworks shows around many of the area lakes and even more shows hosted by local communities. With so much to do here, the Brainerd Lakes Area is the place to celebrate your 4th of July week.

Nisswa City of Lights Festival
2019 marks the 38th year of Nisswa’s City of Lights Festival. While most people are focused on Black Friday “deals” and getting bargains on the busiest national shopping day of the year, downtown Nisswa is focused on creating a beautiful winter festival. It’s like stepping into a Hallmark movie scene or a Norman Rockwell painting. Downtown Nisswa is the best place to spend the day after Thanksgiving. Thousands of Christmas lights are put up throughout downtown. Store windows are decorated for the season and lights are strung in all the trees and the feel of Christmas is in the air. Once the prep work is done, and the day arrives, it is absolutely magical. The event begins in mid-afternoon with horse-drawn wagon rides and letter writing to Santa. Step into the caboose for a Polar Express story reading or join in as Christmas carolers from local churches and schools roam the streets singing. Pet the live reindeer and get www.nisswa.com
your picture taken sitting in a sleigh. The Nisswa Area Historical Society’s Pioneer Village is aglow with hundreds of luminaries lighting the walk way. It is the backdrop for several activities including a Live Nativity Scene, free cider and donuts and the Love Lights a Tree program. The Love Lights a Tree ceremony is a beautiful tradition where people can purchase a tree light as a visual tribute to remember, acknowledge and celebrate the lives of loved ones. Each purchase comes with a personalized tree ornament to take home. By 5:30pm, all the Christmas lights are on throughout town for a truly magnificent sight. AND “HO-HO-HO!” Santa arrives! Everyone loves Santa so he makes a special visit to Nisswa just for the City of Lights. Fireworks are the finale of this family focused event and are launched from the Nisswa City Park. The
park is the perfect location to shoot off a fireworks show. It centers the display directly over the ball field and the Turtle Track area of downtown. There’s not a bad spot in town to view the fireworks. Whether you’ve experienced them once, twice or not at all, cold weather fireworks are a must see, especially against a new blanket of fluffy, white snow. Don’t miss the Nisswa City of Lights Festival – it’s always held the Friday after Thanksgiving.

EVENTS 2019
Noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019
In the early 1990’s the Brainerd Jaycees had a desire to develop a signature project – a project that would rally members, raise money for local charities and provide avenues for individual growth, personal development and leadership. With the first contest being held in January 1991, it is certain the founders never expected this event would become the world’s largest ice fishing contest putting the Brainerd Lakes Area and Gull Lake on the map. This winter event generates over $1 million in revenue for area businesses and over $150,000 for area charities annually. There are 150 spots on the prize board and the prizes are distributed throughout the list with fish being judged by weight only, not by species or length of the fish. The 29th annual Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Contest starts at noon but anglers arrive much earlier to claim their pre-drilled hole in the ice.

Winter is not for the faint at heart – it’s cold, very cold, but having snow on the ground and in the air makes up for it. From skiing to snow shoeing, tubing to snowmobiling, ice hockey to ice fishing, winter has a ton to offer. So bundle up, embrace the season and enjoy what the Lakes Area has to offer. Nisswa’s most beloved event, though technically in the fall, is a winter wonderland presented each year on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. The Nisswa City of Lights Festival transforms Nisswa into a Norman Rockwell painting with Christmas lights everywhere. The grand finale of the evening is a fireworks display like no other. There is nothing like fireworks against the cold, crisp winter sky and snow just makes it that much better.

The Brainerd Lakes Area is booming as a wedding destination, and no one knows that more than three busy friends in the Nisswa area who each caters to brides and grooms in her own way. Dyana Rasinski, co-owner of Petals & Beans in Nisswa, provides the floral designs. Dani Sutin, owner of Sweet Life Bakery in Pequot Lakes, bakes the cakes. Chelsie Krafka, owner of Chelsie Elizabeth Photography in Pequot Lakes, captures all the memories on camera. The three women have an easy rapport as they have become friends through working together on weddings of all sizes, from big to small. “It’s really fun to do the big stuff, but then it’s also fun doing the small, intimate ones too,” said Rasinski, noting the “petals” part of her business has really taken off in the past 13 years. “I’m already booking a year-plus ahead to talk floral needs with brides.” The three women want to debunk the myth that brides and grooms have to bring florists, bakers and photographers from home when tying the knot in the www.nisswa.com
Lakes Area. Talent abounds here, as does trust in the wedding vendors. “We appreciate them hiring local businesses, hiring us up here,” Krafka said. “The talent is here. I know all these resorts like the back of my hand. I know the (wedding) coordinators, where to shoot, the time of day for the best light.” Similarly, Sutin designs cakes specific to each wedding, from the style to the flower accents to the made-fromscratch bakery items using the best ingredients possible. She wants people to be happy from the first bite. Rasinski praises the Lakes Area wedding vendor community. “We literally see each other almost every single weekend,” she said. “We all complement each other so well. We’ve all worked together so many times.” Photographer Krafka added: “I can’t shoot pretty things unless I’m given those pretty things to shoot. When I see a dessert with flowers, I’m excited because I know I get to capture it.” The three friends share each other’s photos posted on social media that show off each woman’s creative

contributions. “My business wouldn’t grow without Dani promoting me and putting my flowers on her cake,” Rasinski said. “My business wouldn’t grow without having other wedding vendors like Chelsie and Dani promoting me and having faith in my work.” “They look to us for trust,” Sutin said, and Rasinski and Krafka agreed. “You have to trust us, whether it’s the baker, whether it’s the florist, whether it’s the photographer or the venue for one of the most important days of your life,” Rasinski agreed, adding they all love to share their expertise with others. “Dani’s the first baker I promote,” she said. “I’m not going to refer somebody who I don’t trust. I know how she works. I know she’s going to be great. I can’t wait to see my flowers on her cake. There’s value to having a florist who cares, a baker who uses good ingredients, a good photographer. It’s so good to have people you trust.” Rasinski does handcrafted, fresh floral designs for bridal bouquets, table settings, centerpieces and hanging installations. She provides fresh florals
for Sutin to dress up wedding cakes. “We work with all budgets and styles and love seeing them come to life when Chelsie and other talented wedding photographers capture their big day. It can be a lot of fun to see where their vision is taking them,” Rasinski said. She did floral work for more than 60 weddings in 2018. Krafka shot her first wedding 15 years ago. One wedding led to two, etc., and in 2018 she photographed more than 20 weddings. She’ll go wherever she is needed, but she mostly does weddings in the Lakes Area for people from the Twin Cities and Fargo, North Dakota, areas. Resorts, cabins, lakes and trees combine to draw people to have their nuptials here. Sutin, a self-described free spirit who hails from Chile, started her career as a cook at area resorts and moved to baking out of necessity. The hours were more conducive to a mom with two young children, and the career allows her hours to be flexible. She started making personalized birthday cakes at homes, and like Krafka, one cake led to two, three, etc. She then made a

wedding cake for a co-worker’s friend, and that evolved in the same way until she made 20 wedding cakes out of her home. “Then it just got too busy so my husband kicked me out of the house,” she said with a laugh, noting there was always frosting on the counter and cookies in the oven. She rented 700 square feet of space in 2017 in Pequot Lakes to bake, and in October 2018 moved to a spot offering 9,000 square feet of space. Sweet Life Bakery provided cakes for more than 60 weddings in 2018. While her focus is weddings, Sutin does offer various goodies for retail sale - including her best-selling French Macarons - at Latte Da Coffee and Gifts, where her Sweet Life Bakery also is located. Interestingly, her French Macarons recipe resulted from playing around in the kitchen while on maternity leave. While working out of her home, Sutin would meet potential customers at Petals & Beans, tying together the baking and floral aspects of a wedding. Sutin’s business - Sweet Life Bakery
- derives its name from enjoying life and returning to old-fashioned baking in the kitchen with grandma. “I remember Grandma with her apron and whisking in a bowl. You don’t see that anymore,” Sutin said. “ I like to teach my kids how to make cookies from scratch. Take all these fresh ingredients and this happens. The message is to keep this craft alive and remember the smells of the ‘50s.”

Styles may Change, Popularity Remains the Same The challenges of cross country transportation in the winter led to the invention of the snowmobile, which was designed for travel across deep snow. In the second half of the 20th century, rapidly evolving designs produced low-speed machines powered by gas engines. Carl Eliason of Wisconsin began making the original handbuilt “motor toboggan” in 1924 and in 1935 Joseph Bombardier assembled and successfully tested the first snowmobile, with a sprocket wheel and a track drive system steered by skis. Edgar and Allen Hetteen and David Johnson of Roseau, Minnesota, were among the first to build a practical snowmobile in the mid-1950s with the 30

Polaris company. The early machines were heavy, but that would change over the years as riders wanted more speed and lighter machines. Many manufacturers began building snowmobiles in the 1960s and 1970s, including a Scorpion plant in Crosby, which began experimenting with track snow machines in 1961 and continued to produce showmobiles until 1981. “There were more than 200 companies that were building snowmobiles in the early 1970s,” said Dave Guenther of Breezy Point, who is president of the Antique Snowmobile Club of America and member of the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame. “That’s when snowmobiling
went nuts. Ski Doos came out in 1958 and they were built for social riding. They were smaller, quicker and easier to ride. Snowmobile clubs started forming in the 1970s. It was a big social craze. Every place you went they were selling snowmobiles like hardware and grocery stores and even the JC Penney stores. It was such a craze.” Today, there’s more competition for winter riding with the growth of off-road machines like the 4-wheelers and side-by-sides that can be used year ‘round. “Minnesota is still a popular state for snowmobiling with 22,000 miles of trails and many active snowmobile clubs,” Guenther said. www.nisswa.com

Pets and their owners get to live the dream in Nisswa. Nisswa is a pet friendly community where your pets can stay, play and even dine. Your pets can stay and get pampered at one of several boarding facilities in the area or they can stay with their families in one of Nisswa’s people “Places to Stay” that accepts pets (see pages 81-88 for a listing of Nisswa’s lodging opportunities). It’s always a good idea to call ahead to confirm pet occupancy before making your reservations. Besides places to stay, Nisswa offers plenty of places to play, including the best parks and trails for walking, running and playing ball with your pets. The many lakes in and around Nisswa also provide a playground for your pets. You’ll see them on boats and playing on shore as you cruise by. You’ll most likely see them at some of the quieter boat launches where they love to jump off the docks to fetch the ball and take a swim in the cool, clear water. It seems silly to say that Nisswa has places to dine for your pet, but www.nisswa.com
it’s true. Stop by BlackRidgeBANK or the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce to get your dog a treat and during the summer, drive through Dairy Queen and get your dog a pup cup. Nisswa even makes it easy to clean up after your dog. While you’re out with your prized pet walking and playing in the parks and on the trails, you will find a Mutt Mitt station outside the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center. Speaking of downtown Nisswa, some downtown store owners allow well-behaved dogs in their stores. All you need to do is ask them before taking your four-legged friend in to shop. When you’re out and about town with your pets, please be considerate of the others around you and keep

in mind that your dog won’t be the only dog in town. Event days can get crowded, so always keep your pet’s safety and comfort in mind. Of course, packing for your pet is key. Make sure you have a leash, and plenty of food and water. If things didn’t come together the way you
planned, you can always get a drink for Fido at the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center located in the heart of downtown Nisswa. The entire staff at the Nisswa Chamber loves pets so feel free to stop by, get a treat and introduce your pets to us.

The Nisswa-stämman Scandinavian Folk Music Festival is held the first weekend in June each year in Nisswa. It has grown over the years, yet the format remains much the same as that first festival in June 2000. “I remember that first concert,” said Paul Wilson, event founder and artistic director. He was working on the microphones and setup, and when he turned around he was happily surprised to see the venue was almost full. The 20th annual Nisswa-stämman will take place Friday and Saturday, June 7-8, 2019, under the majestic Norway pines at the Nisswa Pioneer Village with more than 150 musicians. Special events are in the works to celebrate the festival’s milestone year, including an additional large tent in the sunny, open area of the village to have another stage for musical groups and to provide shade. There will be more musicians, with a goal to bring one musical group from each of four Scandinavian countries – Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. After all these years, the festival’s main purpose remains the same: to bring Scandinavian and Scandinavian/American folk music and dance to the Lakes Area in an event designed for the whole family. www.nisswa.com
“We want families to come, so we have performers and crafts in a kids’ area,” Wilson said. “It’s really a family type event.” Wilson and his wife, Mary Abendroth, are key players who brought the annual Scandinavian music festival to Nisswa so many years ago. They played Scandinavian folk music and attended several “stämma” - or low-key gatherings of musicians – on trips to Sweden. The couple has many friends who play Scandinavian music; they just needed someone to step up to organize a stämman closer to home. “One day we were driving through Nisswa. I saw the pioneer village, and it’s set up a lot like an historical farm with log buildings in Sweden where these were held,” Wilson said. He learned that Lee Anderson owned the property, Anderson later donated the property to the Nisswa Area Historical Society, so Wilson sent an email to Anderson. “He has Swedish heritage and he sent back two sentences: ‘Sounds like a great idea. ... I’m looking forward to the smorgasbord,’” Wilson said. Anderson said Pioneer Village was purchased over time starting in 1943 by his father, Reuben, who was 100 percent Swedish. His parents came to the United States from Orebro, Sweden. “Paul suggested the idea of a stämman, which I thought would be great,” Anderson said. “Over the years I have attended most of the events. I love the people and the children. For many of us, it supports and reinforces our Swedish heritage.” Dick Carlson, of the Nisswa Area Historical Society, recalled Wilson saying all those years ago that Pioneer Village
was ideal for a stämman and asking if the historical society would like to participate. “Saying yes was a no-brainer, and we did,” Carlson said. “To this day, it remains as one of the best decisions we ever made.” That first year of the stämman, most musicians hailed from the Twin Cities. Just as they did back then, a Friday night concert kicks off the weekend of Scandinavian folk music with a fiddlers’ parade along the Paul Bunyan State Trail through Nisswa to Pioneer Village, starting Saturday’s festivities. After a day of music that first year, Wilson recalled seeing Anderson going through the smorgasbord line. “He said, ‘Next year, let’s fly over 10 Swedes,’” Wilson said, so year two featured international musicians. “That’s how it grew, because of Lee.” Wilson added: “It turned out that word was getting around in Sweden, so I was getting emails from Sweden from people wanting to come.” A few years later, organizers added workshops at private homes to the stämman. “That’s grown into quite a big part of it,” Wilson said. In 2009, the Swedish ambassador to the United States visited the festival, and Wilson was honored with the Swedish Council of America’s Award of Merit. The event has evolved from one main stage and a tiny tent to two main stages, a dance barn, a kids’ area and a more intimate musical gathering in the Village’s Summer Kitchen. Since year 10, musicians have come from Scandinavian countries to perform. Most stay with host families in the area.
Wilson said the Nisswa-stämman is unique in that very few places in the United States offer such an event. For more information on being a host family or to volunteer for the 20th annual Nisswa-stämman Scandinavian Folk Music Festival in June, contact Paul Wilson at 218-764-2994.
Event founder Paul Wilson, 67, became interested in Scandinavian music in his late 20s, during the folk revival taking place in the United States and Europe. He played Bob Dylan on his guitar and enjoyed international folk dancing as a recreational hobby. He has Swedish and Norwegian heritage, and started thinking about his roots. He later taught himself to play the fiddle and accordion. He and his wife, Mary Abendroth, played in a five-piece group called Skålmusik, which eventually grew to a group called Skål Klubben. In addition to performing music, they share their love and knowledge of Scandinavian music and culture at schools and libraries across the region.

Firecracker Run turns 10
The Nisswa Firecracker Run, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in Nisswa on Saturday, July 6, has evolved into a holiday tradition for many families. And that’s just what the event founder wanted. The goal from the start, said David Janowiec, was to “make it a staple, make it a tradition.” The first Firecracker Run in 2010 attracted about 380 participants, and numbers have increased about 25 percent each year to the current 2,500 runners, Janowiec said. “I saw an opportunity to reach a lot of people in town for fun, so we added another element of fun,” he said, adding the event gives him the opportunity to return home during his favorite time of the year.
Janowiec grew up in Nisswa and graduated from Pequot Lakes High School. He now works with The Recess Factory, an event management company based in Colorado that puts on the Firecracker Run. He said it’s also become tradition for his staff in Colorado to come to Nisswa for the event. “They love it and look forward to it as a ‘workation,’” Janowiec said. “The Firecracker Run, which has always included both 5k and 10k runs, is more of an experience rather than just another race”, Janowiec said. “We added elements to make it interesting and appealing for people,” he said. “So many people tell us it’s a tradition for them.”

There has always been a Slip’N Slide at the end of the race, though it has evolved into something bigger and better over the years. The end-of-race attractions now include two big inflatable Slip’N Slides and a foam machine that spews red, white and blue bubbles. Don’t forget the crawfish boil. Janowiec’s wife is from New Orleans, and that’s where he experienced his first backyard crawfish boil. “I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh. This is great for large crowds,’” he said, so he incorporated it into the Firecracker Run. People are intrigued by it and love it. “My dad learned how to cook crawfish quick,” Janowiec said, noting they make 300 pounds for the race day event. An unplanned tradition that started that first year revolves around the national anthem. That first year, an announcer asked if there was anyone in the crowd who wanted to step up and sing the anthem before the race. Andrea Schutz, a runner from Hastings, came forward and belted out the anthem, leaving everyone speechless. She’s been doing so ever since. Janowiec said race organizers learned something about firecrackers that first year as well. “We always start the event with a firecracker of some kind,” he said, and that first year they lit Black Cats about 300 yards from the starting line. www.nisswa.com
However, they didn’t clarify with runners that the firecrackers were not meant to signal the start of the race. “We lit them off and everyone started running and people were running over the Black Cats going off,” Janowiec said. “That first year, that was a big oops.” Now they light a five-inch cannon that shoots straight up with one loud boom. The Nisswa Firecracker Run’s success led to an identical event in Colorado that is in its fifth year. “It’s the exact same event except it’s in Colorado,” Janowiec said. The Nisswa event fills him with a sense of pride when old friends, mentors and people he worked for while growing up in Nisswa come up and thank him. As for the 10th anniversary event, Janowiec said organizers plan to add a few surprises at the finish line area to continue to entice participants to stick around for awhile before heading downtown or back to the lake on the holiday weekend. “Now it’s become a hodgepodge Independence Day event where we added a bunch of stuff for people to stick around. Kids love it, and it all ties back to Fourth of July summer fun,” he said.

Kurt Jordi Loves his Clydesdales Kurt Jordi came to the United States from Bern, Switzerland in 1979, and brought with him a background in classical dressage working with Lipizzan stallions. He settled in rural Cass County and began adding to his stable, including his first pair of Clydesdale horses, which he has been bringing to Cragun’s Resort for the past 20 years providing horse-drawn trolley rides for their guests. When asked why Jordi prefers Clydesdales among all draft breeds, he likes to say that, “Clydesdales are the
ones that understand English.” The Clydesdale horses originated from the farm horses of Clydesdale county in Scotland in the 1800’s. Jordi has three Clydesdales on his farm, JJ, Jake and Max, and he rotates the ones he uses to pull the trolley. A typical Clydesdale stands 16 to 18 hands high and weighs 1,800 to 2,000 pounds. Each draft horse can pull 8,000 pounds alone and together, can pull 24,000 pounds. Jordi’s top priority is the well-being of the horses. If the weather is

Once at the resort, it takes approximately 1 hour to assemble the harnesses and hook up the horses to the trolley. Jordi loves showing off his Clydesdales and thoroughly enjoys interacting with the guests staying at Cragun’s Resort. He takes guests along the shores of Gull Lake, narrating stories about the resort along the way. A visit to Cragun’s has become a tradition for many families and memories of Jordi and the horses are a big part of that. Jordi loves seeing the families and watching as they grow and change over the years. He especially likes it when they share their Cragun’s memories and stories with him. Every year, Jordi brings his horses to the Nisswa City of Lights Celebration, the day after Thanksgiving, where he shares his love of the Clydesdales with the thousands of people who are in downtown Nisswa to celebrate www.nisswa.com
the season. It is quite a site to see the majestic Clydesdales marching down Main Street in Nisswa with a wagon full of happy people. Jordi and his Clydesdales are a unique family tradition at Cragun’s Resort and the Nisswa City of Lights Celebration. It’s the lake, it’s the horses, it’s the family time together, it’s the season and it’s Jordi making unforgettable memories with you.

The maximum depth of Pelican is 104 feet with 47% of the lake being 15 feet deep or less. There are also four public accesses on the lake and a public swimming beach. Bluegill, northern pike, walleye and bass are the most common fish in Pelican. The chain covers 7,700 acres, with a maximum depth of 138 feet and connects with the Pine River. The chain is popular for recreational use, but Whitefish also serves as one of the DNR’s primary walleye egg-take sites at the mouth of the Pine River. Because of this, the lake is stocked annually, with at least 5,000,000 walleye fry being put back into the lake from the eggs collected at the walleye trap. Dine Downtown - Nisswa has it All Downtown Nisswa is known for it’s shopping. But did you know, there’s amazing dining options, too? When you stroll Main Street in downtown Nisswa – you are sure to find anything from a treat to a full course meal to suit your liking. Delicious seasonal treats can be found at the Dairy Queen, A&W Restaurant and Nisswa Mini Donuts which are open Spring through Fall. Awesome coffee shops with pastries and scones include StoneHouse Coffee and the Adirondack Coffee Shop. For a full-fledged breakfast, try the eggs benedict at Ganley’s Restaurant.
The breakfasts there are so good! Lunch is also served and a malt shop is attached to the restaurant so you can satisfy that milk shake craving. Check out the micro-brewery on Main Street! Big Axe Brewing and Café has a great patio, fabulous food and on many weekend nights in the summer, there’s live music for you to enjoy. Rafferty’s Pizza has been voted “best pizza” in the Brainerd Lakes Area several times over. Their home-made sauce is to die for and the salads and sandwiches are great, too. If it’s a sweet treat you’re craving – stop by The Chocolate Ox.

You’ve been there, the color of the bag you’re carrying around town is a dead give-away. Those green and purple bags are hard to miss just like the Superman ice cream ring around your kid’s mouths! The newest addition for downtown dining is Main Street Ale House. Owners, Chris and Mike Foy of Foy Hospitality brought a great chef and wonderful food to Main Street in Spring, 2018. Lunch and dinner are served 7 days a week. Foy Hospitality also owns another great restaurant on Gull Lake (Ernie’s on Gull). If it’s adult beverages you’re looking – no problem. The Ye Old Pickle Factory is Nisswa’s municipal bar and off sale liquor store. Catch a summer baseball game on the patio or shoot a game of pool or darts indoors. Anchoring the north end of Main Street is the Nisswa American Legion where lunch, dinner and daily specials are served, including a full bar. You can even play bingo twice a week at the Nisswa American Legion. Next time you’re in town, stop by the Nisswa Welcome Center/Chamber of Commerce, grab a walking map from the friendly staff there and follow the turtles to your favorite eating spot!

Nisswa Lake Park now has walking paths, pavilion, tables, benches and more! A visit to Nisswa Lake Park is a must-do for residents and tourists alike. An official sign now welcomes explorers to the park, which is being developed on the west side of the Highway 371 tunnel that takes people from downtown Nisswa to the park and Nisswa Lake, and vice versa. In addition to walking paths through the park, a pavilion and water garden were installed along with benches, picnic tables and garbage cans. The park will feature a bike shelter location and flagpole with flag as well. Visitors will find magnificent views of Nisswa Lake. Dock slips are available on Nisswa Lake near the park during the open water season with signs directing people from the docks to the park and downtown. Signs at the end of the docks announce they are public docks and open for use. “The docks are used on a consistent basis all summer long, bringing people to the park and downtown shops and restaurants,” said Matthew Hill, Nisswa Parks and Recreation director, noting www.nisswa.com
Making Memories.
that more docks are needed and will be supplied as funds become available. Future park development is dependent upon fundraising. The Friends of Nisswa Lake Park organization continues to accept donations to complete the park development. In 2019, the Department of Natural Resources will install a complete boat ramp with parking for up to 15 trucks and trailers. Gull Lake Trail Work also continues on Nisswa’s portion of a multi-use recreational trail around Gull Lake. A 3.1-mile portion of trail will connect the city of Lake Shore to the tunnel in downtown Nisswa via Lower Roy Lake Road and Hazelwood Drive. Trail users can then find the Paul Bunyan State Trail downtown. Trail construction is still a year or two away. Four miles of trail through Lake Shore is complete. The trail follows a wider shoulder on the redone County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 77/ Interlachen Road from www.nisswa.com
Bar Harbor Supper Club to Sherwood Forest, and the trail is off road from Sherwood Forest to the southern city limits at Sandy Point Road. A one-mile trail segment linking Lake Shore and Nisswa remains to be built. Fundraising is underway, and the city of Lake Shore encourages donations to its Field of Interest Fund. Fairview Township is also raising funds to undertake its nearly 8-mile portion of trail. Completion is likely a year or two away. When finished, the Gull Lake Trail will be a 21-mile, paved, multi-use trail that will travel through four communities around Gull Lake - East Gull Lake, Fairview Township, Lake Shore and Nisswa. The Gull Lake Trail will connect the cities and townships into one larger Gull Lake community, bringing new access to resorts, restaurants, parks and nature preserves while providing a safe space off the road for pedestrians and bicyclists.

For five decades, Brainerd International Raceway has hosted some of the best racers in the world. Located six miles north of Brainerd, BIR offers race fans the best motorsports that Minnesota has to offer. And the 2019 season promises to continue that same tradition. From April through October, BIR’s race schedule is packed full with drag racing, road racing, drifting, Superbike racing, autocross, cruising shows and watercross, where snowmobiles race on open water! There’s always great family entertainment at BIR where many weekends include two different types of racing taking place simultaneously – all for the price of a single ticket. The main event on the race schedule is the 38th Annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, scheduled for August 15-18, 2019. The Nationals feature the world’s top drag racers piloting the fastest dragsters on the planet for a four-day display of nitro-fueled drag racing entertainment. Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars, which feature 10,000horsepower, are fire-belching rockets-on-wheels that scream down the www.nisswa.com
quarter-mile dragstrip at 330 mph. As they whiz past, the grandstands rattle, sending an unmistakable vibration through the crowd. It all takes about three seconds, so don’t blink. The pits are always open to all fans, and drivers are accessible for autographs and photos, which is what sets the NHRA Nationals apart from any other motorsports. But BIR’s open campground, affectionately called The Zoo, is what really sets BIR apart from other tracks on the NHRA circuit. The celebration is always in high gear at The Zoo, where campers can enjoy live music, fireworks and an endless parade of unique people-moving party wagons. BIR’s spectator events are always family friendly and affordable. In fact, kids who are 12 years old and younger get in free to every event (including Nationals) as long as they’re accompanied by an adult. Even parking is free for all events except The Nationals. For those who prefer to be on the track rather than in the grandstands, BIR has many opportunities to get behind the wheel. The Wednesday Night Street
Drags program is open to anyone with a street legal car, helmet and $25. The BIR Performance Driving School is ideal for anyone who’s ever wondered what it’s like to strap themselves into a race car and fly around a road course. It’s a single-day school with classroom instruction followed by driving sessions. BIR also gives high-speed rides in exotic sports cars, such as a Lamborghini, a Lotus and a Corvette. Check out BIR’s website for more details: www.BrainerdRaceway.com. See you at the track.

Who won BEST Small Town in Minnesota? NISSWA DID! Thanks to WCCO (our Minneapolis CBS Affiliate), the community of Nisswa was chosen as the Best Small Town in Minnesota. The category is actually “Best Small Town with population of 5,000 or less”. There are approximately 740 towns in Minnesota and 594 have populations of 5,000 or less. According to the 2010 census, Nisswa’s population is 1,941. Although, with beautiful lakes, fantastic amenities, seasonal homes and thousands of annual visitors, the population SOARS to much more in the summer. Nisswa started as a railroad community. When the railroad first arrived, it opened up the area for tourism, and what once took 4 days to travel by car from Minneapolis, now took 6 hours by rail. When asked about “why Nisswa?”, you’ll hear things like “I loved growing up here, so when I was done with college I wanted to move back here and raise my family in Nisswa”. Nisswa is a very welcoming community. Not www.nisswa.com
only is Nisswa home to 3rd and 4th generations of families, new families are choosing to live here where the quality of life is great, the economy is strong and the energy for “community” is alive and well. Location, location, location…2 ½ hours from Minneapolis, Fargo or Duluth. Nisswa is the BEST Small Town in Minnesota.

Major Improvements in Store for Nisswa School Nisswa Elementary School is one of the schools in the Brainerd School District with expansion and renovation plans that will result in much-needed space and better security. Construction will start in May on an estimated $12 million in improvements to Nisswa School, which currently houses about 330 students. In the spring of 2018, Brainerd School District voters approved three bond referendum ballot questions for $145.71 million to improve all school district
buildings as part of an improvement project that totals $205 million. The goal from the start was for Nisswa Elementary School to have larger core spaces to house 425 students and the current plans offer that. A second level will be built over part of the facility to gain additional space. The current design features additions for a second gym, a secure entrance, upper grade level classrooms and offices including remodeled space through much of the rest of the building.
The second gym will offer a full-size basketball court with a drop-down partition. This will allow two gym classes to take place at one time, as well as offer community use of the gyms for basketball, volleyball and pickleball leagues. The stage will remain in place with an added lift to make it handicap-accessible. A new main entrance and office area will be relocated to the middle part of the school where existing doors are already located. The old entrance will be locked when the school

day starts so all visitors will have to enter through the new main entrance and office. The school will be able to host early childhood family classes at night so parents won’t have to drive to Brainerd. The school will offer three classrooms per grade, a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) room, two early childhood classrooms and one Kinder Club room, with two flexible classrooms to use if there is an influx of students. Security measures will allow different parts of the school to be locked down after hours to allow for community access. “Our plan fulfills the district’s promise

to our community and dramatically impacts student learning,” Principal Molly Raske said. “In the beginning I knew it was going to be amazing, but I never dreamt it would turn into what it has.” The doors near the Nisswa Children’s Community Library will be an after-hours entrance into the school so the public can use the library and gyms, while the rest of school remains locked and inaccessible. “So it really is a community school where we can have recreational opportunities,” Raske said. Construction will run from May 2019 to fall 2020.

Nisswa - Open Year ‘round Nisswa is open year ‘round. Summer might be the peak tourist season but spring, fall and winter are also alive with things to do in Nisswa. Spring is awesome, the ice melts, the golf courses come alive and the wildlife migrate back to the area. Summer offers all the things we love that come along with the warm weather. Fall is fabulous, the leaves are vibrant, the fishing is amazing and the eagle and loon viewing is phenomenal. Don’t discount winter, when you can ice fish, snowmobile, downhill or cross-country ski and enjoy outdoor ice skating or ice hockey. The best part of the four seasons is
that Nisswa has it all; lodging, dining AND shopping! Years ago, many of the downtown shops were considered “seasonal” businesses. There are still a couple, but most of the stores are open year ‘round. Besides that, Nisswa has the BEST variety, the FINEST specialty retail establishments and Nisswa takes PRIDE in offering exemplary customer service. Shopping in Nisswa is about the EXPERIENCE of being surrounded by small, unique, independent stores. The quaint shopping district is inviting and easily accessible. Triangle Gas Station (south end of town), is only 0.4 miles which makes strolling through Nisswa an easy jaunt. Parking is plentiful, so explore, shop and absorb the small town charm of downtown Nisswa. You can even relax along your way at one of Nisswa’s beautiful parks. Browse and shop your favorite stores, they’re all locally owned and operated, and many of the owners are at their stores every day. Did you know that in downtown Nisswa you can get your hair cut, grab a latte, buy a pair of jeans, find a lamp for your home and even buy or rent a bike? Not only that, you can buy a hammer, get your nails done, eat a pizza, buy a pair of shoes, get a baby toy, eat ice cream, buy a chair, get a new purse, find a book, get your eyes checked, have breakfast and fill your car with gas… all in downtown Nisswa. You can do all of this and more without even leaving Main Street. The stores are open 7 days a week in the Summer. In the Fall, Winter and Spring the stores may have shorter hours, but they are open. If you’d like more information about downtown Nisswa stores, hours or anything else “Nisswa”, the Nisswa Welcome Center/ www.nisswa.com

Paul Bunyan State Trail Everyday Recreation The Paul Bunyan State Trail is one of the longest rail-trails in the country. It follows an inactive railroad corridor belt built in 1893. The trail passes through forests, by lakes, rivers and streams, with flat and open stretches featuring hills and picturesque views. The best part of the trail is that it runs right through the heart of downtown Nisswa. As the central hub of the Paul Bunyan State Trail, Nisswa offers walkers, runners, bicyclists, inline skaters and snowmobilers a great place to stop to eat, shop or take in a community event. Bike fix-it stations can be found in 2 locations in downtown Nisswa; just outside the Nisswa Chamber Welcome Center and at the MN Department of Natural Resources dedicated trail parking lot. Trail maps and more information about the area can be found at the Nisswa Chamber Welcome Center which is located right along the Paul Bunyan State Trail in downtown Nisswa. Stop in and say hi, it’s always nice to meet a new face. Public restrooms are located at the Welcome Center and are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. www.nisswa.com

Nisswa - Home to Women’s Golf Leagues Golfing at Grand View Lodge is not Elaine Lancaster’s first rodeo, but it is her favorite. The ringleader of a small group of women who regularly enjoy golf, nature and companionship, Lancaster calls the Nisswa resort home because, as she says, “There is no better staff, period.” For Lancaster, there is also no better group of women to play golf with than her Thursday morning group that plays at The Pines at Grand View Lodge. The group, which started five years
ago, has grown from four players to 20, but always welcomes new players. There are, however, a few special rules that Lancaster says are the key to this group’s success. “You don’t have to be able to play,” Lancaster said. “That doesn’t make a difference. We have one woman that has played with us a long time and has been a member at Grand View for a long time, but she’s had two consecutive shoulder injuries and she cannot hit a full ball anymore. She comes out with

us almost every morning and from 70 yards out she plays. We welcome everybody.” “You just have to know, you can’t bring your rule book if you come and play with us. You have to be willing to play with everybody. We are all equal and we all play with one another willingly and happily.” “If you’re good with those and that’s the kind of golf you want than certainly and obviously join us.” The “no rules” rule applies to everything. Some players keep score. Others don’t bother. Some women play 18 holes, most play nine or as Lancaster says “nine and dine.” “We come in and have lunch together,” Lancaster said. “It’s very seldom that when we sit down someone asks, ‘how was your game?’” “It’s more about what a beautiful day it was or if you had a good time. Of course, it’s nice if you can play well.” Lancaster is a Minnesota transplant from Texas. Many in the group winter in warmer climates, but are excited to return here to their summer homes. www.nisswa.com
“I think what makes our group so unique is that some of these gals have played golf a long time,” Lancaster said. “I’ve played for 28 years and though sometimes not being able to play and whatever, my game certainly isn’t what it used to be. But we have so many diverse backgrounds. In the winter we scatter. We’re in California, Mexico, Texas, South Carolina, Florida, but we still stay in touch and can’t wait until we get back.” “They are very special women. Some have had injuries and they’re just not able to play like they used to so nine holes does them great. It’s no pressure. It’s absolutely no pressure golf. It’s just enjoying these beautiful courses. How could you not? When you can hear the loons and see the eagles, it’s just gorgeous.” For those seeking a more competitive group, Grand View offers a variety of women’s groups and outings. But for Lancaster, there is nothing better than playing with her group. “We are so funny,” Lancaster said. “We’re here for the camaraderie because HOME CARE SERVICES

we’ve earned the right to be here. We’ve raised our families. We’ve done our jobs. We’ve done the laundry and this is where we want to be.” “I’ve known some of these women for 20 years and I will tell you that every one of these women that I play with here are special in my heart. I call them a friend and I can’t wait to get back and see them.” The group also plays at The Preserve and they do sometimes play on Tuesday, but Thursday mornings at the Pines is usually where you’ll find them. To join the group, just ask one of Lancaster’s favorite staff and they’ll get you connected with her. “Tim (Martin) or Jack (Wawro) or any of the guys can get you into the game,” Lancaster said. “We welcome anybody. We have people who have just learned how to play. In fact, a couple has just started playing and you can kind of not be embarrassed because we’ve all been there. We even have our own cheerleader. We cheer everyone on. We love new players. Again, whatever your skill or lack thereof, we welcome you.” HOSPICE SERVICES
Our hospice offers services your family will need most at the end of life, which include: physician-directed care, skilled nursing, home health aides, social work, spiritual care, and volunteer services.
