Welcome to the Cuyuna Lakes

Welcome to the beautiful Cuyuna lakes area, where small-town charm meets the heart of lake country! Our area, encompassing Bay Lake, Crosby, Cuyuna, Deerwood, Emily, Ironton, Riverton and Trommald, is a hidden gem with a unique history and plenty of offer.

Once a bustling mining hub, the Cuyuna Iron Range played a vital role during WWI and WWII, producing massive amounts of high-manganese ore. Later, it also became known for the iconic Scorpio Snowmobiles from the Crosby area. However, as those industries quieted in the 1980s, uncertainty loomed over the future of the small communities that make up the Cuyuna Lakes region.

But then came the Cuyuna Country State Recreational Area and everything changed. The abandoned mining pits were embraced by nature, forming breathtaking crystal clear lakes. They’ve become the perfect backdrop for kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming and fishing, attracting both locals and visitors alike.

The real magic happened when our visionary residents turned the mining scars into globally recognized mountain biking and hiking trails. Now, the Cuyuna lakes area is a year-round haven for outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventure amidst the mining mountains. And as our recreational area blossomed, so did our business communities. The Cuyuna Lakes now boasts a vibrant entertainment scene, featuring award-winning restaurants, warm and inviting coffee shops, a local brewery, a confectionery, a creamery and charming specialty gift shops and boutiques lining our main streets. There’s truly something here for everyone to enjoy!

We can’t wait to share the wonders of the Cuyuna Lakes with you and have you as our guest!
