Welcome back, Jess: ‘New Girl’ kicks off its final season Cover Story this week
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaAs prime-time romances go, few are as compelling as the friends-first budding relationships that take years to develop. One of television’s sweetest couples is about to return to the airwaves, and fans couldn’t be happier.
After years of will-they-won’tthey angst, it looks as if Jess (Zooey Deschanel, “Elf,” 2003) and Nick (Jake Johnson, “Paper Heart,” 2009) might finally live happily ever after in a new season of “New Girl,” premiering Tuesday, April 10, on Fox. The season 7 opener will be a bittersweet beginning for fans, as it marks the debut of the show’s final season. What’s worse is that there are just eight episodes to look forward to, as opposed to the usual 22 to 25.
Nevertheless, loyal “New Girl” viewers will likely cherish these last moments with Jess and the gang. At the end of season 6, Jess confessed her feelings for Nick, and season 7 makes a big time jump to three years into the future. Jess and Nick are just returning from a European book tour, while friends Cece (Hannah Simone, “Kicking & Screaming”) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield, “Modern Men”) are busy raising their young daughter, Ruth. Also, Winston (Lamorne Morris, “The Assistants”) and Aly
(Nasim Pedrad, “Saturday Night Live”) are now married with a baby on the way.
In typical Jess Day fashion, series star Deschanel has a positive outlook on “New Girl’s” last hurrah. In an exclusive interview at the 2018 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour, she told “ET’s” Leanne Aguilera that she was very happy with the show’s final season.
“I feel like we covered a lot of our classic sort of scenarios in the last season,” she said. “The writers did a good job. There are a lot of ‘Easter eggs.’”
Fans should be on the lookout for so-called Easter eggs, which are special hidden messages or jokes referring to previous seasons of the show. It’s been a long
haul for the cast and crew of the comedy, and a lot has happened since it premiered in 2011. It all started when young schoolteacher Jess came home to find her boyfriend in bed with another woman and left to find a new home. She ended up moving into a loft with three strangers — Nick, Schmidt and Coach (Damon Wayans Jr., “Happy Endings”), the latter of whom left the loft to move in with his girlfriend in the second episode, making room for Winston to move in. Jess’s childhood bestie, Cece, is a frequent visitor to the loft and a core member of the cast of characters.
Late Laughs
Conan
to Pedrad,
the final season features a number of memorable returning guest stars, including Wayans Jr., Dermot Mulroney (“My Best Friend’s Wedding,” 1997), Nelson Franklin (“The Millers”), Sam Richardson (“Veep”), David Walton (“Perfect Couples”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“True Lies,” 1994) and Rob Reiner (“All in the Family”). Tig Notaro (“One Mississippi”) also makes a special guest appearance, and J.B. Smoove (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) portrays Winston’s father, whom Winston meets for the very first time.
The wrap-up season promises plenty of laughs as the award-winning cast and crew bid adieu to characters that have captured the hearts of TV viewers for years. A breakout hit of its debut fall season, “New Girl” drew more than 10 million viewers to the premiere. The show was particularly popular with critics, who’ve praised the performances of Deschanel, Schmidt and Johnson in particular. Entertainment industry pundits have taken notice over the years, honoring the show with numerous nominations, including five Golden Globe nods and five Emmy nominations. The program won the 2011 Critics’ Choice Television Award for Most Exciting New Series, Deschanel won the 2012 Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series and Simone won the 2012 Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Breakout Star — Female.
Unfortunately, the ratings have waned over the years, clocking in around two million for the season 6 finale, which led to the show almost being canceled at the end of last season. Luckily for fans, “New Girl” has been granted a short reprieve to say farewell.
Fans of Deschanel may be interested to know that the actress has been cast as Belle in a live concert version of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” alongside Kelsey Grammer (“Frasier”) as Lumiere, Rebel Wilson (“Pitch Perfect,” 2012) as LeFou and Anthony Evans (“The Voice”) as The Beast. The concert will take place over two nights at the legendary Hollywood Bowl, but no plans for a television broadcast have yet been announced.
Saying goodbye to this beloved cast of characters won’t be easy, but fans should take heart in the knowledge that there are eight whole episodes of “New Girl” left to enjoy. Catch the show’s final season premiere when it airs Tuesday, April 10, on Fox.

In an interview, education secretary Betsy DeVos says she’s not unqualified for the job, just “misunderstood.” The actual word she used was “misunderstoodinated.”

In a new interview, Elon Musk was asked who inspires him and he said “Kanye West.” Kanye was like, “What a coincidence, the guy who inspires me is also Kanye West.” I read about a student in New York who just won $250,000 for his research on the Irish Potato Famine. He was also voted the least fun person at a St. Patrick’s Day party.

After residents in Birmingham complained about the terrible smell, New York City has agreed to stop sending rail cars full of the city’s excess sewage to a landfill in Alabama. Yeah, train cars filled with human waste and an unbearable smell. Or, as that’s called in New York, the subway.
Initial reports said Rex Tillerson found out he was fired over Twitter. Because, apparently, a Snapchat story just wasn’t presidential enough.

At this point, it seems like the entirety of Trump’s governing philosophy comes down to “Will it fit on a hat that I can sell to people?”

After Democratic candidate Conor Lamb declared victory last night in Pennsylvania’s special election, a Fox & Friends host suggested that Lamb won because of his attractive looks. Because if there’s one thing that Congress is full of, it’s stone cold hotties.
Adult film star Stormy Daniels has launched an online fundraiser to cover the legal costs of breaking a confidentiality agreement she made with President Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen. So far, out of the $100,000 she’s asking for, she’s only managed to raise $5 billion.

Viva Las Vegas, baby! Everything is bigger, brighter and bolder in Sin City, and the food is no exception. World-renowned chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Tom Colicchio and Wolfgang Puck all have restaurants there, and the desserts can be some of the most elaborate culinary creations to be found anywhere on the planet.
When it comes to sweets for special occasions, cakes will always be a favorite, and in Vegas there’s only one place to go for the biggest and most awe-induc-
week and currently airs Monday evenings.
From the front, Freed’s looks like a typical neighborhood bakery, albeit one with desserts that really stand out. The cameras, though, get to go where walk-in customers never do: into the back room where the artists make some of the city’s most elaborate cakes.
Previous episodes have seen the crew make some of the most jaw-dropping and beautiful cakes imaginable. We’ve seen them build and decorate a three-footlong classic car, come up with a unique beer unicorn and even a
spades. Whether it’s magicians Penn and Teller looking for a custom cake to celebrate their Vegas show’s 25th anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Newton ordering a complicated dress cake for a bridal shower, or even Cirque du Soleil celebrating a performance milestone, big names are often attached to the desserts being prepared.
The real fun here, though, is watching the cakes come to life. These aren’t just desserts — they
really are works of art, and the planning and execution that has to go into each and every one of them can be mind-boggling. From conception to the baking to actual decorating, the team of bakers and decorators works like a welloiled machine to create breathtaking wonders time after time.
Everything is bigger and brighter in Vegas, and the cakes are no exception. New episodes of “Vegas Cakes” currently air Monday evenings on Food Network.

Sweet, sweet desserts: Cakes are edible art in ‘Vegas Cakes’
CHANNEL GUIDE
Demands met: ‘Ransom’ returns for a second season
By K.A. Taylor TV MediaSweating palms, heart racing, lips quivering — in a hostage situation, whether you’re the victim, the hostage taker or the negotiator, all three symptoms could apply to you at any time. Solid writing can evoke such sensory reactions even through television and computer screens, which may well explain the success of one of CBS’s latest crime dramas. There are countless reasons why one might be held for “Ransom,” and the latest is explored Saturday, April 14, with the show’s second episode of its sophomore season.
While the initial vibe of a crime drama might conjure up notions of whodunnits, what sets “Ransom” vastly apart from its fellows is the motivations of the Crisis Resolution team and where it places its priorities. Veering away from rigid binaries, the series dwells in a grey space, where the need to save the hostage reigns primary and catching the criminal submits to a secondary position. Crisis Resolution is led by highly observant and clever negotiator Eric Beaumont (Luke Roberts, “Black Sails”). Although the prominent and obvious lead of the series, Eric relies heavily on his entire team to successfully assess each ransom situation. His success depends on team members such as Zara Hallam (Nazneen Contractor, “The Border”), an ex-cop who knows her way around policy and procedure, including where the rules can be bent and broken, should such a situation arise. Alongside Zara and Eric is Oliver Yates (Brandon Jay McLaren, “Graceland”), a psychological profiler whose skills often bleed out into his observations of co-workers, though largely from a place of care and compassion.
Rounding off the team is the now slightly more seasoned newbie, Maxine Carlson (Sarah Greene, “Penny Dreadful”), an up-and-coming negotiator under Eric’s tutelage. It’s established right from the start of the series that there’s a history between Maxine and Eric, though it’s not quite what you’d expect. It also acts as the main motivation for Maxine’s own journey into the world of hostage negotiation.
At the conclusion of the show’s first season (spoilers coming up), the past that links Eric and Maxine came full to the fore. The killer of Maxine’s mother, Damian Delaine (Carlo Rota, “Jane the Virgin”), is on parole,
which conveniently coincides with a national — potentially even international — threat. After Maxine admits to having contact with Damian, Eric opens up about the true nature of her mother’s death and Delaine’s twisted desire for martyrdom. A moment of catharsis is quickly halted, however, when Eric receives some terrifying news about his own family.
Season 2 picks up right where the first concluded, with Eric and the Crisis Resolution team struggling to find the balance between resolving personal, immediate crisis situations and those of potential clients and agencies in need. Crisis Resolution is
stronger than ever before, but no doubt its members’ dedication to the team — and each other — will be tested as this new season progresses.
“Ransom” boasts some unique origins. The series was developed initially by four different broadcasting corporations from four different countries: the U.S., Canada, France and Germany. Though Germany’s involvement has since wavered, the fact that these nations all saw the potential for the series and found themselves drawn to investing in its development speaks volumes for the ingenuity of its subject matter and the freshness with which the hostage
narrative is approached. The international involvement is also visible onscreen, as the series has been filmed in Toronto, Canada, and Nice, France, with season 2 adding Budapest, Hungary, to the mix.
The key international element of the series, however, comes from the source that inspired it: famed hostage negotiator Laurent Combalbert. Combalbert’s own path has some clear influence in the series, in particular his drive to start up his own global company, the Agency of Dedicated Negotiators (ADN) in 2013. While no longer active in the field, Combalbert dedicates his time as a speaker and
trainer, hoping to inspire future negotiators and to help the field flourish and grow as technological advancements arise, whether in high crisis situations involving life or death, or merely within the boardroom. Perhaps it is this unique, renowned influence that has helped showrunners and writers to craft a more honest narrative, compelling CBS and the series’ legion of fans to clamor for a second season.
The high-tension chaos evoked by scenes of hostage negotiation is at once terrifying and exhilarating, so long as one remains an observer and not a participant. “Ransom” brings
viewers as close as it can to living and breathing such a traumatic experience, by presenting a vast array of hostage and negotiation scenarios without placing too much emphasis on those doing the negotiating over those whose lives or livelihoods hang in the balance.
With complex characters, unexpected plot twists and plenty of stressful situations, this series is definitely worth an hour a week of your time. Prepare to hold your Saturday evening hostage by demanding to watch the next episode of “Ransom,” airing Saturday, April 14, on CBS.
