Premiere of AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead: World Beyond’ pushed back
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaThese are trying times indeed.
While uncertainty looms in the real world, entertainment can serve as a welcome distraction, if only for a short time. One of television’s most popular series is offering fans a reprieve with a new tale of survival and perhaps even hope.
Teenagers embark on an epic quest beyond the walls of their safe community in “The Walking Dead: World Beyond,” slated to premiere later this year on AMC. The TWD spinoff focuses on the first generation to grow up during the crisis, with a focus on high school student Iris (Aliyah Royale, “The Red Line”) and her adoptive sister Hope (Alexa Mansour, “How to Get Away With Murder”) as they leave the safety of their com munity. Nico Tortorella (“Young er”) also stars as Felix, a rule-fol lowing 30-year-old community se curity officer. Before the apoca lypse, Iris and Hope’s father saved Felix from a life on the streets, and
he feels indebted to serve as the girls’ guardian.
The series was initially scheduled to premiere on Sunday, April 12, but in March AMC announced that it was going to push the debut until “later this year,” which came as a surprise since the entire first season of the limited twoseason series has finished filming. However, given the current circumstances, it is understandable that AMC would
“Fear the Walking Dead,” on Prime Video.
Regardless of when it premieres, “World Beyond” is sure to attract a global audience. It’s a good thing that AMC has already lined up a worldwide distribution deal. The show will air on AMC in North America, of course. Prime will carry the series in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and most of Europe. AMC Networks International will air the show in Latin America,

noff, including an ominous premise, gruesome special effects and a talented cast. Emmy winner Julia Ormond (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” 2008) leads as charismatic community leader Elizabeth. “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” co-creator Scott M. Gimple had high praise for the actress when her casting was announced in November.
“We are thrilled to have Julia join our merry band,” Gimple said in a Variety article. “I’m grateful for the talent, grace, intelligence and humor she has brought to our set, our show and to this role.”
In 2010, Ormond won an Emmy for her role in HBO’s movie “Temple Grandin,” and she was nominated for another Emmy two years later for her guest-starring turn on “Mad Men.” Her other career highlights include the 1994 silver screen epic “Legends of the Fall” and the 1995 remake of “Sabrina.” But while Ormond may be the most famous of the bunch, the show’s focus is squarely on its young stars. Royale portrays intelligent, strong-willed teenager Iris, who leads the charge into the unknown. After performing in church, school and community plays, Royale landed the leading role of Jira Calder-Brennan on the CBS drama “The Red Line” opposite Noah Wyle (“ER”).
Mansour, who plays Iris’s disillusioned wild-child sister Hope, has appeared in the films “Unfriended: Dark Web” (2018) and “#SquadGoals” (2018) and will soon be seen in the indie feature “She’s in Portland.” TV fans may recognize her from her memorable recurring role as Faiza on ABC’s hugely popular “How to Get Away With Murder.” Mansour’s other small-screen credits include “SEAL Team,” “Bull” and “Madam Secretary.”
Nicolas Cantu (“Sofia the First”) portrays 15-year-old Elton, a thoughtful, intellectually curious orphan of the apocalypse who is eager to continue the work of his scientist parents. Cantu may be young, but he’s been acting for years. His voice work credits include “The Amazing World of Gumball” and “Dragons: Rescue Riders” On television, he’s appeared in such popular shows as “The Unicorn,” “The Good Place” and “Raven’s Home.”
Bernie Sanders is now refusing to release his full medical record. The senator defended himself. He said, “It’s not my fault no one took records during the bubonic plague! They didn’t have much record-keeping at the time.”
A Little Late With Lilly Singh
Now, I don’t agree with this, but traditionally you go on a first date with a guy, and he picks up the tab. With two girls, you’re both just sitting there forever waiting for the other person to pay. Eventually, it’s just two skeletons in nice dresses sitting at the Olive Garden.

President Trump promised that, if he’s re-elected, he’ll build 500 miles of border wall. And if he’s not re-elected, he’ll just draw a wall with a Sharpie.
I saw one of the hot new trends this year are tiny purses. They’re perfect if you only want to carry one Altoid. It’s tiny, but somehow it still takes you 10 minutes to find your keys.

I would say the president is starting to unravel, but that would imply he was “raveled” in the first place.
The fact that he’s a bad criminal doesn’t make it not a crime. If being bad at something makes you not that thing, then Trump is not a business owner or a husband.

“Rising High” (2020)
This German film, also known as “Betonrausch,” chronicles the criminal careers of two real estate criminals. David Kross (“The Keeper,” 2018) and Frederick Lau (“Man from Beirut,” 2019) star as Viktor and Gerry, two fraudsters who manage to get very rich by nefarious means, while Janina Uhse (“Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten”) plays Nicole, a banker who is indispensable to the success of their schemes. Though they enjoy their wealthy, lavish lifestyle at first, things eventually spin out of control, and the three crooks are forced to confront their wrongdoings and decide what really matters to them. Can they let go of the criminal empire they’ve built? Or will they go down with the ship?
“The Innocence Files”
In 1992, Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld founded the Innocence Project, a not-for-profit organization that works to exonerate the wrongfully convicted. Now, Scheck and Neufeld have partnered with Netflix for this docuseries that is set to premiere on Wednesday, April 15. Eight real cases are featured and broken down into the three categories: evidence, witnesses and the prosecution. The series showcases the fatal flaws in the American criminal justice system that cause innocent people to lose years of their life in maximum-security prisons for crimes they didn’t commit, often based on false testimonies and unreliable science. In an interview, Neufeld and Scheck commented that they “hope these stories motivate people to take action.”
“Outer Banks”
On Wednesday, April 15, don’t miss the premiere of this Netflix original teen drama series that focuses on a group known as the “Pogues,” who live on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in a bad end of town. Chase Stokes (“Tell Me Your Secrets”) stars as the group’s leader, John B, who is determined to find his father, who disappeared while trying to salvage a sunken ship. Making up the rest of the group are Madelyn Cline (“Boy Erased,” 2018) as queen bee Sarah Cameron; Madison Bailey (“Black Lightening”) as Kiara, an athletic hippie; Jonathan Daviss (“Age of Summer,” 2018) as Pope, the genius of the group; Rudy Pankow (“The Politician”) as John B’s best friend, the mischievous but loyal JJ; Austin North (“I Didn’t Do It”) as Sarah’s privileged boyfriend Topper; and Drew Starkey (“Love, Simon,” 2018) as Rafe,
Sarah’s manipulative older brother who regularly gets them into trouble. When John B convinces the group to help him find his father, they discover a treasure map and an ancient secret that takes them on an epic adventure that could change their lives.
“Sergio”
Wagner Moura (“Narcos”) stars as Sergio Vieira de Mello in this film premiering Friday, April 17. Sergio has had an impressive career working as a UN diplomat and negotiating deals with everyone from foreign presidents to war criminals in an effort to keep the world safe. After years of missions, he is ready to settle down and leave his life of adventure behind in favor of a simple life with the woman he loves, Carolina (Ana de Armas, “Knives Out,” 2019). Things are suddenly complicated when on his final mission in Baghdad a bomb destroys the UN headquarters while he’s inside. Now his mission for peace has become a fight for survival. This heart-wrenching film is based on the life of the real Sergio Vieira de Mello, who died in 2003, and was posthumously awarded the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights.
WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME “Bosch” Season 6
On Friday, April 17, don’t miss the Season 6 premiere of this procedural drama based on the many crime novels written by Michael Connelly about the cases of Det. Harry Bosch. Each season thus far has focused on one or more of Connelly’s 31 novels, and Season 6 is based on the events of “The Overlook,” Connelly’s 13th novel to feature the detective. Bosch joins forces with the FBI as he investigates the murder of a medical physicist and

spinoff: ‘Chopped’ alum Conant pulls double duty this week
By Michelle Rose TV MediaThis is one of those shows that can easily be kept fresh by changing the theme. And that has clearly been Food Network’s strategy throughout ths show’s 45-season run, with the launch of special editions, tournaments and even spinoffs, including “Chopped Champions,” “Chopped Grill Masters” and “Chopped Junior.”
The latest addition to the “Chopped” family is “Chopped Sweets,” which airs Mondays on Food Network.
This one is an actual spinoff, whereas 2019’s “Chopped: Sweets
Showdown” was a five-part, dessert-themed tournament with a $50,000 prize. And that explains why Scott Conant is at the helm of “Chopped Sweets” instead of “Chopped” host Ted Allen.
In fact, Conant serves as both host and judge in this series. The three-round competition format, the weekly $10,000 prize, the mystery baskets and even the kitchen are the same as “Chopped.” But true to its title, “Chopped Sweets” focuses solely on desserts and sugary confections. So we probably won’t be seeing Rocky Mountain oysters in those baskets anytime soon (or maybe we will as it still shares the same spirit as “Chopped”).
To give you an idea of how it works, the April 13 episode is titled “Breakfast for Dessert.” The chefs will be tasked with whipping up breakfast-themed desserts, and you can expect a few mystery ingredients like a coffee drink or even waffle dough as they compete in each round.
You might wonder why Conant, a chef and restaurateur known for his pasta, is hosting a sweets-themed contest. You’ll recall Conant previously hosted “Best Baker in America,” so he has experience with hosting dessert competitions. Plus, the Italian food connoisseur is a regular
judge and a fan favorite on “Chopped” (do not serve him raw red onions), and a familiar face typically gives a new series a stronger start.
Speaking of parent show “Chopped,” Conant is the judge to beat on the April 14 installment of “Beat the Judge,” a series of special-themed episodes airing this month. Three returning champions will have to take down Conant in each round and avoid elimination. And the mystery ingredients should be just as memorable — especially when Conant has a fierce hatred for one of them.

Bump in the night
New season of ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ lands on FX
By Rachel Jones TV MediaPut down your wooden stakes and get ready to die laughing: Season 2 of FX’s horror-comedy series “What We Do in the Shadows” premieres Wednesday, April 15. The show follows a set of four vampire roommates living their best life-after-death in New York City. Hundreds of years old, these quirky characters are constantly trying to figure out how to survive in a modern world, and they give a brand-new meaning to nightlife in the Big Apple.
This mockumentary-style series follows Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak, “Four Lions,” 2010) as the fearless leader of the four roommates. Once a soldier in the Ottoman Empire, he’s now an avid basketball fan. He’s assisted by his familiar (or supernatural subordinate), Guillermo (Harvey Guillen, “The Internship,” 2013), whom he mostly torments.
Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry, “Toast of London”) is another headliner. He claims to have been Jack the Ripper and enjoys creating sexually themed topiaries. His wife, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou, “The Festival,” 2018), believes she has found her reincarnated lover, who has a little trouble keeping his head on straight.
Season 1 featured several guest stars, including Tilda Swinton, Evan Rachel Wood and Danny Trejo. It seems they’ve chosen well, as each of these stars has appeared as vampires in other films and television series. Swinton headlined as a romantically driven vampire in the 2013 film “Only Lovers Left Alive.” Wood had a substantial arc as a vampire queen in the extremely popular TV show “True Blood.” And Trejo appeared in the cult-classic 1996 flick “From Dusk till Dawn” as a vampiric bartender.
Hopefully, Season 2 will live up to the legacy of the show’s freshman run. It’s expected to include some well-known stars, too, including Mark Hamill. In case you’re wondering: No, Luke Skywalker was not a vampire. But Hamill did voice a character in the 1998 Cartoon Network special “Mina and the Count: The Vampire Who Came to Dinner.” Ap-
parently, FX has a fun and specific method for choosing the show’s guests.
It’s clear that series creators, writers and directors Jemaine Clement (who you might know from “Legion” and “Flight of the Conchords”) and Taika Waititi (who is the Oscar-winning director of last year’s “Jojo Rabbit,” as well as the latest “Thor” movies) have done their homework on vampiric history. But that’s no surprise, given that the two of them also wrote, directed and starred in the 2014 film of the same name that spawned this series. The movie won several nominations and awards, including Best Screenplay at the 2016 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards and Best Comedy Film at the Denver Film Critics Society,.
This amusing follow-up series premiered for the first time at New York Comic Con in October 2018 and was very well received right off the bat. The show follows the documentary style that was made famous by shows such as “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation,” but with a much darker twist. The jokes are fast-paced and biting, and the show has received consistently high marks from critics and viewers alike.
As far as the vampires themselves go, the series strikes a similar chord to “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992) — if that classic was hysterically funny. Despite being a show full of supernatural, mythical creatures, FX uses no CGI for this one. When there is tension or suspense, you’ll see no goofy digital renderings to break that classical feeling. They took a cue from Francis Ford Coppola, who directed “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” and focused on using camera angles and timing to create more realistic scares.
Along those same lines, the vampires in this show must be invited into any building, and they will die if they’re exposed to sunlight. Sorry, Team Edward, no glittery skin here! Also borrowed from Coppola’s film is the idea of these inner-city vampires being able to transform into animals. Lazlo transforms into a bat (although he has to yell out “Bat!” every time), and Nandor can transform into a dog. “What We Do in the Shadows” also features some unique, fresh takes on vampiric lore, and those takes get a lot of laughs.
For example, Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch, “The Office”) is what’s known as an energy vampire. He’s so boring and frustrating that he sucks the life out of humans and vampires alike.
All through the end of last season, we followed this team of su-
pernatural misfits as they set out to take over Staten Island. Yeah, it didn’t pan out.
They remained under the tyrannical thumb of the Baron (Doug Jones, “Pan’s Labyrinth,” 2006) until he was accidentally killed by sunlight when Guillermo left the front door
open. It seems Guillermo is often saving the lives of his vampire overlords, which is interesting since the final episode of Season 1 revealed that he is a descendant of the great vampire hunter Van Helsing. We’re left wondering if Season 2 will find him accepting his fate and hunting
down the creatures he so dutifully serves.
If you’re in the mood for a little light-hearted horror, be sure to check out the next episode of this hilarious spinoff. Season 2 of “What We Do in the Shadows” premieres Wednesday, April 15, on FX.
