The Substance
On her 50th birthday, Elisabeth Sparkle (Moore), a successful film star who is now fading in popularity due to her age, is fired from her long-running aerobics show by the producer, Harvey (Quaid). Distraught, Elisabeth crashes her car when she is distracted by the removal of one of her billboards. At the hospital, one of the nurses
slips her a flash drive advertising a black market serum called “The Substance,” which promises to transform the user into a perfect, younger version of themselves. Desperate, Elisabeth orders The Substance, which generates a younger version of herself, Sue (Qualley), in a separate body. The two versions of Elisabeth must switch consciousness every seven days, and Sue must be sustained with stabilizer fluid extracted from the original body. Initially, Elisabeth enjoys reliving her youth and success through Sue but is soon faced with the consequences of Sue’s independent actions.
