WWII drama highlights the power of ordinary people
By Joshua Amy TV MediaEvery day, we pass by a multitude of strangers going about lives that are mostly invisible to us. These ordinary people deal with all of the things that the rest of us also do. But, when the stakes are high, ordinary people can be capable of extraordinary things. Even in the face of a world gone mad, the power of the human spirit endures. On Sunday, April 5, take a look inside the private lives of people challenged to overcome extraordinary circumstances in the premiere of “World on Fire” on PBS. In terms of perilous times, few points in history can hold a candle to the political tensions of Europe in 1939. “World on Fire,” the latest offering from the PBS Masterpiece collection, is set during this foreboding climate of uncertainty and the days leading up to the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, Poland. The series unfolds through the perspective of everyday people whose fates are intertwined in this world on the brink of war. It gives audiences a look at the remarkable things that ordinary people are capable of, even in the face of humanity’s worst impulses.
Over the course of the series, viewers can expect to see both the overwhelming hardships of World War II and the resounding triumphs of those who overcame such challenges. “World on Fire” features a sweeping narrative that covers a lot of ground, specifically the first year of the war. Its ensemble cast brings a host of vibrant characters to life, diverse characters living in Poland, Germany, France and Britain during one of the most disruptive times in human history.

but waiting for him there is a life that he’s kept hidden from her. Kasia is a dynamic character willing to take up arms and join the Polish resistance fighters to mount an offensive against the invading Nazi regime. Returning to Manchester, Harry is reunited with his girlfriend, Lois Bennett (Julia Brown, “Shetland”), a young factory worker who moonlights as a singer. With the rumblings of war growing closer to home, Lois’s family cannot avoid the implications it has for them. Her father, Douglas Bennett (Sean Bean,

report the advancing German war effort. However, she is caught in a struggle against the censorship of an authoritarian regime. Across the continent, Nancy’s nephew, living in Paris, is unnerved by the encroaching armies of the Reich. Webster O’Connor (Brian J. Smith, “Treadstone”) is a doctor facing persecution by far-right French nationalists for his relationship with jazz musician Albert Fallou (Parker Sawyers, “Southside with You,” 2016). As the entire world is thrown into conflict, “World on Fire” masterfully weaves all of these characters’ fates into a grand tapestry that encompasses much of the human experience during World War II. For anyone interested in history, or fans of action-packed period dramas, this series is certainly a must-watch.
Originally aired on BBC One in the U.K. last fall, the action-packed drama garnered both critical and audience acclaim. The series’ premiere was released to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the invasion of Poland, which happened in September 1939. Although the particulars of “World on Fire’s” story are fictional, the series is a bold attempt to accurately portray the historical climate of the war and its effect on

Nothing feels better than getting a good deal. Like, I’m sure cocaine is fine or whatever, but if it was on sale for buy one get one half off, I’d feel so high I wouldn’t even need to do the cocaine.

Last night, President Trump addressed the nation from the Oval Office. It was a nice change from his usual speeches right next to a helicopter. This is only the second time Trump has addressed the country from the Oval Office; the first was during the great McRib shortage of 2018.
Of course, the airline industry is also in trouble. But I read that some young people are taking advantage of cheap flights and booking trips. [In] one article, a girl actually said, “If I die, I die.” Meanwhile, that’s also the slogan for Spirit Airlines.

WHAT’S NEW ON CBS ALL ACCESS
“The Good Fight” Season 4
Christine Baranski (“Mamma Mia!
Here We Go Again,” 2018) is back as Diane Lockhart in Season 4 of this popular spinoff premiering Thursday, April 9, on CBS All Access. While Rose Leslie (“Game of Thrones”) won’t be returning as Maia this season, the loss is balanced by the addition of “The Good Wife’s” Zach Grenier, not to mention the return of guest star Michael J. Fox (“Spin City”) to the role of Louis Canning, which earned him five Emmy nominations. Delroy Lindo (“Blood & Oil”) and Cush Jumbo (“Vera”) also star in the drama. After seeing their founder besmirched and loosing their biggest client, Chumhum, in Season 3, the entire team at Reddick Boseman and Lockhart is in uncharted territory. Given these difficult circumstances, they have been forced to accept an offer from STR Laurie, a massive multinational law firm. How will the team adapt to the drastic changes that come with becoming a subsidiary? Find out when Season 4 of “The Good Fight” premieres this Thursday, and watch new episode every week.
WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX “Brews Brothers”
On Friday, April 10, this new comedy from “That ‘70s Show” creator Greg Schaffer premieres on Netflix. Coincidentally, Schaffer partners with his brother, Jeff Schaffer (“The League”), for this series, which focuses on two brothers who become partners when they end up running a brewery together. Mike Castle (“Clipped”) and Alan Aisenberg (“Orange Is the New Black”) star as Adam and Wilhelm Rodman, who are both geniuses when it comes to beer, but their methods and personalities couldn’t be more different. While Adam is laid back and not afraid to get his hands dirty, Wilhelm is all about precision and professionalism. The two clearly want to cater to drastically differ-
ent demographics: Adam to the “everyman” and Wilhelm to the elite (early photos show Wilhelm giving a presentation that includes “Chapter Three: Your awful taste is not your fault”). Joining the boys are co-workers Sarah (newcomer Carmen Flood) and Chuy (Marques Ray, “Dr. Ken”). Can the brothers put aside their differences long enough to create great beer and get the business off the ground? Find out when “Brews Brothers” premieres this Friday.
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU “Parasite” (2019)
On Wednesday, April 8, join the Kim family as they struggle the make ends meet while living in a cramped basement apartment in this Academy Award-winning film. When Ki-woo’s friend Min-Hyuk (Seo-joon Park, “Fight for My Way”) gives the family a scholars rock as a gift, their luck begins to change. They soon find themselves involved in a business scheme that could turn their lives around.

It’s a fine line between best friends and worst enemies for housewives Gizelle Bryant, Ashley Darby, Robyn Dixon, Karen Huger, Monique Samuels and Candiace Dillard. Season 4 features the return of Katie Rost from Season 1, a trip to the Big Easy with big drama, pregnancy problems and tumultuous mother-daughter relationships. “Sex and the City”
Relive the hilarious antics of Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker, “Divorce”), Samantha (Kim Cattrall, “Tell Me a Story”), Charlotte (Kristin Davis, “Bad Teacher”) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon, “Stray Dolls,” 2019) with all six seasons of this award-winning comedy series available now on Prime. Based on the novel of the same name by Candace Bushnell, the series follows Carrie Bradshaw, a thirty-something-year-old columnist trying to navigate the ups and downs of life in New York City with her friends. While each of the women are very different — Carrie is the fun-loving party girl, Miranda’s a determined lawyer, Charlotte the optimist and perfectionist, and Samantha the sexually confident business woman — they come together to help each other through difficult times. Whether they are facing Miranda’s rocky relationship with Steve (David Eigenberg, “Chicago Fire”) and his health problems, Samantha’s commitment issues, Charlotte’s hopelessly romantic outlook or Carrie’s on-again, off-again relationship with Mr. Big (Chris Noth, “The Good Wife”), everything is manageable when discussed together over Cosmos. Despite a strong focus on romantic relationships, this series truly shows the importance of good friends. Pour yourself a Cosmo, call up your friends and start binging “Sex and the City” for the perfect girls night in.

Most Vegas prize fights are 12-round contests, with two boxers slugging it out in the ring inside a famous Las Vegas venue. That’s kind of the same idea behind Food Network’s “Vegas Chef Prizefight,” except you’ve got several chefs battling it out weekly (on our screens, anyway) inside the kitchens of some of the most famous restaurants on and off the Strip.
After starting out with eight elite cheftestants in the March 5 premiere, the field has been narrowed to just three remaining chefs. Who will be named the
head chef of the new $10-million restaurant at Flamingo Las Vegas? It all comes down to the final round, which airs as a 90-minute episode this Thursday, April 9.
In the past five weeks, we’ve watched host Anne Burrell toss out different challenges to the chefs, who have had to prove their chops by taking over a busy dinner service in high-profile food venues: BLT Steak at Bally’s, El Burro Borracho at Rio, Mr. Chow at Caesars Palace, Giada at The Cromwell, and finally, the Michelin-starred Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars Palace.
All of the eateries are owned by Caesars Entertainment (that’s
why regional president Eileen Moore is a recurring judge). But if you were one of the more than 42 million tourists who visited Vegas in 2019, chances are you ate in at least one of the many restaurants owned by or associated with a famous name in the food industry.
The 1991 opening of Wolfgang Puck’s Spago marked the beginning of the celebrity chef era in Vegas. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the trend still appeared to be going strong in 2020, with grand openings planned for new ventures ranging from Gordon Ramsay’s Asian “eating house”
(his sixth Vegas establishment) to Buddy Valastro’s cake vending machine. (Also noteworthy is a new hot pot place staffed by robots.)
Of course, all of that is in question now, including the planned May 1 opening of Bugsy & Meyer’s at the Flamingo. But its head chef has already been selected since “Vegas Chef Prizefight” wrapped filming more than a month ago. And you’ll find out who has won their job of a lifetime when you tune in to the April 9 finale.
