Morse returns to solve mysteries in ‘Endeavour’
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaTV sleuths have been staples of prime time for ages, and with good reason. They captivate viewers with tales of mystery, intrigue and drama, not to mention their fascinating personalities. Jack Webb’s nononsense Joe Friday solved crime in “Dragnet” in the 1950s, Peter Falk fumbled his way to justice as TV’s “Columbo” for decades in TV series and movies, and Kristen Bell recently returned to the airwaves as the spunky titular character in Hulu’s “Veronica Mars.” If TV crime solvers have something in common, it’s that they’re unique. To the delight of fans,

As with all the previous “Endeavour” episodes, each of the three Season 7 installments was written by the show’s creator, Russell Lewis (“The Ambassador”). In an official ITV release about Season 7, “Endeavour”
According to its star, the new season’s episodes take their cues from modern-day issues. In a February article with RadioTimes.com, Evans talked about the timeliness of this season’s topics, which include sexual harassment and immigration.
“I don’t want to say it’s a com ment, but I think these stories work best when there is a reflection of what’s going on now,” Evans said.
The storylines are new, but there will be some familiar faces returning for Season 7. Anton Lesser (“Game of Thrones”) reprises his role as CS

WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX
“Cobra Kai” Seasons 1 and 2
It’s been more than 30 years since Ralph Macchio (“The Deuce”) and William Zabka (“How I Met Your Mother”) faced off in an epic showdown at the All-Valley Karate Championship as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence in “The Karate Kid” (1984). Now, both of them return to the dojo in the first two seasons of this series that proves grudges can truly last a lifetime, coming to Netflix on Friday, Aug. 28. No longer teenagers, Daniel and Johnny live drastically different lives — Daniel has found success running a car dealership while Johnny struggles as a handyman. When Johnny gets arrested for assault after saving a teenager named Miguel (Xolo Mariduena, “Parenthood”) from being severely beaten by a group of bullies, and is promptly disowned by his family, he begins to spiral and lose sight of his purpose in life. The hits keep on coming as his car is then wrecked in a hitand-run, which leads to him running into Daniel. The reunion with his old nemesis gives Johnny an idea that could help him reestablish his purpose: reopen the Cobra
Kai dojo where he trained as a teen and take Miguel under his wing. Old rivalries are reignited as Miguel begins using his training to fight bullies at school, Johnny’s estranged son, Robby (Tanner Buchanan, “Designated Survivor”), begins karate training with Daniel and Daniel’s daughter, Samantha (Mary Mouser, “Body of Proof”), finds herself put in the middle as she becomes friends with Miguel.
“Trinkets” Season 2
All teens have their own way of rebelling, whether it’s via their clothing, their music or a significant other they just know won’t get their parents’ approval. In some cases, though, it can be a little more drastic, like say, kleptomania? In this Netflix original series, the second and final season of which premieres Tuesday, Aug. 25, three unlikely teens are brought together over their mutual tendency to employ the five-finger discount. Brianna Hildebrand (“Deadpool 2,” 2018) stars as Elodie Davis, who has just moved to Oregon after her widowed father remarried, giving her a new stepmother and stepbrother. When she is caught shoplifting, her father insists that she begin attending Shoplifters Anonymous meetings. There, she
meets Moe (Kiana Madeira, “Really Me”) and Tabitha (Quintessa Swindell, “Euphoria”), who go to her school. Despite their vast differences in personality — Tabitha comes from a wealthy family and is a typical popular girl while Moe is more of an outcast — the three girls form a fast friendship and support each other through the struggles that pushed them to act out in the first place. The Season 1 finale left fans on the edge of their seats as Tabitha reached a new level of rebellion by stealing a car and Elodie ran away from home after her dad threatened to send her to a treatment facility in Seattle. Catch the dramatic final season when it premieres this Tuesday on the streamer.
“Rising Phoenix”
On Wednesday, Aug. 26, in time with what should have been the 2020 Paralympic Games, comes the premiere of this inspiring documentary. In 1948 in England, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized the games in an effort to give hope and purpose to veterans of World War II who had been injured and left disabled. Over the years, more and more countries began to take part, creating what eventually became known as the Paralympic Movement. “Rising Phoenix” takes an in-depth look at these origins as well, as it looks into the lives of numerous Paralympic athletes, including Bebe Vio, Ellie Cole, Tatyana McFadden and more. Now the third-biggest sporting event worldwide, the Paralympic Games and the movement it created have drastically altered the world’s perception of
living with a disability and reaching your potential against all odds.
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU “Blindspot” Season 5
On Sunday, Aug. 23, binge the fifth and final season of this action-packed crime drama when it debuts on Hulu. In Season 1, Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander, “Thor: The Dark World,” 2013) awoke in the middle of Times Square stark naked and covered in tattoos with no idea who she was or how she came to be there. When the FBI realized that her mysterious tattoos are actually various keys and codes, they assigned Agent Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton, “Strike Back”) to be Jane’s handler. Despite her lack of memory, Jane’s past began to shine through as she displayed remarkable skill in linguistics and combat, suggesting a military background. The series has taken many twists and turns, keeping fans on the edge of their seats as Jane worked with Weller and a team of agents to uncover her identity and unravel what seems to be a global conspiracy. In the gripping Season 4 finale, we were introduced to Madeline Burke (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, “Limitless”), a rogue FBI agent out to bring down the agency. Now, Jane and Weller must protect their team and stop Burke before it’s too late as the series comes to a close in this gripping final season.

man coping with the tragic effects of dementia in this drama coming to Hulu on Monday, Aug. 24. As his daughter, Molly (Elle Fanning, “All the Bright Places,” 2020), takes him around New York City to his various appointments, she struggles to deal with his condition and come to terms with the fact that her father isn’t quite there anymore. Meanwhile, in his mind, Leo lives out the two possible lives he could have lived if he had made different choices — one in Mexico with his ex-wife Dolores (Salma Hayek, “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” 2017), and one as a writer in Greece. Academy Award nominee Laura Linney (“Ozark”) also stars in this heartwrenching film.
Return to Wonderland in this imaginative sequel coming to Disney+ on Friday, Aug. 28. It’s been three years since Alice (Mia Wasikowska, “Blackbird,” 2019) returned home from the magical realm of Wonderland, and in that time, she has made a name for herself following in her father’s footsteps as an explorer, even traveling to China. But when she gets home from her latest trip overseas, she discovers that her ex-fiancé, Hamish (Leo Bill, “Hamlet,” 2015), is trying to take advantage of her mother’s poor financial situation. Not prepared to handle what her life has dealt her, she follows a butterfly she recognizes as Absolem (voiced by Alan Rickman, “Love Actually,” 2003) through a mirror and back into Wonderland. There, she is reunited with many of her old friends, including the White Queen (Anne Hathaway, “Ocean’s 8,” 2018), the Cheshire Cat (voiced by Stephen Fry, “Wilde,” 1997) and, of course, the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp, “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” 2018). Unfortunately, Hatter hasn’t been himself lately, as he was recently reminded of his family, who died years earlier from a Jabberwocky attack, and has become convinced that they’re still alive. Now, Alice must find Time (Sacha Baron Cohen, “The Spy”) himself and use the Chronosphere to go back in time and stop Hatter’s family from being killed. But as Alice goes back in time, she is also pursued by Time, who insists that the past can not be changed.
Working from home CBS takes ‘The Talk’ online
By Rachel Jones TV MediaThere’s no shortage of issues to tackle for the Emmy-winning talk show “The Talk,” and you can watch a new episode on Thursday, Aug. 27, on CBS. Whether it’s current events, celebrity interviews or pop culture, everything’s up for grabs for the witty ensemble of women who host the show — these days, that includes Sharon Osbourne (“Austin Powers in Goldmember,” 2002), Sheryl Underwood (“Bulworth,” 1998), Eve (“Barbershop,” 2002), Carrie Ann Inaba (“What’s Up Orange County”), and the newest recruit, Marie Osmond (“Donny and Marie”).
Created by actress and founding host Sara Gilbert (whom you may know as Darlene in “Roseanne” and “The Conners”), the show debuted in October 2010, and though it began with a central theme of motherhood, it soon evolved to include a plethora of other topics. It is often compared to ABC’s “The View,” and it consists of segments that run for a total of about 25 minutes, depending on how many guests and topics are included for the episode.
The all-female panel discusses current news and issues with a focus on juicy or quirky stories. And they do it all in front of a live studio audience in California.
The 10th season of “The Talk” premiered Sept. 9, 2019, the first without Gilbert, whose place on the panel was filled by Osmond. Aside from the change in the host lineup, the set was also transformed with a more modern, cutting-edge design.
Early this year, when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, the show was supposed to go live without an audience, but it turned out even those measures wouldn’t be enough. The show was shut down temporarily as CBS decided on a more aggressive response to the health emergency. As a way to keep the top-rated show running, it was
rebranded as “The Talk@Home” and has been broadcasting the women’s discussions via Zoom so each can participate from the comfort of their own homes.
While it’s no longer broadcasting from the studio, the show’s format remains unchanged: each episode features intense and diverse discussions on trending topics, and the guests join in virtually. The show is expected to continue broadcasting this way for the foreseeable future.
Pre-pandemic, “The Talk” enjoyed an international audience, including viewers in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, South Africa, the Philippines, the Czech Republic, New Zealand and more. Today, it can be viewed from practically any place on the planet with an internet connection.
The program is also designed to accommodate viewers’ opinions through social media, specifically Twitter, using the hashtags #EverybodyTalks or #EVBT. By Season 5, “The Talk” began to allow video recordings and uploads with those hashtags and would feature one or two fan contributions during each episode.
In most installments of the show, the segment dubbed “Top Talker” features a detailed analysis of a trending topic by different contributors from the entertainment industry. Afterward, a celebrity guest is interviewed by the show’s roundtable. From time to time, they also feature singers or bands on the set. There’s also often a cooking segment with a guest chef, and every week they give away fashion or beauty products as well as electronics to each person in the audience. This season, the show’s original wrap-up line “Remember, it’s always the right time to have ‘The Talk’” was replaced with the phrase “Let’s talk tomorrow!”
In December 2009, CBS axed the soap opera “As the World Turns,” which had been airing since 1955.
When Gilbert learned about the network’s plan to find something to fill that daytime programming slot, she jumped at the opportunity to present her proposal to CBS. She pitched a talk show run by six women who would tackle the country’s most important headlines and stories from a mother’s point of view.
The debut episode of “The Talk” went straight to the No. 1 spot in its
time-slot in about 35% of its market. The show and its hosts have come a long, long way since then, earning 17 Emmy nominations. In 2016, all of the hosts of “The Talk” appeared in cameo roles in a “Supergirl” episode, and a year later, the panelists were featured in a “Jane the Virgin” episode, playing themselves.
The undeniable success of the show has given the team the free-
dom to stage a number of on-location editions, too. In its second season, the show broadcast live for a week on each of two trips to New York City, the first putting some of the audience in the studio and some outside. “The Talk” has since broadcast for a week from NYC twice per season.
Ten-time Emmy winner John Redmann (“The Tyra Banks Show”) is
the executive producer and showrunner, while other executive producers include Heather Gray (“The Tyra Banks Show”), Ed Horwitz (“I Get That A Lot”) and Kristin Matthews. For the latest round of conversations about engaging, informative and sometimes just plain fun topics, catch a new episode of “The Talk” when it airs Thursday, Aug. 27, on CBS.
