The 2010s decade has been a bloody entertaining one so far, that’s for certain. In the past few years, we’ve seen AMC’s juggernaut “The Walking Dead” dominate the zombie-apocalypse-survival genre and HBO’s “True Blood” sink its teeth into the vampire drama scene.

Enter FX’s “The Strain,” which blends the best of both catastrophes — undead vampires have taken over New York City, and in the midst of surviving, a select few are looking to cure the epidemic through medicine or flat-out eliminating the night walkers. With season 2 now underway, catch an allnew episode of “The Strain” airing Sunday, Aug. 30, on FX.

“The Strain” began as a horror novel trilogy created by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan and was originally imagined as a television series. After countless unsuccessful attempts to pitch it to networks, though, del Toro decided to adapt the idea into a series of books, and in 2011, graphic novel publisher Dark Horse Comics began “The Strain’s” transition into comic book form, with the series running for 32 issues.

It premiered on FX last summer, and the premise is pretty straightforward: a genetic disease takes hold of New Yorkers and turns them into vampires. Hundreds of thousands of citizens run amok crying for help, but no one outside NYC is willing to lend a hand.

As with most shows, the first season focused on introducing characters, including epidemiologist Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll, “House of Cards”), looking to save the world through medicine; Eph’s close ally, Dr. Nora Martinez (Mía Maestro, “Alias”); Holocaust survivor Prof. Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” 2001); and nail gun-wielding rat exterminator Vasiliy Fet (Kevin Durand, “Vikings”).

Mexican wrestler is fighting real vampires,” said del Toro, as reported by “Collider.” “It’s not tonguein-cheek. It’s not wink-wink. These are real monsters and a guy that used to be a wrestler but now works as a waiter in an Indian restaurant in New York. So it’s a really down-to-earth reality to the Mexican wrestler genre, and it’s a character I’ve been thinking about for ages.”

Del Toro isn’t the only one thinking about the characters. Due to the scheduling of season 1’s air date and the beginning of filming for season 2, many actors from the show were able to dissect their own characters’ performances, which gave them the opportunity to hyper-analyze and dig deeper for anything that would boost their performance.

“I was really grateful that I had that opportunity to sit back, as a spectator, and watch it. I did a ton of homework on trying to figure out who he is, and the books were very informative, but I had to fill in a lot of blanks too,” said Durand to “Collider.” “I just felt like I was really heavily armed with a lot of knowledge about who I thought

this guy is now. I felt like I knew him a lot more, going into the second season. I feel really settled in him.”

And by the looks of it, this sort of scheduling could happen for a few more years. Earlier this month, “The Strain” was renewed for a third season set to air next summer, and executive producer Carlton Cuse explained at the Television Critics Association press tour how he’s mapped out subsequent seasons.

“From the very beginning, we had really talked about the first book being the first season, the second book being the next two seasons and the third book the last two seasons,” he said. “We’ve stuck to that game plan.”

With a total of five seasons a possibility, viewers will have no shortage of the villainous vampires for years to come. Can’t wait for the next season? Pick up the book series! If that doesn’t suit your taste, try out the graphic novels — which, of course, are quite graphic. Catch an all-new episode of “The Strain” airing Sunday, Aug. 30, on FX.

I’vesaid it before, and I’ll say it again: kids have a way of making already great TV even better. That maxim applies to cooking shows, at least. There’s just something so darn charming about watching little tykes with fewer years under their belts than I have on my car whipping up a dish that would put some trained chefs to shame.

“Rachael Ray’s Kids Cook-Off” got underway last week, and the pint-sized fun continues Monday evening on Food Network.

Each episode finds the kids, ranging from 11 to 13 years of age,

throwing down against each other in culinary competitions thought up by the mind of Rachael Ray.

Ray presides, hosts and judges, and each week she’ll be joined by an all-star guest judge to help her decide who gets to stay in the competition — and who winds up chopped.

Speaking of getting chopped, Amanda Freitag, Alex Guarnaschelli and Marcus Samuelsson — all frequent “Chopped” judges — will each be taking a turn as a guest judge. Sunny Anderson, Scott Conant and Jeff Mauro, all members of Food Network’s stable of culinary stars, will also be joining Ray throughout the competition.

So just what kind of challenges are these kids being put through?

It’s nothing too sinister. In this week’s episode, airing Monday, Aug. 31, food critic and Internet sensation Daymon Patterson swings by the kitchen to preside while the kids put their own twists on classic fast food meals.

Of course, these aren’t just ordinary, random kids being tossed into a kitchen filled with sharp knives and hot oil, so there’s no need to worry. These guys and gals are probably more skilled with a skillet than most folks watching the show at

home, and the chances of one of them getting seriously injured are probably way less than on a show like “Worst Cooks in America.”

In the end, the winner of the competition earns himself or herself a pretty sweet prize. Not only is there a $20,000 culinary scholarship up for grabs, but the best junior chef also gets to star in an exclusive web series.

That scholarship could change a young boy’s or girl’s life, and the web series is pretty cool, too. “Rachael Ray’s Kids Cook-Off” airs Monday nights on Food Network.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Years after a nuclear holocaust wiped out most of civilization, Max (Hardy) is captured by the minions of tyrannical leader Immortan Joe (Keays-Byrne), and it looks like his days of freedom are over. As a universal blood donor, he’s too valuable to kill, so he’s kept as a prisoner. When the trusted Imperator Furiosa (Theron) is sent to lead a convoy to collect gasoline from a nearby settlement, Max is taken along to keep the sickly Nux (Hoult) alive with his blood. Shortly after their departure, though, Immortan Joe

discovers that Furiosa has smuggled out his five wives and intends to take them somewhere they’ll be safe and free from his tyranny. A high-stakes vehicle chase across the shattered desert wasteland ensues, with Max and Furiosa ultimately setting aside their distrust and differences to do everything in their power to keep ahead of Immortan Joe’s mad army, and to protect the young women in their care.
