ATTRACTIONS Pedestrian Tunnel A new multi-use pedestrian tunnel under Highway 6 was completed in fall of 2019 to connect the the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail between Portsmouth Mine Lake and Croft Mine Historical Park in Crosby. The $1 million project was led by the City of Crosby and provides a safer connection for trail users and Highway 6 motorists. The Cuyuna Lakes State Trail is 8 miles of paved trail within the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area from Crosby to Riverton. Abandoned by mining companies more than 35 years ago, the state recreation area contains six natural lakes, plus an additional 15 deep lakes that were former mine pits. Murals Through a grant from the Hallett Charitable Trusts, local volunteer group Projectrevive continued its mission to promote, beautify and unite the Cuyuna Lakes region during the second of three phases of the Cuyuna Meets the World through Murals project in July of 2019. The first two murals of phase one were completed in July 2018 in Ironton and featured the area’s mining (Cuyuna Lakes “Dig It”) and mountain biking (Cuyuna Lakes “Ride It) history. A new mural called Cuyuna Lakes “Explore it” painted by Jasper Andries is now displayed on the Historic Spalding Building in downtown Crosby to honor a significant event of the area’s past. In August 1957, Dr. David Simons was launched from a capsule at the Portsmouth Mine to an altitude of 110,000 feet. During his 44 hours inside the Man High II capsule, Dr. Simons collected information on altitude effects on the human body, which was later used by NASA. He was the first person to see the curvature of Earth from space.

Another new mural called Cuyuna Lakes, “Search it” was painted by Adam Turman. The mural is displayed on the Victual Creamworks building in downtown Crosby and depicts the area’s mining history (the pit lake) with current recreational activities including paddle boarding and scuba diving. The mural has an “I spy” theme, in which there are subtly hidden objects to find and identify.
