Musical mystery
Season 3 of ‘The Masked Singer’ premieres after Super Bowl LIV
By Breanna Henry TV MediaThere is an absolute smorgasbord of reality television to choose from these days, and performance competitions make up a large percentage of the most watched. It seems like we can’t get enough of shows like “American Idol,” “The Voice” and “America’s Got Talent,” but there’s one such series that sets itself apart from the rest.
Season 3 of “The Masked Sing er” premieres Sunday, Feb. 2, on Fox, right after Super Bowl LIV, and the new installment of this si multaneously strange and beauti ful series promises to be bigger and better than ever. Series host Nick Cannon (“Berserk” 2019) re turns along with the previous sea sons’ judges: actors Ken Jeong (“The Casagrandes”) and Jenny McCarthy (“Return of the Mac”) are back on the panel with musicians Robin Thicke and Nicole Scherzinger. This time around, there are 18 new masked mystery celebrities — more than any season so far.
Unlike most performance com petitions, “The Masked Singer” does not recruit previously un-
known talents to vie for a prize. In this reality series, it’s celebrities who face off against one another for fan votes, and each episode features spectacular musical performances. The catch is that the celebrities are wearing elaborate costumes that conceal their identi-
to be talk show host Ricki Lake, and last season’s Ice Cream and Thingamajig shocked audiences when they revealed themselves to be professional video gamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and NBA star Victor Oladipo, respectively. While some of the masked singers are recording artists by trade — such as

I’m not a fan of the New Year’s kiss, mostly because I usually spend New Year’s with my family, and I’m not trying to be Cersei Lannister.
Media (a reality television production company) CEO Craig Plestis became distracted, as we all so often are, by the TV while dining out in Thailand. Looking around, Plestis noticed that most of the guests had abandoned both their conversations and their meals in favor of watching the weird program airing on the television. It featured a “crazy kangaroo in a pleather outfit” dancing around on stage and singing. Entranced by what he had seen (and the other diners’ reactions to it), Plestis and his dining companions didn’t even finish their food before beginning to research the series.
He discovered that the program originated in South Korea in 2015 as “King of Mask Singer” (or the much more fun literal translation, “Mystery Music Show: Masked Singer’s King”). By the time Plestis saw it for the first time, the show had already become a franchise, expanding to China, Indonesia, Vietnam and, of course, Thailand.
As culture and values vary across the globe, so does the approach to television. Although American media dominates the airwaves in most of the Englishspeaking world, most people are able to spot shows that don’t originate in the U.S. for multiple reasons, perhaps without even knowing why. Even muted, shows that come from across the pond can be identified by many people, thanks to technological differences that cause film to relay and display differently on screen (you can research the American color encoding system NTSC vs. the British system PAL for more insight).
Those who are used to the ultraHD, high-contrast look of American films might describe the look of British shows like “Doctor Who” and “Coronation Street” as slightly hazy or dream-like. But sometimes it’s the content of a series that betrays its origins, as is the case with “The Masked Singer.” Take one look at the utterly glorious absurdity that is this show, and it evokes the same distinctly non-American feelings that other adaptations are known for — consider the dry humor of Britain’s “The Office,” the interests of the titular character in Venezuelan series “Jane the Virgin” and the over-thetop costuming and acting in Japan’s “Power Rangers.”
I don’t need to explain to anyone why, historically, the tradition of beauty pageants is problematic. Women’s looks were judged more than their accomplishments, and the only place with more creepy old men hanging around was Jeffrey Epstein’s private plane.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
According to a new poll, Republican’s top choices for president in 2024 include Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr. Meanwhile, Eric just got his tongue unstuck from a pole he licked at Christmas.
Tonight was the season premiere of “The Bachelor.” The new bachelor is Peter, and he’s actually a pilot for Delta. When he was sitting by the fire on a date, and the girl asked for a blanket, he was like, “That’ll be $9.”
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert
While the Middle East is getting all the headlines, there are also some smaller, quirky little headlines you may have missed. For instance, the president of the United States was impeached. Remember that?
Harry and Meghan are stepping down as senior members of the Royal Family! Do you have any idea what that means? Because I have no idea! There are senior levels of royal? I thought it just went like: King, Queen, Prince, Princess, Jack of Spades, boy wizard, Dukes of Hazard and then cartoon mouse that sews Cinderella’s dress.

Once there, they discover the house is filled with magical keys that have an unknown connection to their father’s death. As they explore the magic of the different keys, a vicious demon is released that wants the power of the keys for itself. “Timmy
Failure: Mistakes Were Made”
If you enjoy the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” books and movies, you won’t want to miss the new film “Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made,” which was inspired by the series, when it comes to Disney Plus on Friday, Feb. 7. The show is based on the series of novels of the same name by Stephan Pastis, and follows Timmy Failure (Winslow Fegley, “Fast Layne”), an 11-year-old boy living in the shadow of the water tower in Portland, Oregon, with his mother, Patty (Ophelia Lovibond, “Elemen-
From Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day — the creators of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” — comes this new workplace comedy set to premiere Friday, Feb. 7, on Apple TV Plus. McElhenney also stars in the series, which follows a group of video game developers as they handle the day-to-day of managing a popular video game. The cast is rounded out by David Hornsby (“Good Girls”), Jessie Ennis (“Better Call Saul”), Charlotte Nicdao (“The Strange Chores”), Danny Pudi (“Community”), Ashly Burch (“Attack on Titan”), Imani Hakim (“Everybody Hates Chris”) and Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham (“Homeland”).
On Thursday, Feb. 6, follow a 30year investigation in this new true crime series that lets viewers take the reins. Based on the real-life case of a man who was charged with the vicious murder of his mother, showrunners used the real case files to create nine episodes, each focusing on different interrogations that took place throughout the investigation, and Peter Sarsgaard (“The Looming Tower”) stars as the lead detective. With the first nine episodes being released all at once, the series is intended to be watched in no particular order, creating the feel of an actual investigation and putting viewers in the position of detective by choosing which interrogation to watch next. Choose your own adventure as you follow this thrilling case with the dramatic finale premiering at a later date.
BINGE ON PRIME VIDEO “Grimm”
In this supernatural drama, available in full on Prime, Det. Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli, “A Million Little Things”) lives an average life in Portland, Oregon, with his girlfriend, Juliette (Elizabeth Tulloch, “Supergirl”). There are many extremely popular New York City-based sitcoms, but few were as groudbreaking and beloved as the critically acclaimed series “Will & Grace.” The series focuses on the two eponymous characters: Grace Adler (Debra Messing, “Smash”) is a neurotic and emotional interior designer, who is balanced out perfectly by her gay best friend and roommate, Will Truman (Eric McCormack, “Travelers”), a levelheaded lawyer. The two are joined by their friends Karen Walker (Megan Mullally, “Childrens Hospital”), Grace’s rich, alcoholic assistant, and Jack McFarland (Sean Hayes, “Sean Saves the World”), a flamboyantly gay actor, as they face the ups and downs of life, from various romantic relationships to dealing with work, family, friends and stereotypes. This hilarious series is known for having shone a positive light on the LGBT community in the early aughts and for using comedy to touch on difficult, topical themes. Eleven years after its 2006 finale, the cast reunited to urge the American public to vote, and that video resulted in the series being picked up for a four-season reboot. All eight original seasons of “Will & Grace” are available to binge now.

Be prepared: ‘Girl Scout Cookie Championship’ debuts this week
By Michelle Rose TV MediaAre you craving Thin Mints? Or maybe a Toffee-tastic? Hold on tight to that “no sweets” New Year’s resolution because Girl Scout cookie season starts soon, if it isn’t already underway in your community (the season varies by location). And be sure to mark your calendars for the premiere of Food Network’s newest competition show, “Girl Scout Cookie Championship.”
The brand new series launches Monday, Feb. 3, and it might be the ultimate tribute to your favorite seasonal treat leading up to National
Girl Scout Cookie Weekend (Feb. 28).
The four-episode series challenges professional bakers to transform Girl Scout cookies into over-the-top creations that will wow anyone with a sweet tooth and an eye for edible art.
A Girl Scout alumna, “How I Met Your Mother” star Alyson Hannigan serves as the upbeat host of this competition. Nacho Aguirre and Katie Lee are two of the three judges, and they’ll be joined by “a rotating third panel member, including Carla Hall,” per Food Network (Lee and Hall are also former Girl Scouts).
The series format doesn’t deviate from the tried-and-true Food Net-
work formula that has worked so well for most of its seasonal competitions, such as “Halloween Baking Challenge,” which also featured Lee and Hall as judges. But we all know the cookies are the true stars here. And it’ll take a lot of them to create some of the mmm-masterpieces that will be featured on the show.
The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest female-centered, femaleled entrepreneurial program in the world. It’s been going strong since the first cookie sale in 1917 and became a national event in 1936.
According to Fortune, about 200 million boxes of cookies are sold annually from February to April, and the estimated profit of $800 million provides critical funding for financing local troop activities nationwide.
So when you’re feeling guilty about eating half a box of Girl Scout cookies without sharing (been there, done that, will do again), there’s the consolation that your sweet tooth is at least doing some good at a community level (your dentist might not see it the same way).
Ever notice some cookies go by different names? It depends on which of the two licensed bakeries provides the cookies, and that’s why the same cookie might go by the name Caramel deLites or Samoas; Peanut Butter Patties or Tagalongs, Do-si-dos or Peanut Butter Sandwiches; and Shortbread or Trefoils. And that’s something to watch for when tuning in to “Girl Scout Cookie Championship,” which begins Feb. 3 on Food Network.

Role reversal Son parents parents in new NBC series ‘Indebted’
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaThere’s nothing like a good comeback story, and one new comedy has TV fans buzzing about the return of a couple of prime-time veterans. In the 1990s, Fran Drescher starred in the CBS sitcom “The Nanny,” while Steven Weber kept audiences laughing in the NBC hit “Wings,” and they’re about to team up in a new series for NBC.
Drescher and Weber star as couple Linda and Stew, parents who show up on their grown son’s doorstep in need of a place to stay, in the premiere of “Indebted,” airing Thursday, Feb. 6, on NBC. Their son, Dave (Adam Pally, “The Mindy Project”), and his wife, Rebecca (Abby Elliott, “Saturday Night Live”), have just made it through the diaper-andsleepless-night phase of parenting, so imagine their surprise when Linda and Stew become their dependents after they reveal that they’ve squandered their wealth and are now bankrupt. Dave has no choice but to take in the parents who provided for him.
What follows is a story of role reversal in which the lines between parent and child are blurred as Linda and Stew push the boundaries of maturity, and Drescher seems to be having fun with it. In an interview with Fab TV posted on its YouTube channel in September, the actress talked about why she thinks TV audiences will enjoy the show.
“Well, I think it’s a lighthearted, really fun family show. It’s multigenerational and it’s representational, too. It’s diverse,” Drescher said. “It’s fun to see the parents be the immature adolescent type and the son to be the more parental type and laying down the ground rules and trying to get us to stop being such spendthrifts.”
She knows a thing or two about what TV audiences like. After appearing on the big screen in such movies as “Saturday Night Fever” (1977), “American Hot Wax” (1978), “This Is Spinal Tap” (1984) and “UHF” (1989), Drescher and her husband at the time, Peter Marc Jacobson (“Happily Divorced”), created the sitcom “The Nanny,” which aired on CBS from 1993 to 1999, making the actress a
household name. She played Fran Fine, nanny to the children of Broadway producer Max Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy, “Days of Our Lives”). While the first season of “The Nanny” struggled in the ratings, it went on to be a rousing success, earning dozens of award nominations. After “The Nanny” wrapped, Drescher went on to appear in other television projects, notably “Happily Divorced,” also co-created with her then-ex Jacobson. It was based on their real-life experiences.
Drescher’s new onscreen husband in “Indebted” has plenty of experience in prime time as well. Weber, whose mother’s name, incidentally, is Fran, believe it or not, starred as Brian Hackett in the hit ‘90s series “Wings.” In fact, Weber and Drescher were briefly in direct competition in 1996 when “Wings” aired during NBC’s Wednesday night lineup at 8 p.m. ET opposite “The Nanny” on CBS at the same time. Airing from 1990 to 1997, “Wings” kept audiences laughing with its story of brothers who run a small airline on Nantucket Island. The show earned numerous industry accolades, including three Emmy nominations.
The younger stars of NBC’s new “Indebted” would do well to learn a thing or two from industry vets like Drescher and Weber. Pally has already made a name for himself in comedy circles, thanks to his work with New York’s improv and sketch comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade and the humor website Funny or Die, on which he’s featured in the series “Riding Shotgun With Adam Pally.” On television, he previously made waves in the ABC comedy “Happy Endings” and the Fox series “The Mindy Project.”
Elliott is an alumni of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles. She’s a former cast member of legendary sketch comedy TV show “Saturday Night Live,” appearing in 81 episodes between 2008 and 2012. The actress also co-starred in the Bravo comedy “Odd Mom Out” opposite author Jill Kargman.
NBC’s “Indebted” has champions behind the scenes as well. The show was created by Dan Levy, not to be confused with the Canadian
actor/creator/writer Dan Levy of “Schitt’s Creek” fame. “Indebted’s” Levy has appeared as a comedian at the Montreal Just for Laughs comedy festival and the New York Comedy Festival. He’s also appeared in “Comedy Central Presents,” “Late Night With Seth Mey-
ers” and “The Office.” Levy is a writer for the ABC comedy “The Goldbergs.”
Even with its talented crew in front of and behind the camera, “Indebted” will have its work cut out for it in the cutthroat primetime scene. Luckily, it has a great
lead-in as it premieres on the same night as fan favorite “Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s” season premiere, which airs earlier on NBC.
Drescher’s fans are likely anxious to catch her newest sitcom, and rumor has it that the star may have even more TV projects in the
works. In September, Entertainment Tonight broke the news in an exclusive scoop that she was in talks with Cardi B.’s people for a reboot of “The Nanny.” She also announced that a Broadway musical based on the series is in the works.
