The show must go on The Oscars draw Hollywood’s best and brightest amid controversy

It’s a long, long night that seems to get longer every year, but awardsshow junkies care not a whit for that. On the contrary, millions are excited — or at the very least, willing — to settle in for the Super Bowl of awards season as the crème de la crème of the acting world swarm into Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre to honor the best films of 2015. Amidst controversy, cries for boycotting and some significant changes on the horizon, the 88th Annual Academy Awards airs Sunday, Feb. 28, on ABC. In 1940, at the 12th Academy Awards, Hattie McDaniel won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her iconic performance as Mammy in Best Picture recipient “Gone With the Wind” (1939). This marked the first time a black actor or actress received the award.

Including McDaniel, only 14 black actors have won acting Oscars in the ceremony’s 88-year history. There’s no chance of that number going up this year, either, since, like last year, all 20 actors in the lead and supporting acting categories are white. You can’t talk about this year’s Academy Awards without addressing the controversy — and the trending Twitter hashtag #OscarSoWhite — that this lack of diversity has sparked. Indeed, it’s fast becoming a major focus of the Oscars during the lead-up to the ceremony. Adding fuel to the fire are the announcements from numerous stars decrying the “whiteout,” with some declaring their intent to boycott the awards all together.

“Malcolm X” (1992) writer and honorary recipient Spike Lee wrote on Instagram that he and his wife “cannot support” the Oscars and therefore would not be attending, while Will Smith (“Men in Black,” 1997) and wife Jada Pinkett Smith (“Collateral,” 2004) both separately announced their intention to boycott the event.

Hosting the Oscars for the second time is audacious comedian Chris Rock (“Grown Ups,” 2010), whose comedy is generally peppered with race-related material. Rock was invited to host long before the nominations spawned outrage, and while some have called for him to step

down in support of the boycott, Rock is taking a different tack. Oscars producer Reginald Hudlin revealed to “Entertainment Tonight” that the comedian’s original completed monolog has been scrapped, and the rewritten material is sure to include some digs directly related to the controversy.

“As things got a little provocative and excited, he said: ‘I’m throwing out the show I wrote and I’m writing a new show,’” Hudlin said.

“Chris is that thorough. He’s that brilliant, and I have 1,000 percent confidence that he will deliver something that people will be talking about for weeks.”

Rock’s longtime collaborator Ali LeRoi confirms that a comedian like Rock is the best possible choice to host amidst the negative feelings surrounding the ceremony.

“If this was [last year’s host] Neil

Patrick Harris, it would be two minutes of ‘Oscars-are-so-white jokes,” he said in an NPR interview.

“But everyone’s going: ‘Oh my god, it’s Chris Rock. What’s he gonna do?’”

Of course, there are just as many in the acting community —

academy’s membership, which is notoriously old, white and male.

A week after the nominations, the governing board unanimously voted to double female and minority members by 2020, allowing for better representation among those voting in the nominees. Furthermore, the pre-

nominated for an Oscar, lifelong voting rights are instated.

Controversy or not, the movies and performers gunning to take home the little golden man aren’t to be denied their moment in the sun. Leading the pack is “The Revenant,” whose 12 nominations include Best Director for Alejandro González Iñárritu, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and the granddaddy of all Oscars, Best Picture. Close behind is “Mad Max: Fury Road” with 10 nominations, and the Matt Damonstarring “The Martian” with seven, both of which jostle with “The Revenant” in the Best Picture cate-

Predictions are varied, though “The Big Short,” “Room” and “Spotlight” are among the Best Picture hopefuls, and with Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”) and Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”) joining Damon and DiCaprio in the Best Actor category, it’s anybody’s game.

Oscar darlings Cate

Blanchett (“Carol”) and Jennifer Lawrence (“Joy”) have their work cut out for them as Best Actress contenders as they go up against Brie Larson for her performance in “Room,” which has already earned the actress a Golden Globe, a Critics’ Choice Movie Award and a SAG Award. While naysayers may pooh-pooh the lack of diversity among the nominees, they can’t complain about the list of presenters. Kevin Hart (“Get Hard,” 2015), Benicio del Toro (“Snatch,” 2000), Kerry Washington (“Scandal”) and Priyanka Chopra (“Quantico”) are among those slated to dole out the awards, and the list of presenters and performers also includes “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg, Pharrell Williams and The Weeknd.

While many will be avoiding the broadcast all together, it sounds like the controversy surrounding this year’s Oscars ceremony might in fact make it one particularly worth tuning in for. See it all unfold when the 88th Annual Academy Awards airs Sunday, Feb. 28, on ABC.

Whenit comes to celebrity chefs, there aren’t many as recognizable as Emeril Lagasse. Like Gordon Ramsay — lots of folks who have never seen an episode of “MasterChef” or tuned in for an evening marathon of “Kitchen Nightmares” definitely know who Ramsay is — Emeril is a familiar face and name for many, whether they frequent cooking shows or not.

It was the southern chef’s signature catchphrase — “Bam!” — that endeared him with audiences in “Essence of Emeril” and “Emeril Live,” but even with those

the

shows long over, it’s easier than ever to find the chef on TV these days.

“Emeril’s Florida” is currently airing Sundays on Cooking Channel, and it’s no surprise that the chef’s sunny personality is a perfect match for the Sunshine State. Over the course of each season, he travels around the state visiting restaurants, resorts and festivals with one thing on his mind: food.

Of course, a chef is a chef, and Emeril can’t resist sharing some of his own favorite recipes with those of us watching at home. Not surprisingly, his dishes often feature bounteous seafood that comes in fresh every day.

The next episode, airing Sunday, Feb. 28, is a perfect example of this. Emeril decides to stop by three of Florida’s best resorts. He’s not there for fun in the sun, though. He’s there for the food. His first stop is a familiar one for him. At Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal, he swings into Tchoup Chop, an acclaimed restaurant that is familiar territory for the chef. After all, Emeril owns it!

After two more stops — Scarpetta in the Fontainebleau Hotel on Miami Beach and Kuro at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino — Emeril heads back to his own kitch-

en, where he works with some of that fresh seafood that he loves so much. On the menu this time is a slow-roasted salmon served with a garlic potato purée.

Emeril first shot to fame with his own take on New Orleans cooking, a style that he calls “New New Orleans,” but Florida’s now the state that he calls home. He’s certainly embraced his adopted state, and it’s TV watchers at home who get to reap the benefits. A new episode of “Emeril’s Florida” airs Sunday, Feb. 28, on Cooking Channel.

Creed Sylvester Stallone returns to the role that made him famous in this spinoff of the Rocky franchise. Retired boxer Rocky Balboa (Stallone) has put his fighting life behind him and now owns a restaurant in Philadelphia. But when Adonis “Donnie” Johnson (Jordan), the son of his old rival, pays him a visit, he allows himself to be drawn back into the boxing world to train the young man. Along with several of his old boxing buddies, Rocky starts teaching his young protégé everything

he knows about fighting in the ring. After Donnie defeats a well-known local fighter, word begins to spread about his skill and his legendary trainer. Soon enough, he’s contacted by “Pretty” Ricky Conlan (Bellew), the light heavyweight champion, who’s on the brink of retirement and wants to make Donnie his last fight.
