It’s not a stretch to think that some day we could be living side by side with lifelike robots that are practically indiscernible from people. At the rate technology is advancing (and at the rate we’re consuming it), the idea of humanoid robotic assistants doesn’t seem as far-fetched as it did even 30 years ago.
AMC is looking to tap into this idea with its new British-American sci-fi series entitled “Humans.”
The drama takes place in a parallel present where highly developed robotic servants called Synths are the new must-have gadget for busy families. The show premiered last week, and a new episode of “Humans” airs Sunday, July 5, on AMC.
The Synths in “Humans” aren’t just any ordinary robots. These eerie, intelligent machines not only cook and clean for their owners, they are also capable of making dinner reservations, checking a person into a hotel or conversing in four different languages. They look and act like people, mimicking human behavior, but all the while lacking the ability to feel.
This is where the drama gets creepy. If these robots are capable of doing all of the same things as humans, do we become redundant? Do our fears and insecurities make us lesser beings? What kind of effect does incorporating these robots have on our emotional well-being? How will this change everyday life? These are the questions AMC hopes to explore with “Humans.”
“[It’s] a series that is both incredibly entertaining and engaging on a character level, and a very timely exploration of the kind of impact the A.I. technology being developed today might have on our everyday lives,” AMC’s executive vice-president of programming, production and digital content, Joel Stillerman, said in a news release. “You don’t have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy this story. As the title implies, it’s very much about the human side of the topic.”
Of course, the Synths in “Humans” won’t actually be played by
so every movement has to have an constantly bumping into things, so
reconnect after their home life fell into chaos.
Elsewhere, a widower named George Millican (William Hurt, “Into the Wild,” 2007) has developed a deep, familial bond with his antiquated Synth named Odi (Will Tudor, “Game of Thrones”), which has started to malfunction, following the death of his wife. After forcefully being upgraded to a newer model, Vera (Rebecca Front, “Lewis”), George struggles to keep his feelings about Odi under wraps, lest he surrender the older model to the authorities.
Neil Maskell (“Utopia”) also stars in “Humans” as Special Technologies Task Force D.S. Peter Drummond, who is frustrated by the attention his wife gives her seemingly perfect (male) Synth physical therapist. Pushing papers all day to escape from the anger, he soon discovers a case involving a Synth that should assuredly be impossible.
Lastly, Leo (Colin Morgan, “Merlin”) and his Synth, Max (Ivanno Jeremiah, “The Jury”), are on the hunt for a person from his past, but all the while, the hunters are also the hunted as a mysteri-
ous man named Hobb (Danny Webb, “Valkyrie,” 2008) is hot on their heels, looking to expose what could be a humanity-destroying secret.
It may seem like a lot going on at once, but if the numbers out of the U.K. are any example, “Humans” may actually have what it takes to be a popular series. The show premiered on Channel 4 last month to four million viewers and an 18.3 per cent share, making it the station’s biggest original drama premiere ever. (By comparison, nearly two million people, a 6.9 percent share, tuned in to the “Game of Thrones” season 5 finale in June on Sky Atlantic.)
Technology is advancing at such a rapid rate, and while we currently don’t have highly developed humanoid robot servants at our disposal, it’s not entirely far-fetched that it could happen in the very near future. AMC takes viewers on a “what-if” adventure with its new sci-fi drama “Humans” to see what could possibly happen if humanity does get to that point. Catch a new episode of “Humans” when it airs Sunday, July 5, on AMC.

Home cooks are all the rage these days, and I’m definitely on that bandwagon.
“MasterChef” is a cooking show juggernaut on Fox, ABC had “The Taste” (which never quite found its niche) and Food Network has “Worst Cooks in America” and “All-Star Academy.”
What’s not to love? I’m sure most home cooks have daydreamed about making it big with their unique recipes or fantasized about cooking side by side with a chef such as Cat Cora or Brian Malarkey.
Enter NBC’s “Food Fighters,” which premiered its second season last week and is currently airing Tuesday evenings. In a cooking show landscape that’s focused on home cooks learning from their professional idols, “Food Fighters” takes things in a different direction: here, it’s a throwdown of home cooks one on one vs. the pros, under the watchful gaze of host Adam Richman (“Man v. Food”). It sounds one-sided, doesn’t it? After all, what chance could a selftrained home cook have against a culinary professional with years of training and experience?
Luckily for the home cooks, the deck is definitely stacked in their
favor. Each episode of “Food Fighters” shines the spotlight on a single home cook who’s brought five of his or her best recipes to the showdown. The competition is played in five rounds, with the home cook cooking off against five pros one by one — and each time, the home cook gets to choose which dish will be fought over.
The strategy for the contestants, then, is to show up with five recipes that they know inside and out, but also of varying styles to try to target the weaknesses of the pros — all in the quest to cook the bet-
ter dish and inch closer to winning the top prize of $100,000.
It’s a competition that’s larger than life, but this season is shrinking things down a little bit, too. For the first time, kid home cooks are being added to the mix, and what could make a kid’s parents more proud than seeing their little boy or girl wipe the floor with one of the nation’s top chefs?
When it comes down to it, it’s all about the spirit of competition — OK, and maybe a little bit about the money. Season 2 of “Food Fighters” airs Tuesday nights on NBC.

Woman in Gold
The emotionally charged world of art restitution is revealed in this true story. Maria Altmann (Mirren) is an elderly woman living in Los Angeles who, decades earlier, had been forced to flee Vienna, Austria due to her Jewish heritage when the Nazis invaded. While looking through some old letters written by her late sister, she learns that her family had left behind some original pieces of artwork when they fled and that one of them is a painting of her aunt by Gustav Klimt. Determined to retrieve her property, she challenges the Aus-
trian government all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States to get it back — but the painting, called the Woman in Gold, is now considered an Austrian national treasure. With the Austrian government unwilling to part with the masterpiece, Maria embarks on the legal fight of her life to not only recover the stolen property, but also to recover a piece of her family’s heritage.
