ABC’s ‘Grand Hotel’ puts the sizzle in summer
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaWith its stunning hotels, sizzlinghot beaches and even hotter nightlife, Miami is a haven for people looking for a taste of the high life. Yet, life in Miami isn’t all fun in the sun, and a new series set in a posh hotel explores the dark side of the sunshine state.
Academy Award nominee Demián Bichir (“A Better Life,” 2011) stars as Santiago Mendoza, the owner of Miami Beach’s last family-run hotel, in “Grand Hotel,” airing Monday, July 22, on ABC. Inspired by the popular Spanish TV series “Gran Hotel,” the drama offers viewers a modern take on the classic upstairs-downstairs story as it follows the lives of the Mendozas and their wealthy guests, along with those of their loyal working-class staff. The original Spanish series was a period drama, but ABC has updated the American version of the show and set the action in multicultural Miami, an area brimming with Latin American culture.
While the gorgeous hotel provides a luxurious setting for the series, it was quickly revealed in the June 17 pilot that the Mendoza’s business was in trouble. The family has been
plagued by escalating debt and scandals, not to mention explosive secrets.
A welcome respite from a summer schedule laden with reality TV shows, “Grand Hotel” is a prime-time soap for today’s discerning TV fans, rife with a mysterious disappearance, an unexpected pregnancy and maybe even murder. Eva Longoria (“Desperate Housewives”) — who executive produces, directs and appears in the series — has promised that the new show will deliver plenty of summer time drama.
“’Grand Hotel’ is going to have a lot of twists and turns — big twists, big turns, big surprises — almost every episode,” Longoria said in an official ABC Q&A video.
“What will keep people coming back is falling in love with the journeys of each of these charac ters and really car ing about their arcs and where they’re going, and then also discovering who they were.
Some of them will have a past that catches up to them.”
Longoria guest stars as Beatriz Mendoza, Santiago’s first wife and the original owner of the hotel, who appears in a series of flashbacks. Her family had owned the Riviera Grand Hotel for generations, and the business was passed down to her husband after she died. According to official records, Beatriz died of a heart attack, but “Grand Hotel”

A new study found that drinking coffee can help burn fat. America was like, “Great! I’ll have TWO mocha frappuccinos with whipped cream and sprinkles.”
Alicia (Denyse Tontz, “The Fosters”), Beatriz and Santiago’s adult daughter, who recently returned to the hotel after graduating with an MBA from Cornell. Alicia’s brother, Javi (Bryan Craig, “General Hospital”), is the hotel’s resident playboy. In Gigi’s camp are her twin daughters: the self-obsessed Carolina (Feliz Ramirez, “Bull”) and the decidedly more awkward Yoli (Justina Adorno, “Seven Seconds”).
Hotel manager Mateo (Shalim Ortiz, “Heroes”) bridges the gap between the affluent “upstairs” characters and the staff members. While he serves as Santiago’s right-hand man, he also secretly works for the hotel’s creditors. Helen Parker (Wendy Raquel Robinson, “The Steve Harvey Show”), known as “Mrs. P” to her colleagues, is the hotel’s no-nonsense head of staff.
As for the “downstairs” crew, the dutiful hotel staff is portrayed by a diverse group of up-and-coming actors. Mrs. P’s son, Jason (Chris Warren, “High School Musical,” 2006), works at the hotel as a waiter. He befriends Riviera newbie Danny (Lincoln Younes, “Home and Away”). What Jason doesn’t know is that Danny has been secretly investigating the disappearance of his sister, Sky (Arielle Kebbel, “The Vampire Diaries”), one of the hotel’s line cooks who went missing after a heated run-in with Gigi. Meanwhile, pregnant hotel housekeeper Ingrid (Anne Winters, “13 Reasons Why”) lies about her unborn child’s paternity.
The show also boasts an impressive roster of recurring actors, including Jencarlos Canela (“Telenovela”) as rapper El Rey, Adrian Pasdar (“Heroes”) as Felix, Katey Sagal (“Sons of Anarchy) as Teresa, and Freddie Stroma (“Time After Time”) as Oliver.
In true prime-time soap opera style, “Grand Hotel” features plenty of romance, notably a forbidden dalliance between Danny and Alicia, which blossoms despite Mrs. P’s warnings to Danny that the hotel owner’s family members are off limits. Meanwhile, an affair between El Rey and another character causes friction in the Mendoza family, and a scandal threatens to derail an employee’s career.
Critical response to the series has been mixed so far. In a June review, Variety’s Caroline Framke called “Grand Hotel” an “easy, breezy summer watch.”
The very first Democratic debates are this week down in Miami. Most of the candidates are busy with debate prep, while Bernie Sanders spent the day on the beach with a metal detector.
I think I know why Trump’s upset. He’s probably jealous of the Democrats, if you think about it. They got to be on TV, they got to talk about themselves, and they got to be in Florida.
Tonight was the second Democratic debate — or as nine candidates called it, “Operation: Destroy Joe Biden.”
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert
While we’re in the middle of a humanitarian crisis on our border, in these detention facilities, this afternoon, we learned that Customs and Border Protection commissioner John Sanders is expected to step down. You know what they say: when the going gets tough, the tough go, “Good luck with that, sucks to be you.”

In California recently, a woman was arrested for shoplifting at a Target store after she went into one of their dressing rooms and drank an entire six-pack of the store’s beer. Without a doubt, this is the most K-Mart thing to happen in a Target.
A man in South Carolina was so dissatisfied with how his Mexican pizza was made at a Taco Bell that he stormed into the kitchen and made his own. He then took off, and is wanted by the police. Yeah, I hate when Taco Bell Mexican pizza doesn’t have that authentic Mexican pizza taste.
NEW ON NETFLIX: “Orange Is the New Black” Season 7
The seventh and final season of one of Netflix’s first and mostwatched original series drops Friday, July 29, and fans are eager to see how things will finally pan out for their favorite group of inmates. In last season’s finale, Piper (Taylor Schilling, “The Lucky One,” 2012) was granted early release, and this season sees her struggling to readjust to life on the outside. With far bigger problems on their plates, Taystee (Danielle Brooks, “Master of None”) has been convicted of a murder she didn’t commit, and Blanca (Laura Gómez, “Show Me a Hero”), thinking she was getting early release as well, was instead transported to an immigrant detention center (consider my guts wrenched). There are loads of other characters who deserve a satisfying conclusion to their stories, so the writers really had their work cut out for them this season. And take heart — there’s already talk floating around of a potential sequel somewhere down the line.
“Another
Life”
Sci-fi fans may recognize Katee Sackhoff, who played Starbuck in “Battlestar Galactica,” as the star of this new space-set drama starting Thursday, July 25. The series follows a space crew, led by astronaut Niko Breckinridge (Sackhoff), on a mission to locate the source of an enormous alien artifact that mysteriously appeared on Earth. Things go south for the team as they search for the alien species responsible in the hopes of making contact, and the dangers and horrors they face could mean that some — or all — of the crew never make it home. Selma Blair (“Anger Management”), Tyler Hoechlin (“Road to Perdition,” 2002), Justin Chatwin (“Shameless”), Jessica Camacho (“Taken”) and Samuel Anderson (“Emmerdale”) join
“Workin’ Moms” Season 2
The second season of this Canadian sitcom is available to stream Thursday, July 25. It follows a group of young moms as they venture back into the workplace after maternity leave and juggle the many challenges that go hand in hand with being a working mother. In Season 2, Kate (Catherine Reitman, “Black-ish”), Frankie (Juno Rinaldi, “5ive Days to Midnight”), Anne (Dani Kind, “Wynonna Earp”) and Jenny (Jessalyn Wanlim, “Orphan Black”) contend with the daily struggle of parenting toddlers while holding down a job, maintaining a healthy relationship and trying to have a social life. Their lives are ones with which any working parent can sympathize, infused with refreshing and much-needed humor.
NEW ON AMAZON PRIME:
“The
Boys”
Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen have teamed up again to bring another of Garth Ennis’s comic book series — the last one being AMC’s “Preacher” — to the screen.
“Supernatural” creator Eric Kripke joins them as showrunner for the extremely R-rated series, which
(“Gossip Girl”) also star, and you can watch starting Friday, July 26.
NEW ON HULU:
“Veronica Mars” Season 4
flips the traditional superhero genre on its head. The show’s team of shiny, attractive superheroes may put on a good show for the public eye, but they’re far from the noble do-gooders they appear to be. Enter Karl Urban (“Star Trek,” 2009) as Billy Butcher, who leads a vengeful Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid, “The Hunger Games,” 2012) and a team of gritty vigilantes on a hard-knocked mission to take down the corrupt superheroes who use their power and celebrity to do, well, whatever the heck they want. Elisabeth Shue (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”), Jennifer Esposito (“Blue Bloods”), Erin Moriarty (“Jessica Jones”) and Chace Crawford
“Veronica Mars” is the latest lucky recipient of a post-cancellation revival. The CW series that made Kristen Bell (“The Good Place”) big ended in 2007 and got a Kickstarter-funded feature film in 2014, and now a fourth season is available to stream on Friday, July 26. It serves as a continuation of both the series and the movie and takes place in the present day with teen sleuth Veronica Mars (Bell) — now adult sleuth Veronica Mars — back in her hometown of Neptune, California, and on the case of a serial killer who’s murdering spring breakers. Bell told Entertainment Weekly that the new series is “darker and bigger and more cinematic” than “Veronica Mars” of yore, but there are many familiar faces from the original series, including Enrico Colantoni (“Person of Interest”) as her dad, Keith Mars, and Jason Dohring (“Deep Impact,” 1998) as main squeeze Logan Echolls. Oh, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is on the writing team. Do you need any more reasons to watch?
“Light as a Feather” Season 2
If you were ever a teenage girl and attended a sleepover, you almost certainly played “light as a feather, stiff as a board,” but it probably didn’t end as badly for you as it does for the luckless participants in this supernatural thriller. The series follows five girls who are met with lethal consequences after playing the game, as they start dropping like flies in the exact ways that were predicted. Having survived Season 1, McKenna (Liana Liberato, “If I Stay,” 2014”) is dismayed to learn that she’s inherited the game’s curse and, fighting the evil force’s compulsion to play another round, she turns to Violet (Haley Ramm, “Disconnect,” 2012), the one person who can help her. The eerie series returns Friday, July 26.

Dash and dine: ‘Food Truck Nation’ delivers more bites on wheels
By Michelle Rose TV MediaFromshawarma quesadillas to blueberry pie PB&J (more on that later), food trucks are a sure bet if you’re looking for unique eats. And Brad Miller knows where you can find them.
Season 2 of “Food Truck Nation” premiered last week on the Cooking Channel. That means we can expect new weekly food truck discoveries all summer long.
In the episode airing Tuesday, July 23, Miller stops by El Shuko in Las Vegas, where an American classic (a double hot dog) is topped up with Guatemalan flavors, and a “quick”
jump over the Rocky Mountains takes Miller to Denver and to Crescent City Connection, which is dishing out Cajun- and Creole-inspired foods. Miller won’t earn any frequent flyer points with his final stop: he’s staying put in Denver to sample blueberry pie PB&J from Hey PB&J. And, yes, the peanut butter and jam sandwich is actually filled with a piece of pie. Like, pie crust and everything.
For diners, these are the kinds of menu items that have elevated street foods and made food trucks the symbols of cutting-edge culinary innovation.
On the other side of the concession window, mobile kitchens are
ideal for chefs who enjoy thinking outside the box — not just in terms of pushing the boundaries of food but also as a viable option for the entrepreneurial minded. They allow chefs to offer diverse, even niche menu items without the prohibitive costs of leasing a permanent location. And that helps to keep prices low for diners (depending on the ingredients, of course).
But not everyone’s a fan. Chicago was in the news recently when the Illinois Supreme Court upheld the city’s food truck regulations. Owners had challenged a rule prohibiting trucks from operating within 200 feet of any establishment that served food, even a convenience store. Another issue was the mandatory GPS tracking that allowed the
city to know a truck’s whereabouts at all times.
The city argued these measures were necessary to protect property tax-paying businesses. In the end, Chicago’s brick-and-mortar eateries won.
But there are other cities where food trucks and restaurants have found a way to exist side by side. Food truck-friendly cities such as Portland, Denver, Orlando, Philadelphia and Indianapolis are now benefitting from the entrepreneurial exodus occurring in other cities.
While America’s food truck experiment hasn’t always been trouble- or tension-free, one thing is certain: wherever chefs are allowed to do their thing, the true winners are usually the diners.

Black comedy is an interesting sort of humor; it takes a certain type of person to truly enjoy the oft-cynical, dark and satirical genre. However, a much lighter subgenre of this, recently dubbed “cringe comedy,” is capable of landing with a much broader audience.
Anyone who has ever embarrassed themselves, been forced to laugh at a situation gone so remarkably wrong yet out of your control, or has that one family member who leaves you shaking your head in disbelief every time they open their mouth, can relate to the humor of cringe comedy. Still not quite grasping the idea? Think “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Portlandia,” “Arrested Development” and, of course, the series created by Zach Galifianakis (“Birdman” 2014) and Jonathan Krisel (“Tim and Eric”) for FX, “Baskets.” You can catch a new episode of “Baskets” airing Thursday, July 25, on FX.
In case you’ve missed the first three and a half seasons of “Baskets” despite its annual Emmy nominations and fan praises, here’s what you need to know. First of all, the series marks the long-awaited return of beloved comedian Louie Anderson in his first recurring role since “The Louie Show” in 1996. He delivers an incredibly funny and touching portrayal of mother Christine Baskets, a character Louie based on his own mom.
Meanwhile, cringe-comedy royalty Galifianakis plays the roles of the show’s main character, Chip Baskets, and his twin brother, Dale. Chip is a man with big dreams who travels to Paris for school, only to fail miserably, ending up forced to return to his hometown of Bakersfield, California, with his Parisian wife, Penelope (played by penta-lingual musician and composer Sabina Sciubba), who wants a green card 100 percent more than she wants to be with Chip. The story of crushed hopes is truly a tragic one, especially when all you’ve ever wanted is to become a professional French clown. Chip has to fall back on working as a mere rodeo clown for the family business, and moving back home means dealing with everything, and everyone,
Clowning around Season 4 of ‘Baskets’ continues on FX
he wanted to run away from in the first place.
Through every disastrous mishap (becoming a train-hopping hobo, falling in with a homeless clown troupe, getting arrested, etc.), Chip keeps winding up back in his hometown, living and working with his mother, his insufferable twin brother, and getting crushed (sometimes literally) under all of the failures and shortcomings that he can’t seem to escape.
The fourth season of “Baskets” premiered on FX in June, and it’s the first season without co-creator and writer Louis C.K. on board; both the company and show cut all ties with him after he admitted to sexual misconduct. Even without the third member of the show’s creator/writer trio, fans are loving the direction of the show so far. L.A. Times critic Lorraine Ali praised the recent episodes, saying “the chemistry between Anderson and Galifianakis drives the best parts of the new season, but not at the expense of sharp humor, biting irony and plummeting self-worth rendered funny by its sheer hopelessness.”
It makes sense that the on-screen pair works so well together; Anderson and Galifianakis have both said that the former arrives on set already acting like a maternal figure to the younger comedians. In an interview with AOL Build Series on YouTube, Anderson talked about being asked to play the role of Galifianakis’s mother, and how he immediately thought the idea of him as the character was perfect: “I come from a family of 11, so at some point as a kid, you’re somebody’s mother.”
Men playing female roles in comedy doesn’t play the same way today as it did when “Mrs. Doubtfire” came out in 1993, but to anyone feeling a bit put off by the idea, I suggest watching a clip (perhaps a fan-favorite scene of Christine going shopping at Costco). Anderson plays the role so straight and genuine that the real joke of his casting is that it isn’t actually a joke at all.
The newest episode, titled “Common Room Wake” was written by John Levenstein, who has been in the writers room for shows such as “Silicon Valley” and “Arrested Development.” It seems as though FX has produced a comedy writer’s cool kids
club of sorts, attracting the funny people behind everything from “SNL” and “The Office” to “2 Broke Girls” and “How I Met Your Mother.” Laugh-out-loud moments are rarer in “Baskets” than your average television comedy, and its modern
American family scenes lean towards a cringe-inducing realism so much that it can feel like the show is asking you to laugh at yourself rather than the screen. That’s the beauty of it, though — bookending sometimes painful-to-watch normalcy with a
touch of absurdity and classic physical comedy keeps the viewer on their toes, which has been the whole point of black comedy since its conception.
American author and professor Wylie Sypher said that “to be able to laugh at evil and error means we
have surmounted them.” If you’re a fan already, stay tuned, and if you’re interested in surmounting a bit of human error yourself (albeit someone else’s) then tune in to FX on Thursday, July 25, for a brand new episode of “Baskets.”

Hellboy
Hellboy (Harbour), a demonic but friendly paranormal investigator, is called to England to assist on a hunt for three dangerous giants. After defeating the enormous beasts, Hellboy learns that he is the descendant of King Arthur and that it’s up to him to use the sword Excalibur to save London from a myr-
iad of demons, including the recently resurrected evil Blood Queen Nimue (Jovovich), before a portal to hell engulfs the entire city. This film is the third live-action film to feature the Dark Horse Comics character of the same name.
