Sure, there have been some solid female roles throughout the show’s seven seasons thus far, but sadly, for every Michonne (Danai Gurira, “Treme”) or Carol (Melissa McBride, “Living Proof,” 2008), there’s a Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies, “Prison Break”) (ugh) or an Andrea (Laurie Holden, “The Shield”) (major ugh). In general, it’s your Ricks (Andrew Lincoln, “Love Actually,” 2003) and your Daryls (Norman Reedus, “The Boondock Saints,” 1999) who are running the show.
Not so in the series’ spinoff, however. “Fear the Walking Dead” boasts a magnetic cast of characters overall, but it’s largely the women in the show who have taken charge of the cataclysmic situation that is now life and rolled with the zombie punches — and more importantly, strengthened and grown in the process. Season 3 of the “Walking Dead” prequel is set to premiere on AMC and, judging by the events of last season, there’s a lot left to unpack. Watch when “Fear the Walking Dead” returns Sunday, June 4, on the cabler. was created as a companion series to the hugely popular “The Walking Dead.” The newer series be-
gins in the earliest days of the zombie plague that’s ravaging the country, though the first episode gives us a look at sane, normal life, before the world collapses in on itself.
This is where we first meet Madison Clark (Kim Dickens, “Treme”), a high school guidance counselor and the show’s leading lady. She’s “Fear’s” answer to “The Walking Dead’s” Rick Grimes, though, as many have noted, her transformation from mild-mannered school employee to the take-charge leader of a group of survivors is all the more impressive because of the run-of-the-mill life she was leading before the plague hit.
As a sheriff’s deputy, trained to use firearms and to take control in difficult situations, Rick is an obvious choice as a leader. Madison, though no shrinking violet, doesn’t display the same outward qualities that would automatically put her in the driver’s seat in a world teeming with man-eating zom-
cause she’s such a brave and courageous woman to start with,” Dickens said of her character in an AMC Q&A. “She’s also feminine, and then all of a sudden this warrior comes out of her.”
“It’s not like she has all this outer experience to help her in the situation,” she added, “and she’s not skilled at defending a community or anything, but what it brings out from inside her normal persona is just fascinating.”
The upcoming season will show us a Madison who grows darker and more brutal as her situation demands, having left behind Strand (Colman Domingo, “Lincoln,” 2012) and the rest of her group to search for her son, Nick (Frank Dillane, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” 2009), with only her boyfriend Travis (Cliff Curtis, “Trauma”) and daughter Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey, “The 100”) in tow.
Alicia, who was introduced as an overachieving teenager and model student, grew up a lot last season, particularly after taking a man’s life in order to save Travis. Though the act strengthened her bond with her mother, it’s left her shaken, and this season will see her struggling to come to terms
While it’s nice to see some of the original group reunited, Ofelia (Mercedes Mason, “Chuck”) has gone full-on lone wolf, which is satisfying in its own way. No longer sheltered by her uber-protective parents, Ofelia has dropped the role of nurturer and supporter and displayed an inner resourcefulness that no one expected at the start of the series. She made it to the U.S.-Mexico border on her own at the end of last season, but it remains to be seen what comes next for her, having encountered a mysterious armed someone when she got there. Backbone-bear-
ing women aside, none of this is to say that none of the men in the show possess any chutzpah, of course. Nick has gone from heroin junkie to steely leader, and though his decisions haven’t always produced the best results, he’s grown up by leaps and bounds and become a source of strength for Luciana (Danay Garcia, “Prison Break”) as her own personal losses continue to pile up.
Hard-nosed and adaptable, Strand has proven himself to be a tenacious survivor as well. With the departure of Madison, Travis and Alicia, he’s back to looking out for numero uno this season. A brief shot in the season 3 trailer shows him being dangled off a high catwalk by men in uniform, however, so it doesn’t appear that his split from Madison and company does him any favors — not yet anyway.
AMC has kept season 3 details close to the vest in the lead-up to the premiere, but there’s no doubt that we have another actionpacked (and blood-spattered) season coming our way. See what becomes of the remaining survivors of the zombie plague when “Fear the Walking Dead” returns to AMC with a two-part season premiere airing Sunday, June 4.
Yesterday, France elected 39-year-old Emmanuel Macron to be its new president. Trump said he’s worried that, at 39, the president may be a little immature. Then he went back to tweeting insults at CNN.
A man who runs a pizzeria in California made a gluten-free pizza entirely out of cheese. Or, and hear me out, he just made cheese.
Donald Trump today — who, maybe you haven’t heard, is president — fired James Comey, the director of the FBI. He fired the guy who is investigating potential collusion between his campaign and Russia. Which is kind of like O.J. firing Judge Ito halfway through the trial.
You know, when we said Trump should act more presidential, we probably should have specified that we didn’t mean Nixon.
Centrist politician Emmanuel Macron won the French presidential election yesterday over far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, thanks to France’s unusual practice of awarding the presidency to the person with the most votes.
According to a new report, Sen. Bernie Sanders’s wife, Jane Sanders, is being investigated by the FBI for alleged bank fraud. Even worse, her husband is being investigated by his local deli for alleged Splenda theft.

The glitz. The glamor. The teeming throngs of adoring fans. The food — ah, the food! The lives of Food Network chefs are fabulous ones, at least in the minds of those who aspire to join their ranks, and once a year the specialty channel gives those hopefuls with dreams of stardom a chance to make that dream come true.
“Food Network Star” is back for a 13th season Sunday, June 4. Two of the network’s biggest stars, Bobby Flay (“Beat Bobby Flay”) and Giada De Laurentiis (“Giada at Home”), return as the hosts, mentors and judges for 12 hopefuls with stars in their eyes who are aching to land their very own Food Network show.
That’s a pretty big prize — so big, in fact, that it can’t be contained in just one show. Last season’s two “Food Network Star” companion series are back, too, giving Flay and De Laurentiis even more to work with as they consider who should be the eventual winner.
The first companion, “Food Network Star: Comeback Kitchen,” has been running former “Food Network Star” contestants through a gauntlet of challenges for the past three weeks. These folks hit it off with audiences in past seasons, and after three episodes of competing, one of them is ready to join the newcomers in the June 4 premiere.
Then there’s “Star Salvation,” a companion web series available at Food Network’s website (www.foodnetwork.com). Hosted
by former “Food Network Star” winner Jeff Mauro (“The Kitchen”) and Iron Chef Alex Guarnaschelli (“Chopped”), it’s a chance for each week’s eliminated contestant to earn his or her way back into the competition. The ultimate winner of “Star Salvation” will return to “Food Network Star” just in time to join the final four in the Aug. 6 episode.
While some “Food Network Star” winners of seasons past have faded into relative obscurity, be it due to
scheduling conflicts or other circumstances, others have gone on to become some of the channel’s most familiar faces — a fact best embodied by season 2’s winner Guy Fieri, host of “Guy’s Big Bite,” “Guy’s Grocery Games” and, of course, “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”
The next Guy Fieri could be in the wings just waiting for the chance to become Food Network’s next celebrity chef. “Food Network Star” premiers Sunday, June 4.
