The Tonys celebrate the best of the best on CBS Cover Story
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaBroadway is having a moment.
While New York’s beloved theater district has always been popular, it’s been particularly successful this past season, and the city’s performers are ready to celebrate.
Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”) takes the stage of New York’s iconic Radio City Music Hall to host the 71st Annual Tony Awards, airing Sunday, June 11, on CBS. Founded in 1947, the awards recognize outstanding achievement in a number of categories, including acting, writing and choreography, as well as more technical aspects of theater production such as costume and lighting design.
A Tony, Oscar and Golden Globe winner himself, Spacey is a natural choice to host what is considered by many to be the preeminent theater awards ceremony in the world. Still, he had no trouble making light of the gig when it was announced.
“I was their second choice for ‘Usual Suspects,’ fourth choice for ‘American Beauty’ and 15th choice to host this year’s Tony Awards. I think my career is definitely going in the right direction,” Spacey quipped. “Maybe I can get shortlisted to host the Oscars if everyone else turns it down.”
The actor is currently the star and executive producer of the Netflix series “House of Cards.” His role as Frank Underwood has netted him a Golden Globe and back-to-back SAG Awards. Before landing roles in critically lauded films such as “The Usual Suspects” (1995) and “American Beauty” (1999) — both of

which earned him Oscars — Spacey began his career in theater. He gained the attention of critics when he starred in “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” in the 1980s, and went on to win a Tony Award for his portrayal of Uncle Louie in “Lost in Yonkers” in 1991. A champion of the theater, Spacey served as the artistic director of the Old Vic in London from 2004 to 2015, and he has also launched a namesake foundation to support young actors, writers, directors and producers.
He takes the helm of the theater community’s biggest night to celebrate the successes of his peers on Broadway. This year’s Tony contenders face some fierce competition with 13 new musicals in contention for awards. Selected by an independent committee of theater professionals, the nomina-
“Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812,” a musical adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace,” leads the list of nominees with an astounding 12 nominations. Stars Denée Benton (“UnREAL”), who plays Natasha, and Josh Groban (“Life in Pieces”), who plays Pierre, are up for Tonys, which is particularly impressive given the fact that the production marks both performers’ Broadway debuts. The show has also been nominated for the coveted Best Musical award, but it faces stiff competition from the Canadian show “Come From Away,” the teen-centered “Dear Evan Hansen” and the movie-inspired musical comedy “Groundhog Day.”
Benton finds herself in good company in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical category alongside Bette Midler for “Hello Dolly,” Patti LuPone for “War Paint,” Christine Ebersole for “War Paint” and Eva Noblezada for “Miss Saigon.” Groban’s fellow Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical nominees include Christian Borle for “Falsettos,” Andy Karl for “Groundhog Day,” David Hyde Pierce for “Hello Dolly” and Ben Platt for “Dear Evan Hansen.” Their nonmusical counterparts are equally remarkable. The nominees for Best Play are “A
Doll’s House, Part 2,” “Indecent,” “Oslo” and “Sweat.” American Theater Hall of Fame inductee Kevin Kline is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for his work in “Present Laughter,” an honor shared by Denis Arndt for “Heisenberg,” Chris Cooper for “A Doll’s House, Part 2,” Corey Hawkins for “Six Degrees of Separation” and Jefferson Mays for “Oslo.” Legendary actress Sally Field leads the list of nominees for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her role in “The Glass Menagerie.” Her fellow nominees are Cate Blanchett for “The Present,” Jennifer Ehle for “Oslo,” Laura Linney for “Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes” and Laurie Metcalf for “A Doll’s House, Part 2.” Fans can access the full list of nominees at www.tonyawards.com, but there are a few other notable awards slated to be given out this year. Two-time Tony winner James Earl Jones (“The Great White Hope,” 1970) is set to be honored with this year’s Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater. Widely known for his voice work as Darth Vader from the Star Wars franchise and Mufasa from Disney’s “The Lion King,” Jones is highly regarded for his work on stage. The actor made his Broadway debut in 1957, and has starred in such shows as “Fences,” “Driving Miss Daisy” and “The Gin Game.”
Also, director, actress and choreographer Baayork Lee is set to receive the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award, which is presented to a member of the theater community who contributes to humanitarian, social service or charitable organizations. Lee is being recognized for her work with the National Asian Artists Project, which promotes the work of theater artists of Asian descent.
Gareth Fry and Pete Malkin are set to receive a special Tony Award for outstanding sound design for their work on “The Encounter,” a show about a National Geographic photographer who finds himself lost in Brazil.
The work of such artists has made live theater as popular as ever, and CBS is likely hoping to build on the success of last year’s Tony’s broadcast, which attracted its largest audience in 15 years. Enjoy a taste of Broadway as Kevin Spacey hosts the 71st Annual Tony Awards, Sunday, June 11, on CBS.
I saw that President Trump gave a commencement speech at Liberty University on Saturday, and he said: “Always have the courage to be yourself” and “chase your dreams.” Then he stopped talking because he ran out of fortune cookies.
I read somewhere that attendance at the ceremony was mandatory, and booing wasn’t allowed. Which, incidentally, are also the rules when you have dinner with Trump.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I’ve got good news and bad news. The bad news: The Washington Post reports that Trump revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador. Good news: Trump found the leaker!
The Late Late Show With James Corden
Over the weekend, the world’s biggest-ever cyberattack spread around the globe, infecting 150 countries. It’s pretty horrifying. Computers have been totally destroyed. In some cases, in extreme cases, people were forced to have actual face-to-face conversations. It was a nightmare.
The virus was stopped by a computer security expert who is only 22 years old. It is incredible. It’s the first time a 22-year-old guy has stopped a virus without putting ointment on it.
It’s prom season right now, and at a prom in Memphis, Tennessee, the rapper Drake made an appearance, attending the event with his cousin and her date. Kind of a mixed bag, though, because on one hand, you came to the prom with Drake. On the other hand, you came to the prom with your cousin.

Baking, British style: The U.K.’s biggest baking hit returns to PBS
By Andrew Warren TV MediaPerfect pastries: that’s not too much to expect, is it? Sadly, soggy bottoms and tumbled-down edges are common, and enough to get any hopeful home baker sent home in “The Great British Baking Show.”
The popular baking import is back for its fourth season, which premieres Friday, June 16, on PBS. Actually, “popular” might be an understatement. In the show’s home country, where it goes by “The Great British Bake Off,” it consistently ranks as one of the mostwatched shows on television, while here on this side of the pond, the third season was PBS’s moststreamed series last summer.
Pretty impressive stuff for a show that, on the surface, looks not so different from a lot of the other cooking and baking competitions out there. Each season brings together a number of home bakers eager to outbake their fellows and impress judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood in a variety of challenges.
Each episode features three separate challenges: a signature bake, in which the amateur bakers get to make one of their own recipes that they’ve practiced at home; a technical bake, in which the contestants are tasked with making a specific product, but are given only limited instructions, thus testing their technical knowledge of the baker’s craft; and a showstopper bake, in which each baker pulls out all the stops to create a breathtaking masterpiece
— then Berry and Hollywood send someone home.
English comedians Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc serve as the show’s presenters, offering commentary, insight and some slightly saucy quips.
As for those judges, they’re certainly a qualified pair. Berry has published nearly 80 books on cooking, including 2009’s bestselling “Baking Bible,” and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to culi-
nary arts. Hollywood has served as the head baker at numerous hotels, written cookbooks about bread and, in 2008, baked a bread that was named the most expensive in Britain.
In the crowded cooking competition space, it’s hard to stand out from the crowd, but the quintessential British-ness of “The Great British Baking Show” has allowed it to do just that. The fourth season of the U.K.’s biggest culinary hit kicks off Friday, June 16, on PBS.

Culper curtain call Final season of ‘TURN: Washington’s Spies’ premieres on AMC
By Jacqueline Spendlove TV MediaAbraham Woodhull (Jamie Bell, “Snowpiercer,” 2013) and his spy ring cronies are preparing to don their tricorne hats one last time. It’s the beginning of the end for “TURN: Washington’s Spies,” with the fourth and final season of the historical drama set to premiere Saturday, June 17, on AMC. The end of the American Revolution is on the horizon, but there are still a lot of loose ends to tie up for Abe and company when the series returns for its final 10 episodes.
The period drama is based on Alexander Rose’s book “Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring” and gives an account of the activities of the Culper Ring, a group of spies formed around four childhood friends that helped turn the tide of the American War of Independence. Abe is the nucleus of the group, and over the course of the series we’ve witnessed his transformation from humble cabbage farmer, hesitant to have any involvement in the war, to a hardened double agent and George Washington’s (Ian Kahn, “Dawson’s Creek”) most important spy.
As is the case with many historical dramas, the series takes its share of liberties with certain characters and their activities, but the key players are based on actual historical figures. Some of these, such as Abe, Anna Strong (Heather Lind, “Mistress America,” 2015) and Peggy Shippen (Ksenia Solo, “Lost Girl”), may not be household names today but were still important to the Culper Ring’s activities. The show also features more prominent figures, such as Washington, Benedict Arnold (Owain Yeoman, “The Mentalist”) and Gen. Charles Lee (Brian T. Finney, “Reno 911!”).
Last season wrapped with a nail-biter: the finale episode, entitled “Trial and Execution,” includes — you guessed it — a trial and an execution. With the vicious (and decidedly dead-eyed) Capt. Simcoe (Samuel Roukin, “Salem”) finally nailing Abe for treason against the Crown, the latter is
granted a brief show trial before being sent to the gallows, barely escaping the hangman’s noose thanks to the intervention of his father, Judge Richard Woodhull (Kevin McNally, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” 2003).
Sadly, Maj. John André (JJ Feild, “Captain America: The First Avenger,” 2011) isn’t so lucky. The cool head of British intelligence is hanged as a spy for plotting with Arnold — which effectively puts an end to the André-Peggy-Arnold love triangle that was a significant
focus of last season. Speaking of Arnold, once his treachery at West Point was discovered, he was forced to flee to New York, and neither side is terribly pleased with him; the patriots denounce him for his betrayal, and his fellow Redcoat officers turn up their nos-
This season picks up in the fall of 1780, a month or so after season 2 left off, and works its way forward from there. The action is turned towards Yorktown and the critical battle in Virginia that ultimately decided the war. Abe is right in the thick of things, orchestrating a raid to deprive the British of essential supplies. His relationship with his father has changed in the wake of last season, with the judge finally starting to see what his son has been working towards — and against — all this time.
“There’s a totally new dynamic between father and son,” executive producer Craig Silverstein, who also directs this season, told Entertainment Weekly. “Like a lot of Loyalists did later in the war, Richard has finally come around to seeing — not the light — but the darkness in all the [British] actions taken to police the state. The abuses piled up. Those were concentrated in the character of Simcoe, and that’s what pushed Richard over the edge.”
While “TURN” fans will be sad to see the show come to an end, such is the nature of historical dramas; there’s only so much story to tell. In any case, the series was never the critical or ratings beast that other shows on the network are or were. Last season cleared a little over half a million viewers on average, which is getting towards the bottom of the ratings barrel on AMC. The series did see consistent ratings growth for the last four episodes of season 3, however, so it’s safe to say that this final season will still enjoy a respectable audience as it finishes up an important story in America’s history.
es at him for his part in André’s capture and subsequent execution.
Season 4 sees him rounding up suspected spies with gusto (whether they’re guilty or not) and raising the Loyal American Legion to go up against Washington.
“’TURN: Washington’s Spies’ has always had a lofty goal — to tell the real story of the American Revolution from the ground up, “ said AMC president of original programming Joel Stillerman in a statement. “To capture the truth about the choice regular people had to make to support what has become the United States of America.”
Get your history fix when the final season of “TURN: Washington’s Spies” kicks off with a twohour premiere Saturday, June 17, on AMC.
