Mutants in wonderland
‘Legion’ travels through time in Season 3
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaThe battle between good and evil has been raging in prime time for decades, but one particular series blurs the lines between hero and villain. FX’s “Legion” has captivated TV viewers, and fans have one more chance to enjoy the show before it’s over for good.
Dan Stevens (“Downton Abbey”) returns as dangerously troubled mutant David Haller in the season premiere of “Legion,” airing Monday, June 24, on FX. Diagnosed with schizophrenia at a young age, Haller had no idea that he was actually a mutant until a fateful encounter with a fellow psychiatric patient revealed the truth. The show is based on the character from the Marvel Comics Universe, an extremely powerful be ing who’s the son of X-Men leader Charles Xavier.
This marks the third and final sea son of the show, much to the chagrin of fans. During a “Legion” Season 3 panel at this year’s WonderCon in San Francisco in March, creator Noah Hawley explained why it made sense to end the show, despite its populari ty and acclaim.
“I feel like where we left him at the end of the second season, again
at his lowest point, there’s only two ways that he can go — he can either get back to a healthy place, or he can go off the bottom of the map,” Hawley said. “Obviously it’s bittersweet, but a story has no meaning without its ending.”
In the first season of the show, Haller was brought to a mutant facility known as Summerland, where he learned to control his mutant powers. He soon discovered that his mind was infected with a parasitic mutant known as the Shadow King/Amahl Farouk (Navid Negahban, “24”). All the while, his new allies tried to protect him from Division 3, a heavily funded anti-mutant government
Haller’s twisted perception of reality. There’s a time-traveling aspect to the new season, which will only add to the already psychedelic visuals.
What’s more, previews for Season 3 feature references to “Alice in Wonderland,” promising a whole new level of trippy storytelling.
Season 3 trailers also have viewers in a tizzy because of their introduction of an iconic X-Men character.
“Game of Thrones” alum Harry Lloyd, best known for his role as Viserys Targaryen in the HBO hit, has been cast as Prof. Xavier, whom viewers see in flashbacks in “Legion’s” early Season 3 teasers. Haller’s mother will be portrayed by Danish actress Stephanie

sons of the show. Favorite Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation”) returns as Lenny Busker, Haller’s best friend. Though she died in Season 1, Farouk later gave her a new body. Rachel Keller portrays Haller’s girlfriend, Syd Barrett, a mutant with the unique ability to switch bodies with others by touching them. Keller was cast in “Legion” after her breakout role in Hawley’s “Fargo,” which also starred fellow “Legion” cast member Jean Smart (“Designing Women”). Smart played Melanie Bird, a demanding psychiatric therapist at Summerland, for the first two seasons of the show.
The supporting cast also includes Bill Irwin (“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”) as Cary Loudermilk, a mutant scientist and one of the founders of Summerland. He and fellow mutant Kerry Loudermilk (Amber Midthunder, “Roswell, New Mexico”) coexist within the same body most of the time. While they can take separate physical forms when they need to, Kerry only ages when outside of Cary’s body, leaving her much younger than her counterpart.
Mutant Ptonomy Wallace (Jeremie Harris, “Blue Bloods”) serves as Bird’s memory specialist, thanks to his ability to remember everything and transport people back into their own memories. Hamish Linklater (“The New Adventures of Old Christine”) rounds out the cast as Division 3 interrogator Clark Debussy.
Behind the scenes, the cast is in good hands with Hawley at the helm. In addition to creating “Legion” and “Fargo,” he’s worked as a writer and producer on the hit Fox drama “Bones” and has written five novels. He’s won a number of accolades and awards, including an Emmy, two Golden Globes, a Critics’ Choice Television Award and a Writers Guild of America Award.
His unique take on the comic book genre in “Legion” has been a hit with viewers as well, earning the show high marks on the aggregator review sites Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, which are based on user reviews.
Thanks to Hawley’s vision, solid performances and stunning visuals, FX’s latest hit appeals to a vast crosssection of TV viewers, not just fans of superheroes and comic books. Enjoy a new season of unexpected twists and turns as David Haller teams up with another mutant in the new season of “Legion,” premiering Monday, June 24, on FX.

A woman in England was searching a farm with a metal detector when she found what she thought was a foilwrapped chocolate coin, only to find out later that it’s a 1,500-year-old solid gold pendant worth a fortune. Yeah, unbelievable — to get that close to finding chocolate only to be disappointed.
The drug store CVS has announced it will change the music it plays while you’re on hold, which is big news, because they haven’t changed the music in 20 years. In their defense, “Genie in a Bottle” is still a really good song.

The NBA Finals are underway. The Golden State Warriors are in it again, taking on the Toronto Raptors. This is big for the players on both of these teams. You know, if they don’t do well on their NBA Finals they won’t be able to get into a good college.

NEW ON NETFLIX:
“The Chosen One” (“O Escolhido”)
This Brazilian thriller follows three young doctors who travel to the Pantanal, a sprawling tropical wetland in Brazil, to provide vaccinations against a new mutation of the Zika virus. The job is no easy one, however, as the residents of the secluded community they’re working in reject modern medicine, putting their faith instead in an enigmatic healer who has a supernatural ability to cure disease. Secrets and mysteries unravel for the newcomers as “The Chosen One” (Renan Tenca, “3%”) and his fervent devotees force them to entertain a power beyond their scientific understanding. The series premieres Friday, June 28.
“Mike Epps: Only One Mike”
Netflix’s latest standup special drops Tuesday, June 25, and shines a spotlight on Mike Epps, the irreverent and inappropriate comedian known for roles in “Next Friday” (2000) and “Friday After Next” (2002), “The Hangover” (2009) and the shortlived “Uncle Buck” TV series. The no-holds-barred show comes from Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., as Epps riffs on his childhood dyslexia, the highs and lows of raising four daughters, the wisdom of the elderly and more.
“Dope” Season 3
The new season of this insightful docuseries streams Friday, June 28. The show gives a frank look at the war on drugs in America and beyond, providing a view from both sides of the drug trade, from the perspectives of dealers, law enforcement officials and the users and addicts caught in the middle. Past episodes have looked at the heroin epidemic in Baltimore, the influx of drugs being smuggled in from the Caribbean, meth addiction in Indiana and more. Each episode delivers first-hand accounts and interviews from those involved in the trade: new
and longtime users, high-profile and small-time drug dealers speaking from behind masks, and cops fighting a never-ending battle to keep the problem at bay.
“Motown Magic” Season 2
This animated series brings the sounds of Motown to life for a young audience. Executive produced by Motown legend Smokey Robinson, the family-friendly series follows Ben, an imaginative boy who uses his magic paintbrush to bring his neighborhood’s colorful street art to life. Creator Josh Wakely acquired worldwide rights for Motown music to feature in the series, and each episode is backed by hits from Michael Jackson, The Jackson 5, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes and more as Ben and his pals have adventures and learn life lessons. The second season is available Friday, June 28.
NEW ON AMAZON PRIME:
“The Spy Who Dumped Me” (2018)
“Saturday Night Live” darling Kate McKinnon and Mila Kunis (“That ‘70s Show”) make up a winning team for this action/comedy spy spoof. They star as best friends who get wrapped up in a bullet-riddled chase across Europe after Audrey (Kunis) gets dumped by her boyfriend (Justin Theroux, “The Leftovers”), who, unbeknownst to her, is a CIA agent. Car
gunning for the key role of Mattie Ross. The frontier tale follows the gutsy young Mattie as she and boozy lawman Rooster Cogburn (Bridges) set out to track down the man who murdered her father. The film was nominated for heaps of awards, including 10 Oscars, and though it didn’t take any of those home in the end, it definitely warrants a watch and a rewatch.
NEW ON HULU:
“Juliet, Naked” (2018)
This charming romcom is based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Hornby, the same writer responsible for books-turned-movies
chases, knife fights and shootouts abound as the girls flee pursuers across Europe’s finest cities, from Vienna to Prague to Amsterdam to Berlin. The flick won Favorite Comedy Movie at last year’s People’s Choice Awards and the leads’ performances have earned positive words from critics. You can stream it Friday, June 28.
“True Grit” (2010)
Some big names are attached to this Coen brothers Western, which streams Saturday, June 29. Besides being executive produced by Steven Spielberg, it counts Jeff Bridges (“The Big Lebowski,” 1998), Matt Damon (“The Martian,” 2015) and Josh Brolin (“No Country for Old Men,” 2007) among its stars, as well as an absurdly talented Hailee Steinfeld (“The Edge of Seventeen,” 2016) who, at 13 years old, was chosen from 15,000 other hopefuls
“High Fidelity” (2000), “About a Boy” (2002) and “Fever Pitch” (2005). Rose Byrne (“Spy,” 2015) stars as Annie, a woman in an unhappy relationship with Duncan, played by Chris O’Dowd (“Bridesmaids,” 2011). She finds herself drawn into an unlikely romance with Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke, “Training Day,” 2001), an obscure American musician of whom Duncan is an ardent fan, after she posts a negative review of one of his albums, impressing him with her honesty. The movie is an easy summer watch with a great cast, and you can stream it Monday, June 24.
“Diane” (2018)
This drama did well for itself at its world premiere at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, where it won Best Cinematography, Best Narrative Feature and Best Screenplay. Mary Kay Place (“Being John Malkovich,” 1999) plays the titular Diane, a woman in her 70s with not much going on in her life beyond taking care of others. When she’s not feeding the needy at the local soup kitchen, she’s playing cards with her terminally ill cousin (Deirdre O’Connell, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” 2004) or checking in on her opioid-addicted son (Jake Lacy, “I’m Dying Up Here”), who just wants her out of his hair. It’s a sad but moving look at an everywoman trying to avoid facing the memories of her past, and Place shines in the role. You can watch it Saturday, June 29.

Kids love surprises! I think it’s all part of the curiosity of youth, the need that kids have to always be exploring. To paraphrase a favorite kids cartoon character, it’s all about taking chances, making mistakes and getting messy.
That’s probably why the competitors in “Chopped Junior” tend to do so well with those mysterious basket ingredients that “Chopped” is so famous for. A new season of the pint-sized competition gets underway Tuesday, June 25, on Food Network, with a bunch of new baskets and a group of new competitors ready to tackle them head-on.
Ted Allen hosts each episode as four contestants between the ages of 9 and 15 enter the “Chopped” kitchen eager to see what ingredients are hidden inside of the iconic baskets. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill kids, though: they’re all maestros in the kitchen, with palates and skills far ahead of what most of their peers can boast.
Besides the age of the contestants, the competition is more or less classic “Chopped.” In each round, the contestants are each given a basket containing four mystery ingredients, each of which must be featured in their dish. Once time runs out, the plates are presented to a panel of
judges, who then rate the dishes based on taste, presentation, creativity and use of the basket ingredients before chopping one of the contestants and sending him or her packing.
Of course, while the contestants in “Chopped Junior” may be skilled, they’re still amateurs and a far cry from the professional chefs that compete in the regular “Chopped.” While the judges’ standards are definitely high, they do pull their punches a bit more than they do in the adult version
— after all, you can’t expect a 9-year-old to have the same level of expertise as a culinary school grad!
What the kids do have, though, is way more experience and skill in the kitchen than a lot of adults do, and watching their faces light up with curiosity, joy, confusion and terror when they crack open those baskets and see what’s inside is a delight to behold. The latest season of “Chopped Junior” premieres Tuesday, June 25, on Food Network.

Election season Stephen Colbert goes live after first Democratic debate
By Kenneth Andeel TV MediaAs the 2020 presidential election approaches, the world of American late-night television is also ramping up for one of its busiest and most fruitful periods. On Wednesday, June 26, and Thursday, June 27, CBS present special live episodes of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” to cover the first Democratic primary debate of the 2020 election cycle.
The history of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” is closely tied to the electoral politics of the United States. The show premiered in 2015, when Colbert took over from the departing David Letterman. Colbert had previously been a star correspondent for “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” before hosting his own satirical news show, “The Colbert Report.”
Both of those shows earned a reputation for deep engagement with the political climate in America, and when Colbert set up shop at CBS — alongside band leader Jon Batiste, who has his own interest in grassroots activism and humanitarianism — the network was open about the likelihood of the late-night slot becoming more political than it had been under the previous creative team. This new formula has proven successful: “The Late Show” has retained the lead in late-night viewers so far in 2019.
Colbert’s 2015 debut coincided fortuitously with the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, and Colbert’s first season of “The Late Show” leapt right into the fray with coverage of the Democratic and Republican primaries, and the subsequent election for president. Since the 2016 election, Colbert — a self-described Democrat — hasn’t shied away from criticizing the current administration, and it’s obvious that he would personally prefer to see a Democrat in the White House.
That doesn’t mean he’ll pull any punches when it comes to the Democratic debates. Colbert and his writing staff are more than prepared for a sarcastic romp following the debates, and will not hesitate to deride anyone who
falls prey to gaffes, dud lines or hypocritical arguments.
The debate itself is shaping up to be an interesting, if potentially messy, event. The Democratic National Committee established some very specific requirements for candidates looking to participate in the first of likely 12 debates total in this primary. In order to qualify, a candidate needs to register a minimum of one percent in three approved pre-debate polls or receive campaign contributions from 65,000 unique donors with a minimum of 200 from every state in the country.
Total participation in the debate is capped at 20 candidates, but even with those new gatekeeping rules in place, the field of eligible contenders is already approaching the maximum allowance. CNN has confirmed 13 eligible candidates as of late May, with six more nearly there.
For obvious reasons, having 20 people talking over each other on a stage, each looking for opportunities to make their individual cases and distinguish themselves, was determined to be impossible; that kind of chaos helps no one, and for that reason, the DNC decided to split the first debate of the primary across two nights in order to reduce the cacophony onstage.
The DNC then went a step further and declared that the specific participants on each night would be randomly determined (rather than selected preferentially according to perceived metrics of popularity, relevance or seniority). The DNC apparently learned a lesson from the roundly mocked Republican debates of 2015, during which debate rosters were handpicked by leadership, leading to the B-list debaters being scornfully dubbed “the kids table.”
The field of Democratic candidates for the 2020 election is a mix of familiar veterans and upstart newcomers, nearly all of whom have been guests on Colbert’s various series. It’s much too early in the process to declare a frontrunner, but there are candidates who seem more likely to stay in it for the long haul than others.
Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and former vicepresident Joe Biden are among the highest polling candidates at the moment. Sanders had a competitive run in the 2015 Democratic primaries, and his 2020 campaign was eagerly anticipated by Democratic supporters looking for an agent of change passionate about social causes. Sen. Warren, another longtime favorite, didn’t run in the 2016 campaign, but has since
been preparing for an attempt.
Biden also sat out the 2016 campaign (having previously run in 2008) but is back for the 2020 edition and boasts the strongest name recognition among the field of contenders.
Other candidates of note include Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg, California Sen. Kamala Harris and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, as well as former congressman Beto O’Rourke of Texas. Some of
the interesting outlier candidates who may spice up the conversation at the debates (and become likely targets for comedians like Colbert) include tech-obsessed entrepreneur Andrew Yang and newagey spiritualist and author Marianne Williamson. The participation requirements are at their lowest threshold for the first debate, and the minimums will double before the next debate in July, thinning the field of prospective partici-
pants and likely removing some quirky niche characters from the mix.
If you’re interested in following the debate and its aftermath, the two halves of the debate proper will be hosted and broadcast live by NBC and MSNBC on Wednesday, June 26 and Thursday, June 27. Following the conclusion of each evening’s debate, “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” goes live on CBS.

Dumbo
When the horses are sold as a costsaving measure, equestrian performer Holt Farrier (Farrell) is tasked with caring for the circus’s newborn elephant. Upon discovering that the infant elephant has massive ears, his boss, Max Medici (DeVito), instructs him to keep the ears hidden from circus customers.
However, the ears come free during the little elephant’s first performance, and when the audience mocks him, throws peanuts at him and calls him “Dumbo,” his mother flies into a rage, causing great devastation and even killing a man. With his mother sold off to prevent any further incidents, baby Dumbo is befriended by Holt’s two chil-
