Gritty comicbook series ‘Preacher’ returns to AMC Cover Story
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaThere is no such thing as typical television anymore. While traditional dramas and sitcoms are still key landmarks on the prime-time landscape, the rise of cable giants has produced TV series that push boundaries in ways network shows cannot.
One of those boundary-pushing series is AMC’s “Preacher,” and it returns with a two-night event beginning Sunday, June 25, and continuing Monday, June 26, on AMC. Dominic Cooper (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” 2011) stars as West Texas preacher Jesse Custer, who’s on a mission to find God — literally — in the drama, which has garnered a reputation for its stunning visuals, offbeat comedy and thrilling horror.
Based on the ‘90s DC Vergito comicbook series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, “Preacher” was created by Seth Rogen (“Knocked Up,” 2007), Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad”) and Evan Goldberg (“Superbad,” 2007), and picked up by AMC in September 2015. Its 10-episode first season premiered in May 2016 and proved so popular that an expanded 13-episode second season was announced before the end of June that year.
AMC executive Charlie Collier had high praise for the series when the renewal was announced: “What Sam, Seth, Evan and the entire creative team have achieved in bringing Garth Ennis’ graphic novel to the screen is extraordinary,” Collier said. “We look forward to more time with

these unforgettable characters, be it in heaven, hell, Texas or beyond.”
In the series, a disillusioned Custer has been possessed by a mysterious entity known as Genesis, which gives him the power to compel others to do exactly what he wants. Known as “the Word of God,” the power forces listeners to obey Custer’s commands, so long as they can hear and understand them. Armed with the Word and deadly hand-to-hand combat skills thanks to his sordid and violent past, the preacher sets out to find God and make him answer for his actions. The entity Genesis is appar-
ently the product of a union between an angel and a demon, giving it elements of both good and evil.
This season, “Preacher” follows Custer as he embarks on an epic road trip with his allies, who include Tulip O’Hare, played by Academy Award nominee Ruth Negga (“Loving,” 2016). A fan favorite, Tulip is Custer’s gun-toting, highly capable ex-girlfriend. Custer’s best friend is a charismatic Irish vampire named Cassidy, portrayed by English actor Joseph Gilgun (“Misfits”). Ian Colletti (“Jimmy,” 2013) also returns as Eugene Root, a young man with a disfigured face. Throughout season 1, and presumably season 2, Custer and his friends must elude a bounty hunter with god-like powers known as The Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish,
Trailers for season 2 have fans excited about catching a glimpse of Herr Starr, a villainous character from the comics who works for The Grail, a sinister organization out to get Custer. However, producers have been keeping mum about who will play this season’s big bad. With a large portion of the regular cast wiped out by the end of last season thanks to a massive explosion that destroyed Annville, Texas, there are several new cast members hopping on board for season 2.
Match of
Month
Kinship Partners is pleased to honor Bryella Fluegge, Alexia Cripps and Lenora Faulk as our Match of the Month.
About four years ago, Alexia called the Kinship Partners office and asked about mentoring. She wanted a little girl in her life. She and Lenora were matched and their friendship quickly became precious to both of them.
Then, Lenora moved out of the area. Alexia’s heart was broken, but eventually she decided she would open her heart to another child and became Bryella’s Kinship Mentor. They also were immediately bonded and had wonderful times together.
Less than a year later, Lenora moved back into the area. Of course, she wanted Alexia back in her life! And as expected, Alexia was more than willing.
Lexi is always ready with another story about “her girls” and their visits to her farm, whether it be naming the chickens or running around with the goats. These three are a match made in heaven.
Why not start your own friendship journey?
The general consensus among fans and critics is that actor Pip Torrens (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” 2015) will play Herr Starr, but nothing official has been released to confirm the casting. Other new regular cast members include “Game of Thrones” alum Noah Taylor and Julie Ann Emery (“Fargo”). Also, Malcolm Barrett (“Timeless”), Ronald Guttman (“The Hunt for Red October,” 1990) and Justin Prentice (“13 Reasons Why”) have landed recurring roles in season 2.
As with other comicbook adaptations, “Preacher” has fans wondering whether the TV show will follow the source material or deviate from it as other series such as “The Walking Dead” and “Game of Thrones” have done. As the group ventures further afield this season, it seems as if the show is about to take a cue from the comics, which were known for hopping around from place to place as Custer searched for God. This season whisks viewers to New Orleans and even Sin City as Custer continues his quest. He and his friends end up entangled in a battle spanning heaven, hell and many points in between.
New locations have the potential to add even more thrills to a program that’s already doing well. More than two million viewers tuned in to the pilot, and the drama held fairly steady throughout its first season. AMC’s latest comicbook adaptation was among the top cable dramas of 2016 — part of a list that included ratings juggernauts “Game of Thrones,” “The Walking Dead” and “Fear the Walking Dead.”
Season 1 proved popular enough to spawn “Talking Preacher,” a live after-show hosted by Chris Hardwick, in which guests discuss the night’s episode. Viewers can tune into “Talking Preacher” immediately following each new episode.
Highly praised for its visuals, “Preacher” has earned a number of industry accolades, including nominations for the American Society of Cinematographers Awards and the Art Directors Guild Awards. The show is also up for a coveted Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Television Series, but fans will have to wait until the awards ceremony June 28 to find out if the quirky horror comedy-drama is a winner.
In the meantime, don’t miss the season premiere of “Preacher,” airing Sunday and Monday, June 25 and 26, on AMC.

The shoe store Payless is filing for bankruptcy and closing nearly 400 stores in the United States. Yes, 400 shoe stores closed, and thousands of “soles” were lost. The problem was their work ethic. Most of Payless was just a bunch of “loafers.”

There’s a new report that says more than half of American workers didn’t use all their vacation days last year. They had them, they just didn’t take them. So the people who did the study asked why. Some said they did it to impress their boss with their work ethic. The rest said, I hate my family.

Meat fire yum: ‘Man Fire Food’ seeks out flame-touched cuisine
By Andrew Warren TV MediaHot enough for you? No, not the temperature outside — although at this time of year it can be pretty scorching — but rather the flames, specifically the ones being hunted down by Roger Mooking.
The host of “Man Fire Food” has been back with another season of the Cooking Channel show since early last month, with new episodes airing Tuesday evenings. This week’s new episode airs Tuesday, June 27.
This week’s stop on his quest to find the most interesting and lipsmacking ways to cook with fire is right in the metropolitan heart of the Lone Star State. There, he
hangs out with an award-winning pitmaster, who takes his classic Texas barbecue beyond the norm. In Texas, beef is king, but for this barbecue guru, it’s all about the special cuts that don’t often find their way onto people’s plates.
Later, it’s off to Austin, where our charming host finds a chef with a unique piece of equipment that’s used to cook whole chickens over hot coals. Paired with squash stuffed with farro and veggies, it’s a fire-touched meal to make anyone’s mouth water.
And that’s what “Man Fire Food” is all about: the seemingly countless ways that food can be prepared with that most basic of cooking “appliances” — fire. There are no electric ranges, sousvide machines or microwave ov-
ens to be seen: just fire, whether it’s open flames or smoldering coals.
In next week’s episode, which is set to air on Independence Day, the host sticks around in Texas. In San Antonio, he meets up with recent “Iron Chef Gauntlet” contestant chef Jason Dady to make a Spanish paella with a Thai twist over an open fire. Then, it’s back to Austin for Mooking, where he finds a restaurant with an astounding 30 sausages on its menu.
Later this season, the host checks out “outlaw barbecue” in Ridgefield, Connecticut; Brazilianstyle barbecue in Palatine, Illinois; andouille sausage in Nashville, Tennessee; and, of course, a whole-hog barbecue.
No matter where he goes, Roger Mooking has no trouble finding people who cook with fire, often in ways that even he, an experienced chef, has never seen before. Catch a new episode of “Man Fire Food” on Tuesday, June 27, on Cooking Channel.

CHANNEL GUIDE
Ten years on ‘Zoo’ jaunts forward a decade in season 3
By Jacqueline Spendlove TV MediaThere’s no denying that “Zoo” knows how to deliver a cliffhanger. The show’s freshman season closed on a veritable wall of animals blocking the progress of our intrepid heroes, while the final moments of season 2 delivered a flash-forward that not only gave us a glimpse into the declining state of the world, but informed us that a major character we just saw killed (or so we thought!) is still, in fact, very much alive. See what season 3 has to offer when “Zoo” returns Thursday, June 29, on CBS. Based on the bestselling novel by James Patterson (who’s also an executive producer) and Michael Ledwidge, “Zoo” is a dramatic thriller about a worldwide wave of vicious attacks by animals against humans. James Wolk (“You Again,” 2010) stars as zoologist Jackson Oz, who investigates the strange attacks alongside a team that includes Abraham Kenyatta (Nonso Anozie, “Game of Thrones”), a safari guide and friend of Jackson’s; Mitch Morgan (Billy Burke, “Twilight,” 2008), an oddball veterinary pathologist; and Jamie Campbell (Kristen Connolly, “House of Cards”), a journalist.
As the series progresses, so does the ferocity and co-ordination of the animal attacks, making it quite plain that this is far from normal animal behavior. There’s foul play at work, and it all gets very scientific, with mutations and triple helixes and genomic fossils and other terms I won’t pretend to be familiar with.
Things appeared to be looking up in the season 2 finale: Jackson and Co. landed on a cure, and even got it out into the world. Unfortunately, another group of scientists was hard at work, too, and it wasn’t interested in simply curing the animals — its end game was to end the human race. The Shepherds, as they’re known, work for Jackson’s father, and released a gas that effectively sterilized all humans just as the animal cure was dispersed. Well shucks.
This is still the state of things in the season 2 epilog, which jaunts forward to the year 2027. The hu-
man population is petering out, with no babies born in the last decade, and Jackson works tirelessly to solve the problem of the ultrasavage razorbacks: unstoppable wolf-like hybrids that are another
one of the Shepherds’ charming creations, and which dragged off a self-sacrificing Mitch in the season finale.
We get a shot of proud poppa Abe with Dariela (Alyssa Diaz,
“Army Wives”), who announced she was pregnant at the end of last season (before the gas was released). Their 10-year-old son is graduating from a grade school that will close its doors forever be-
who points out that the hybrid attacks are getting worse. Much more importantly, she tells him that the only person who can create a cure isn’t dead, as Abe believes: It’s Mitch Morgan, that solver of all problems and come-upper of all plans, and he’s very much alive. This is his daughter, Clementine (Gracie Dzienny, “Chasing Life”), all grown up, and she knows where Mitch can be found. End credits.
Like I said, “Zoo” knows how to keep us hanging. The show is taking on a notably different feel for season 3. What started out with an intriguing but not particularly complicated problem of “the animals are acting weird, what’s up with that?” has moved into something much more broad. Presumably, season 3 will put a spotlight on Mitch: Where’s he been holed up these past 10 years, and what’s he been doing? How did he escape the pack of hybrids that, by all appearances, devoured him? Why has he been keeping his existence under wraps?
On a larger scale, season 3 examines what life is like in a world that has no long-term future. Even if Mitch, veterinary pathologist extraordinaire, comes up with a cure, as Clem says he can, we’re looking at a society learning to recover from a 10-year gap in the population.
It also appears that the hybrids are this season’s main overarching conflict, as is their creator, “a shadowy figure with a startling connection to the team’s past,” according to CBS. Said team is currently scattered to the four winds for the most part, but expect them to be reunited in the wake of the news that Mitch is alive, thus giving everyone a hope for the future.
hind him, as he’s among the last of the world’s 10-year-olds. The whole thing has a very “Children of Men” vibe about it.
Outside the school, Abe is approached by a young blond woman
Aside from Dzienny as the nowgrown Clementine, there are a couple of other new cast members this season. Hilary Jardine (“Van Helsing”) and Athena Karkanis (“Low Winter Sun”) are set to appear in recurring roles in season 3. Karkanis plays Abigail, a gutsy operative with a surprising tie to Jackson, and Jardine plays Tessa, Jackson’s new lady love who plays an important part in helping refugees to safety.
Catch the season 3 premiere of “Zoo” when the thrilling series returns Thursday, June 29, on CBS.
