a Will Will Forte’s
By Jacqueline Spendlove TV MediaChristmas break and then some!
It’s been almost three months since “The Last Man on Earth” closed off the first half of its sophomore season, and it’s time to get some answers.
As of the episode that aired Sunday, Dec. 13, more than one character has either died or probably died (it’s a comedy, I swear!), and at least one astronaut (hint: the only astronaut) was last seen plummeting to Earth to almost-certain doom. Or maybe he survives? The improbable keeps happening in this unpredictable series, and, as I said, we need some answers. Here’s hoping they’re forthcoming when the post-apocalyptic comedy returns from hiatus Sunday, March 6, on Fox.
Contrary to the show’s title, Phil Miller (Will Forte, “Saturday Night Live”), the show’s central character, is not, in fact, the last man on Earth. The series opener sees him scouring the continent for other survivors of a virus that has wiped out most of humanity, and just after giving up, he meets the good-hearted (albeit profoundly irritating) Carol Pilbasian (Kristen Schaal, “Gravity Falls”).
Not long into the first season, the pair is joined by fellow survivors Melissa (January Jones, “Mad Men”) and Todd (Mel Rodriguez, “Getting On”). More survivors continue to trickle into the fold, bringing the number as of the season 1 finale to seven — plus Phil’s estranged astronaut brother, Mike (Jason Sudeikis, “We’re the Millers,” 2013), who’s stranded out in space, unbeknownst to anyone.
If your thought is that the struggle to survive in a devastated world doesn’t really sound like a comedic premise, you’re not alone. The idea of a global pandemic or zombie apocalypse wiping out most of humanity has certainly been put to the screen before, but it’s generally in a much more dramatic venue. That, of course, is part of the appeal of the hilarious “The Last Man on Earth,” and what makes it stand out.
“We’re at a time where people are willing to embrace things that aren’t just the same thing you’ve seen a million times,” executive producer Chris Miller said in a Details magazine in-
from hiatus
terview last year. “So it got a really good reception all around town, especially at Fox where — to their credit — you wouldn’t expect a show like this to be on network television.”
The show has been generally well received by audiences and critics alike; viewership for the last three episodes to air surpassed that of the season 2 premiere of 3.14 million. Though the show hasn’t secured any award wins yet, it snagged four Emmy nods and three Critics’ Choice nominations.
With the emergence of new characters being more of a season 1 focus, the first half of the current season has followed the group as it tries — and often fails — to achieve some semblance of a working society. This includes some uncivilized and rather archaic methods of punishment, the struggle for food and an overzealous attempt to subdue a bull. There’s hope, though, as the gang’s cow gives birth, proving not only that life can carry on in this post-virus world, but also that there are other living things out there that they haven’t yet discovered.
Meanwhile, space-bound Mike has started to lose hope as his companion worms die off one by one,
but just as he’s about to commit suicide by jettisoning himself into space, he spots a newborn worm, giving him the hope he needs to go on living.
Phil to henceforth go by his unfortunate middle name, Tandy. Inflicted with a severe case of appendicitis, new Phil is not long for this world unless the offending organ can be suc-

Meanwhile, Mike, determined to return to Earth, is hurtling down towards the planet in a dubious landing capsule, which begins to tumble as it re-enters the atmosphere. Exciting Forte, who also created the series, is keeping pretty mum about what we can expect for the rest of the season, but according to the released synopsis for the March 6 episode, Mike DOES, against all odds, survive his descent to Earth (surprise!). He’s still alone, however, in a world seemingly devoid of human life, which presumably puts him in a situation similar to Tandy’s in the series opener. Additionally, it’s been announced that 9-year-old “Room” (2015) star Jacob Tremblay will make an appearance as a young Phil “Tandy” Miller, presumably in a flashback sequence. This peek into Tandy’s past may give us an idea as to why he is the way he is — selfish, obnoxious and all together pretty unpleasant, albeit redeemable.
Don’t miss the newest episode of “The Last Man on Earth” when the post-apocalyptic comedy returns from hiatus Sunday, March 6, on Fox.

The secret is out: Michael Symon loves meat. OK, so it probably wasn’t that big of a secret, but the guy definitely has a meat tooth rather than a sweet tooth.
The Cleveland-based chef is a Food Network favorite, a host of ABC’s culinary talk show “The Chew” and an Iron Chef to boot. He’s also the host of “Burgers, Brew & ‘Que,” a fun little Food Network show that airs Friday evenings on the culinary channel — you can catch a new episode March 11.
The premise is one that makes me more than a little envious: our
host travels from city to city across America seeking out — and, of course, trying out — the best burgers and barbecue that he can find.
And since he’s trying out the best local meats, he needs the best local brews to wash it down. With craft beers and brew pubs experiencing a modern-day renaissance, there’s always something unique and interesting to pair with the mighty meat dishes.
In this week’s episode, Symon is hopping all over the country in his meaty quest. His first stop is Lexington, Kentucky, for some smoked chicken wings smothered in a blackberry jalapeño sauce and a burger
made with some of the tastiest pork he’s ever had.
Later, he’s on to New Orleans’ French Quarter for some Caribbeaninspired barbecue, like amazingly crispy rum-soaked ribs. Between those two stops, he jets off to Cincinnati for some chicken and waffles with a spicy kick.
Is your mouth watering yet? Just wait until next week when Symon has a deep-fried burger, a fried steak bacon biscuit and an adult sundae
made with a local stout beer. The list of creative, delicious dishes just goes on and on.
Burgers and barbecue are two quintessential American cuisines, and nothing goes better with those big, meaty meals than a fresh local brew.
Chef Michael Symon is indulging in his love of meat and beer on his ultimate, meaty road trip. A new episode of “Burgers, Brew & ‘Que” airs Friday, March 11, on Food Network.

Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton is under fire for ducking out of his post-game press conference early. On the bright side, it was the first time all day Cam was able to move and not get tackled.
During the Super Bowl, Quicken Loans debuted a new app that lets people get a mortgage instantly, on their
phones, by just tapping the screen. The app is called “What could possibly go wrong?” I just butt-got a mortgage!
The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon
Last night was Super Bowl 50. It’s a special night where Americans gather with friends and family to lose money and gain weight.
I want to say congratulations to the
Denver Broncos, who beat the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. The Broncos really stopped Cam Newton last night. In fact, the only dabbing Cam Newton was doing last night was with some Kleenex.
The Late Late Show with James Corden
After last night’s New Hampshire primary, it looks like Chris Christie is out, which isn’t surprising — he doesn’t look like the kind of guy who wins a lot of races.

The true story that inspired the classic novel “Moby-Dick” comes to life. In 1820, the whaling ship Essex sets sail, but finds little success. Tensions flare between first mate Owen Chase (Hemsworth), an experienced whaler, and Capt. George Pollard (Walker), but when the ship is nearly destroyed in a storm, they agree to set aside their differences and head for what they
hope will be more lucrative whaling waters in the Pacific.
