Magician solves crime in new ABC drama Cover Story
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaL ike a magician cooking up a potion, concocting a hit television show requires the perfect brew of drama, intrigue and mystery. Adding a dash of excitement, a charismatic star and just a hint of romance can create TV magic, and one promising new series seems to have it all.
Jack Cutmore-Scott (“Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life”) stars as magician Cameron Black, who works for the FBI after his magic career is ruined by scandal, in “Deception,” premiering Sunday, March 11, on ABC. While his 15 minutes of fame may be over, Black’s skills are uniquely suited to help the government catch elusive criminals as he uses his knowledge of illusion to confound, influence and deceive others.
The premise may seem farfetched, but creator and producer Chris Fedak (“Chuck”) explained the logic behind it during a Q&A panel at 2017’s New York Comic Con.
“So many of the theories of magic also play into criminality,” Fedak said. “If you’re going to rob a bank, if you’re going to steal things, you are using that same skill set to trick people and deceive people. Cameron brings his own perspective to many of the
cases and the crimes that we’re going to come across.”
Fedak and his cohorts have recruited some top talent to make sure the tricks and illusions in “Deception” ring true. Famed illusionist and crossword expert David Kwong has signed on to co-produce and also serves as a consultant on the series with fellow magician Frances Menotti. Kwong, Menotti and other magic experts have worked extensively with Cutmore-Scott to show him the ropes so he’ll look convincing. The magicians also design the complex illusions in the show, which, according to Fedak, are as true to life as possible.
“When we look at each one of our stories, we want to do as much magic that’s real that we can,” Fedak explained. “The other thing we want to do is [ensure] everything that happens inside the story — our illusions, our deceptions — are all things that can happen in the real world.”
Producers have also enlisted the help of an FBI consultant to keep the program as accurate as possible.
While serving as the FBI’s first “consulting illusionist,” Black works alongside no-nonsense FBI agent Kay Daniels (Ilfenesh Hadera, “Baywatch,” 2017), who’s initially skeptical of his techniques. The chemistry between these two
delivers a healthy dose of humor, thanks to Black’s sometimes naive antics and Daniels’ straight-laced reactions. In contrast, her colleague, FBI Agent Mike Alvarez (Amaury Nolasco, “Prison Break), is a huge fan of magic and recognizes Black right away. Special Agent Deakins (Laila Robins, “Murder in the First”) is eventually won over by the disgraced magician as he proves his worth to the FBI, thanks to a little help from his team.
Black’s “magic” team includes makeup artist/producer Dina Clark (Lenora Crichlow, “Being Human”) and Jordan Kwon (Justin Chon, “Twilight,” 2008). Gunter Gustafsen (Vinnie Jones, “Escape Plan,” 2013) is widely regarded as the world’s greatest illusion builder. They may be new to law enforcement, but the ragtag crew and their fearless leader teach the FBI agents some new tricks. All the while, Black hopes to right the wrongs that have been done to him.
The ensemble cast supports a tried-and-true recipe for primetime success. “Deception” features a formula that’s paid off for broadcast networks in the past several years: a charming male lead (Cutmore-Scott) is paired with a strong-yet-exasperated female lead (Hadera). ABC’s “Castle” and CBS’s “Elementary” are
Late Laughs
Conan
just two examples of other recent series that have enjoyed ratings success thanks to similar plots. But there’s a show to which “Deception” bears even more resemblance — industry insiders have already been comparing ABC’s new magic drama to CBS’s highly successful drama “The Mentalist” (2008-2015), which chronicled the life of disgraced “psychic” Patrick Jane (Simon Baker, “The Guardian”) as he solved crimes for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) alongside Agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney, “Prison Break”).
Interestingly, “Deception” shares a behind-the-scenes link with “The Mentalist.” Emmy-nominated composer Blake Neely, who composed music for “The Mentalist,” is also the composer for “Deception.” Not only that, but one of the show’s executive producers, David Nutter, directed the pilot episode of “The Mentalist.” Along with Fedak, Nutter’s fellow executive producers include Greg Berlanti (“Blindspot”), Martin Gero (“Blindspot”) and Sarah Schechter (“The Flash”).
Like “The Mentalist’s” subplot involving serial killer Red John, it appears “Deception” may feature an ongoing plot in addition to the weekly cases. At New York Comic Con’s panel, Fedak dropped hints about a mystery woman and her reasons for doing what she does to Black.
Details about the nature of Black’s transgressions are sketchy, so audiences will have to watch the new series to find out why Black has become a target. With illusions, humor, explosions and much more, the new drama seems to have something for everyone. Fans of such crime procedurals, magic and action won’t want to miss the premiere of “Deception,” airing Sunday, March 11, on ABC.

In a new interview, President Trump stated that he is not a feminist. Was he getting accused of that a lot?
My concern is Trump tries to obstruct justice so often, and so publicly, that it doesn’t even register as a crime anymore. No one’s still trying to convict the Hamburglar for stealing hamburgers. ‘Cause at this point, that’s just what he does.

‘Spring Baking Championship’ returns for a fourth season
By Andrew Warren TV MediaSpring is in the air, and for those of us up in more northerly climes, it can’t come soon enough after a cold, snow-filled winter. Even folks living in the warmer South have something to get excited about, though: Food Network’s hit seasonal competition is back for another year. “Spring Baking Championship” returns for a fourth season on Monday, March 12, with a new host, its familiar judges and a whole new batch of bakers looking to hit pay dirt.
“Cheap Eats” host Ali Khan takes over as host this season, bringing his easy-going charisma to a position that’s previously been occupied by former NFL play-
er Jesse Palmer and “Junk Food Flip” host Bobby Dean. Luckily, he shouldn’t have too much difficulty learning on the job, with all three judges from “Spring Baking Championship’s” previous three seasons back for another decadent competition.
Duff Goldman (“Ace of Cakes”), Nancy Fuller (“Farmhouse Rules”) and Lorraine Pascale (“Worst Bakers in America”) are all in the kitchen and waiting for the parade of sweet treats that’s headed their way. In Monday’s premiere, 10 fresh contestants — who happen to be some of the best bakers in the country — face off in their first challenges, and this week it’s all about the colors of the season.
In the pre-heat challenge, Khan challenges the bakers to celebrate
the season by making fruit-forward tie-dye mini cheesecakes, with the winner receiving an advantage in the main-heat challenge. For that test, the theme gets even more intense, with the bakers tasked with making color-gradient naked ombre cakes featuring delightful, fresh herbs.
Each week, the weakest-performing baker is sent home, but with a $50,000 prize on the line, the remaining contestants need to stay focused. This season, they’ll be bak-
ing with flower essences, making mini pies, creating edible gardens and even preparing for a picnic.
The various seasonal baking championships have quickly become a tradition on Food Network, with holiday and Halloween versions also drawing in big numbers of viewers during their respective seasons. Big bakes are big with audiences, and “Spring Baking Championship” is no exception. The new season premieres Monday, March 12.

TV that soars Musical drama ‘Rise’ premieres on NBC
By Sarah Passingham TV MediaOn the heels of the much-anticipated season finale of “This Is Us” is the premiere of “Rise,” a new series that promises to fulfill viewers’ desire for an emotional rollercoaster of a drama with a notable musical twist. “Rise” is a musical drama that makes use of the talents of relative newcomers Auli’i Cravalho (“Moana”) and Damon J. Gillespie (“Inside Amy Schumer”), who star as high school students participating in their school’s production of “Spring Awakening.” The new series debuts Tuesday, March 13, on NBC.
Rounding out the cast are favorites Rosie Perez (“White Men Can’t Jump,” 1992), Marley Shelton (“Planet Terror,” 2007) and Josh Radnor, whom “How I Met Your Mother” fans will recognize as Ted Mosby from the hit sitcom. Perez plays the high school’s drama teacher who becomes inspired upon the arrival of Radnor’s character.
In “Rise,” Radnor portrays drama coach Lou Mazzuchelli, a character based on legendary real-life theater teacher Lou Volpe. Volpe runs the incredibly successful drama program at Harry S. Truman High in Levittown, Pa. Students of the program have gone on to become producers, entertainment executives and community theater founders, and led author Michael Sokolove to shadow and document the group for his non-fiction book “Drama High,” from which “Rise” is inspired.
Producers have been quick to note, however, that though the series is inspired by Sokolove’s book, “Rise” will not be a retelling of the events detailed therein, perhaps assuaging worries from fans of the original text. The series differs significantly enough from the source that it was determined that executive producer Jason Katims be credited as having created — not developed or adapted — the show, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The series features some exciting young talent among its leads, including the multitalented Cravalho making her on-screen debut in “Rise” as student Lillette Suarez. Cravalho
voiced the titular character in Disney’s hit animated 2016 film “Moana” and recorded all of the songs sung by the character as well. The film and character made history as the first animated Disney movie to feature a heroine without a romantic storyline. The role of Moana was Cravalho’s big break, and it took her all the way to the Oscars stage that year to perform the film’s nominated song “How Far I’ll Go.” The song was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose own breakout hit on Broadway in 2015 was “Hamilton,” produced by the executive producer of “Rise.”
The connections between some of the biggest recent moments in entertainment come full circle in “Rise,” as the heavyweight talent doesn’t just exist onscreen. Behind the scenes is executive producer Jeffrey Seller, who is best known as the producer of such major Broadway hits as 1993’s “Rent” and one of the biggest tickets since 2015, “Hamilton.” Seller gives “Rise” real credibility as a musical production, and the connection between his projects makes it feel like the series was meant to be made in this moment.
Also behind the scenes is executive producer Jason Katims, responsi-
ble for the cult hit teen drama “Friday Night Lights.” The show ran for six seasons and was beloved by fans for its realistic portrayal of family life in Texas. Though it never garnered a massive audience, “Friday Night Lights” was a favorite among critics for its balanced storytelling and compelling performances, which have made their mark on the cultural landscape.
While a musical television series set in a small town’s high school theater department may call to memory “Glee,” which ended its six-season run in 2015, “Rise” is set to take more cues from Katims’s “Friday
Night Lights” than its musical predecessor. “Glee” relied on sharp comedy to dramatize the inherently dramatic high school setting, while “Rise” takes a more character-driven approach to its story development.
The emotional, often understated style of storytelling that “Friday Night Lights” utilized always grabs audiences, and the most recent examples of that also come from NBC with “This Is Us” and “Parenthood.” Audiences revel in the gripping emotional family drama of “This Is Us” and have ensured that there is a place for devastatingly moving stories on their screens. “Rise” has the opportunity
to rouse fans possibly still fragile directly after the “This Is Us” season finale, and is poised to impress.
“Rise” is here to fill the void of musical theater on television created with the departure of “Glee,” as well as the desire to see the everyday life dramatized as in “Friday Night Lights,” and it features the real heart and emotional core that will be missed between seasons of “This Is Us.” “Rise” certainly could have been made in another time and on another network, but there’s no denying that now is its time to soar. Catch the series premiere of “Rise,” airing Tuesday, March 13, on NBC.
