Alternate history

ABC’s new legal drama rewrites a familiar true story

Legal action, character-driven drama and a healthy dose of wish fulfillment (with origins that trace all the way back to the early 1990s) — ABC’s new 10-part series has it all, and it premieres Monday, March 18. It’s a blend of genres and inspirations that mixes the traditional scripted network drama with true crime in a way similar to what shows like FX’s “American Crime Story” have done.

led the prosecutorial team responsible for proving the state’s case — and lost. After a trial that divided the nation, stirred up uncomfortable questions about justice in America and generated a hectic media circus, Johnson was acquitted of the murder charges and was released. Having suffered irreparable personal and professional damage, Travis relinquished her post and withdrew to rural Washington to live a quieter life, free from the scrutiny of the media

Meyer (Taylor Kalupa, “Law & Order True Crime”), has been brutally slain, and the evidence once again points to him. For reasons we don’t yet know, the powers that be in the L.A. justice system reach out to Travis in Washington and lure her back to the DA’s office for a redemptive shot at putting Johnson behind bars.

If you’re old enough to remember the ‘90s (and even if you’re not), all of this surely rings a bell. If you’re saying to yourself that the plot of this show sounds almost exactly like 1995’s cul-

Late Laughs

The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon

The other day, a woman gave birth to a baby boy on a JetBlue flight. It was stressful, but now JetBlue can finally say they had an early arrival.

Clark gets an unusual chance to write herself a fantasy alternate history wherein her fictional alter ego gets a second chance.

In previews and teasers for “The Fix,” Clark isn’t coy about that element of the project. She openly refers to the plot as a “revenge fantasy,” and isn’t shy about promoting the series with a bit of sleazy enthusiasm. Clark’s participation increases the fledgling show’s credibility and authenticity, although she has been quite clear that “The Fix” doesn’t aim to wade too deep into the legal

The creators of the series say they’re more interested in the personal relationships of the characters involved in this massive legal spectacle than they are in producing a detail-oriented legal procedural. And beyond its opening premise, the show seems destined to move away from its real-world inspirations in an attempt to separate itself from the competition. Instead of offering a dramatized version of a well-researched legal case, “The Fix” travels its own course and generates dra-

As for the rest of the cast, Merrin Dungey (“The King of Queens”) plays Travis’s loyal and supportive colleague, C.J. Bernstein. The cops and legal eagles tasked with helping Travis build her case, while trying to keep her personal vendetta from contaminating the investigation, include Adam Rayner (“Tyrant”) and Breckin Meyer (“Franklin and Bash”). And, of course, someone is required to play the shady legal counsel of the accused. Scott Cohen (“Gilmore Girls”) takes on the role of “The Wolf,” a cunning and ruthless lawyer who helped Johnson avoid conviction in his first trial, and is back to do so again.

ABC has promoted the “The Fix” as a self-contained 10-part series, so viewers who stick it out should be able to expect a solid conclusion. However, if the show proves popular, it could be renewed for further installments, possibly as an anthology series. Check out the premiere of “The Fix” Monday, March 18, on ABC.

A new study found that women who have more children actually age more slowly. While women who have no children couldn’t take part in the study ‘cause they were busy having the time of their lives.

The McDonald’s Shamrock Shake is back! Some people said, “It’s a little early,” while Americans were like, “Shut up, we need this!”

Bernie Sanders has announced that he’s running for president! Although, at age 77 years old, he isn’t so much running as he is slowly wandering for president.

The Late Late Show With James Corden

A man in New Jersey recently robbed a home and then ordered a Lyft as a getaway car. When the car arrived, he jumped inside, only to realize he had mistakenly entered an unmarked police car. This is the shortest season of “True Detective” ever.

The new Galaxy Fold can instantly double in size. It’s basically me after the holiday break.

According to a new study, dog owners take more pictures of their pets than they do of their spouse. I feel like this study has already been conducted several million times by anyone who’s ever been on Instagram.

Dog owners take more pictures of their pet than of their spouse. The same is also true for cat owners, except they never have spouses.

Late Night With Seth Meyers

According to a new study, 25 percent of millennials would go to jail for a week if it meant they could own their dream home. Said millennials, “Free meals and only one roommate?! That is my dream home.”

State officials in New York have approved a new plan that will surround part of Staten Island with a 5.3-mile-long seawall to protect it from flooding. And to protect the rest of New York from Staten Island.

A Massachusetts family’s dog was recently found 175 miles away from their home after it jumped a wall and escaped their yard. But sure. Walls work.

The Bernie Sanders campaign has announced that in the first 12 hours after launching his presidential bid, Sanders raised more than $4 million in donations. Which is great for Sanders but terrible for the guy behind him at Coinstar.

First sign of spring: Food Network’s seasonal baking competition is back

Spring is in the air! For those of us who live in more northerly climes — you know, those places that have spent the past few months buried under several feet of snow — it’s an exciting time with longer days, returning birds and melting snow, but even folks in the balmy south get the pleasure of one particular sign of the season: the return of “Spring Baking Championship.”

The Food Network series, which premieres Monday, March 18, always blooms at this time of year, and it’s kind of a big deal. The show, along with the network’s other seasonal competitions, is a

huge ratings hit, and last season it attracted the biggest audiences in its history.

Spring is all about renewal, and this year’s “Spring Baking Championship” takes that to heart by welcoming a new host. Fashion consultant and former “The Chew” presenter Clinton Kelly takes the position this year, taking over from “Cheap Eats” host Ali Khan. At the judges’ table things are more familiar, with Nancy Fuller, Duff Goldman and Lorraine Pascale returning to the positions that they’ve held since the very first season.

Ten bakers enter the kitchen in this week’s premiere, and for their first challenge, they’re tasked with making sumptuous spring

animal-themed doughnuts. Then, once the judges have had their first taste of what the competitors are capable of, the bakers are asked to bring out their inner artists to make and decorate gorgeous watercolor cakes featuring scenes of iconic spring fruits and vegetables.

Sadly, this is a competition, and only one baker can ultimately win the title of Spring Baking Champion. At the end of the episode, the worst-performing baker is sent packing by the judges, but the relief is short-lived for the remaining competitors. Throughout the competition, they are asked to bake ribbon-worthy rhubarb pies, make marshmallow desserts for Easter and even participate in a tart-filled spelling bee.

Spring really is in the air, and the air has the scent of delicious baked goodies. “Spring Baking Championship” premieres Monday, March 18, on Food Network.
