Television’s earliest moms were impeccably coiffed happy homemakers. In the late 1980s, however, a new TV mom broke the mold and took over prime time. Roseanne Conner (Roseanne Barr, “The Roseanne Show”) was no June Cleaver. She wasn’t even Wilma Flintstone — and that seemed to be the reason people identified with her. Far from a perfect housewife, Roseanne was a much more realistic representation of the blue-collar mother, wife, sister and friend.
Now, she’s returning to prime time to deliver another slice of honest American life as Barr reunites with her TV family in the premiere of the nine-episode reboot of “Roseanne,” airing Tuesday, March 27, on ABC. The working class Conner family once again faces economic challenges as they live paycheck to paycheck in the small town of Lanford, Ill.
The original “Roseanne” was a huge hit, thanks to its gritty yet witty portrayal of average America, and it ran for nine successful seasons between 1988 and 1997. In the original series finale, it was revealed that the whole show had been a story written by Roseanne Conner about her life. It
was a controversial ending, and one that will be addressed throughout the new run of the series, as Barr had always hoped.
“In the original series, I always wanted to have the 10th year so I could do exactly what I did in these nine [episodes], which was to finish and complete the story of this family,” Barr explained at the 2018 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour.
The entire main cast is back for the reboot. John Goodman (“The Big Lebowski,” 1998) co-stars as Roseanne’s husband, Dan Conner. Sara Gilbert (“The Talk”), who also serves as an executive producer on the series alongside Barr, plays daughter Darlene, and Alicia Goranson (“Boys Don’t Cry,” 1999) returns as eldest daughter Becky. Sarah Chalke (“Scrubs”), who portrayed Becky in later seasons of the original series, also appears in the new show as a different character, Andrea. Michael Fishman (“Undrafted,” 2016) reprises his role as Roseanne and Dan’s son, D.J., and Emmy winner Laurie Metcalf (“Lady Bird,” 2017) steps back into the role of Roseanne’s sister, Jackie Harris.
Fans of the original series might have been surprised to see Goodman’s name on the roster, as his death was revealed at the end of the
original series run. Goodman seemed satisfied with how Dan’s death is addressed when we spoke at the TCA Press Tour: “I thought it was a clever way to do it, handle it and get it out of the way,” the actor said.
In addition to the main cast, other favorites from the show’s first run are also slated to return. American Theatre Hall of Famer Estelle Parsons (“Bonnie and Clyde,” 1967) stars as Roseanne’s mother, Beverly Harris. Comedian Sandra Bernhard (“Brooklyn NineNine”) reprises her role as Roseanne’s friend, Nancy Bartlett. Natalie West (“Nate and Margaret,” 2012) once again appears as Roseanne’s friend and Dan’s stepmother, Crystal Anderson. “Grey’s Anatomy’s” James Pickens Jr. stars as Chuck Mitchell, and Adilah Barnes (“Tracy Takes On...”) returns as his wife, Anne-Marie. Johnny Galecki (“The Big Bang Theory”) returns for one episode to reprise his role as David.
Also of note is Christopher Lloyd’s (“Back to the Future,” 1985) gueststarring role as Bev’s boyfriend, Lou. He won’t be the only new face in Lanford. The revival welcomes new cast members Emma Kenney (“Shameless”) as Harris Conner, Ames McNamara (“At Home With
Amy Sedaris”) as Mark, and Jayden Rey (“Unforgettable”) as Mary.
Beyond the familiar and new faces, “Roseanne” fans can also look forward to the intricately recreated set. From the plaid sofa to the crocheted afghan, things haven’t changed much in the Conner house — even the dated wallpaper was recreated from photos from the original series. Goodman recalled that walking onto the set for the first time felt like coming home, and that’s exactly how viewers are sure to feel when the show returns.
The original series was immensely popular in its heyday and has graced many prestigious “best of” lists over the years as a result. The show and its stars won Emmys, Golden Globes, People’s Choice Awards and even a Peabody Award for Excellence in Television Broadcasting. Not only that, it reached the No. 1 spot in the Nielsen ratings in its second season, and often ranked in the top 20 throughout its run.
It remains to be seen whether ABC’s new version will live up to the original, but millions of TV viewers are eager to find out. If there’s one thing fans can be sure of, it’s that, much like the original, the new “Roseanne” won’t shy away from controversial topics. The show is expected to address topics such as health care, the opioid crisis, gender and illegal immigration. Many TV comedies tend to avoid such hotbutton issues, but Barr will tackle them head on in an effort to represent the many different opinions held by Americans, just as she did in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
Check out the special one-hour premiere of “Roseanne,” airing Tuesday, March 27, on ABC.

Cooking at home can be such a joy, but as a home cook, it sometimes doesn’t take much to make me feel like I’m in over my head. After all, professional chefs can spend years studying at culinary school apprenticing under accomplished chefs and decades perfecting their craft. How’s a home cook supposed to keep up with that?
Well, we at home may never be able to achieve the culinary mastery that the likes of Gordon Ramsay or Tom Colicchio have accom
ing: she herself is self-taught, relying mainly on cookbooks and feedback from family and friends, and in her long-running Food Network series, she shares all of that helpful cooking advice.
“Barefoot Contessa: Cook Like a Pro” currently airs Sundays on Food Network, and in this week’s March 25 episode, the helpful host shows how to make some amazing one-dish meals that don’t require any sides.
First, she makes a one-pot meal that’s quick and easy to throw together but big and hearty enough to feed an entire dinner party: tender lamb shanks and orzo. Then
is a lighter but no less tasty option for a one-dish meal, and she finishes off the lesson with mouthwatering baked polenta with mushrooms and blue cheese.
Through every dish, Garten patiently explains each step and the reasoning behind it — there’s nothing archaic or mysterious here. Being self-trained herself,
she knows exactly what steps and techniques can trip up a home cook but also knows how to tackle them.
Every home cook wants to cook like a pro, and Ina Garten is someone who’s been in that exact place. She shares her best advice in “Barefoot Contessa: Cook Like a Pro,” Sundays on Food Network.

The battle continues against the titanic First Order, but when Resistance pilot Poe Dameron (Isaac) disobeys orders during an attack and unnecessarily wastes precious ships and lives, he’s demoted by Gen. Leia (Fisher). After the general is incapacitated during an attack staged by her son Kylo Ren (Driver), Poe butts heads with the Resistance’s new leader (Dern). Meanwhile, Rey (Ridley) has finally found exiled Jedi master Luke Skywalker (Hamill), from whom she wishes to receive training in the Force, but her great power terrifies him and he refuses. Despite being enemies, Rey and Kylo begin communicating
across the galaxy using the Force. Director:RianJohnson.Stars:Adam Driver,DaisyRidley.2017.152min. Action.
After his fiancée, Mia (Bolona), is kidnapped by a human smuggling organization while at her own bachelorette party, Army veteran Deklan (Hauser) and his brothers arm themselves and launch an attack on the criminal’s den, where they find plenty of evidence of wrongdoing but no sign of his beloved. Their raid brings them to the attention of local detectives Avery (Willis) and Baker (Bush), who’ve been after the criminal kingpin for a long time, but with the brothers
Have you ever wanted to start over in your career? That’s what Alex Schuman (Zach Braff, “Scrubs”) decides to do, despite being in his 30s and married with two children. Based on Alex Blumberg’s successful podcast “StartUp,” “Alex, Inc.” follows a radio producer, journalist and family man who leaves his job to start his own company. This fresh family comedy premieres Wednesday, March 28, on ABC.
Braff takes the titular role in the comedy, with occasional roles as producer and director. The quirky and heartfelt series is a step up from his usual whimsical style. In 2014, Braff released his second feature film, “Wish I Was Here,” the highly anticipated followup to 2004’s “Garden State,” both of which he wrote and directed.
He hasn’t done much else in the film industry since — nothing that he’s put his heart into, at least. Braff’s had some guest appearances on television, in such series as “Bojack Horseman” and “Undateable,” but this will be his first time as a series regular since “Scrubs” ended in 2010.
In “Alex Inc.,” Alex is no longer satisfied with telling happy stories as a radio journalist. Feeling miserable and unfulfilled, Alex wants to engage people’s minds, not merely cheer them up. So, he takes a big risk: he starts his own company to tell the stories he wants to tell.
The stakes are high, and his wife knows it. Arunima (Tiya Sircar, “The Good Place”), also known as Rooni, is a driven and determined public defender. She’s feeling the pressure after the shift in their lifestyle, as it’s up to her to pick up the slack after Alex leaves behind great benefits, high pay and flexible hours. Even if it’s through clenched teeth, she’s trying to be as supportive as possible.
Understandably, starting over isn’t easy when you’re a 37-year-old dad. “You’d wonder why somebody with a good job, a wife, two kids and a dancer’s body would do something so risky,” Alex says in the promo video. He explains that he wants to choose what stories he
shares and with whom he works, but most importantly, he wants to be the man in charge, so that no one can tell him what to do.
Alex’s secret weapon is his support group, which includes his highenergy producer, Deirdre (Hillary Anne Matthews, “Single by 30”), and his second cousin, the lightning-lipped Eddie (Michael Imperioli, “Californication”). Eddie’s unemployed, so he doesn’t have much, but he puts everything he can towards the venture, helping Alex to navigate the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship and doling out victory hugs when needed.
It’s a different role for tough-guy Imperioli, who got a taste of mob life in Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” (1990) and became a fully “made” man in the acclaimed HBO drama “The Sopranos.”
As the business gets going, Alex struggles to keep his marriage and family a priority. He dips into his 401k and lies about it to his wife, which blows up in his face when she finds out. They have too much riding on this to fail, with their savings and careers hanging in the balance. Let’s not forget the mortgage, bills and the rearing of two growing kids.
Their two quirky children, Ben (Elisha Henig, “Mr. Robot”) and Soraya (Audyssie James, “Sesame Street”), need to make some adjustments, too. Recording a podcast of their lives isn’t easy — it must be natural, which means the kids have to learn to ignore the microphone. In a scene from the show’s trailer, the first thing his daughter does is lean into the mic and say in a cockney accent that she’s a British person, causing Alex to shrug in defeat. Clearly, adjustments will need to be made.
Alex turns the business into the “Cadillac of podcast companies,”
as he says in the promo video, and looks to sell it for a profit. He’s not the only one following his passion, either. Alex’s workday is spent surrounded by creative minds — people who have ideas they’re developing, from virtual reality sets to a robot that rocks babies to sleep. It’s an unconventional workspace that Eddie calls “the nerd factory.” This incubator may mean he’s surrounded by some pretty unusual inventions, but a safe space for creating is what’s important to Alex.
“Alex, Inc.” looks to prove how successful a family that dreams together can be. It’s a modern spin on
a traditional family comedy with enough bite for everyone to enjoy. Plus, it allows us to celebrate Braff’s return to the small screen, which is a sweet treat for fans of the Emmy nominee.
Written and produced by Matt Tarses (“Scrubs”), the series includes Alex Blumberg as executive producer. You won’t want to miss the ups and downs of entrepreneurship as Alex struggles to establish his business. It’s going to be tricky, but we’re eager to watch the juggling begin. The series premiere of “Alex, Inc.” airs Wednesday, March 28, on ABC.
