Smooth as silk
Season 2 of ‘Penny Dreadful’ weaves together an impeccable narrative
By Lydia Peever TV MediaThere’s danger in the very streets of London! Where penny dreadfuls were cheap, sensationalized stories of criminals, detectives and the supernatural published in the 19th century, Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful” is a show where grinding gears herald the turn of the century and passion and death were easier to come upon.
By the flicker of gaslight, love and murder cast the same shadow, and if you haven’t taken a stab at it already, it might be time to cut into “Penny Dreadful,” when the season 2 premiere airs Sunday, May 3, on Showtime.
Terror, sex and mystery collide with impeccable setting to ensnare the boldest of fans in this British-American horror co-production. Some shows attempt to stitch together many existing mythologies of monsters and mayhem, and often it comes off as forced. “Penny Dreadful,” however, seamlessly weaves many familiar stories into itself like so many spiders, producing a show that’s as smooth as fine silk.
Featuring the fictional likes of a young Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway, “Cape Wrath”) and a simpering and seductive Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney, “The Tempest,” 2010), it may seem like “Penny Dreadful” leans towards being a retelling of these classic works of fiction. But for creator John Logan (“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” 2007), who seems to be very at home in the horror genre, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
“When I started working on [“Penny Dreadful”], I didn’t want to just write a Frankenstein story or a Dracula story or a Dorian Gray story,” he said at the Television Critics Association fall press tour. “That’s why I created the characters that Eva and Josh play — to be the centerpiece of the story. I wanted a fictional story that was completely unknown to the audience, so there wouldn’t be any sense of familiarity. ... What I’m hoping is that genre fans will recognize that we love the fact that
“In season 1, [Vanessa] finds herself confronted with the dilemma of whether she wants to be normal,” Green said. “In season 2, she’s naked emotionally, and I don’t know what she’s about to do. The Devil is still haunting her. He’s sent his servants, the servants are witches, and they are actually more terrifying than the Devil himself.”
Hartnett returns to “Penny Dreadful” as Ethan Chandler, a charming American who, for the time being, seems to have dropped his sharp-shooter act. He has transformed himself, in more ways than one, proving to be the best possible friend Vanessa could have at the moment, as neither are quite what they seem. The transient nature of his character and lone-wolf drive to leave is at odds with the pack mentality of deciding to stay in season 2.
“The threats of this season really revolve around finding a way to protect Vanessa,” he said in a separate interview on the YouTube channel. “Ethan has sworn himself to protect her, but obviously has an element of himself that he can’t control.”
For Logan, he’s still looking forward into the series, despite season 2 just getting off the ground. And it’s little wonder that he is.
“Penny Dreadful” saw a quick renewal for season 2 after garnering mostly positive reviews and taking home a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Most Exciting New Series in 2014. The vivid storytelling keeps us hooked, and the raucous sex and visceral action makes it all the better. While he must leave the story’s ongoing fate in the hands of fans and Showtime executives, if allowed room to roam, there should be plenty of terror to come.
“There’s something about the luxury of time and the nuance you can bring to characters over time that has been very exciting to explore.” he said in an interview with “Collider.” “So, I’ve envisioned well years I’ve imagined where these characters are going to go, but I’m also discovering it with the actors.”
Don’t falter while running down the cobblestone lane, rushing to get the next installment of “Penny Dreadful.” The premiere episode of season 2 airs Sunday, May 3, on

Late Laughs
Conan: Conan O’Brien
The top 15 contenders for the Republican presidential nomination own at least 40 guns among them. In other words, if we elect a Republican president, nobody is hopping over the White House fence.
NBC is airing a series about the Biblical events following the crucifixion of Jesus. I think they might be stretching the story for ratings, because it’s called “Jesus 2: Payback Time.” He forgives, but he doesn’t forget.
The Late Show: David Letterman
How many of you intentionally don’t pay your taxes? Me, neither. Whenever I go there to my accountant’s office, I’m taken up in the elevator blindfolded. I said: “I’m worried about having money for retirement.” He said: “Don’t worry, you’ll get your cut.”
We have Donald Trump and Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham all running for president. It’s all part of the Republican plan to make Jeb Bush look presidential.
Solution on page 11.
Selma
Set during the year 1965 in Alabama, this Academy Award-winning historical drama recounts the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights marches led by some of the most influential AfricanAmerican activists of that decade. Shortly after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Martin Luther King Jr. (Oyelowo) meets with President Lyndon B. Johnson (Wilkinson) in an attempt to secure new legislation that would
secure the rights of black citizens to vote unencumbered. After the president dismisses his request, King and other black leaders begin to organize a march from Selma to Montgomery as an act of protest over discriminatory voting requirements that disenfranchise African Americans.

Who says that actors are out of touch? OK, so the stereotype of the rich, snobby Hollywood star may apply in some (possibly a lot) of cases, but it sure doesn’t apply to Haylie Duff.
She may be singer/actress/ songwriter Hilary Duff’s big sister, but Haylie definitely doesn’t live in her sibling’s shadow. She has her own successful acting career (she starred in “7th Heaven” and 2004’s “Napoleon Dynamite”), and in 2012 launched her own super successful blog, “Real Girl’s Kitchen.”
It turns out that the actress is also a whiz with food, and her easy but tasty recipes quickly found a loyal following. That blog was — and continues to be — a huge success, and in 2013 she released a cookbook featuring some of her favorite recipes. Her very own TV show wasn’t far behind.
“The Real Girl’s Kitchen” is currently airing Saturdays on Cooking Channel, and it shows Duff doing what she does best: cooking up delicious dishes that are great for everyday situations that people at home are likely to find themselves in. Whether it’s a baby shower or a surprise birthday party, there’s really no get-together that isn’t improved with some good food.
In the May 9 episode, she’ll be hosting a potluck with her friends in which they’ll be challenging each other to put a twist on some
of their childhood favorites. She’ll be throwing together some turkey chili with a side of beer, bacon and cheese cornbread herself before helping her friends prepare some Greek meatballs.
Sound mouthwatering? I definitely think so. Luckily, the TV and cookbook fame hasn’t stopped
Duff from updating her blog regularly. Visitors to realgirlskitchen. com can find countless mouthwatering recipes from the down-toearth actress, along with restaurant reviews, general thoughts from the kitchen whiz and even answers to questions posed by her many loyal fans.
