“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy Vs. The Reverend”
Get interactive with this new Kimmy Schmidt special coming to Netflix on Tuesday, May 12. Following in the creative storytelling path of “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” (2018), this new television experience lets viewers choose the fates of the characters themselves, as Kimmy (Ellie Kemper, “The Office”), now a famous author and the fiancée of a handsome prince (Daniel Radcliffe, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” 2011), must prevent the seedy cultist Rev. Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (John Hamm, “Mad Men”) from carrying out his evil plan. This single-episode feature is a followup to the popular show “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” which was created by longtime writing partners Tina Fey (“Mean Girls,” 2004) and Robert Carlock (“30 Rock”) and concluded its fourth and final season at the beginning of 2019. The spinoff special sees the return of characters played by Tituss Burgess (“Set It Up,” 2018), Jane Krakowski (“Modern Family”) and Carol Kane (“Annie Hall,” 1977), alongside guest roles by Amy Sedaris (“Elf,” 2003), Fred Armisen (“Saturday Night Live”) and Johnny Knoxville (“Bad Grandpa,” 2013), among others.

“Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics”
Go on a trip with Netflix starting Monday, May 11. This original cultural documentary showcases some of the most stimulating and bizarre psychedelic drug trips as told by the celebrities who experienced them. The unconventional film uses gripping visual aids from animation to re-enactment in order to recount the tales in the best and often most comedic manner possible. Embedded in the comedy are discussions on the history and future of hallucinogens, the perks and downfalls of drug use and the social impacts of the substances, ranging from science and cosmic possibility to pop culture and influence. Originally scheduled for its world premiere as a part of the 2020 SXSW film festival, this groundbreaking documentary features appearances and illustrated anecdotes by comedic actors Adam Scott (“Step Brothers,” 2008), Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”), Sarah Silverman (“A Million Ways to Die in the West,” 2014) and Rosie Perez (“The Last Thing He Wanted,” 2020). This documentary helps to dispel many of the myths spouted during the era of the “Say No to Drugs” after-school
specials. The film also stars Adam Horovitz, aka Ad-Rock, from the iconic hip-hop group The Beastie Boys.
“Trial by Media”
Court is in session this Monday, May 11, on Netflix. The streaming site presents a new docuseries showcasing some of the most gripping and controversial trials in modern legal history. Named for a popular term used to point to the media’s influence on someone’s (usually a defendant’s) perceived innocence or guilt during court proceedings, the series takes an investigative look at how television news coverage has impacted the most memorable trials in recent times. Separated into six parts, “Trial by Media” covers cases from the murder of Scott Amedure, a gay man who was killed by his love interest after broadcasting his feelings on an episode of The Jenny Jones Show (aired later on Court TV); the corruption and subsequent political downfall of former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich; and the deadly shooting of unarmed Guinean migrant Amadou Diallo at the hand of four plainclothed NYPD officers in 1999. Executive producers include author and lawyer Jeffrey Toobin (“The People vs. O.J. Simpson”), journalist Steven Brill, Academy Awardwinning actor/producers George Clooney (“The Ides of March,” 2011) and Grant Heslov (“The Monuments Men,” 2014), and filmmakers David Gelb (“Street Food,” 2019), Jason Sterman (“Icarus,” 2017) and Brian McGinn (“Amanda Knox,” 2016).
BINGE:
“Jane the Virgin”
Dive into a land of comic whimsy with all five seasons of “Jane the Virgin,” available now on Netflix. The award-winning series, created by writer and producer Jennie Snyder Urman (“Men in Trees”), first aired in 2014 and tells the story of Venezuelan-American amateur writer and romance enthusiast Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez,
ning a 10-episode arc, the Hulu original series, written and created by Tony McNamara (“The Favourite,” 2018) and featuring music by Nathan Barr (“The Americans”), has been picked up by networks from more than 14 countries around the world — including Russia.
BINGE:
“The Handmaid’s Tale”
“Someone Great,” 2019) as she navigates a surprise pregnancy, despite the well-known fact that she is a proud virgin. Weaving in bits of magical realism — a Latin-American element of fiction popularized by authors like Gabriel García Marquez and Isabel Allende — alongside the occasional song-and-dance number, the series takes on the format of a novel, each episode representing one chapter of the whole story. Larger-than-life characters help to round out the Spanglish telenovela, with recurring appearances by Andrea Navedo (“Bright,” 2017) as Jane’s show biz-focused mother, Xiomara, Jaime Camil (“Broke”) as the hilariously egotistical soap star Rogelio De La Vega, Justin Baldoni (“The Bold and the Beautiful”) as hotelier and trust fund baby Rafael Solano, and Yael Grobglas (“Reign”) as Rafael’s delightfully conniving partner.
WHAT’S NEW ON HULU
“The Great”

Travel back in time on May 15 as Hulu turns Russian history into herstory. The series tells the iconic true(ish) story of Russian Empress Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning, “Super 8,” 2011) through a satirical lens, embellishing greatly upon a selection of historically accurate facts for comedic effect. The real-life Empress, and the country’s longestreigning female leader, is well known for organizing a coup d’état and overthrowing her husband, Emperor Peter III (Nicholas Hoult, “Warm Bodies,” 2013), which resulted in her ascension to power.

Catherine the Great restored Russia to its former glory and groomed the country to become one of the most powerful empires in the world. This new series focuses on the life of the famed Empress from her marriage to the eccentrically bratty — if not slightly unhinged — Peter III, to her underhanded plot and subsequent reign beginning in the 1760s. Span-
Join the resistance in the battle against Gilead with “The Handmaid’s Tale” — all three seasons are now available on Hulu. Based on the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, this series first began in 2017 and tells the story of June, aka Offred (Elizabeth Moss, “The One I Love,” 2014), as she and every other woman in the United States have their human rights stripped away from them. Following a brash political move by an otherwise seemingly “regular” government, women are promptly fired from their jobs, cut off from their financial accounts (which are now allocated to their closest living male relative) and separated into classes based on sexuality, wealth, marital connection and, most notably, fertility.
BINGE THIS ON PRIME
“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” Dive deep into the world of counterterrorism with the first two seasons of this fast-paced political action series available now on Prime. Based on the characters created by action-thriller author Tom Clancy, this Amazon series follows the titular protagonist, Jack Ryan (John Krasinski, “A Quiet Place,” 2018), as he is pulled from the safety of his CIA desk job and prompted to carry out a series of dangerous field assignments against political extremists around the world. Each season lays primary focus on a different mission and, while the characters and plotlines are entirely fictional, the show often points to very realistic scenarios in the world of political warfare, with a bit of secret agent glamor thrown in for good measure.
